Ask Warren Ellis Your Craziest Questions About The Future

Posted: March 11, 2015 at 7:41 am

To help us kick off the new White Noise, Warren Ellis has graciously agreed to answer our questions about the future. Ask the creator of Transmetropolitan and the popularizer of the bowel disruptor what's on your mind. We'll send some choice questions over and publish his answers later this week.

This Q/A is my first intrepid undertaking as editor of White Noise. Never give up on your dreams, folks. I was thrilled by the badass feedback on our reboot post and the awesome range of people who are ready to contribute to this site. If you haven't yet, head over to that post and tell us what you want to cover what topics you'd love to write, read, photograph, draw, or debate about, and why. Then come back here with a question for Warren Ellis.

Ellis is the force behind the graphic novels Transmetropolitan, Planetary, Red, and Global Frequency, has worked on every comics property you've ever heard of, is the author of the best-selling Gun Machine, and has a demonstrated knack for seeing which way where we're trending with technology. Much of his work specializes in "transhumanist" themes like nanotech, body modification, and cryonics y'know, the good stuff. When he agreed to appear on White Noise, I high-fived my Spider Jerusalem action figure.

At a reading, I once stood up to tremulously ask Ellis what fantastical tech he'd most like to see come about in our lifetime, and received the answer of teleportation. Then I texted my friends "We are the same, Warren Ellis and I. I don't think I'm breathing."

What if you could ask Warren Ellis anything about the future?

5 Comics to Read Before Watching the New Series Powers

Posted: at 7:41 am

When you dive into Powers, the new series hitting Sony PlayStation this week, youre entering into a world where superheroes and villains exist, but its the poor schlubs of the police force who have to clean everything up afterwards. Its a take on the genre that might be surprising for audiences more used to the sleek government agencies of the Marvel universe, but you get used to it. It also helps if youve consumed the source materialparticularly the works of Brian Michael Bendis and Michael Avon Oeming, who co-created the comics the show is based on. Heres a quick reading list to help you prepare.

The relationship between the Powers comic book and TV show is akin to that between the comic and TV versions of The Walking Dead: the characters and overall situation are the same, and some events are shared, but theyre essentially alternate takes on the same ideas. That means you can read the earliest issues of Bendis and Oemings comic and think of them as an ersatz preview of whats to come, instead of a series of spoilers for the show itself. How to read it: Available digitally and in print collections as Who Killed Retro Girl?, Roleplay, and Little Deaths.

The first issues of the comic book series second volume might be a jump ahead from the previous selectionthe first volume ran 37 issues and one annual in totalbut the Legends storyline might prove particularly important for one of the characters at the center of the Powers show. No spoilers here, but once you see the first episode and wonder if Calista (played in the show by Olesya Rulin) will get the superpowers she longs for, youll find yourself tempted to skip to the answer in here. (The second volumes revised premise, which sees superpowers outlawed as the result of an apocalyptic event in the previous series, also hints at a potential future for the TV show; think of it as a somewhat involved What if?) How to read it: Available digitally and in the Legends print collection.

Outside of the realm of Powers, another comic book written by Bendis also offers some of the attitude on display in the show. Scarlet might not feature superpowers, but its focus on the beginnings of a social insurrectionand, in particular, the young girl at the center of it alltouches on some of the generational issues on display in the Powers show, as well as showing a somewhat less favorable attitude towards the authorities. You can almost imagine Scarlet being one of the younger characters bitter at those with superpowers and hanging around with Calista, in many ways. (Lovely art by Alex Maleev, as well.) How to read it: Available digitally and in a print collection.

For those looking for more straight-forward superheroics, Powers co-creator Michael Avon Oeming is also the man behind The Victories, a straight-up superhero epic, complete with Superman and Batman analogs (Metatron and Faustus, respectively). Oeming described the series as being about the heroes behind the mask, which makes it a good companion piece to the equally-grounded Powers if one thats a little more sympathetic to the guys in tights. How to read it: Available digitally and in the Transhuman, Posthuman and Metahuman print collections.

