Politically Incorrect Hero – TV Tropes
Posted: March 2, 2017 at 1:50 pm
"Yes, Wong very racist. Don't like black or Jew. But black and Jew both like Chinese food. Go figure." Usually, in modern stories, a character who's a sexist, racist, or something else of that kind is the bad guy. This is mostly due to the present day realization that prejudice is bad. Sometimes, either due to an Writer on Board, Values Dissonance, Deliberate Values Dissonance, or something else, a character can get away with opinions that are... controversial. If the excuse is well-done, it can work. If not, it seems like a Karma Houdini. Unless, of course, he is punished for it, or forced to undergo a FaceHeel Turn. It has become increasingly common for heroes of this type to not only have their political incorrectness lampshaded by the author and by other characters, but to be aware of it themselves. This type of "hero" knows his attitudes are wrong but is too proud to give them up, usually due to Honor Before Reason. He might develop into a Noble Bigot or Troubled Sympathetic Bigot. The trope has become increasingly discredited given modern social attitudes regarding discrimination, and in contrast the use of politically-incorrect characters as the bad guys is now the rule. Lindsay Ellis refers to this trope as the "lovable misogynist" in an article dissecting the motives given in the above paragraph. Also see Good Flaws, Bad Flaws for a more thorough analysis of "discrimination as a flaw".

Censorship weaponized against anti-globalist wave – WND.com

Marine Le Pen
A presidential candidate in France who is riding the wave of anti-globalist populism that helped fuelBrexit and Donald Trumps victory is facing prosecution for tweeting graphic images of ISIS executions.
On Tuesday, the European Union took one step toward allowing the prosecution of Marine Le Pen as the legal affairs committee of the European Parliament voted 18-3 to lift her immunity as a member of parliament, Reuters reported.
Le Pen is under investigation in France for posting three images of ISIS executions on Twitter in 2015.
The images included the beheading of American journalist James Foley.
A Paris prosecutor is examining whether or not the photos violate a law against distribution of violent images.
Le Pen reacted to the EU decision Tuesday.
This only shows French citizens what the EU is, what the European Parliament is and that its all part of the system that wants to stop the French peoples candidate that I am, she said, according to Agence France-Presse
Le Pen, who is leading a tight, three-way race to succeed Francois Hollande, is president of the National Front Party, which opposes French membership in the EU and the mass immigration of people from mostly Islamic countries who largely are not assimilating into French society.
Le Pen tweeted the graphic photographs of ISIS killings in December 2015 in response to a journalist who compared her party to ISIS, which is also known by the Arabic acronym Daesh.
Daesh is THIS! she wrote, along with the photos.
Her tweet drew strong criticism from the victims families and French politicians across the political spectrum.
Le Pens immunity also was lifted in 2013, leading to prosecution of her in 2015 for incitement to discrimination over peoples religious belief because she compared Muslims praying in public to the Nazi occupation of France during World War II. The charges eventually were dropped.
Major terrorist attacks over the past two years by members of the Muslim immigrant community in France, attributed to ISIS, have bolstered the National Fronts popularity.
Le Pen is regarded as more democratic and republican than her nationalist father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, and has sought to soften her partys image, expelling members accused of racism and anti-Semitism, including her father.
How political correctness handcuffs Americas Homeland Security officers is the story former counter-terrorism agentPhilip Haney tells in See Something Say Nothing. Its available now at the WND Superstore!
Nigel Farage, the former UKIP leader who was the face of the successful referendum last yearin Britain to exit the EU, known as Brexit, said in an interview in December he believes that if Le Pen were to win, France would hold its own referendum on leaving the EU, a Frexit.
He summed up his opinion of Le Pen, describing her as very socialist on economic issues but a defender of French sovereignty.
Oh yes, she is (controversial). I mean look, let me absolutely clear about this. Ive never said a bad word about Marine Le-Pen, Ive never said a good word about her party.
That is my position on this. I think she has tried to make things better within the front national. Shes got rid of people who held genuinely extreme positions. I dont agree with her economic analysis at all or her view on trade or many other things.
Its completely different but she does believe in the sovereignty of France.
Incitement to discrimination
Le Pen is not the only member of the European Parliament to be punished for her speech.
Last month, after the parliament refused immunity, UKIPs Jane Collins was ordered by the high court in London to pay 335,000 pounds in damages and court costs for alleging three British members of Parliament had failed to speak out about child abuse carried out by British-Pakistani men in Rotherham, England.
Collinscharged the MPs were guilty of grave misconduct because they kept silent due to political correctness and cowardice.
A report commissioned by the British government supported her claim. It found that failures of political and police leadership contributed to the sexual exploitation of 1,400 children in Rotherham over a 16-year period.
Naming the horror of Islam
The vote Tuesday to lift Le Pens immunity was in response to a request by the French judiciary. The full European Parliament must back the decision. A vote is expected this week, Reuters said.
Prosecutors are considering a charge of publishing violent images, which can carry a penalty of three years in prison and a fine of 75,000 euros, about $79,000.
Reacting to the vote, National Front Vice President Florian Philipott argued: Showing and naming the horror of Islamism allow us to fight against it.
Polls show Le Pen winning the first two rounds of the French presidential election but losing in the runoff.
DHS agent Philip Haneys blockbuster revelations of the federal governments appeasement of supremacist Islam are told in his first-person account, See Something Say Nothing

