Kenya: Amran Abdundi – "This Award is for the Marginalised Women of Northern Kenya"

document

London Kenyan activist Amran Abdundi, winner of the 2015 Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Award for Campaigning, spoke at the ceremony in London on 18 March.

Amran Abdundi is an activist who, through various channels, has worked to make life safer in northeastern Kenya supporting women who are vulnerable to rape, female circumcision and murder. Despite death threats, Abdundi's Frontier Indigenous Network (FIN) has set up shelters along the dangerous border between Kenya and Somalia, an area where militant terrorist groups pose a threat to many. Alongside these shelters, FIN also maps out conflict areas, targets the illegal arms trade which fuels local conflict and has set up radio listening groups. As a way of reaching women in remote areas, these circles help to dispel myths about tuberculosis treatment and female property ownership, and to tackle doctrines spread by the area's terror organisations. She is the recipient of the 2015 Index on Censorship Freedom of Expression Award for Campaigning.

I want to thank the judges who selected me for this award after going through so many worthwhile and wonderful nominations that were submitted from around the world. Equally I want to thank Index on Censorship's staff. I will be eternally indebted to you all.

This award goes to marginalised women of northern Kenya whom I have worked with closely for the last ten years and who have joined hands with me in fighting outdated cultural practices that deny them the right to own property, expose them to dangerous practices like FGM, and threaten them with sexual exploitation.

The award also goes to conflict concubines who were abducted by armed youths in the height of armed violence in northern Kenya and acted as comfort women for armed militias. When these women came back from conflict zones with children born out of wedlock, they were rejected by their families. This award is for them.

Society rejected them and they live in separate makeshift areas outside normal settlement areas in northern Kenya. Working together with the conflict concubines we engaged various stakeholders women leaders, elders, local government officials, cultural leaders and youths in order to open a dialogue. This led to partial acceptance by the community in accommodating them. I am still working in engaging the stakeholders to fully accept them and still hope to integrate the conflict concubines in mainstream society.

This award also goes to women who through my organizational campaign are today enjoying their constitutional right to own property, land and livestock. This is contrary to past practice when all lands, livestocks and properties acquired by women was registered in name of their husbands. Or if the woman was single or widowed, her brother or father's name. Our campaign and advocacy managed to break that outdated cultural practice.

The award also goes to women victims of armed violence perpetrated by terrorist groups, community militias and gangs along the Kenya/Somalia border. Thugs who have used their armed power to attack, rape, gang rape and block women fleeing droughts from reaching Dadaab refugee camp in northern Kenya. We used our loud speakers to confront the attackers and we documented the abuses along the border.

I have done all these things not to win any award or recognition but because of a grave reality on the ground. A horror which moved me to join hands with other women and form a woman-led organisation called FRONTIER INDIGENOUS NETWORK.

Anti-censorship site Greatfire.org suffers massive DDoS attack

Posted: at 3:42 pm

GreatFire.org, the website with the aim of delivering uncensored news to China, has been hit by a massive DDoS attack. The attack started on March 17 but the anti-censorship site has only just gone public about it and made a call for help.

The organization believes that the attack -- which it calls "censorship by brute force" -- could be a response to an article in the Wall Street Journal. With a peak of 2.6 billion page requests per hour, servers were simply unable to cope with the traffic, knocking GreatFire.org's mirror sites offline.

This is the first time GreatFire.org has ever fallen victim to a DDoS attack, and it is not the only group trying to get uncensored news through the Great Firewall of China -- Reporters Without Borders is also fighting censorship. It is not yet clear who is behind the attacks, but the fingers of blame are pointing towards the Chinese government.

Talking to the BBC, Professor Alan Woodward from the University of Surrey explained that the attackers were bombarding the sites that are normally blocked so they cannot be accessed using any form of circumvention. He said:

"It is difficult not to conclude that someone, most likely a government annoyed that Greatfire has enabled previously censored websites to neuter their censoring technology, has decided to fight back".

