It's All About Amazing Aloe

Posted: at 2:41 am

Friday might be the first day of spring on the calendar, but it seems the only things green in my life outside of salads aremy houseplants.

Though I have a few varieties including jade, spider plants, and even a small fig tree, there is one plant that outshines and outgrows the rest.

It is the aloe plants that soar and thrive. Theymake me feel like I have a green thumb and have become my verdant companions. And I mean plants, plural. Over a dozen aloe plants fill my home, all from the same mother plant.

The mother plant came to me early in my time here on the Island and has followed me through a few homes. I inherited a small, dying aloe plant in 2000 when I moved into a studio apartment. Along with some books, it was left by the houses former inhabitant who had passed away somewhat untimely.

It became my mission to nurse this plant back to health. And it thrived, Im glad to say, providing babies to split off and share with others.

Aloe has been a valued household plant for, well, forever. Ancient Greek physician Dioscoradis was an early believer in the values of aloe. He thought that the juices of the plant had the power of binding, inducing sleep, loosening the belly, and cleansing the stomach. In addition, he recommended that the sap be used to treat boils, hemorrhoids, bruises and mouth irritation, and was a good medicine for the eyes. It could also stop the bleeding of wounds.

Dioscoradis was on to something, since aloe is still used today both topically and internally. Two components of this plant have been used medicinally and cosmetically.

The gel is what most of us are familiar with, and is used for relief from sunburns and other burns. It is also good for other skin issues, including psoriasis, cold sores and frostbite. The gel can also be ingested and has been used to sooth the pains of osteoarthritis, bowel disease, ulcers, diabetes and asthma. The Bible makes reference to an application of aloeto Jesuss wounds, and Queen Cleopatra used this gel as a daily beauty treatment.

The other part of the plant that may not be as familiar is the latex, found just under the surface of the leafs skin. The latex is yellow compared to the clear gel. Its use, however, has been controversial: in the early 2000s, the Food and Drug Administration effectively banned it, required it be removed from laxatives and all over-the-counter medicines.

If you are not sure about using this plant for medicine, consider its other benefits. Congolese hunters coated themselves in it to obscure their scent when hunting. In other parts of Africa, aloe was hung over a homes door to bring luck and drive away evil. Inside the house, it is thought to prevent household accidents, especially burns. And best of all, according to ancient Egyptians, who called aloe the plant of immortality, is its ability to provide eternal youth. This promise was made, ironically, after a persons death, since the plant was included in funeral offerings.

Editors note:Geoffrey Woo and Michael Brandt are cofounders of Nootrobox, an e-commercenootropics company.

Biohacking and transhumanist advances (including nootropics, extended longevity, cybernetic implants, better behavioral and genetic self-understanding) will materially advance our quality of life and productivity in the coming decade, but we need to be thoughtful about the potential social and ethical pitfalls as we transform. Google Trends shows a marked uptick in searches for nootropics and related biohacking fields, so now is the time to have the conversation about the direction were headed.

Digital products and companies are not just changing the way we live our lives, but also playing larger and more influential roles in public policy and governance. This trend of the technology industry driving broader social policy will perhaps be even greater with biohacking companies as their product innovations begin to alter and transform what it means to be human.

Biohacking is simply the next frontier in the drive to better ourselves. People will enhance themselves physically to have better bones, better eyesandbetter resilience to disease, as well asattain an overall better standard of living. More people will have access to their full potential. However from an ethics perspective, theres already worrying concerns about the widening socio-economic gap around the world today; theres an argument that when only the wealthy have access, it further separates the haves from the have-nots.

Bill McKibben, a prominent critic of a hyper-segregated, Gattaca-esque version of the future, cautions that biohacking technologies like genetic enhancement would take the gap in power, wealth, and education that currently divides both our society and the world at large, and write that division into our very biology.

From a technology perspective, this bifurcation story just hasnt played out. Over and over again, weve seen new technologies popularize and achieve economies of scale, and then quickly drop in price and diffuse across all levels of society. Increasing market demand leads to new research and production techniques that in the long run drive down the price of fundamentally useful new devices and technologies. 23andMe initially provided genetic reports for $299, and within several years were able to cut itsprice by two-thirds.

Research into nootropics and other biometric and bio-enhancement technologies requires significant R&D investment and innovative new methods of production and distribution. The cutting edge of any tech is expensive, but prices come down with time. Biohacking companies should follow the examples of Google Loonand Facebooks Internet.org, bringing basic technologies to the world as a service to society, democratizing access and encouraging participation in the commerce of the future.