We can’t just blame the Left for student censorship every side is at it now – Telegraph.co.uk
Posted: at 1:50 pm
Well, not quite. The assumption that students share the political views of their officers forgets that SUs and their overlord - the NUS - are entirely unrepresentative of the people they claim to represent. In UCLs union elections last year, only 12% of the study body bothered to vote. In 2015 at the University of Manchester, turnout reached a national record of around 25%. Hardly a resounding victory for democracy.
Indeed, contrary to the claim that students spend their time printing off topless calendars of Jeremy Corbyn, research carried out by the Universities of Southampton and Sheffield revealed that todays young people are more right-wing and authoritarian than any generation in recent history.
And even if students did support their student unions, the increasingly warped regard for genuine left-wing politics by union officers makes it hard to label their cause as truly left-wing. In an attempt to demonstrate their leftie credentials, working class officers have been created at Manchester, Soas, King's College London, and St Hildas, Oxford to ensure working class students dont feel marginalised.
This demonstrates just how far todays student Left has wandered from the barricades manned by its predecessors. Back in Paris in 1968, student activists took to the streets in a genuine attempt to overthrow capitalism. Todays self-labelled lefties are more concerned with fighting for Meat Free Mondays. Rather than uphold the power of the proletariat, student union officers view their working class peers as vulnerable creatures who need protecting. Marxs claim that workingmen have nothing to lose but their chains no longer resonates. Todays campus warriors just want to make the chains are a bit more comfortable.

War on Comments: Google Built an AI To Censor The Web, And The Media Is Celebrating – Breitbart News

