Tampa dermatologist easing severe eczema and psoriasis cases with cutting edge treatment

Posted: at 12:43 pm

Tampa dermatologist Dr. Seth Forman, one of a selected few physicians to offer innovative treatments, is relieving even the most severe conditions of eczema and psoriasis

To help alleviate these harsh diseases, Dr. Forman offers the most advanced treatments and conducts ongoing clinical trials to help find the most effective remedies.

While many will just chalk it as a simple skin disease, I take eczema and psoriasis very seriously, says the Tampa dermatologist. These conditions can be debilitating for those suffering from them, not just cosmetically, but physically.

Also called atopic dermatitis, eczema is an itchy red rash that can appear all over the body according to the National Eczema Association. Approximately 30 million people, mostly children, in the United States suffer from the condition.

Psoriasis is an autoimmune disease that causes raised, red, scaly patches to appear on the skin, per the National Psoriasis Foundation. The disease often develops between the ages of 15 and 35.

Eczema and psoriasis can be unbearable for people affected with the condition, but my office has been dedicated to easing the pain, physically and emotionally for our patients, continued Dr. Forman.

With access to the newest and most effective treatments, weve been able to help the most extreme cases reduce, or show absolutely no signs of, these unsightly ailments.

The Tampa dermatologist is currently enrolling patients in clinical trials for both skin diseases. For more on Dr. Seth Forman, Tampa dermatology or Forman Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute, please visit http://www.FormanDerm.com.

About Dr. Seth Forman:Dr. Forman is a board-certified dermatologist practicing in Tampa, Florida. He was voted the Best Dermatologist in Carrollwood in 2011 and 2012 by the Carrollwood News and Tribune. In December 2011, he opened his new Tampa dermatologyoffice, Forman Dermatology and Skin Cancer Institute, where he gives psoriasis sufferers access to the latest treatment options, including topical and oral medications, as well as biological and phototherapy. Dr. Forman is one of the few Tampa dermatologists to offer narrowband light therapy, which uses pharmaceutical grade light to suppress psoriasis. Hes also one of the few board-certified dermatologists in the U.S. to use the SRT-100 radiotherapy to treat basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer.

National Psoriasis Foundation backs bill to lower treatment cost

Posted: at 12:43 pm

PORTLAND, Ore., March 26, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Americans with chronic diseases like psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis may be better able to afford vital medication to effectively manage their conditions, thanks to bipartisan legislationthe Patients' Access to Treatments Act (PATA)introduced in Congress yesterday.

The legislation, introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by Reps. David McKinley (R-WV) and Lois Capps (D-CA), aims to lower out-of-pocket costs for systemic and biologic drugs, which are used to treat chronic and disabling diseases like psoriatic disease, rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, and cancers like leukemia and lymphoma. These drugs are often placed on "specialty tiers," where a portion of the total cost of the drug is passed on to patients, called a coinsurance.

Learn more about PATA and its impact on people with psoriatic disease: http://www.psoriasis.org/pata-info.

Specialty drugs for psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis cost millions of Americans upwards of $1,500 to $5,000 per month in out-of-pocket costs. According to a 2015 study examining the economic burden of psoriasis, total direct costs of the diseasesuch as medical expenses from doctor's appointments and treatments--can cost upwards of $8,000 per person annually.

PATA will improve treatment adherence and health outcomes for chronic diseases by making medically necessary medication more accessible. In a recent National Psoriasis Foundation survey, more than 22 percent of respondents said cost was a barrier to accessing the treatments they need to manage their disease and avoid health complications.

"Psoriasis is a painful, chronic, noncontagious autoimmune disease without a cure, costing our society up to $135 billion annually. Up to 30 percent of people with psoriasis develop psoriatic arthritis," said Randy Beranek, National Psoriasis Foundation president and CEO. "Access to safe and effective treatments is the number one challenge for our community. PATA will lower out-of-pocket costs on needed medications so millions with psoriatic disease can better manage their condition."

As part of the Coalition for Accessible Treatments a partnership of 32 patient and provider organizations that created the PATA legislation the National Psoriasis Foundation fights for fair and affordable access to treatments for millions of Americans with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. These are serious, systemic autoimmune diseases with a profound physical, social, psychological and financial burden.