If a tool or technology provides a positive return for society at large, government subsidy may be a viable option, similar to how national and local governments provide baseline health and vision care, free education, computers in libraries, and Internet access in public spaces.

New forms of functional ingestables, including meal replacement products like Soylentand nootropic stacks produced by Nootroboxand DIY resources like Longecity and Peak Nootropics, as well as quantified self-tracking tools like Fitbit, Android Wearand the Apple Watchare already enabling us to better quantify and manage the way we spend our 24 hours each day.

Technological advancement is expanding beyond our current digital sensors and interfaces, and as we apply the hacker ethos to our own bodies and minds to develop safe, cheap and accessible technologies, we will see this value-per-worker ratio continue to rise.

Futurists will convene to discuss bots, biometrics and all things forward-thinking at the first-ever Transhuman Strategies conference

Prospect silicon valley, a nonprofit clean-tech commercialization incubator, sits on Las Plumas Avenue in East San Jose, somewhere between King Road and 101.

Located in a mysterious wilderness of business parks and industrial landscapes, the venue already seems "out there" beyond good and evil, beyond native and exotic, beyond urban and suburban. So it seems fitting in post-cyberpunk fashion that San Jose's first-ever Transhuman Strategies conference will unfold this Saturday.

Our old pal R.U. Sirius and several other edge-thinking provocateurs will wax poetic about life extension, biohacking, anti-aging technologies, neuroscience, biometrics and all sorts of subjects related to transhumanism. In particular, Sirius, along with compadre Jay Cornell, will sign copies of their new book, Transcendence: The Disinformation Encyclopedia of Transhumanism and the Singularity.

Crudely simplified, transhumanism (sometimes abbreviated as H+) is a futurist ideology aiming to enhance the intellectual, physical and psychological capacities of humans. In many cases, the discussion revolves around the use or misuse of technology to augment human capability. For example, this could involve cutting-edge medical research in anti-aging, the use of nanobots in your bloodstream, or even the garage tinkerer taking a scalpel to himself and implanting diodes in his fingers. There's a wide variety of activity and discussion continuing to unfold, all under the banner of transhumanism. There's even a magazine called H+.

"Transhumanists believe that humans can, should and have an implicit right to enhance themselves through technology beyond the currently perceived limits," Sirius tells me. "Currently, the focus is largely on slowing, stopping and perhaps reversing aging soon. This means increased healthspan as well as lifespan. And on increased intelligence, whether through neural and chemical interventions or through unifying with advanced artificial intelligence."

Way back in the pre-Internet days of the late '80s/early '90s, Sirius co-founded Mondo 2000, a pioneering magazine of radical technology, cyberpunk visions, fractals, drugs, artificial intelligence, cellular automata, raves, robot sex, electronic music and other faster-than-light energy fields for the tech-savvy masses. Ten years ago, he also published Counterculture Through the Ages: From Abraham to Acid House, a cosmopolitan romp through dropout culture from biblical patriarchs to the current day. (Abraham being the first dropout, of course.) These days, Sirius shows up in all the transhumanism arguments. His new book, Transcendence, is yet another taxonomic table-spread of characters, movements, technologies and ideas intended to apply a sense of humor to the whole shooting match. Sirius says the time was right for such a book.

"In 1993, I coauthored Mondo 2000: A User's Guide to the New Edge, which told people about the digital reality that was about to swallow them up," Siri

us says. "Now seems like a good time to talk about how robotics, longevity drugs, replaceable parts and a whole host of other transhumanoid technologies are likely to start having an effect." Several others on the cutting-edge will present at the conference, which begins with a "Meet & Greet" session from 12:15-1pm, followed by speakers from 1-5pm. In one case, Hank Pellissier, director of the Brighter Brains Institute, has produced eight transhumanist conferences in in the last few years, while also authoring Invent Utopia Now: Transhumanist Suggestions for the Pre-Singularity Era, and Brighter Brains: 225 ways to elevate or injure IQ. In another case, life extension activist Maria Konovalenko is a Biology of Aging PhD student at USC and also Vice President of the Science for Life Extension Foundation in Moscow. Even better, the writer, futurist and philosopher Zoltan Istvan is the founder of the Transhumanist political party and is that party's 2016 presidential candidate. All of these innovative characters will dazzle the audience with radical forward-thinking ideas on how to augment the human lifespan.