One theory for the reason behind the attacks -- other than ensuring blocked sites remain blocked -- is that it may force Greatfire.org to spend money on bandwidth upgrades to cope with the extra traffic and ultimately succumb to the financial pressure. But for the time being the organization has no plans to go under:

Mushrooms: Great as a meal or medicine

Posted: at 3:41 pm

Medicinal mushrooms have been part of traditional medicine for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians associated mushrooms with immortality, and it was a food for kings and queens. The Chinese have promoted mushrooms for longevity and health since early research showed anticancer properties in a wild mushroom found growing in southern China.

Maitake and reishi mushrooms are best noted for their beta glucans or glycoproteins, which enhance immune function and help ward off infectious diseases from bacteria, viruses and fungi or mold. Maitake mushrooms have the highest vitamin D levels (ergosterols or vitamin D-2) of the most commonly consumed mushrooms. Shiitake and reishi are noted for liver protection, which is important for people who take medications with acetaminophen. Cordyceps have antiaging qualities and increase energy production, according to researchers in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology.

Chemotherapy patients get improved antitumor benefits from mushrooms because mushrooms increase natural killer cells or lymphocytes, cancer immunologist Dr. Kebin Liu of Georgia Health Sciences University reported in Cancer Research. Because mushrooms are easy to add to the diet and very interchangeable, even patients who are fatigued from treatment can add them using these suggestions: shiitake = meaty (great in stir-fry); morels = a smoky and woodsy flavor; and lobster = a bright reddish-orange color with neutral taste.

For the best nutrition for the money, choose the mushroom varieties mentioned above over the white button or field mushrooms found in most supermarkets. People with intestinal yeast overgrowth or yeast sensitivities might have a crossover reaction to the fungi family, so they should consume mushrooms cautiously.

Safety and quality should be the first things to consider when adding mushrooms to your diet. Mushrooms can have health risks because, as a fungus, they absorb environmental pollutants like heavy metals, pesticides and radioactivity. Eating organically grown mushrooms is the best way to be safe. Mushroom cultivation goes back centuries. When I visited a mushroom farm in China, rice chaff was used to cultivate shiitakes. Today, growers have domesticated many varieties, including portobellos.

The part of the mushroom we eat is the fruit of the fungi that lives underground as a network of microscopic filaments. Wash mushrooms just before adding them to a stir-fry, broth or salad. Many supermarkets like to wrap portobellos. Unwrap them as soon as possible to preserve freshness. My favorite way to make a quick lunch or supper is Grilled Portobello Mushroom Delight.

Why Are There Computer Chips In Tim Shanks Hands?

Posted: at 3:41 pm

The procedure is simple but look and youll cringe.

Pinched skin, plunged needle, pressed gauze and a 12-millimeter bioinert glass capsule is installed in the fleshy back of Tim Shanks hand.

Shank is a biohacker, a transhumanist, a grinder, a cyborg. The terms are jargon, hell admit, reductive and a bit cheesy, but hes earnest in his plans to hijack evolution and give his physical body a digital and mechanical upgrade.

Late last year, Shank decided it was time to take the first steps in transcending his corporeal form and turned to a St. Paul piercing artist.

Implantable, non-medical computer chips and magnets are enjoying a small vogue in the Twin Cities, and Verno Musselman, owner of The Holy Mackerel, has become Ramsey Countys premier practitioner. In the last five years, Musselman said hes completed insertions of about 10 computer chips and nearly 50 magnets.

Customers are warned about the risks of severe pain, vascular damage, nerve damage, scarring, fistulas, pulverized glass and disintegrated magnets. But Musselman, whose own wrist holds a magnet, said the operation is relatively simple and he limits the amount of trauma.

After Shanks procedure, Musselman enthusiastically posted a video on the Holy Mackerels Facebook page of the new superpower in action.

For now, as the video shows, the two subdermal chips in Shanks hands have all the functionality of a parlor magic trick. The near field communication tag, embedded between Shanks right thumb and forefinger, can be programmed to trigger a single operation on his phone, like muting a call or retrieving a contact. The RFID tag in his left hand can be set to unlock a door.

These types of body modification will not turn anyone into an omnipotent android overnight, but Shanks motivations go deeper than just the geeky cool factor.

We stopped being limited by our own biological capabilities when we first took a stone and created a tool, Shank said. I dont have any desire to be immortal or anything like that, though Id like to be healthy and vibrant for 300 years.