Thats the lowkey Orwellian message that greets visitors to the website of Perspective, Googles new AI system for detecting (and potentially deleting, hiding, or burying) toxic comments on the web.
SIGN UP FOR OUR NEWSLETTER
Perspective is still in early days of development, but in the future, you may have to adjust your speech in order to satisfy the lofty standards of Google. Otherwise, the companys faceless AI might just have to improve you. Wheres Sarah Connor when you need her?
The good news is that, for now at least, Perspective is about as effective as C-3PO with a lisp. Software engineer and columnist David Auerbach has found the program woefully inept at sorting toxic comments from ordinary ones. Because the AI currently focuses on words rather than meanings, inoffensive comments like, Rape is a horrible crime, or, few Muslims are a terrorist threat, were assigned toxicity ratings of over 75 percent.
Of course, even if Perspective could successfully sort toxic comments from innocuous ones, that doesnt necessarily mean theyre going to be deleted or buried. According to the projects homepage, the systemperforms no function other than detection.
But statements from the projects developers make it clear that censorship is the end goal. Indeed, the system seems to have been developed to augment the lefts ongoing war on comments sections. The software was initially made available just to organizations that are part of Googles Digital News Initiative, including the BBC, The Financial Times, andThe Guardian, whichpromptly began testing the software to moderate their comments sections.
News organizations want to encourage engagement and discussion around their content, but find that sorting through millions of comments to find those that are trolling or abusive takes a lot of money, labour and time, says Jared Cohen, president of Jigsaw, the Google social incubator that built the tool. As a result, many sites have shut down comments altogether. But they tell us that isnt the solution they want.
Google couldnt be clearer: its a censorship bot. And just because its currently limited to news sites and comments sections doesnt mean it wont be rolled out to social networks and the rest of the web. Twitter, which just introduced yet another system to punish users whohurt celebrities feelings, would probably love to get their hands on a working version of Perspective.
Twitter already has a tremendous depth of data on its users, including gender, location, and personal interests. Imagine that data, combined with an AI tool designed to pinpoint inconvenient content, in the hands of a CEO who has done little to conceal his political biases.
The idea of an all-powerful Google robot watching over us all, making sure our speech is improved, has greatly excited mainstream media. Google, says the BBC, is going to make talk less toxic. According to WIRED, Perspective will put a stop to abusive comments that silence vulnerable voices. New York magazine portrays Perspsective as a friendly a robot, a kind of Clippy for the comments section. Our robot overlords are certainly getting a warm welcome
The left are likely to be disappointed though. If Auerbachs early research on Perspective is any guide, the system is designed to filter out impoliteness, not political disagreement. Googles censorbot might turn the comments section and perhaps the web into a grey, sanitized dystopia scrubbed of strong emotions and trollish humor, but it wont get rid of facts.
In other words, myths about gender wage gaps, police racism, and moderate Islam are still going to get debunked. Even Skynet cant keep some things quiet.

Left’s demands for National Gallery to ban Prof Peterson cross dangerous censorship line – The Rebel
Posted: at 1:50 pm
Another day, another leftist attempt at censorship. The target is, once again, University of Toronto professor and psychologist Jordan Peterson.
It should come as no surprise given the myriad prior attempts by left-wing activists to prevent Peterson from speaking about gender pronouns or free speech itself. But this time, theyre trying to stop him from giving a lecture about the psychology of creativity, his actual field of research.
Peterson is recognized internationally on the subject, hence the invitation by the National Gallery of Canada on March 9.
Cara Tierney, a former gallery employee who demands people refer to her as they, said to CBC, Peterson shouldnt be allowed to speak on his research because of his views on gender.
If there was a known anti-Semite who also perhaps had something interesting to say about psychology or creativity, I dont imagine that we would be inviting this individual to come and talk, Tierney said.
Another Ottawa activist said that Peterson threatens the reality that art itself has always been, historically, a safe space.
The comment is laughably tone deaf, given that art has always been the bastion of controversyartists just want that controversy on their terms, rather than anyone elses.
No one who has attempted to block Peterson from speaking at the gallery has disputed his credentials, nor his message. This is why the censorship efforts are so chilling: because he disagrees with them on something else, he shouldnt be entitled to speak about anything, in their view.
The goal is nothing short of 100 per cent conformity, lest you find yourself on the receiving end of boycotts.
The National Gallery is a public institution, which means cancelling this event would be an effort by government to block certain viewpoints. So far, theyre holding the line.
Lets hope it stays that way.

