How Rand Paul tried to lead an eye doctors rebellion

Posted: February 2, 2015 at 5:44 pm

The letters came from a young ophthalmologist in Kentucky. He was recruiting for an eye doctors rebellion.

We wont be trod upon, he wrote, using the language of 1776. You cant promulgate injustice without consequences.

The injustice he was talking about was a new rule, from the powerful group that deems American ophthalmologists to be board-certified. It required younger doctors to take a test that older doctors did not have to take.

The Kentucky doctor was so outraged that he seceded and started his own Board of Ophthalmology, so he could certify himself.

You can send a clear message to the establishment by signing up to be certified by the new board, too, the letter said. Check the appropriate box and return the card with your $500. Sincerely, Rand Paul, M.D.

The letter, from about 2003, helps illuminate a little-understood (and mostly ridiculed) chapter of Pauls life before politics: how he became a self-certified ophthalmologist.

The saga began in the 1990s, when Paul now a senator representing Kentucky and a GOP presidential contender hatched a plan to put his familys free-market ideals into practice. He wouldnt submit to the establishment. He would out-compete it by offering doctors an alternative with lower fees and fairer rules. His do-it-yourself medical board lasted more than a decade, becoming one of the most complex organizations Paul ever led on his own.

But it didnt work. Indeed, in a life of successes, it became one of Pauls biggest flops.

The board certified only 50 or 60 doctors, by Pauls count, and was never accepted by the medical establishment. It failed partly because of resistance from the old guard but also because Paul hurt his own cause with shortcuts and oversights that made his big effort seem small.

The other officers of his board, for instance, werent ophthalmologists. They were his wife and father-in-law. His Web site was mainly a mission statement, and his mission statement had grammatical errors. And, after Paul missed a filing deadline in 2000, the state legally dissolved his board. Although Paul kept it operating, it remained unrecognized by the state until he officially revived it in 2005.

Rand Pauls recruiting letter for his opthamology board

Posted: at 5:44 pm

Around 2002, some eye doctors began to get fiery letters from an ophthalmologist in Bowling Green, Ky. He was trying to recruit them to do something odd: sign up to be "board-certified" by a medical board that hadn't existed a few years before.

The Kentucky doctor was Rand Paul -- the son of libertarian icon Ron Paul, who hadn't yet run for office himself. Paul managed to persuade around 50 or 60 doctors to pay the $500 and be certified by his new board. But he never managed to win recognition from the medical establishment, and the board had nearly faded away by the time Paul ran for office himself in 2010.

Ayn Rand at 110

Posted: at 5:44 pm

Interest in the bestselling novelist-philosopher Ayn Rand continues to grow, 33 years after her death and 70 years after she first hit the bestseller lists withThe Fountainhead. Rand was born February 2, 1905, in St. Petersburg, Russia.

In the dark year of 1943, in the depths of World War II and the Holocaust, when the United States was allied with one totalitarian power to defeat another, three remarkable women published books that could be said to have given birth to the modern libertarian movement. Rose Wilder Lane, the daughter of Laura Ingalls Wilder, who had writtenLittle House on the Prairieand other stories of American rugged individualism, published a passionate historical essay calledThe Discovery of Freedom.Isabel Paterson, a novelist and literary critic, producedThe God of the Machine, which defended individualism as the source of progress in the world.

The other great book of 1943 wasThe Fountainhead,a powerful novel about architecture and integrity by Ayn Rand. The books individualist theme did not fit the spirit of the age, and reviewers savaged it. But it found its intended readers. Its sales started slowly, then built and built. It was still on theNew York Times bestseller list two full years later. Hundreds of thousands of people read it in the 1940s, millions eventually, some of them because of the 1949 film starring Gary Cooper and Patricia Neal, and many of them were inspired enough to seek more information about Ayn Rands ideas. Rand went on to write an even more successful novel,Atlas Shrugged,in 1957, and to found an association of people who shared her philosophy, which she called Objectivism. Although her political philosophy was libertarian, not all libertarians shared her views on metaphysics, ethics, and religion. Others were put off by the starkness of her presentation and by her cult following.

College students, professors, businessmen, Paul Ryan, the rock group Rush, and Hollywood stars have all proclaimed themselves fans of Ayn Rand.

Like Ludwig von Mises and F. A. Hayek, Rand demonstrates the importance of immigration not just to America but to American libertarianism. Mises had fled his native Austria right before the Nazis confiscated his library, Rand fled the Communists who came to power in her native Russia. When a heckler asked her at a public speech, Why should we care what a foreigner thinks?, she replied with her usual fire, Ichoseto be an American. What did you ever do, except for having been born?

George Gilder calledAtlas Shruggedthe most important novel of ideas sinceWar and Peace. Writing in theWashington Post, he explained her impact on the world of ideas and especially the world of capitalist ideas: Rand flung her gigantic books into the teeth of an intelligentsia still intoxicated by state power, during an era when even Dwight Eisenhower maintained tax rates of 90 percent and confessed his inability to answer Nikita Khrushchevs assertion that capitalism was immoral because it was based on greed.

