6 Health Benefits and Uses for Sage – Care2.com

While it is easy to forget about sage until Thanksgiving dinner comes around once a year, this herb is such an impressive natural remedy that you might want to give it some year-round attention.

As early as the tenth century Arab doctors prescribed sage (Salvia officinalis) as capable of producing immortality. While it may not help you to live forever, it might help you live longer and with a greater quality of life due to its many health-promoting properties, some of which include:

Sage is a great all-natural memory booster. A British research team conducted a study of sages therapeutic properties on a group of 44 adults between the ages of 18 and 37. Some participants were given capsules of sage oil, while others were given a placebo of sunflower oil. Results showed that those who took the sage oil performed significantly better on memory tests than those who took the placebo. The people who were given sage as part of the study had improvements in both immediate and delayed word recall scores, as well as mood improvements. Additional research by the same scientific team led them to conclude that sage may also be helpful for those suffering from Alzheimers disease.

While sage is showing promise in the treatment of brain disease, its also beneficial to the brain in healthy individuals. In research a number of significant effects on cognition were noted with the sage species Salvia lavandulifolia. The effects included improvements in both immediate and delayed word recall scores, mood and overall cognition. It appears to work by inhibiting the enzyme acetylcholinesterase. This enzyme breaks down the essential neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which plays a role in mood regulation, brain-muscle coordination, and the formation of new memories. Since acetylcholine tends to be depleted in patients with Alzheimers disease, sage may be helpful in the treatment of Alzheimers.

Sage has a proven history of boosting memory and alleviating menopausal and PMS symptoms, but perhaps the most exciting benefit of sage essential oil is that it may actually protect genes from damage. According to a study published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, compounds in sage may protect DNA from damage and even stimulate DNA repair in already-damaged cells. While the research is new and the effect has not been tested in humans, this exciting advance could help in the prevention and treatment of genetic diseases as well as diseases with a genetic component, like cancer and heart disease.

Sage has been found to be so powerful in its ability to treat Alzheimers disease that the German Ministry of Health is currently considering adding sage as a treatment for Alzheimers disease to its Commission E Monographsa compilation of the safety and effectiveness of herbs. While there are various species of sage, the one most commonly found to be beneficial for Alzheimers disease is Salvia lavandulifolia.

Because of its estrogen-like properties, sage can help balance hormones in menstruating, nursing and menopausal women. It may decrease excessive menstruation and lactation and alleviate menopausal symptoms like hot flashes. Inhalation of or massage with diluted sage essential oil is the most direct route of affecting hormones; however, using the herbal extract in tea or tincture form can also be helpful.

The German government already recognizes sage as a treatment for dyspepsia, excessive perspiration, and inflammation of the mouth and nose. (Dyspepsia is a medical term for gas, bloating, burning, and general discomfort of the upper abdomen.)

More than just seasoning for stuffing a turkey, fresh or dried sage is an excellent addition to soups, stews and other savory dishes. Add it toward the end of the cooking time, as excessive cooking can damage some of its therapeutic compounds. You can also use sage for tea: use one teaspoon of dried herb per cup of hot water and allow the tea to steep for 10 to 15 minutes before drinking two to three times daily. As with all herbs, fresh sage is best, but feel free to use dried if thats all you have access to. Remember that sage is potent medicine, so if you are on any medication, consult with your doctor before taking it to avoid drug-herb interactions.

While sage is most commonly available as a dried herb, most of the health benefits demonstrated in studies have been achieved using sage oil capsules from the Salvia lavandulifolia plant. Because oil constituents vary by brand, follow label directions.

Garda treating human remains found in Wicklow Mountains ‘similar to a murder investigation’ – thejournal.ie

GARDA IN BRAY investigating the discovery of human remains in the Wicklow Mountains have said that a post-mortem will determine the type of investigation to be carried out.

Speaking to RT News this evening,Superintendent Pat Ward of Bray Garda Station said that the force was committing significant resources into following up on the discovery.

The discovery was made on Military Road, Enniskerry in the Wicklow Mountains by walkers around 7.45pm last night who immediately contacted Garda.

The scene of the discovery is preserved for a Garda forensic examination and the office of the State Pathologist and the local Coroner has been notified.

A post-mortem is due to be carried out on the remains.

Its similar to a murder investigation, Ward told reporters.

The type of investigation we are undertaking is comparable to a murder investigation, were putting as much resources and effort into it as if it was a murder investigation.

But the type of investigation that we undertake from now will be determined by the result of the post-mortem examination.

The remains have yet to be identified and enquiries are ongoing. Searches at the site are continuing.

