Why Christians Should Embrace Transhumanism

Posted: at 2:43 pm

May 31, 2015|10:45 pm

Transhumanism, by definition, is a worldwide cultural and intellectual endeavor that has the end objective of transforming humanity by developing and extensively providing technologies that significantly enhance the intellectual, physical and psychological capacities of human beings. During much of the transhumanist movement, advocates of Christianity have rightly opposed supporters of transhumanism because of ideological differences. But the time has come for Christians to embrace transhumanism.

Much of the distress about transhumanism by Christians in the past surrounds its proponent's vocal Atheistic attempts to define the prefix "trans" in ways that advocate individual enhancement through technological means to become "post" human. Many of these perspectives tend to lend themselves to the narcissistic hubris associated with Nietzschean self-actualization that forsakes the needs of the whole of humanity in exchange for self-glorification and exclusive personal gain. Anyone, with even the slightest sensitivity to past events in world history, can appreciate why those who advocate peace and justice would not want to support such behavior. It is understandable then, why Christians have appropriately reacted with caution and concern.

And while certainly such trepidations are not without legitimacy, there is larger concern that should be considered. Mainly that, by not embracing transhumanism, Christianity may be "throwing out the baby with the bathwater." That is because the aforementioned interpretation of transhumanism is not the only or legitimate understanding of what the movement is or could be in the future.

For instance, a more nuanced meaning of the prefix "trans" is one that implies traversing "across" the scope of what it might mean to be human. Such an understanding does not signify a forfeiture of our humanity but a collective bettering of it. This view of transhumanism thus empowers Christians to advocate for the development and utilization of technology for the intentional goal of participating in Christ's redemptive purposes for humanity and all of creation. In doing so, we may then be able to continue to technologically enhance humanity in ways that honor God, helping us to more fully flourish as human beings made in God's Image.

Moreover, as we are living in the highest point of technological development in human history, followers of Christ have a moral responsibility, as good stewards, to help guide the direction of this exponential technological growth for the betterment of humanity and the world. It has always been the goal of Christians to care for and heal the sick, give sight to the blind, help deaf to hear, the lame to walk, give voice to the mute and guide persons toward holistic betterment in community. Disease (Cancer, AIDS, Ebola, Alzheimer's, Malaria etc.) and death are humanity's enemies and, in and through Christ, using the technological gifts that we have been given, Christians should continue to work diligently to better humanity by overcoming them. Transhumanism shares all of these technological goals, and as such, Christians should embrace it.

But Christians should also not be nave in this pursuit either, because for most post-human transhumanists the ideological battle for intellectual ownership of transhumanism is presently occurring. And those who want it for their exclusive gain are seeking to discredit Christian theology's practical value to humanity hoping that, by doing so, they can actualize their personal goals by minimizing Christian concern for the corpus of humanity in need.

Fortunately, Christians have a numerical advantage against such adversarial factions in most places in the world. Which means that the only thing truly delaying the development and utilization of technology for Christ's redemptive purposes is Christians' failure to advocate for such goals. As such, it is time for Christians to embrace a proper understanding of transhumanism, and in so doing, to actively help to bring to fruition, though Jesus, the redemption and betterment of humanity and the world.

Where is the International Space Station?

The International Space Station with ESAs Columbus laboratory flies 400 km high at speeds that defy gravity literally. At 28 800 km/h it only takes 90 minutes for the weightless laboratory to make a complete circuit of Earth. Astronauts working and living on the Station experience 16 sunrises and sunsets each day.

The tracker above, developed by ESA, shows where the Space Station is right now and its path 90 minutes ago and 90 minutes ahead. Due to Earth's rotation the Station seems to travel from west to east over our planet. Below the map of Earth you can see where the Station is flying directly above. You can see the International Space Station with your own eyes from here by looking up at the right time.

Below is a live view of Earth taken by a camera on the International Space Station, a view similar to that astronauts get from above. Without Earths atmosphere to protect us, people and equipment endure the full barrage of cosmic rays and solar radiation. The images are part of the NASA HDEV experiment that is looking at how fast these harmful rays degrade the image through camera and equipment damage. Sometimes the image is black because the Space Station does not have continuous radio contact with ground control. In that case, check back later.

Walkthrough written by Cool Bite andSlanted Fish Pictures by PopBuddies &Stealth Komodo

The first step is to arrive on Lunar Colony Island via the blimp.Run all the way to the right and go to Mission Control. Enter the Poptropica Academy for Space Exploration building (PASE a parody of NASA). Talk to the old guy. Then a flight director will come in and ask you to find something for the astronauts stomach.

Exit the building and go back left to where you came from (Cape Carpenter on the Map). The astronauts table now only has a lone bottle of Ginger Ale for you to take.

Now go back right to Mission Control and head straight to the elevator. Push the down button and the elevator will quickly arrive in front of you. Hop on and push the up button and up, up, up you go to the spaceship.