Rands books first appeared when no one seemed to support freedom and capitalism, and when even capitalisms greatest defenders seemed to emphasize its utility, not its morality. It was often said at the time that socialism is a good idea in theory, but human beings just arent good enough for socialism. It was Ayn Rand who said that socialism is not good enough for human beings.

Her books garnered millions of readers because they presented a passionate philosophical case for individual rights and capitalism, and did so through the medium of vivid, cant-put-it-down novels. The people who read Ayn Rand and got the point didnt just become aware of costs and benefits, incentives and trade-offs. They became passionate advocates of liberty.

Rand was an anomaly in the 1940s and 1950s, an advocate of reason and individualism in time of irrationality and conformity. But she was a shaper of the 1960s, the age of do your own thing and youth rebellion; the 1970s, pejoratively described as the Me Decade but perhaps better understood as an age of skepticism about institutions and a turn toward self-improvement and personal happiness; and the 1980s, the decade of tax cuts and entrepreneurship.

Throughout those decades her books continued to sell 30 million copies over the years, and they still move off the shelves. The financial crisis and Wall Street bailouts gaveAtlas Shruggeda huge push. A Facebook group titled Read the news today? Its like Atlas Shrugged is happening in real life was formed. More than 50 years after publication, the book had its best sales year ever. And sales have remained high more than a million copies of Rands books were sold in 2012.

Family of Post reporter held in Iran issues statement

Posted: at 5:43 pm

The family of Jason Rezaian, a Washington Post reporter who has been detained in Iran for more than half a year, issued the following statement Sunday in response to the naming of Judge Abolghassem Salavati to hear the case in Revolutionary Court:

February 1, 2015

We can confirm the recent reports that Judge Salavati has been assigned to Jason and Yeganehs case in Irans Revolutionary Court. We find it very disturbing that the judiciary would select a judge to oversee the case who has been sanctioned by (and barred from entering) the European Union due to what it calls gross human rights violations.

Jason has dedicated the past decade of his life to informing the world of the true nature of Iran, the Iranian people, and their culture. In stark contrast, the Iranian government has spent the past six months displaying to the world a disregard for its own laws and the international human rights agreements that it has pledged to follow.

What Iran expects to gain from the prolonged and unjust detention of Jason is unclear to us. What is evident to us, though, is that this trial has nothing to do with Jason or Yeganehs actual actions, and may simply be a pretense to distract the world from some other motive the government may have.

We remain hopeful that the proper authorities will ensure that the court will quickly convene and that the judge, despite his reputation, will even more quickly discover no basis for a finding other than not guilty and will order Jason released immediately.

Carol Morello is the diplomatic correspondent for The Washington Post, covering the State Department.

Hard-line judge in Iran is assigned case of jailed Post reporter Jason Rezaian

Posted: at 5:43 pm

The family of Jason Rezaian, a Washington Post reporter who has been detained in Iran for more than half a year, issued a statement Sunday that was sharply critical of the Iranian government, after what they called the very disturbing development that Rezaian and his wife will be tried by a judge known for imposing harsh sentences.

Rezaians brother, Ali, and their mother, Mary Rezaian, questioned the rationale for assigning the case to Judge Abolghassem Salavati, the head of a Revolutionary Court branch where sensitive cases are tried. Salavati has imposed long prison sentences, lashings and in some cases death for defendants in a number of high-profile cases involving national security and political offenses. He has been sanctioned by the European Union since 2011.

We find it very disturbing that the judiciary would select a judge to oversee the case who has been sanctioned by (and barred from entering) the European Union due to what it calls gross human rights violations, the family said.

The 38-year-old reporter was arrested July22 along with his wife, Yeganeh Salehi, who also is a reporter. Salehi was released on bail, but Rezaian has been detained ever since and has been unable to see a lawyer. The exact nature of the charges against him has never been made clear, other than a statement saying he was accused of activities beyond the scope of journalism.

His family denied the accusations and pointedly contrasted his actions with those of the Iranian government.

Jason has dedicated the past decade of his life to informing the world of the true nature of Iran, the Iranian people, and their culture, the statement said.

News that their case had been assigned to Salavati, which was first reported by the New York Times, appears to reflect an ongoing power struggle between moderates surrounding President Hassan Rouhani and hard-liners allied with Irans supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The Posts executive editor, Martin Baron, called for Rezaians release in a statement Sunday.

There has been no justice in the case of our colleague Jason Rezaian since the beginning, Baron said. He was held for months without knowing the accusations against him. Now that the case is proceeding to trial, the charges still have not been specified. He still hasnt been allowed to see a lawyer. This case has unfolded, and continues to unfold, without a hint of fairness and justice. Jason should be released immediately. What has happened to him is an abomination and deserves the worlds condemnation.

But, above all, it is true!"

His speaking topics range from custom presentations to "The Big AHA", "Business as Unusual" and "How the Internet of Things Will Open Up a Future of Opportunity."