Sirius says that even though Google and DARPA are working on huge projects related to transhumanist ideas, there's a tremendous fervor below the surface, whether it's citizen science, biohacking or even maker culture.

Myanmar: Prosecute perpetrators, not human rights defenders

Posted: at 2:40 am

Myanmar authorities should stop prosecuting and threatening journalists and human rights defenders for reporting and speaking out about human rights abuses, Fortify Rights has said.

On 28 January, the Myanmar military threatened legal action against anyone alleging that the military is responsible for the killings of two ethnic-Kachin women on 20 January. The following day, the office of President Thein Sein directed the threat to members of the media.

These threats follow the ongoing prosecution of Brang Shawng, an ethnic-Kachin man who faces criminal charges for alleging that the Myanmar military is responsible for the death of his 14-year-old daughter, Ja Seng Ing.

Were seeing worrying trends. Wartime violence against civilians is continuing and the Myanmar military is increasingly using the justice system as a tool to silence critics, said Matthew Smith, executive director of Fortify Rights. The authorities should ensure swift justice for misconduct by soldiers rather than shielding them from public scrutiny and accountability.

On 20 January, the bodies of two ethnic Kachin women Maran Lu Ra, 19, and Tangbau Khawn Nan Tsin, 20, both volunteer teachers were discovered in a room they shared in Kaungkha village, northern Shan State. Pictures from the scene show multiple stab wounds on their partially-clothed bodies, which were severely battered and bloodied.

In the days that followed, villagers from Kaungkha village and various human rights organisations alleged that soldiers from the Myanmar Armys Light Infantry Battalion (LIB) 503 raped and murdered the women. Military personnel reportedly sealed off access to Kaungkha village in the days following the murders and were involved in an investigation by local police into the crimes.

On 28 January, Myawady, a journal operated by the Myanmar military, published a statement citing an ongoing investigation into the crime and claiming the Myanmar Army was not involved in this murder case according to evidence analysed by criminal police and other cooperating investigation teams.

The militarys statement in Myawady went on to threaten legal action against anyone who alleges that the military known in Myanmar as the Tatmadaw was involved in the murders, stating, The Tatmadaw will take action based on the rule of law against those who accuse [soldiers] and write about it after the official report is released by the investigation team.

Zaw Htay, a spokesperson for the office of President Thein Sein, supported the militarys statement, telling the independent news agency, The Irrawaddy, that media outlets could face legal action if they allege military responsibility for the murders.

The authorities should retract their threats of legal action against those alleging military involvement in the murders and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice, Fortify Rights said. Fortify Rights is also calling for an independent international investigation, including Myanmar partners, into alleged violations of international human rights, criminal, and humanitarian law committed by all parties to Myanmars various ongoing armed conflicts.

Half-human, half-cow baby born in Cavite?

Posted: at 2:40 am

A viral Facebook post claims that a half-human, half-cow baby was born recently in Cavite, in the same town where a man raped a pregnant cow. Last Sunday, March 15, one Rhina Panda attached a photo of the creature with a caption that says a cow has given birth to a human-like calf.

The image already garnered over 7,000 shares as of 8:40 p.m. today.

It turned out that the photo was grabbed from a YouTube video published in 2007.

According to a 2-year-old post on Google+, a buffalo gave birth to a human-like calf in Thailand. The upper parts of its body, particularly the head, bore a striking resemblance to a baby, but its feet and internal organs were recognized as those of a cow.

The calf died immediately, the post read, adding that residents of the unnamed Thai village gathered to pray for blessings (shown in the following screen-caps) with a strong belief that the strange phenomenon could bring luck.

Jon Stewart 'reveals' his post-'Daily Show' gig, 'Hatewatch'

Posted: at 2:40 am

Jon Stewart finally lined up a post-Daily Showgig on last nights episode:a brand-new C-SPAN2 show calledHatewatch with Jon Stewart, where he acts as a watchdog over Congress. Then, he promptly quit.

The Senate failed to pass ahuman sex-trafficking bill, which originally had full support of both Republicans and Democrats, because Republicans hid an anti-abortion amendment in the text and Dems want to expunge it. What does C-SPAN2 Jon Stewart call this Republican move? Fkery.

But wait, theres more: Turns out the holdup is happening now because the Democratsdidnt fully read the bill in the first place. This includes thepartys head, Senator Harry Reid, whose last name, as Stewart pointed out, is literally read. What does C-SPAN2 Jon Stewart call this Democrat move? Dumbassery.

Watch the rest of the clip below, including Stewartsemotional resignation:
