WorldViews: Do church bells violate human rights? One Austrian thinks so.
Posted: February 13, 2015 at 2:47 pm
Austrian architect Wolfgang Lassy says he hasn't been able to get a good night's restfor years, with theCatholic Church wakinghim up every 15 minutes.
That's because forhundreds of years, the church bells of Linzwere allowed to chime at night every quarter of an hour, disrupting many residents' sleep. Now, Lassy is seeking to endthecenturies-old practice. The Austrian has sued the Catholic Church in Linz and has even expressedhis deep discontentin a letter to Pope Francis. So far, he hasn't heard back from the Holy See.
"Lassy has been unable to sleep at night for years because the church bells chimed exactly 222 times every night with a volume of 75 decibels," Lassy's lawyer, Wolfgang List, told The Washington Post on Thursday. His clientlives only about 250 feetaway from the Mariendom cathedral, which houses the bells.
According to his lawyer, Lassy had tried to resolve the problem for two years before he decided to take his concerns to court last December. When it became clear that the local church representatives would not simply stop the bells without a holy or judicial order to do so, Lassy sent a letter to the pope Feb. 4.
Saying that a lawsuit was nottheir preferred way of dealing with the problem, List wrote: "The chiming of the bells has no religious background, but it causes massive sleeping disorders for the neighbors of the Mariendom in Linz, with significant repercussions for their health, such as states of exhaustion."
"The European Court ofHuman Rights in Strasbourg has declared a night's rest a human right," the letter to the Holy Father goes on. "We therefore beseech you, Holy Father, to intervene to ensure that human right of the people of Linz to a healthy and refreshing nights sleep is respected and that the bells no longer chime at night. The European Convention on Human Rights does in factprohibitsleep deprivation, arguing that aviolation of this rulecan constitute an actof torture.
The letter to the pope does not use the word torture. Instead, its senders address more subtle problems in the interaction between Austrians and representatives of the church. "We hope that you, Holy Father, can be a role model for the Catholic Church in Austria by being more connected to the needs and problems of ordinary [believers]," the documentcontinues.
Both the Catholic Church and Wolfgang Lassy have shown intransigence. On Feb. 24, both parties will meet to discuss a possible solution through non-judicial means.
"For us, however, such a solution could only consist of a chiming ban from 10 p.m. until 6 a.m.," List told The Post.
Rick Noack writes about foreign affairs. He is an Arthur F. Burns Fellow at The Washington Post.

Space Station Astronauts In Star Wars-Themed Crew Pic
Posted: at 6:37 pm
Something's definitely going on at NASA. We're thinking someone in the public relations department is trying to blow the dust off the space agency's ever-serious image.
First there was the photo below, deemed by almost anyone with a pulse as unquestionably the best astronaut portrait ever:
And now, the Expedition 45 crew, scheduled to go to the International Space Station in September, is having fun with Jedi robes and light sabers:
Collectspace.com says the shot is titled "International Space Station Expedition XLV: The Science Continues." The crew will make up the station's first year-long mission.
The website says: "The poster's theme and layout was reportedly the idea of [Kjell] Lindgren (bottom left in the photo), who will be making his first trip into space with this mission. NASA photographers and graphic artists at the Johnson Space Center in Houston brought the poster together, digitally adding the lightsabers and background."

NASA TV Previews and Broadcasts Space Station U.S. Spacewalks
Posted: at 6:37 pm
Two NASA astronauts from the International Space Stations Expedition 42 crew will venture outside the orbital complex on Friday, Feb. 20; Tuesday, Feb. 24; and Sunday, March 1. They will prepare cables and communications gear for new docking ports that will allow future crews launched from Florida on U.S. commercial spacecraft to dock to the space station.
NASA TV will provide comprehensive coverage, beginning with a preview news briefing Wednesday, Feb. 18.
The preview briefing will be broadcast at 2 p.m. EST from NASAs Johnson Space Center in Houston. Media may take part in person or by telephone. Reporters who want to ask questions by phone must call Johnsons newsroom at 281-483-5111 no later than 1:45 p.m. Wednesday. Cell phones are discouraged.
The panelists for the briefing are:
Kenneth Todd, International Space Station Operations and Integration manager
Tomas Gonzalez-Torres, Expedition 42 lead flight director
Karina Eversley, Extravehicular Activity (EVA) # 29 officer
Sarah Korona, EVA # 30 officer
Arthur Thomason, EVA # 31 officer
Expedition 42 Commander Barry Wilmore and Flight Engineer Terry Virts will exit the station from the Quest airlock for each of the three spacewalks around 7:10 a.m. NASA TV coverage of the approximately six-and-a-half hour spacewalks will begin at 6 a.m.

How the Eastern tiger swallowtail got 'scary'
Posted: at 6:36 pm
As butterflies go, the Eastern tiger swallowtail is pretty scary. Their caterpillars look more like stubby snakes, complete with a fake green head, faux black and yellow eyes, and an orange, forked, fleshy "tongue." That tongue-like structure (officially called an osmeterium) can evert, expand, and move, releasing a stinky substance in the process.
Scientists know a lot about these popular butterflies -- which are honored as the state insect in five states despite the appearance and odor associated with their young -- but they hadn't managed to sequence their genome. Now, researchers writing in the Cell Press journal Cell Reports on February 12th have sequenced the complete genome of one wild-caught individual, and they say that it has already told them more than they had anticipated about the butterflies and some of their most intriguing features.
The report also shows that it's now possible to buy the genome of essentially any wild insect for a very reasonable price. That ability opens the door for sequencing many more genomes at an even faster pace, which is necessary if scientists are going to get better at learning to predict or perhaps even change an animal's characteristics based on their DNA alone.
"With our protocols, the cost per new genome falls below $4,000, making insect sequencing projects feasible for college and, in the foreseeable future, high school students," said Nick Grishin of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center. "Go out, catch a bug, sequence the genome, learn something new. Isn't it wonderful?"
Now back to those swallowtails: Grishin said their primary goal was really to devise a way to sequence genomes with high levels of genetic variation at a reasonable cost, but they were in for some surprises. The genome data uncovered mutations in proteins that are responsible for the circadian rhythm, which might explain why Eastern tiger swallowtails break free of their chrysalises right away instead of sleeping through the winter as their cousins the Canadian tiger swallowtails must do.
They also found something that appears to explain where the caterpillars got that stinky substance they use to scare off predators. The analysis shows that a gene encoding enzymes that synthesize stinky terpenes got multiplied in the swallowtail genome. The butterflies have many diverse proteins in the family instead of just one or two.
Cool as the Eastern tiger swallowtails may be, the new findings are just the beginning of many more butterfly genomes yet to come. "We think the power of comparative genomics can be fully exploited only when there are thousands of genomes available," Grishin said. Stay tuned.
