Psoriasis Is an Auto-Immune Disease That Causes Itching and Rashes

Posted: February 4, 2015 at 8:43 pm

Psoriasis causes skin cells to build up rapidly on the surface.

Imagine a disease that is hiding in your genetic makeup, waiting for some external event to trigger it into existence.

When activated, this disease convinces your body that something is wrong with your own skin, causing a life-long struggle that culminates in itching, uncomfortable, embarrassing rashes that can be painful, hard to treat and impossible to cure.

Nearly 3 percent of the world's population has no need to imagine such a disease to them it is a very real ailment called psoriasis.

Psoriasis is a genetic auto-immune disease that causes skin cells to build up rapidly on the surface, creating extra-thick skin that can present itself as anything from silvery scales to red, itchy, dry patches.

Patients who have psoriasis are also predisposed to develop psoriatic arthritis, causing pain, stiffness and swelling of their joints.

No one knows exactly why psoriasis happens, but genetics, environmental factors and the immune system all figure into it. The condition is not contagious.

Certain events have been linked to triggering the condition into activity. Scientists have not discovered the direct connection but they agree that genetics are definitely involved. Of every three people with psoriasis, one will know a relative with the disease.

Amanda Jackson of Lakeland said, "My dad and his mother had it it is hereditary and not contagious, not at all." Jackson and two of her six children have it as well.

Environmental factors such as stress, injury to skin, infection, certain medications, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, diet and allergies, can act as triggers to turn on the disease. After the initial outbreak, triggers can also cause flare-ups in the psoriasis cycle.

Village pub embroiled in race row over sign showing black boy being scrubbed in bath by white couple

Posted: at 8:42 pm

"We are too upset about offending people these days, even if it means sacrificing our pub heritage. Everybody is outraged. There is not one person who uses this pub that thinks the name or the sign is racist.

"It should stay as it is because the pub is an integral part of the village's history."

Local John Rogers, 80, said he fears the pub and village will lose its identity and its heritage if the name is changed.

He added: "It has been called the Labour In Vain for more than 100 years. They only want to change the name to attract interest and deceive people into thinking it's a new pub.

"I hope the people in the village boycott a new name, I really do."

Brewery Enterprise Inns said it was looking to change the name once it reopens following a refurbishment.

It is understood that Enterprise wants to rename the pub the Yarnfield Arms, although no decision has been made.

Diane Lander, who runs Yarnfield Post Office, has set up a petition that has already attracted around 300 signatures.

The 47-year-old said: "There is strong opposition against it. It has been the Labour In Vain for 166 years."

Village race row over 'politically incorrect' pub whose sign shows white couple washing black child

Posted: at 8:42 pm

A village pub may change its name after becoming embroiled in a race row over their sign which shows a black boy being scrubbed in the bath - by a white couple.

The Labour in Vain, in Yarnfield, Staffordshire, was deemed politically incorrect by council equality chiefs who previously asked the traditional boozer to take their sign down.

But now a brewery taking over the 166-year-old pub are considering changing the name as well - over fears that could be considered racist too.

A row has since broken out with residents who believe the historic country pub should keep the title it was first given in the mid-19th century.

Regular Jimmy Cawdell, 56, said: "If it goes ahead, which we're sure it will, it will be political correctness gone mad.

"We are too upset about offending people these days, even if it means sacrificing our pub heritage.

"Everybody is outraged. There is not one person who uses this pub that thinks the name or the sign is racist.

"It should stay as it is because the pub is an integral part of the village's history."

Local John Rogers, 80, added: It has been called the Labour In Vain for more than 100 years.

I hope the people in the village boycott a new name, I really do."

Web freedom and censorship grows as a global issue

Government censorship of the internet is a cat-and-mouse game, and despite more aggressive tactics in recent months, the cats have been largely frustrated while the mice wriggle away.

But this year the challenges for technology companies will mount, with Russia and Turkey in particular trying to tighten controls on foreign-based internet companies. Companies such as Facebook, Twitter and Google are increasingly being put into the tricky position of discovering which laws and orders to comply with around the world, and which to ignore or contest.

Russian president Vladimir Putin recently signed the latest version of a personal data law that will require companies to store data about Russian users on computers inside the country, where it will be easier for the government to get access to it. Few companies are expected to comply with the law, which goes into effect on September 1, so a confrontation may erupt.

Anton Nosik, a prominent Russian blogger whose work has been censored by regulators, says it is absurd for a government to think itcan easily stamp out an article or video when it can be copied or found elsewhere with a few clicks. "The reader wants to see what he was prevented from seeing," he says. "All that blocking doesn't work."

The Turkish government faced similar embarrassment when it tried to stop the dissemination of leaked documents and audio recordings on Twitter in March. The administration of Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who was then prime minister and is now President, ordered the shutdown of Twitter within Turkey after the company refused to block the posts, which implicated government officials in a corruption investigation.

Not only did the government lose a court fight on the issue, but while Twitter was blocked, legions of Turkish users also taught one another technical tricks to evade the ban, even spray-painting the instructions on the walls of buildings.

"We all became hackers," says Asli Tunc, a professor of communication at Istanbul Bilgi University. "And we all got on Twitter."

Despite such victories for free-speech advocates, governments are stepping up efforts to control the internet, escalating the confrontation. "The trendlines are consistent," says Colin Crowell, Twitter's global vice-president of public policy. "There are more and more requests for removal of information."
