View the International Space Station during Riverbend – Chattanooga Times Free Press
Posted: June 12, 2017 at 7:48 pm
Sometimes the stars align just right and for Graham Truelove, a fan of both music and the International Space Station, this week is one of those times.
By happenstance, the ISS will be traveling above Chattanooga every night of Riverbend, meaning fans watching the show can look to the heavens at just the right time to see the ship fly over, weather permitting, of course. It will happentonightat9:42and will be visable for four minutes. There will be another good opportunityon Wednesday.
"We saw iton Fridayduring Boz Scaggs," Truelove said.
"I told everyone around us and they didn't believe me, but they were impressed. People like science I guess."
Tonight, the ISS will come from the north traveling towards the east. Riverbend moves to Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevardtonight, so you will have to turn around to see it. "When the music is on the Coke Stage, you just have to look up," Truelove said.
Normally, the ISS is viewable a couple a nights a month. It's rare to see it this many days in a row, Truelove says.
"It's just an accident of science that it is viewable during the entire Riverbend festival."
He said his family has been following the ISS for 25 years. You can check for information and the station's path atspotthestation.nasa.gov.

China to open space station to scientists worldwide – Space Daily – Space Daily
Posted: at 7:48 pm
China will open its space station to scientists worldwide after the station is completed around 2022, according to a Chinese space expert.
Wei Chuanfeng, a researcher at the Institute of Manned Space System Engineering under the China Academy of Space Technology, said the China Manned Space Engineering Office has drafted a strategic framework with United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs to offer opportunities on the application of Chinese space station to members of United Nations.
Wei made the remarks on Thursday at the 2017 Global Space Exploration Conference, which was held in Beijing.
Under the framework, China will open its experimental resources on the Chinese space station to serve payloads from other countries. UN members, especially developing countries, could conduct scientific and technological experiment on Chinese space station, Wei said.
China's first astronaut Yang Liwei, who is also deputy director of China Manned Space Engineering Office, said the nation would launch the first core module of the space station in 2019, followed by two experiment modules. The space station will enable astronauts to stay in space for up to six months.
At the conference, the designers behind the Chinese space station proposed possible technical approaches that could help scientists from other countries utilize and perform experiments on the space station. China will also help astronauts and payloads specialists from developing countries to enter into space, Wei said.
The Chinese space station will be composed of three modules, including a core module and two experiment modules. The space station will have three docking sites, enabling the dock and berth of the "Shenzhou" manned spacecraft, the "Tianzhou" cargo spacecraft and other vehicles, according to Wei.

Moon or Mars – humanity’s next stop – Space Daily
Posted: at 7:47 pm
Back in 1969, Neil Armstrong, the first person to walk on the moon, uttered his famous words: "That's one small step for (a) man, one giant leap for mankind."
The statement has inspired ever since. More than 500 astronauts have entered space in the nearly five decades that have followed, and over 10 have landed on the moon.
Buzz Aldrin, the second man to set foot on the moon and Armstrong's companion in the Apollo 11 mission, gave a presentation on his ideas for visiting Mars at the Global Space Exploration Conference (GLEX 2017), which concluded on Thursday.
Global leaders in space exploration have now set their sights on Mars, including China.
Wu Yanhua, deputy head of the China National Space Administration (CNSA), said that the country has started an unmanned Mars probe project and plans to launch a Mars probe around 2020.
Steve Eisenhart, senior vice president of the Strategic and International Affairs of the Space Foundation of the United States, said that Aldrin has been working on his idea for close to 30 years.
According to Aldrin's plan, humans may be able to land on Mars before 2039 and set up a station there. Eisenhart and Aldrin, while not representing the U.S. government or the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), agreed that Mars is a good destination for space exploration.
However, Jan Woerner, director-general of European Space Agency (ESA), said that the moon is a good stepping-stone before going to Mars.
"If we have a goal which is too far away, there might be roads in between those inspirations," said Woerner, adding that the moon is close enough to test and develop needed technology. "It's a very good test bed - then go deeper into our solar system."
Tian Yulong, secretary-general of the CNSA, said that China is now in discussions with the ESA on co-building a "moon village."