Changing the Way We Talk About Libertarianism – Reason
Posted: at 1:49 pm
"Are we a chosen marginalized group that is going to be forever hanging around together? Is this just our social gang?," asks Jeffrey Tucker, director of content for the Foundation of Economic Education (FEE). "I think that is a problem."
When FEE was first founded in 1946 by Leonard Read, libertarianism was a little known concept. Thanks to regularly featured works by noted scholars like Ludwig von Mises, Milton Friedman, Henry Hazlitt, and George Stigler, the ideas of human liberty and freedom became more accessible and familiar to a larger audience.
The growing distaste for the current two-party system (both major party candidates set historic records for negative ratings in 2016) has increased the appeal of the libertarian perspective and the ideology has grown into a movement with real political momentum. Gallup Poll's 2015 Politcal Governance survey found that 27 percent of respondents could be ideologically classified as libertarianthe highest number recorded to date.
But Tucker warns that the growing popularity of libertarianism presents new challenges: "Because we have become a movement... it does give rise toI thinkcertain temptations to speak in our own vernacular or our own really high liturgical language with each other. Then normal people can't understand."
Tucker states he has looked to the past as inspiration for revitalizing FEE's current mission.
"There weren't a lot of what we call libertarians around at the time," Tucker explains. "They had to speak in a way to everybody or to anyone who would listen. And I think that affected the way they thought and the way they wrote. Every piece had to make sense for anybody who happened to pick it up."
To reach a larger audience, Tucker has expanded FEE's editorial scope by including entertainment reviews of popular shows like HBO's The Young Pope and Netflix's The Crown in addition to policy and political coverage.
Reason's Nick Gillespie sat down with Tucker at the International Students for Liberty Conference to discuss the history of FEE and how popular culture can be used by libertarians to spread their ideas to a mainstream audience.

Review: ‘Logan’ a satisfying end for Jackman’s Wolverine – Medicine Hat News
Posted: at 1:49 pm
By Sandy Cohen, The Associated Press on March 1, 2017.
Logan is not for the faint of heart not just because of its brutal violence, but because it packs an emotional wallop you dont typically expect from a comic-book movie.
Featuring Hugh Jackmans final turn as Wolverine, Logan isnt a shiny, colorful, superhero-style film, either. Its gritty, dark, and a deeply satisfying conclusion for fans whove followed the clawed character through Jackmans past eight movie outings with the X-Men and alone as Wolverine.
Writer-director James Mangold, who also directed 2013s The Wolverine, clearly loves the character as much as Jackman does, and both seem liberated by this films R rating. Logan is not a kids movie. Its viscerally violent lots of claws-through-the-face shots and emotionally profound as it explores the relationship between Logan and Professor X (Patrick Stewart).
Viewers would need some basic familiarity with these characters to fully appreciate the story told in Logan. If you dont know anything about the relationship between the title mutant and Charles Xavier (Stewart), the arc they experience in this film would be far less impactful.
(The quick version: Professor X is the de-facto leader of mutants, who most appreciates them and their powers. Logan has resented the immortality that comes with his mutant-ness, and has a lot softer heart than his claws would indicate.)
Its the near future, and Logan is a hard-drinking limo-driver for hire. As one of the few remaining mutants, he keeps a low profile while caring for an aging and ill Professor X, whos hidden in a secret silo just south of the Mexican border. Half the time he babbles nonsense, but the professor tells him theres a young mutant coming their way, and soon theyre charged with Laura, a little girl who doesnt speak but has deadly claws like Wolverine.
A slick-looking villain with a Terminator hand (a perfectly smarmy Boyd Holbrook) is interested in this young mutant as well. She was part of a pseudo-military genetic research project led by the evil Dr. Rice (Richard E. Grant, even smarmier).
Laura (entrancing newcomer Dafne Keen) is planning to meet the other kids Dr. Rice experimented on in Eden, a place they read about in an X-Men comic book. So meta.
Thus the story becomes a road movie, with Logan, Laura and Xavier comprising an endearing and offbeat family on their way to Eden as they try to outrun Dr. Rice and his goons. Logan is reluctant and disinterested, Xavier is kind and a little kooky, and Laura is mute.
Laura is also a killer badass, and Keen makes her so fun to watch. Imagine Wolverines powers in a pint-sized, ponytailed package. Between the 11-year-olds performance and flawless special effects, Keens fight scenes are as thrilling and bloodletting as any of Wolverines.
And Jackman doubly delivers as Wolverine. Youll see what I mean when you watch the film. He is in top form as both an action star and an actor, bringing heart to his dramatic scenes and wielding unmatched admantium power in the action sequences.
Beyond the claws, theres also some cutting-edge car play, including a throw-down between a limo, two motorcycles and a barbed-wire fence. Mangold also manages to work in an anti-GMO message about a Monsanto-like company and pay tribute to classic cinema with a nod to the 1953 Western, Shane.
Logan is a family drama, an action thriller and an epic superhero story. If this is indeed Jackmans last Wolverine film, hes going out in heartfelt, high-class style.
Logan, a 20th Century Fox release, is rated R for strong brutal violence and language throughout, and for brief nudity. Running time: 141 minutes. Three and a half stars out of four.

