Gene Wilder – Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Posted: February 12, 2015 at 6:35 pm
Jerome Silberman, known professionally as Gene Wilder (born June 11, 1933), is an American stage and screen comic actor, director, screenwriter, author, and activist.
Wilder began his career on stage, and made his screen debut in the TV-series Armstrong Circle Theatre in 1962. Although his first film role was portraying a hostage in the 1967 motion picture Bonnie and Clyde, Wilder's first major role was as Leopold Bloom in the 1968 film The Producers for which he was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. This was the first in a series of collaborations with writer/director Mel Brooks, including 1974's Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, which Wilder co-wrote, garnering the pair an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay. Wilder is known for his portrayal of Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) and for his four films with Richard Pryor: Silver Streak (1976), Stir Crazy (1980), See No Evil, Hear No Evil (1989), and Another You (1991). Wilder has directed and written several of his films, including The Woman in Red (1984).
His third wife was actress Gilda Radner, with whom he starred in three films. Her death from ovarian cancer led to his active involvement in promoting cancer awareness and treatment, helping found the Gilda Radner Ovarian Cancer Detection Center in Los Angeles and co-founding Gilda's Club.
Since his most recent contribution to acting in 2003, Wilder has turned his attention to writing. He has produced a memoir in 2005, Kiss Me Like a Stranger: My Search for Love and Art; a collection of stories, What Is This Thing Called Love? (2010); and the novels My French Whore (2007), The Woman Who Wouldn't (2008) and Something to Remember You By (2013).
He continues to receive critical acclaim, and is regarded as one of the most influential comedic actors of the second half of the 20th century.
Born Jerome Silberman in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, on June 11, 1933, Gene Wilder is the son of William J. and Jeanne (Baer) Silberman. He adopted "Gene Wilder" for his professional name at the age of 26, later explaining, "I had always liked Gene because of Thomas Wolfe's character Eugene Gant in Look Homeward, Angel and Of Time and the River. And I was always a great admirer of Thornton Wilder."[2][3] Wilder first became interested in acting at age 8, when his mother was diagnosed with rheumatic fever and the doctor told him to "try and make her laugh."[4] At the age of 11, he saw his sister, who was studying acting, performing onstage and was enthralled by the experience. He asked her teacher if he could become his student, and the teacher said that if he was still interested at age 13, he would take Wilder on as a student. The day after Wilder turned 13, he called the teacher, who accepted him; Wilder studied with him for 2 years.[5]
When Jeanne Silberman felt that her son's potential was not being fully realized in Wisconsin, she sent him to Black-Foxe, a military institute in Hollywood, where he wrote that he was bullied and sexually assaulted, primarily because he was the only Jewish boy in the school.[6] After an unsuccessful short stay at Black-Foxe, Wilder returned home and became increasingly involved with the local theatre community. At age fifteen, he performed for the first time in front of a paying audience, as Balthasar (Romeo's manservant) in a production of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet.[7] Gene Wilder graduated from Washington High School in Milwaukee in 1951.
Wilder was raised Jewish but holds only the Golden Rule as his philosophy. He described himself as a "Jewish-Buddhist-Atheist" in an interview published in 2005.[1]
Wilder studied Communication and Theatre Arts at the University of Iowa, where he was a member of the Alpha Epsilon Pi Fraternity.[8] Following his 1955 graduation from Iowa, he was accepted at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School in Bristol, England. After six months of studying fencing, Wilder became the first freshman to win the All-School Fencing Championship.[9] Desiring to study Stanislavski's system, he returned to the U.S., living with his sister and her family in Queens. Wilder enrolled at the HB Studio.[10]
Wilder was drafted into the Army on September 10, 1956. At the end of recruit training, he was assigned to the medical corps and sent to Fort Sam Houston for training. He was then given the opportunity to choose any post that was open, and wanting to stay near New York City to attend acting classes at the HB Studio, he chose to serve as paramedic in the Department of Psychiatry and Neurology at Valley Forge Army Hospital, in Phoenixville, Pennsylvania.[11] In November 1957, his mother died from ovarian cancer. He was discharged from the army a year later and returned to New York. A scholarship to the HB Studio allowed him to become a full-time student. At first living on unemployment insurance and some savings, he later supported himself with odd jobs such as a limousine driver and fencing instructor. Wilder's first professional acting job was in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where he played the Second Officer in Herbert Berghof's production of Twelfth Night. He also served as a fencing choreographer.[12]

Tips for a homeless weekend traveler?
So begins a thread on Reddits Washington D.C. subreddit today.
Im flying in for a conference this weekend, from Friday through Sunday afternoon, read the post from strangelycutlemon. I was given enough money to cover travel expenses but not hotel expenses. Any ideas for a place I could lie down and/or charge my phone for the night? Or if I end up walking around all night, whats a good place to visit? Thanks.
The first response was not exactly what the intrepid traveler was hoping for:
Maybe DCs hypothermia shelters? The predicted lows this weekend are 18F(Friday), 7F and maybe snowing (Saturday), and 10F (Sunday). Walking around is not going to be a smart option.
Another poster, Dcgrump, suggested that the visitor walk around the monuments to kill time or look for a cheap hostel to sleep in. Kzanomics suggested the Hotel Tonight app.
No dice, said the traveler: He had less than $15 to spend on a place to stay. He had tried Airbnb, but the host he met backed out on him.
[Inside the libertarian version of Burning Man: Guns, booze and bitcoin]
So who is this guy, and what kind of conference was he going to? It took the Reddit audience exactly one guess to figure out the latter.
Homeless, here for the weekend, that can mean only one thing. . . hello Students for Liberty conference attendee!