Theres a sick astronaut in the spaceship. Give him the Ginger Ale, and hell feel better. He leaves the ship and locks you in. Pick up the mic on the right and flight director will talk to you. You dont know how to fly a spaceship, but dont worry, hell give you instructions. Sit tight cause this is gonna be a bumpy ride!

You first have to adjust the booster rockets. Set each to 4,150 pounds of thrust.Fuel tank 1 running low. When it reaches 5%, activate fuel tank 2 and release fuel tank 1.

Fields of Study and Research

Many general areas of research are available in the Human Genetics program:

Approximately 10 - 12 new students are admitted to the program each year. Our students interact with trainees in several other programs at Hopkins including postdoctoral fellows in Human Genetics, as well as predoctoral students in many of the other graduate programs on the School of Medicine campus including Biochemistry, Cellular and Molecular Biology (BCMB); Neuroscience; Immunology; and Cellular and Molecular Medicine (CMM).

Below are listed the courses required of all students in the program. These includes a human biology core that has been adapted from the basic medical school curriculum. The first course that incoming students will take is Genetics & Medicine: History of Ideas. In this seminar course, students revisit articles that have been the cornerstome of the evolution in the field and discuss the historical and scientific context in which such discoveries were made.

Further on, our students are required to take courses that are part of the core curriculum for BCMB and other programs on campus, where they will acquire an extensive knowledge of molecular biology, genetics of model systems, and human genetics. The introductory course in Human Genetics and three advanced genetics seminars are required, as well as basic graduate courses in Molecular Biology, Fundamentals of Genetics, Biochemistry and Cell Biology. We believe that the time spent in formal course work, although significant in the first year and a half of the program, provides our students with an excellent, broad-based foundation for careers in biomedical research.

Listed in blue boxes are those courses that are shared with other Graduate Programs in the School of Medicine. Those courses listed in a red box are specific for Human Genetics Students.

Electives available include existing courses in human biology as well as those in genetics and molecular biology. In addition, there are many other courses available in the Schools of Medicine, School of Public Health and at Homewood which may be appropriate for individualized programs. These include courses in Bioinformatics, Advanced Biostatistics and many other subject-related topics.

Research training begins soon after the student enters the program. The rotation electives are selected by the student according to his/her interests. A series of informal luncheon meetings with the faculty as well as the Human Genetics Student/Faculty retreat, held in September each year, provides the student with an opportunity to become acquainted with the research activities of each of the preceptors.

UCLA Human Genetics

Posted: at 2:42 pm

The Department of Human Genetics is the youngest basic science department in the Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. When the Department was launched just prior to the sequencing of the human genome, it was clear that the practice of genetics research would be forever changed by the infusion of massive amounts of new data. Organizing and making sense of this genomic data is one of the greatest scientific challenges ever faced by mankind. The knowledge generated will ultimately transform medicine through patient-specific treatments and prevention strategies.

The Department is dedicated to turning the mountains of raw genetic data into a detailed understanding of the molecular pathogenesis of human disease. The key to such understanding is the realization that genes not only code for specific proteins, but they also control the temporal development and maturation of every living organism through a complex web of interactions.

Housed in the new Gonda Research Center, the Department serves as a focal point for genetics research on the UCLA campus, with state of the art facilities for gene expression, sequencing, genotyping, and bioinformatics. In addition to its research mission, the Department offers many exciting training opportunities for graduate students, postdoctoral fellows, and medical residents. Our faculty and staff welcome inquiries from prospective students. We also hope that a quick look at our web pages will give you a better idea of the Department's research and educational activities.

Eczema | University of Maryland Medical Center

Posted: at 2:42 pm

Introduction

Eczema is a chronic, inflammatory skin disorder. It can appear as blisters that crust over to become scaly, itchy rashes, or as dry, thick patches of skin with scales. The main symptom is itching, and symptoms can come and go. Although eczema is not contagious, it is very common. People with eczema often have a personal or family history of allergies. There is no cure, however, treatments can reduce symptoms and help prevent outbreaks.

The most common signs of eczema are:

Eczema in children under 2 years old generally starts on the cheeks, elbows, or knees. In adults, it tends to be found on the inside surfaces of the knees and elbows.

Researchers do notknow for sure what causes eczema. It may be a combination of hereditary (genetic) and environmental factors. In some people, allergies may trigger eczema. Exposure to certain irritants and allergens can make symptoms worse, as can dry skin, exposure to water, temperature changes, and stress.

Stress can make eczema worse. Other irritants that can make eczema worse include:

Wool or synthetic fibers

Certain soaps and detergents, as well as perfumes and some cosmetics

Dust or sand

Cigarette smoke

Treatment of Vaginal Eczema – Dermatology – MedHelp

Posted: at 2:42 pm

Due to no health insurance, I am self-diagnosed with vaginal eczema. I have had eczema all over my body since the day I was born, but as I aged the symptoms lessened to the point that I rarely ever have any spots--except on my vaginal area, which has been tormenting me for about 20 years now.