Investigating Garda are appealing for any person who may have seen anything suspicious in the area or who may have information in relation to this investigation to contact Bray Garda Station on 01-666 5300, the Garda Confidential Line 1800 -666- 111 or any Garda Station.

Dubai’s Newest Addition to the Police Force: A Robot – Futurism

In Brief Dubai is introducing a robot to their police force to interact with citizens. Dubai's goal is to have their police force consist of 25% robots by 2030.

Dubai is set to introduce the newest member of their police force:a 5-foot, 5-inch [165.1 cm], 222-pound [100.698 kg] robot whichwill be equipped with facial recognition technology and have the ability to broadcast live video feeds.The first model, which will begin patrolling the streets of thefuturistic city today, will not be on the front lines making arrests, but will be interacting with the community. Residents of Dubai will be able to report crimes, pay fines, and ask the robot questions (though what sort of questions is unclear).

The head of Dubais Police Tech divisiontold reporters at the Gulf Information Security Expo and Conference that by 2030, [Dubai is] keen to make robots around 25% of the total police force. Thoughthis may sound like the beginning of a dystopian novel, this is not the first robot in use by a police force.

Police departments in the United States use robots for training purposes and also utilize bomb-diffusing robots that were first created for the American military. In 2016, the Cleveland Police used robots to patrol the Republican National Convention, while police in Dallas outfitted a robot with a bomb to kill a sniper after losing numerous police lives. South Korea has robot prison guards, and Israeli police use robots in their counter-terrorism unit.

While this is not the first robot to be put into use by police, it is the first that will be ever present on the streets of a city that will eventually be able to make arrests and have all of the responsibilities of a regular cop. The rollout will happen over the next decade, so hopefully that will be enough time to work out any kinks including robots lack of human empathy. And, as these robots have recording capabilities, make sure none of them document any PDA on video.

Scientists Assert That Earth May Exist in a Massive Cosmic Void – Futurism

In Brief University of Wisconsin-Madison researchers showed that the Milky Way exists in a part of the universe that's largely devoid of matter. Being in this void, however, could help settle the differences in measuring the rate of the universe's expansion. Riddled With Holes

If you picture what the universe looks like, you can imagine it as Swiss cheese. The sizes of holes, or voids, in the matter of the universe vary greatly. One example would be the cold spot that was found in the Universes radiation. Galaxies are connected by filaments of dark matterthat cannot be seen.

This means that the Milky Way exists in one of these voids, specifically the KBC void, which a 2013 study showed to be not as densely packed with matter as other voids. Its like our galaxy rests in a cosmological backwater the Outer Rim, so to speak. A new study from the University of Wisconsin-Madison which waspresented at the 2017 American Astronomical Society meeting confirms that the Milky Way does indeed reside in an enormous void.

However, the researchers claim that being in this huge KBC void also helps resolve the differences in measuring the rate the universe expands theHubble Constant, the number used to describe this cosmic expansion.

There are two ways to measure the expansion of the universe. One is a local determination using the Hubble Space Telescope, which relies on observations of supernovae that exploded in galaxies nearby. The other is a cosmic determination that relies on Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data the Big Bangs residual noise taken by the Planck observatory.

One possible explanation for the differences in the Hubble Constant measurement is due to differences in time. Hubbles observations rely on cosmic objects nearer in terms of time, while the CMB was emitted back when the universe was young. Simply put, being in a void with considerably lesser matter affects the measurement taken by observing supernovae explosions. On the other hand, the CMB technique doesnt distort the measurement at all.

No matter what technique you use, you should get the same value for the expansion rate of the Universe today, lead researcher Ben Hoscheit said in a press release. Fortunately, living in a void helps resolve this tension.

Isle de Jean Charles, a small island in southeastern Louisianas bayous, is drowning as the Gulf of Mexico rises. Twenty-ninehomes remain, housing 100 people, but they are all being relocated because the flooding is unstoppable. The island has already lost 98% of its land since 1955, making it one of the most visible victims of climate change so far. The residents can either leave their homes or die in them, and they are leaving.

Now theres just a little strip of land left, resident Rita Falgout tells Quartz. Thats all we have. Theres water all around us. Im anxious to go.

Residents of places like Isle de Jean Charles can compete for a chance to relocate through the National Disaster Resilience Competition (NDRC), a program organized by the federal government. The goal of the program is to help states and communities recover from disasters and lower risks from future disasters. However, the looming threats from climate change are growing, and affecting more and more communities; Louisiana alone is losing the equivalent of one football fields worth of land every hour.