Psoriasis, the most common autoimmune disease in the country, increases people's risk for heart disease, heart attack, stroke and early death. Treatment with systemic and biologic drugs can reduce a person's risk for these comorbidities. Additionally, treating psoriatic arthritis early and effectively can prevent irreversible joint damage.

Scientists Spot Gene Tied to Severe Autism in Girls

Posted: at 12:43 pm

By Dennis Thompson HealthDay Reporter

WEDNESDAY, March 25, 2015 (HealthDay News) -- Researchers say they've discovered a new genetic cause of autism, singling out a rare gene mutation that appears to hamper normal brain development early on in powerful ways.

The gene, CTNND2, provides instructions for making a protein called delta-catenin, which plays crucial roles in the nervous system, said senior author Aravinda Chakravarti, a professor in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine's Institute of Genetic Medicine.

His research team found that a group of girls with severe autism carried CTNND2 mutations that appeared to reduce the effectiveness of delta-catenin, potentially affecting their neurological development.

"There are many, many proteins that in fact 'moonlight,' doing many, many different things," Chakravarti said. "Maybe the severity of the effect of delta-catenin comes from the fact that when you lose function of this protein, you lose not just one function but many functions. Although that remains to be shown, it is strongly implicated by our study."

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurological and developmental disorder that begins early in life. The cause is not known, although scientists suspect genes play a role.

The researchers discovered the CTNND2 gene's link to autism using an approach that focuses on rare and extreme cases of autism, according to the study released online March 25 in the journal Nature.

By focusing on extreme cases, they believe they will discover genes that have a more powerful effect on brain development and help explain the root causes of autism.

"If we study rare and extreme forms, they are both genetic and they represent very early neurodevelopmental events," Chakravarti said.

The researchers chose to study girls with autism because they are far less likely to have autism than boys. When girls do develop the disorder, their symptoms tend to be severe.

Movie capsules: "Get Hard," "It Follows," "Home"

Posted: at 12:42 pm

Compiled from El Paso Times staff and wire reports. Listings are subject to change.

The star rating system: Poor Fair Good Excellent

"Get Hard" (R): Kevin Hart finds himself shoehorned into a Will Ferrell buddy comedy in "Get Hard," a politically incorrect romp that only rarely romps. Ferrell is as fearless as ever, stripping down and looking foolish, willing to be out-of-touch and out of step. Hart has his manic moments. But in this buddy comedy, the buddies are not equal and that limits the laughs.

"Home" (PG): An alien on the run from his own people, lands on Earth and makes friends with the adventurous cat, Tip (Rihanna), who is on a quest of her own in this animated film. (No review)

"It Follows" (R): A few genuinely (and literally) hair-raising moments, a few knowing winks and a lot to think about lift "It Follows" above the horror pack. Sex, its consequences and a teenager actually grappling, in advance, with those consequences make this that rarest of rarities, a smart "dead teenager movie."

"Serena" (R): Bradley Cooper plays a Depression Era timber baron racing to clear cut the mountains before the Feds turn the land into the Smoky Mountains National Park. Then Serena (Jennifer Lawrence), a Westerner who grew up in timber wealth, crosses his field of view. Cooper and Lawrence get to do things on horseback, swing an axe like they've done it before and play intimate scenes that they've never had the chance to show off on screen. But,they don't create much heat.

Also in theaters

"A La Mala" (PG-13): "A la Mala" is a Mexican romantic comedy in the "How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days/Failure to Launch/40 Days and 40 Nights" mold. Change the language to English, switch the starlet to Olivia Wilde, or this year's Olivia Wilde, and you've got a rom-com as shiny, shallow and cliched as anything Hollywood has turned out over the past dozen years.

"Black or White" (PG-13): "Selma" wasn't the only film about race to get short shrift from Oscar voters this past year. "Black or White" is a frank, touching and very well-acted melodrama about child custody and cultural perceptions of "blackness" and "the race card," and could have earned Octavia Spencer and Kevin Costner fresh Oscar nominations.

"Cinderella" (PG): Director Kenneth Branagh delivers a lovely corpse of a fairytale, not helped by a blandly pretty lead (Lily James) and even blander Prince Charming (Richard Madden).
