Censorship has no place in a democracy: Adoor

Posted: March 31, 2015 at 10:42 pm

GUWAHATI: Master filmmaker and Padma Vibhushan awardee Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Monday strongly objected to censorship in the country and termed it 'redundant'.

Speaking at an interactive session with the media on Monday, the director said censorship has no validity in a democratic country.

On Sunday evening, Gopalakrishnan was conferred the second Bishwaratna Dr Bhupen Hazarika International Solidarity Award 2015. The award, an initiative of Asom Sahitya Sabha, in association with Numaligarh Refinery Limited, honours cultural and literary icons who contribute to society. The director was presented the award by chief minister Tarun Gogoi.

Gopalakrishnan denounced censor board chief Pahlaj Nihalani's recent decision to ban cuss words in films, terming the move 'ludicrous'. Nihalani had proposed to include the word 'Bombay' in the list of words to be banned.

"I am against censorship. It is a redundant practice. People should decide what to watch and what not to watch. We are a democratic society and such practices are adopted in countries like China. The list of banned cuss words being passed around by the censor board chief is simply ludicrous," he said.

Gopalakrishnan rued that creativity is increasingly being sacrificed at the altar of commercialization and profit.

The filmmaker, who is considered to be one of the finest in the world, expressed his disapproval of the excessive use of violence in some Indian films. He said Indian filmmakers often depict violence to imitate Hollywood trends.

"Parents should discourage children from watching such films. Simply imitating Hollywood is a mistake. American society is quite violent and this is reflected in their movies, but Indian society is not that violent. We still value morality and non-violence. There should be some kind of sensitization at the school-level and children should be encouraged to watch good movies," the director added.

Often credited with changing cinema in his home state of Kerala, Gopalakrishnan urged the state government to execute a clear policy of promoting quality cinema.

These Activists Are Plotting To End Internet Censorship In China

Posted: at 10:42 pm

I hope we put ourselves out of business, said Charlie Smith, the pseudonymous head of Great Fire. And he was serious. After all this Chinese Internet monitoring watchdog GreatFire.org is no ordinary case.

Started in 2011 by three anonymous individuals tired of Chinas approach to the internet, itinitiallytracked the effects of the countryscensorship system on websites. Over time, ithas risen to become perhaps the most trusted authority on the subject.

The Great Fire site itself is censorshipdatabase. Visitorsto input a URLto determine if the website isblocked inChina. It is available in English and Chinese, and periodically tests its collectionof over 100,000 URLs to produce a history of the availability/restriction for each one. A hugely useful resource in its own right, GreatFire has come to mean a lot more than just checks. These days, thethree founders document new instances of internet restrictions and foul play in China viathe organizations blog and @greatfirechina Twitter account.

Great Fire is regularlyreferenced byReuters, The Guardian, Wall Street Journal, Bloomberg and other global media including TechCrunch, of course. Stories it has dug up have included apparent attacks on Apples iCloud service, the blocking of Instagram and messaging apps, restrictionson Google services(of course) and most recentlydetails of a man-in-the-middle attack on Microsoft Outlook users in China.

Thats made the site and its founders a go-to resource for media, activists andanyone with an interest in the internet in China.

In terms ofblogging, weve amazed ourselves, said Smith. Smith highlighted the recent Microsoft attack and the role that Great Fire played publicizing it.

The story began like many others with a post on the Great Fire blog. That was picked up by media which gave the finding aglobal platform and attention.Microsoft entered the scene when itconfirmed that a small number of customers [were] impacted by malicious routing to a server impersonating Outlook.com and suddenly what was initially a small discovery had become a topic in media across the world, China included.

It got me thinking, if wewerent around who wouldve exposed that? Its a serious thing, Smith said.

Great Fire is an invaluable resource for Asia-based tech reporters, but blogging and retroactively documented censorship isnt going to down theGreat Firewall, as Chinas internet censorship organ is known. For that, Smith and his fellow vigilantes have a more sophisticated plan of action that they call Collateral Freedom. Its a concept that leverages cloud-based content networks to give blocked websites and services a new, unblocked lease of life in China.

Why Parks and Recreations Ron Swanson and Leslie Knope could agree on Indianas religious freedom law

Posted: at 10:42 pm

By Russell Moore March 31 at 7:29 PM

In all the furor over Indianas controversial Religious Freedom Restoration Act, perhaps the answer to the culture war impasse wont be found in Indianapolis but in Pawnee. Pawnee, of course, is the fictional town inhabited by long-running NBC sitcom Parks and Recreation, which orbited around the often clashing visions of Parks director Ron Swanson and his crusading deputy Leslie Knope. The two could agree on little, but I think they could agree on Indianas RFRA as it originally passed, and so should we.

Ron Swanson and Leslie Knope are relevant to this discussion not despite the fact that they are fictional Hoosiers but precisely because they are. They stand in for two powerful impulses in American cultural and political life: leave me alone libertarianism and common good progressivism. Both of these strains are part of the rich heritage of religious freedom, and neither strain should go wobbly on that heritage now.

Swanson, of course, was the grumpy, just-this-side-of-cynical libertarian who feels guilty for working for the government. What he wanted to see done, more than anything, within his tiny towns parks department is for it to do just this side of nothing. He kept his money in gold, buried somewhere in the yard. His hatred of government regulations and government expenditures, of almost any kind, were second only to his hatred for skim milk (which he famously called water, lying about being milk).

Swanson, like most libertarians, probably would support same-sex marriage, if he supported any sort of government-recognized marriage at all. But his libertarianism wouldnt want the government dictating either the prohibitionor the celebrationof such unions.

The libertarian vision is one that recognizes that pluralism in the public square is not an evil to be stamped out by government fiat. And that vision is especially true when it comes to the most personal arena of a persons life: his or her conscience. We may disagree on how much government is necessary, but libertarians have consistently warned us that a government that takes upon itself the burden of paving over consciences is a government that can do anything.

The libertarian vision is true in the area of religious liberty both on the Right (when some have wanted state-written school prayers or mosques zoned out of existence) or on the Left (where now many want to force celibate nuns to pay for birth control insurance or force evangelical adoption agencies out of existence).

The federal RFRA and its counterparts in the states were designed to protect individual consciences from a Leviathan government. The point of RFRA, from the beginning, was to assert that unpopular religious views (whether of peyote-smoking native Americans, hijab-wearing Muslims or something similar) ought to be protected by more than just the whim of the majority.

Leslie Knope, on the other hand, was the office progressive, fueled by idealism about what government can do, if only given the chance. With her office filled with pictures of her women heroes from Madeleine Albright to Hillary Clinton, Knope wanted to break glass ceilings, to fill in sand pits and build parks for the sake of the flourishing of her community.

Now, as a liberal Democrat, Knope, too, probably would support same-sex marriage. But its hard to imagine that Knope would feel comfortable with the hysteria weve seen over the Indiana RFRA. The primary pressure to abandon this act, along with the (flat-out misrepresented) line that it is a freedom to discriminate bill has come from big corporate interests threatening to boycott the state.