About 15 years ago, my mother mentioned to me that a lot of people with eczema have allergy to aloe.I experimented with aloe & found out that FOR SURE I was one of them aloe-intolerant people. And it doesn't surprise me that I only had vaginal irritation for the last TWO decades, & not my whole life (I am now 40) because it's been only within the last 20 years that aloe has become a staple in almost EVERY beauty product.

I am sharing this with you all--a bit late, but hopefully someone who is browsing the web for a solution to the same problem can benefit from this.

Now I want to list some of the items that aloe is in, as I myself was amazed at my finding while trying to weed out aloe in my hygiene: Some bathroom tissue--toilet paper--has aloe.It may not say it on the package, but I recommend calling the customer service hotline to make sure yours doesn't.It's added to give the tissue softness. Almost every triple-blade & quadruple blade razor. It's in the moisture strip.Dollar Shave Club has a triple blade that doesn't have aloe.I only use their blades now. Hair gel, styling mouse, lotion, shampoo, conditioner, soap. Some girdles--believe it or not, some girdle makers CLAIM the aloe helps you lose fat while wearing it. Condoms--yes, some condoms even use aloe in the lubricants. Baby wipes. Shaving gel. I'll tell you the pain I've had for the last 11 years trying to get my partner to quit using his Aveeno aloe & flaxseed hair gel & to quit using them Bic blades with aloe.It has made my sex life absolute HADES b/c with all the aloe he was using on his body was causing severe irritation on my labia. He's finally weeded out the aloe, but only because *I* went out & bought him all theshaving supplies, hair supplies & paid for the monthly order from Dollar Shave Club. I'm telling you, you will come across 3 types of partners: 1. Those who don't care 2.Those who think you're making more out of it than what it is. 3.Those who think you're lying about the problem.

You have to stand alone on this & do what you can to promote your own sexual health--because apparently no one else will care.

Also, I want to say that the only thing that's helped me is Lysine Plus cream--meant for the lips on the face, not the vaginal ones--from Quantum Inc.Just dab lightly with it, it's way too expensive to apply liberally.

How to Treat Nail Eczema (6 Steps) | eHow

Posted: at 2:42 pm

Eczema is a type of atopic dermatitis that results in red, irritated skin that may ooze and crust over causing the skin to appear scaly, according to the Australasian College of Dermatologists. Eczema of the fingernails occurs under and around the nail beds and occurs when the skin becomes irritated or is exposed to chronic moisture, such as when a child repeatedly sucks his thumb. There are several ways to treat nail eczema to clear up the unwanted redness and irritation.

Moisturizing lotion

Cold compress

Avoid over-exposure to water. This means staying out of the pool for extended periods of time and wearing rubber gloves when cleaning and doing the dishes. This will cut down on the dryness that will make nail eczema worse.

Apply moisturizing lotion to the nail beds at least once a day. This will keep the skin supple and can be used to treat eczema all over your body to help seal in moisture.

Identify what triggers your eczema and attempt to avoid it. According to Mayo Clinic.com, common eczema triggers include stress, contact with certain household cleaners, sweating and harsh soaps and perfumes.

Place a cold compress on the affected finger or toe nails when a flare-up is occurring. This could include a bag of peas wrapped in a hand towel or an ice pack. This will relieve the irritation, redness and swelling that is associated with eczema.

Cover the nails with a one percent hydrocortisone cream. This will help relieve any itching that might accompany eczema.

Speak to your doctor about any medications that will help treat the symptoms of nail eczema. These include immunomodulators that, according to the Mayo Clinic, will lessen the effects the immune system has on eczema. Another medication that may be prescribed is prednisone, which is a steroid that will reduce the inflammation of eczema.

Eczema and psoriasis are often mistaken for each other because they tend to share similar symptoms. ... Nail changes do occur with...

What is Dyshidrotic Eczema?

This is a skin problem which is also known as dyshidrosis, or pompholyx. This skin condition creates fluid-filled, small blisters or vesicles on the soles of the feet or palms of the hands or both.

These blisters occurring in dyshidrotic eczema normally last around 3 weeks and causes extreme itching. When these blisters dry, cracks and groves or fissures develop, which are very painful.

Management for dyshidrotic eczema most often requires topical creams, ultraviolet light or wet compresses to improve the appearance as well as ease symptoms.

The cause of dyshidrotic eczema is not known. But, it can be linked with a similar disorder of the skin known as atopic dermatitis as well as allergic conditions, for instance asthma and hay fever known as allergic rhinitis. Eruptions can be seasonal in individuals with allergies.

With dyshidrotic eczema, the affected areas of the skin come to be inflamed. Because of this, the connections between the cells of the skin open and this allows fluid or serum to seal these spaces. Physicians denote this development as spongiosis since when viewed under microscope; the skin appears sponge-like with these numerous fluid-filled spaces.

Signs or symptoms of dyshidrotic eczema include:

Risk aspects for dyshidrotic eczema include:

Females seem to have this condition more than men

Appear to be more frequent during stressful times