Tian said that a house on the moon could be constructed within a week with materials brought from Earth as well as moon surface materials using 3D printing technology.
Yasuyuki Ito, associate director-general of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, said that his generation was greatly affected by the Apollo program.
"Lunar exploration is our target. At the same time, we've also been discussing a Mars goal," he added.
Pascale Ehrenfreund, chair of the executive board of the German Aerospace Center, said that bringing humans to Mars is very difficult, as is raising funds for space exploration.
"We do things in steps. And the moon is one of the important steps on our way to Mars," she said.
China's Lunar Exploration China's Chang'e lunar program, named after a legendary goddess, includes three phases: orbiting, landing and returning with samples.
Liu Jizhong, director of the China Lunar Exploration and Space Engineering Center of the CNSA, said the Chang'e 5 lunar probe is expected to land in the Mons Rumker region and to take samples back to Earth at the end of the year.
The probe landing site, an isolated volcanic formation located on the northwest of the near side of the moon.
"China is planning and designing its future lunar exploration program. We will focus on the south pole region of the moon. The research on water and the permanent shadow area of the lunar south pole region will bring greater scientific discoveries," Liu said.
According to Wu Yansheng, general manager of China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC), China is working on an idea for manned lunar landing.
The mission will consist of a manned spaceship, a propulsion vehicle and a lunar lander. The manned spaceship and the lunar lander will be sent into circumlunar orbit separately.
Yang Liwei, deputy director of the China Manned Space Engineering Office, said that China is in the preliminary stage of its manned lunar program and estimated that Chinese astronauts will be able to walk on the moon around 2030.
Low-Cost Space Transport Without capable launch vehicles, humans are not able to go deeper into space.
China's Long March carrier rockets still have room for improvement, according to Lu Yu, director of Science and Technology Committee of the China Academy of Launch Vehicle Technology (CALT).
He said that CALT is developing a heavy-lift launch vehicle with a payload of 140 tonnes to low Earth orbit and 50 tonnes to lunar transfer orbit.
CALT has made progress in developing reusable launch vehicles, including parachute landing and propulsion landing, said Lu.
Founded by U.S. entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2002, SpaceX aims to reduce space transportation costs and enable the colonization of Mars. It has developed the Falcon launch vehicle family and invested big in reusable technology for orbital rockets.
Aerospace transportation is now focused on low-cost ways to enter space, said Wang Guoqing, a CASC official.
Wang said leaders in space exploration have set up their own range of launch vehicles and systems, and reusing launch vehicles will become important for reducing costs.
"Breakthroughs have been achieved in reusable technology after 10 years of study. However, we still face challenges as reusable aerospace launches require high reliability and safety," he added.
Win-Win Situation Chinese and global space leaders reached an agreement on cooperation in space exploration at GLEX 2017 - no matter whether they aim for the moon or Mars.
"China is expanding cooperation with the United Nations (UN) in space exploration and will disclose projects later this year," said Yang.
The country has previously undertaken bilateral cooperation with various countries and institutions and is looking toward multilateral projects. China will carry out joint projects with the UN Office of Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA), including astronaut training, scientific experiments aboard space stations and multilateral application of such experiments, he added.
Liu also proposed creating an open platform for cooperation in accordance with the principle of "sharing the risks and achievements" and setting up the International Union of Planetary Scientists and the International Union of Planetary Science College Students.
"Rather than a space race, I think cooperation is always good and worldwide cooperation is even better. I hope we can breach Earth's crises by having worldwide cooperation in space," said Woerner.
"We should not try to duplicate everything, and if we join forces we can do even more with the same amount of money," he added.

Genetic engineering boosts immunity against crop disease – Daily Nation
Posted: at 7:47 pm
= By ANGELA OKETCH More by this Author 2 hoursago
The chemicals that farmers spray on their crops in form of pesticides to kill pests and prevent diseases have always been a bone of contention, with researchers trying to find safer alternatives. A new variety of rice that fights multiple pathogens with no effect on the yield of the crop, is thus a welcome relief for both farmers and scientists.