Michael O’Connor : Does He See Himself being a Transhumanist? – Mobile Magazine
Posted: at 1:48 pm
The writer of the non-fiction book about the world of trans humanists who wants to go beyond the limits of the human body using technology entitled To Be a Machine Michael OConnell went to the creepiest place he has ever been to is the Alcor Life Extension Foundation. The place where nitrogen filled tanks with dead bodies is preserved, in case that using a future technology they can be revived. But first, let me tell you what transhumanists are. Transhumanists ought to exist since the 80s however they have come to be more noticeable in the past years as technology progresses and made our imagination seem more realistic. They are people who want to use technology to go beyond the limits of a human body. They want to be stronger and faster in other words they want to be a cyborg.
They want to be literally machines. It is a contrasting movement with what they really want and what they believe. Nowadays, each one of us is showing different faades but the thing happening is the literal marriage of technology and man. It is a very common feeling to be upset with what our bodies cannot do by having limitations of being a human, by not being able to strong as Captain America, by not being as fast the The Flash, by not being be able to go to the outer space These are all obsessions with human limitations but will you rather embed integrated microchip technology beneath your skin to be able to do this stuffs? It sure comes out to be a privilege than a problem. What do you think are the goals of a transhumanist? For him, it is as simple as they do not want to die. They want to be so powerful physically and intellectually and that they want to use technology for them to get what they want because they believe that it is achievable by using technology. Everything seemed to satisfy basic demands of rationalism, and yet the end result was always completely insane. Michael quoted.
Video Courtesy of Youtube:
They want to be significantly different that they can do whatever they want to do and not just die. But actually, they already died with their soul. Michael OConnel does not consider himself as a Transhumanist. He was not persuaded by their philosophy at all. When said that when talking to a transhumanist, they all want to be basically gods the idea of being so powerful and ubiquitous to just knowing everything is quite vague. They said that they got Stockholm syndrome of the human body (a condition of the body that causes captives to cultivate a mental coalition with their abductors as a survival strategy during confinement) he was not appealed to this either. He does not like the idea of it being like a super human. We do not know what the future technology would bring us but hopefully will not do any harm to any normal human being because there a lot of individuals who would certainly not appeal themselves a transhumanist but has an indication about the potentials of the human future.