An ad-hominem rant by "Lazarus Long", based on the presumption that his opponents use the same attack tactics he does. His most glaring double-speak is that he claims the arguments are strawmen, but he defends them anyway instead of disclaiming them.
My normal policy is not to engage in ad-hominem pissing matches with libertarians, but Lazarus Long has been impugning me for quite a while now. So, I'd like to set the following straight, since it illustrates his debate style. Also, this can serve as an example of how argument with him can mire you endlessly, even when he is grossly wrong.
In his FAS , he writes: Incidentally, even though this article was not written at the time of Huben's e-mail to me, he stated "I'm hardly upset by your "refutation" or any of the other rather pathetic attempts (and yours is indeed the weakest by far.)" In other words... although the refutation had not been written, Huben miraculously claims that it is the weakest by far.
In an ad-hominem web page titled Who is Mike Huben , he writes: An example of his obsession, and lack of intellectual integrity can be seen by a visit to his "Critique of Libertarianism" site. He listed a link to my critique of his Non-Libertarian FAQ, before the critique had been written, along with a description of what was contained in the critique. A most impressive stunt, considering that the critique, not only was not on this site at the time, but hadn't been written.
Now, I'm not known for my psychic powers: how could I have known about his document to criticize it or create a link to it?
Very simple. He had posted it (or an early version) as Huben's FAS (Frequently Asserted Strawmen). in talk.politics.libertarian July 2, 1996. He wrote: This article will appear in full form on my webpage as http://vaxxine.com/rational/huben-bs-fas.htm within the next few weeks. I criticized his post by email, and made a link to the URL he had announced. No magic involved: I was just responding to the information he made publicly available. I'd like to know how he construes this as "obsession, and lack of intellectual integrity".
Most of his attacks and his FAS can be similarly handled. However, responding to them just gives him more material to similarly misuse. He likes to misinterpret non-response as his own triumph over the cowardly, but I trust most readers can see that he's a legend in his own mind.

Breaking news: Love is no longer the aggresive, beating heart of February! Or at least you wouldnt know that it is just by considering the movies coming out this month. Whereas in past Februarys (Februaries?), we cinephiles have been bombarded with all manner of romantic films --- comedies, dramas, classics and otherwise --- this year Hollywood seems to have given us a much-needed break. So unless you consider Fifty Shades of Grey a love story for the ages (no judgment), there is neither a lovestruck heroine nor a grand romantic gesture in sight. It looks like we dodged a heart-shaped bullet this year...at least until March!
Speaking of Fifty Shades ---and disastrous press tours aside --- the adaptation of the megaseller E L James novel is clearly the Main Event this month. It stars Jamie Dornan as the titular tortured billionaire with decidedly dark sexual preferences, and Dakota Johnson as the girl who (literally; E L James is not known for her subtle use of metaphor) falls for him. Listen, say what you will about bickering co-stars and on-set tension between director and author, this book has sold over 100 million copies. Meaning, at the height of its popularity, a copy was being boughtevery second somewhere in the world. You cant argue with those numbers. Personally, my inner goddess and I are definitely feeling appropriately acrobatic in anticipation of the movie.
If you dont feel like being a statistic this month (or youre just waiting to watch Fifty Shades on VOD --- the movie version of the more, er, discreet eBook), you can always catch Kingsman: The Secret Service, based on the similarly titled comic series by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. If the trailer is any indication, it looks like a fun, irreverent take on the more buttoned-up Bond movies. And in case you get snowed in, there are plenty of past Books on Screen movies now available on DVD, including The Theory of Everything, Big Hero 6 and Dracula Untold. And iffff you absolutely insist on seeing something romantic this month, the Nicholas Sparks tearjerker, The Best of Me, is also available for at-home viewing.
Television remains consistent, with two new shows joining the fray: The Slap on NBC and The Book of Negroes on BET. Both are being broadcast in a limited capacity as miniseries, so get em while theyre hot. And, of course, our usual menagerie of vampires, detectives and superheroes is still at large on small screens this month.
So whether youre spending Valentines Day with your significant other or renewing your vows of forever to Netflix, theres something for everyone this month. Go out there, Books on Screen readers, and spread the love!
In Theaters:
Fifty Shades of Grey Cast:Dakota Johnson, Jamie Dornan Director:Sam Taylor-Johnson Distributor:Universal Pictures/Focus Features MPAA Rating:R Release Date:February 13th Based on:FIFTY SHADES OF GREY by E L James
When literature student Anastasia Steele goes to interview young entrepreneur Christian Grey, she encounters a man who is beautiful, brilliant and intimidating. The unworldly, innocent Ana is startled to realize she wants this man and, despite his enigmatic reserve, finds she is desperate to get close to him. Unable to resist Anas quiet beauty, wit and independent spirit, Grey admits he wants her, too --- but on his own terms.
Shocked yet thrilled by Greys singular erotic tastes, Ana hesitates. For all the trappings of success --- his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, his loving family --- Grey is a man tormented by demons and consumed by the need to control. When the couple embarks on a daring, passionately physical affair, Ana discovers Christian Greys secrets and explores her own dark desires.