The discovery is based on a study of the plants immune system. Plants use receptors on the outside of their cells to identify molecules that signal a microbial invasion, and respond by releasing antimicrobial compounds. Therefore, identifying genes that kickstart this immune response yields disease-resistant plants.
Just like sick humans who are unproductive at work, plants grow poorly and produce unfavourable yields when their immune systems are overloaded. For a long time, scientists have focused on the NPR1 gene from a small, woody plant called Arabidopsis thaliana, to boost the immune systems of rice, wheat, tomatoes and apples.
However, NPR1 is not very useful for agriculture because it has negative effects on plants. To make it useful, researchers needed a better gene that would activate the immune response only when the plant is under attack. Rice with the gene was able to combat rice blast which often causes an estimated 30 per cent loss of rice crop worldwide, every year.
A segment of DNA called the TBF1 cassette acted as a control switch for the plants immune response. When the TBF1 cassette from the Arabidopsis genome was copied and pasted alongside and in front of the NPR1 gene in rice plants, it resulted in a strain of rice that could fend off offending pathogens without causing stunted growth seen in previously engineered crops.
The researchers tested the superiority of engineered rice over regular rice by inoculating crop leaves with the bacterial pathogens that cause rice blight and leaf streak, as well as the fungus responsible for blast disease. Whereas the infections spread on the leaves of wild rice plants, the engineered plants confined the invaders to a small area.
The researchers say this innovation could come in handy in the developing world where farmers with no access to fungicide often lose their entire crop to disease. The study was published in Nature.

JScreen Doubles List of Tested Genetic Diseases – Atlanta Jewish Times
Posted: at 7:47 pm
The leading nonprofit organizationscreening Jewish couples for genetic diseases hasmore than doubled its testing capacity.
JScreen, based at the Emory University School of Medicines human genetics department, increased its testing panel from 100 to more than 200 disease genes that could affect a couples future offspring.
Many of these conditions happen in families where theres no known history, JScreen Executive Director Karen Grinzaid said in a phone interview. All of a sudden, a child is born, and theres a genetic problem. There is testing available to give people a heads-up about these things before they have kids.
One in three people of Jewish background unknowingly is a carrier for at least one Jewish genetic disease.
Conditions common in the Jewish population, such as Tay-Sachs, Gaucher disease, thalassemia, mucolipidosis Type IV, spinal muscular atrophy and Fragile X syndrome, are part of the nationwide screening process, andmany others are now included.
Half (the diseases) are common in the Jewish population; the other half are just common in the general population, Grinzaid said. Having this broader screening panel is important because, even though I may think Im 100 percent Ashkenazi, I dont absolutely know my background. Its possible there is other ancestry we dont know about. In addition to that, people have mixed backgrounds or may be in interfaith relationships.
She added, What were looking for are diseases where both parents seem healthy, but they dont know theyre carriers, so if they both pass that gene onto a child, that child will have that condition.
Joining Grinzaid in the interview was Gail Heyman, a member of JScreens advisory board and a carrier of the Fragile X syndromepre-mutation who unknowingly passed on the condition to her son. Its a gene that has impacted our family greatly. Usually when you find a genetic disorder, its alarming. You dont know what to do, but after counseling, you can figure out what to do next.
That counseling sets the JScreenprocess apart, Grinzaid said. There are companies you get a kit from that just mail you results, and you have to figure out on your own what to do and what that all means for you and your family. People need to understand the results and what their options are. We wanted to make that support an integral part of our program.
If families have information, they have choices, Grinzaid said. You can have a conversation with your spouse about what you would or would not do if you were to have an affected child. Our goal is to get to people preconception, as much as possible, so they can make decisions on different reproductive options, such as in vitro fertilization or adoption, and maximize their chances of having a healthy family.
The screening for these diseases is done through DNA found in saliva samples using genetic sequencing technology, and JScreen operates under the direction of aphysician who specializes in genetics.
Another thing, Grinzaidsaid. People dont do it because they dont think its affordable, or maybe their insurance doesnt cover it, or theres a huge deductible. A lot of what we do is from philanthropic dollars, so even if their insurance covers nothing, its the same for everybody. That really helps improve access and encourage people to take advantage of the test, and the expanded screening really opens up the door for more people to participate.