And now for something completely different: Bendis and Oeming dont just collaborate on Powers; theyre also the co-creators of a kid-friendly series called Takio, about two sisters who end up with superpowers and decide to use them to fight crime. The series, which so far consists of two graphic novels, has a similar sense of humor and the frenetic pacing of Powers, but replaces the satirical grimness of the latter with something far more zany, for want of a better word. Think of it as the pitch for the next Sony PlayStation series. How to read it: Available digitally and in print editions.

Op-ed: John Kerry Needs to Do the Right Thing in Egypt

Posted: at 7:41 am

Promoting an economic summit in a nation jailing LGBT people is not living up to the self-stated ideals of the State Department.

On February 27, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry swore in the nations first special envoy for the human rights of LGBT persons, a new diplomatic post created to contend against homophobia worldwide. At a posh D.C. reception, Kerry made familiar promises. In country after country, LGBT communities face discriminatory laws and practices that attack their dignity, undermine their safety, and violate their human rights. Thats unacceptable. And we believe it has to change.

The night before, police arrested seven people in Cairo. The Egyptian governments pet press organs trumpeted that they were dangerous transsexuals (some may indeed be transgender, though their identities remain unclear). The vice squad seized them in a nightclub but proudly proclaimed it had monitored them through fake social media profiles, part of a police strategy to infiltrate LGBT communities and exploit peoples desperate isolation. The victims face charges of debauchery, the term in Egyptian law for sex between men. Theyve been jailed since then; were told the guards have mistreated them and denied them food. They are only the latest victims of a huge state crackdown on alleged trans and gay people that has imprisoned more than 150 since 2013.

John Kerry now heads to Egypt, to raise money for the government that jailed them, at an economic summit there this week.

The irony is blatant; the hypocrisy, shameful. In 2011, Hillary Clinton, Kerrys predecessor, declared that gay rights are human rights, and the Obama White House loudly moved those rights to the fore of its diplomacy. For Clintons presidential ambitions and for an administration that needs gay voters and donors the international initiative has been great domestic politics. Abroad, where it counts, it sometimes looks less impressive. Kerry is happy to throw LGBT peoples freedoms out the window while courting the Egyptian regime; his casual self-contradiction shows how little the promises matter. For Obamas foreign policy, LGBT rights like human rights in general are a talking point, not a priority.

The human rights situation in Egypt is appalling. Since now-President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi took power in a 2013 military coup, jail cells have swelled with over 40,000 political prisoners. Courts hand down life sentences or death sentences for the simple act of holding a demonstration. The government threatens to shut down Egypts embattled civil society, including its few, brave human rights groups. A presidential decree means that activists who accept foreign funding could face life in prison. Since the coup, security forces have killed over 1,500 protesters, mostly Islamists mostly in cold blood.

The regime adeptly manipulates the language of the war on terror. It claims its brutal repression is needed to combat radicalism and protect security. A recent report in Mada Masr one of the few remaining independent press outlets in Egypt shows how, instead, the heavy-handed suppression of dissent feeds extremist movements by leaving citizens no political outlet for discontent. The ongoing arrests of alleged LGBT people, however, are the clearest if cruelest refutation of the antiterrorism claims. Accused trans women and alleged gay men are no terrorists. They pose no threat to the state. The public campaign to extirpate them is about power, not security. Its an attempt to revive the reach and reputation of the police, by publicizing their onslaught against an unpopular minority. Its part of resuscitating the old Mubarak dictatorships machineries of control.

The U.S. watches these brutalities with only perfunctory protest. America gives almost $1.5 billion in annual assistance to Egypt, almost all of it aid to the military that wields the levers of repression. Kerry has personally fought attempts to tie that military largesse to democratic reform.