The Human Spirit: Of pennies and anemones – Jerusalem Post Israel News

The road to Moshav Yishi near Beit Shemesh runs through hillocks dotted with red anemones kalaniyot theyre called in Hebrew. The countrys voted most beloved wildflower is immortalized in the song Kalaniyot (words by Natan Alterman, music Moshe Wilensky) recorded in 1948 by the grande dame of Israel song, Shoshana Damari. Mostly, she sang it for our soldiers fighting for Israels independence.
The roadside is lined with cars, as busy Israeli families are making time on this balmy winter Friday afternoon to glory in homeland flowers.
In the song, a young girl brings her mother a basket of anemones, a practice long since prohibited in Israel. In a later stanza, the grown-up girl is walking amid the anemones with her beloved.
Ive driven to Moshav Yishi to meet parents whose children will never grow up. Theyve been murdered by terrorists.
The parents have been invited for a therapeutic, restful Shabbat by Deena and Rabbi Menachem Mendlowitz, who built a rustic guest house, with the dream that it would serve as a place for healing.
The women know one another well theyve been taking part in a support group for years, although no one can say exactly how many. Theyre gregarious, delighted to see one another, and ebullient over finding posh lodgings instead of ramshackle huts in this not-yet-gentrified farming region. The men are more somber. Some but not all of the men know one another.
The support group has come together under the sponsorship of the Koby Mandell Foundation. Koby Mandells parents, Sherri and Seth, are here, too.
On a spring day in 2001, Koby and his pal Yosef Ish Ran set out on a Tom Sawyer-ish hike. Terrorists found the 13-year-old children in a cave and stoned them to death. In their sons memory, Sherri and Seth have created a multifaceted nonprofit to help families like their own.
Each of the parents here has a horrendous story.
When we gather in the living room, Im sitting near a woman whose son, then 18, was murdered by gunshot on his way home from registering for school. Shes also concerned for her daughter, a mother of seven, homeless since the demolition in Amona. A young couple witnessed the murder of their seven-month-old in a baby swing.
The murderer knocked on their door during a holiday meal and opened fire.
Another couples son was blown up by a bomber at a gas station.
The womens psychodrama therapist, Zipora Cedar, wants to share with the men what the women have been participating in. Cedar is a veteran practitioner of the method invented by Dr. Jacob Levy Moreno, a treatment in which persons role-play real-life experiences, often playing themselves, sometimes family members or friends who have been affected by their behavior. On a table are piles of scarves: blue, brown, eggplant, red, orange, props for the externalization of hurts and wishes.
As an ice-breaker the men and women write two words each on a paper: how their spouse would describe them and how they would like to be described.
The papers are tossed in a magicians hat and read anonymously by others in the room. She sees me as detached, but Id like her to think of me as contemplative.
He thinks Im obsessive, but Id like him to think of me as talented. These are still-evolving long marriages that have survived the violent death of a child.
In another exercise, one of the women must choose an object, body part or person who is angry at her and act out the part. The volunteer pretends shes her late mother, angry because she has forgotten to light a memorial candle to mark the anniversary of her death. Then, playing herself, the bereaved mom explains that she is so overwhelmed by sorrow for the childs death that she cannot mourn more. Instead, she says, she remembers her mother every day, inside of her.
Others join in, describing dilemmas over subjects such as whether to bring children and grandchildren to cemeteries.
A man admits to relief when his mother died, because she had lived her life without knowing the agony of burying a child. Another speaks of his finally understanding his own father, who refused to speak of his first family killed in a world war.
Let the emotional penny drop inside you, urges Cedar, reminding the participants of the once-upon-atime tokens that fell in gas meters and phone booths.
I feel the penny of gratefulness that I am an observer and not a member in this group. Then falls the penny of thinking how much of life is wasted in anger and resentment over trivialities.
And theres a penny of appreciation for those who havent forgotten the deep pain of these bereaved parents and have gifted them with this beautiful Shabbat.
Each member chooses two colored scarves an unhappy one to throw away and another to symbolize the happier expectations for Shabbat. Sadness, worries and fear are cast aside, replaced with joy and fun and relaxation. Cedar covers them with the white scarves of Shabbat sanctity of the Shabbat bride.
Anemone coronaria earned its name kalanit because it evokes beauty and majesty, like a bride kalla on her wedding day.
In the final stanzas of Kalaniyot, a grandmother, her eyes glowing with laughter and tears, remembers a forgotten melody.