Climate change is affecting larger coastal areas in the U.S., from Alaska down to Florida and Louisiana. Climate-induced migration is now a concrete reality for citizens of our country, not an abstract idea for politicians to talk about. Research from a March 2016 study indicates that collapsing polar ice caps are likely to cause sea levels to rise by 6 feet (1.8 meters) by 2100; this will in turn force at least 13.1 million Americans living in coastal areas to become homeless. A less drastic rise of 3 feet would leave at least 4 million homeless.

The only solution to these problems is combating climate change before it is too late. States like Hawaii are sticking with the Paris Accord goals, and various cities, states, and businesses are also banding together to maintain a commitment to this important issue, regardless of the action the federal government does or does not take. We cant relocate everyone, and our window for making a difference is closing. Thankfully, the world isnt giving up.

The International Space Station (ISS) orbits the Earth, and it's visible when it flies over Asheville, if you know where and when to look.

At 10:42 p.m. on Friday, June 9, 2017 the ISS will fly over Asheville and be visible as it crosses overhead, but only for only a minute. (If you're seeing this story ahead of the flyover, a good way to remember to watch the ISS is to set an alarm on your cell phone.)

If skies are clear in your area, look northwest and wait for the ISS to become visible over the horizon. It will look like a bright, fast-moving star, and will travel overhead and move out of sight into the north-northeast.

The ISS travels at about 17,150 mph if you can believe that, and you can view how many people are aboard it right here.

There are many views of the International Space Station here in early June. Heres the complete schedule here. Tonights flyover really stands out. Its at 9:49 pm. Well still be in twilight. The space station appears halfway up from the horizon to the northwest and moves DIRECTLY OVERHEAD (89 degrees). Itll be visible until it moves into the Earths shadow at 11 degrees off the SE horizon four minutes later. Heres a link to a map that shows where the space station is right now (takes a little while to open the page). Heres another tracking map with the position of the sun. The Space Station circles the globe about every 93 minutes. Its about the size of a football field and flies about 220 miles above the ground, about the distance between Grand Rapids and Indianapolis. From drugs to fruit flies: What SpaceX took to the International Space Station – GeekWire

SpaceX impressed the world yet again last week with a flawless ground landing of the Falcon 9 rocket and the fact that it became the first commercial space company to send a vehicle, the Dragon cargo capsule, into orbit twice.

Dragon delivered 6,000 pounds of cargo on its CRS-11 resupply mission to give the astronauts living aboard the International Space Station (ISS) a refresh of supplies in addition to some equipment for scientific research. Here is some of the cargo SpaceX delivered:

1. A bone-rebuilding drug

A common side effect of spending time in space is an osteoporosis diagnosis the weakening of the bones. NASA researchers dont know why, but the phenomenon has been found in both humans and animals in microgravity.

While the astronauts do take measures to prevent bone density loss like exercising for hours a day and taking dietary supplements, there is no known way to get bone density back after its gone.

The Systemic Therapy of NELL-1 for osteoporosis (Rodent Research-5)investigation builds on previous research testing a drug that not only prevents bone loss, but rebuilds it, too. Researchers hope the drug could help millions of people on Earth who suffer from osteoporosis.

The Neutron star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) is expected to be fired up on the ISS June 14 to study the composition of neutron stars.

According to Johnson Space Center in a statement, neutron stars are the densest objects in the universe, and contain exotic states of matter that are impossible to replicate in any ground lab. Theyre left behind after a star explodes as a supernova. They emit X-rays that NICER can observe and record.

The Fruit Fly Lab-02 flew to the space station to understand why microgravity causes changes in the heart. According to the statement, reduced gravity can cause changes in heartbeat, total blood volume and lower aerobic capacity.

The fruit flies make good test subjects because they age quickly and have well-understood genetics. Researchers want to use the experiment to make a microgravity heart model to advance further cardiovascular studies and help prevent adverse heart effects from happening in the future.

This new solar panel concept could give power to thrusters on NASA spacecraft headed near the moon or even to Mars.

Traditionally, solar panels are tucked away for launch and unfolded in orbit. The ROSA solar panels are less rigid, roll out like a tape measure and are much lighter and more compact.

In the future, this technology could give more power to commercial communication satellites orbiting Earth, NASA said.

Dragon will leave the ISS and splash back down to Earth in July and return some crew supplies and thousands of pounds worth of experiments.

Chinese Experiment Reaches Space Station in Historic First – Space.com

A Chinese experiment is now on the International Space Station (ISS), having reached the orbiting lab Monday (June 5) aboard a SpaceX Dragon cargo spacecraft.