This weeks trip to Egypt, however, is a particularly gross insult to human rights activists still carrying on the struggle there. The Sisi regime is holding a vast economic summit to draw foreign investment. The investment opportunities on offer skyscrapers, tourist resorts, new desert cities promise little help to most Egyptians. But Sisi needs the appearance of attracting international business to give a despairing populace hope he can revive a decayed economy. The summit is about legitimating the dictatorship, not uplifting Egypts millions of poor.

Kerry is coming to give his credibility to the show. Hes putting the full weight of the United States behind the fundraising efforts of a repressive military government.

Future Trends and Fluid Power: Global Futurist Jack Uldrich to Address the NFPA

Posted: at 7:40 am

San Diego, CA (PRWEB) March 11, 2015

When it comes to the future of energy, futurist Jack Uldrich says, The nature of how power is being produced, distributed and consumed is changing and so must those who run the industry.

The world is going to change tomorrow--this is certain, says Uldrich. If people dont pick up on these subtle changes, theyll end up locked up, inflexible and potentially out of business. Technology is going to require the energy industry to be nimble and adaptable in order to steer themselves into the future.

Uldrich is slated to address the National Fluid Power Associations Annual Conference in San Diego tomorrow, March 12th. According the NFPA, Fluid power is a term describing hydraulics and pneumatics technologies. Fluid power has the highest power density of all conventional power- transmission technologies.

Uldrich will deliver his keynote, The Big AHA: How to Future-Proof Yourself Against Tomorrow's Trends, Today. He will discuss a variety of technological advancements that will impact the fluid power industry such as wearable technology that will to control and automate smart homes to optimize energy efficiency, 3-D manufacturing, mobile computing which will reduce the need for physical stores, reducing real estate and energy costs, nanotechnology, robotics, sensors, and supercomputers.

Uldrich, a highly acclaimed futurist and public speaker whose aim is to help the NFPA and their member companies thrive in increasingly competitive energy markets. Uldrich has worked with a number of companies and dozens of trade associations in the utility industry. Some of his recent keynotes have been delivered at ABBs recent product launch tour on sensors, the CleaResults Energy Summit, Western Energy Institute, Southern Company, SDG&E, SMUD, Eaton, BP, the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association, Missouri River Energy, Northwest Energy, Idaho Power and the Northeast and Northwest Public Power Associations.

Parties interested in learning more about him, his books, his daily blog or his speaking availability are encouraged to visit his website. Media wishing to know more about either the event or interviewing Jack as a futurist or trend expert can contact Amy Tomczyk at (651) 343.0660.

Tomorrowland today: watch the trailer for George Clooney's sci-fi blockbuster

Posted: at 7:40 am

Given the seemingly endless influx of sequels, remakes, reboots and reimaginings, the prospect of an original blockbuster is quite thrilling. While recent attempts (Jupiter Ascending, Chappie) have been patchy, Brad Birds latest adventure, Tomorrowland, looks set to buck the trend.

Weve already been treated to a deviously mysterious teaser, which offered a glimpse of the universe that was being created. Now a full-length trailer has supplied us with a deeper look at what to expect.

Related: The 88 movies we're most excited about in 2015

The film follows a wayward teen, played by Britt Robertson, who finds herself in the possession of a magical pin that can transport her to a fantastical other world. Her search for details leads her to George Clooneys boy genius turned resentful older man, and Hugh Laurie, who appears to be evil.

The second trailer offers more snapshots of the futuristic Tomorrowland, which shares the same name as a themed area of Disneyland. It also contain some recognisable rides, including Space Mountain, so we wouldnt put it past Disney to subsequently reveal stronger links between the park and the film.

Interestingly, the title appears to have been tweaked for international audiences. While its being promoted as Tomorrowland in the US, the latest UK trailer has it down as Tomorrowland: A World Beyond. Meanwhile, due to a naming conflict with a music festival, it will be called TomorrowWorld in some European countries.

Tomorrowland: A World Beyond appears in cinemas on 22 May.