NanoRacks, a Houston-based company that helps other companies and institutions make use of the ISS, worked with the Beijing Institute of Technology to fly Chinese DNA research to the orbiting outpost.

No commercial Chinese payload had ever flown to the orbiting lab before.

China's state-run Xinhua news agency reported Sunday (June 4) that the 8-lb. (3.5 kilograms) experiment is designed to answer questions such as: Do "space radiation and microgravity cause mutations among antibody-encoding genes, and how does it happen?"

The experiment will be installed on the U.S. side of the ISS. Xinhua noted that astronauts there will conduct studies using the device in about two weeks, and data from their studies will be sent back to the Chinese researchers on Earth.

"There is a U.S. law in place, known as the Wolf amendment, that bans cooperation between the U.S. space agency NASA and Chinese government entities, but this [DNA experiment] deal is purely commercial and therefore considered legal," Xinhua said.

Deng Yulin, who is leading the Chinese research, said that this is the first time an ISS experiment has been independently designed and fabricated in China.

"This cooperation does not violate any laws and regulations, including the Wolf amendment. We do it in an open and visible way," Deng told Xinhua. "This is a new model of cooperation that we can follow in the future."

"We were careful to honor not only the Wolf Amendment, but [also] the spirit of the concerns of some towards working with the Chinese," NanoRacks CEO Jeff Manber told Inside Outer Space. "But via the commercial pathway, we are able to craft a world-class research project that demonstrates the leadership of NASA and the space station in low-Earth orbit."

Manber said he was pleased to have this first commercial project from China underway and that he "looks forward to carefully building a program that enhances the commercial competitiveness of American companies in space. I also look forward to one day soon working on board the Chinese space station," he added.

IKEA engineers are pretending to live on Mars to help them design better furniture – Popular Science

At face value, it sounds delightfully goofyand totally useless: Swedish furniture company IKEA, known for creating impossibly cheap (and often incredibly chic) flat-pack furniture, has sent several of its engineers to live in a Mars simulation. Yes, the brave men and women who designed your beloved EKTORP sofa and GJRA bed frame are hanging out at the Mars Desert Research Station in Utah, playing at space colonization.

Its a crazy, fun experience. Were basically completely isolated for three days to get a taste of what astronauts go through for three years," IKEA Creative Leader Michael Nikolic said in a statement.

"What does comfort mean for compact living? How do we feel in small spaces? This year IKEA is digging a bit deeper," the press release says, as if the next logical step after "Scandinavian apartment" is "tiny dome on a desolate alien world".

But the exercise, which IKEA announced this week at its annual Democratic Design Day event in lmhult, isn't just about helping NASA create cozier space habitatsthough WIRED reports that the team is hopeful they'll be able to come up with some interesting ideas in collaboration with Lund University, which in turn does work with NASA.

The primary goal is actually to use the extreme conditions of a Mars simulationimpersonal design, cramped quarters, space toiletsto come up with design solutions that will work even better on Earth.

IKEA engineers aren't the only folks thinking this way. In May, former PopSci intern Eleanor Cummins reported on farmers who hoped that in learning to grow food on spaceships and alien planetsa sexy avenue of research, to be surescientists might actually learn how to do things that are more immediately useful, like farm more efficiently in drought-stricken regions and get more nutritional bang for our energy buck. Designing with space in mind can help scientists and engineers think outside of the box, but given the fact that we don't even have a Mars mission on the books yetlet alone viable plans to colonize the planetit's great news if we can reap the rewards on Earth, too (whether those rewards are super-efficient farms or adorable modular furniture pieces).

If IKEA can design a clothing storage system that works well inside a Martian habitat, it can certainly design a clothing system that works well inside your horrible apartment in Brooklyn. And by gosh, that's what IKEA is going to do: In 2019, they plan to release a collection of 30 or so items inspired by space (reader, I'm buying it all).

I think that the essence of this collection will be about appreciating what we have on Earth: human beings, plants clean water and air," Nikolic said. "But also diversity and a sense of belongingthings that we take for granted on a daily basis. After this journey, itll probably feel pretty awesome to come home to my own bed."

As far as gimmicky PR moves go, a flat-pack mission to Mars isn't bad. But the exercise also serves as an important reminder of the design challenges we'll face in the coming century: as Earth gets more crowdedand less comfortablewe're going to entertain the thought of packing up and leaving more and more. But like IKEA's intrepid team of engineers, as we figure out ingenious ways to live off-world, we should remember to apply the same spirit of innovation to efforts to make our own planet a comfier place.