The cost of the test, including counseling, is $149.

Lissa Schairer says shed rather be white in America because its easier.
The Newport Beach residents sister, who lives in Maryland, adopted two children from Haiti. Schairer says her black niece, a teenager, was recently detained by a police officer on a sidewalk as she was waiting for her mother to pick her up from a mall outing with friends.
The officer let her go only after my sister, who is white, came and vouched for my niece, she said. White privilege is real and Ive seen it in my own family.
Schairer is one of the members of St. James the Great Episcopal Church an overwhelmingly Caucasian congregation in Newport Beach who participated in a Race Project spearheaded by the pastor, the Rev. Canon Cindy Voorhees.
It wasnt just about watching movies such as Moonlight, Fences or Im Not Your Negro. They wanted it to be more than that, Voorhees said.
So in May, several of them, including Schairer, took a trip to The National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. They also took DNA tests to learn more about their own race and ethnicity.
On a recent Sunday afternoon, a group of church members met with Colleen Greene, genealogist and academic librarian at Cal State Fullerton, who helped them make sense of their test results.
For the purpose of the project, church members took what is known as an autosomal DNA test, which tests DNA from the nucleus of the cell to trace all ancestral lines going back up to about 1,000 years, to provide a percentage breakdown of ethnicities and world regions from where ones ancestors might have come. The test also provides a list of other people who might share common ancestors within the past six generations.
Greene said the tests are pretty accurate.
The only area where they may not be as accurate is in determining the geographic region the ancestors may have come from because it doesnt take migration into account, she said.
Greene said she was intrigued by the church groups eagerness to take the DNA test.
This is something thats extremely rare for a church to do, she said.
Voorhees agreed its not commonly done. But, she said, her congregation wanted to venture into this uncharted territory to better understand how race and ethnicity help shape identities and sensibilities.
We asked ourselves how we could do something as a community, Voorhees said. How do we expose ourselves to what is going on around us in terms of racial tension?
The DNA test results didnt shock members, but there were a few surprises.
Schairers test showed she was mostly of European descent, but that some of her ancestors may have come from the Iberian Peninsula, which encompasses Spain and Portugal.
And she wasnt the only one who came away with unexpected information.
Megan Doherty of Irvine said she found out from her DNA test that she wasnt as Irish as she had thought. The test indicated she was mostly Ulster Irish, from the Ulster province north of Ireland.
Voorhees, herself, was a little surprised when she found out shewas more than 85 percent English and 8 percent Middle Eastern.
My family has always identified itself as German, she said. So, that was interesting.
Greene said it is common for most American families to identify with a certain ethnicity or country. But their DNA may tell a different story.
You inherit differentpieces of your DNA, she said. While you might know for a fact that one of your ancestors was English or German, you may have none of that in you.
David Stockmans test results showed DNA that was mostly European, but the Newport Beach resident said he has always empathized with African-Americans because he lived in Washington, D.C., grew up in Detroit and even lived through a race riot there.
Its heartbreaking that the issue of race is tearing our country apart, he said.
Voorhees said the churchs Race Project was in part a response to several fatal police shootings around the country and the killing of police officers in Dallas, which brought the issue of race relations to the fore.
Schairer said what the DNA test and the project taught her is that human beings have more in common than they realize.
Our genes are 99.5 percent the same the difference is only in that 0.5 percent, she said. I can see how interconnected we all are. So all these tensions and all this hatred it just doesnt make any sense.

You've probably heard how companies like Ancestry.com or 23-and-me can use your DNA to tell you where you came from. Now for the first time in our area, police are using similar technology to tell us what a suspect might look like.
Scott Broom, WUSA 5:57 PM. EDT June 12, 2017
GAITHERSBURG, MD (WUSA9) - For the first time, police in the D.C. area are turning to a new DNA analytic system that helps them predict who a suspect may be.
"DNA was considered to be just a fingerprint for a very long time," said EllenGraytakofParabonNanolabs, the Northern Virginia-based company that is offering DNA analytics to investigators nationwide. "What this can do is actually tell those investigators something they couldn't have known."
Montgomery County Police are hoping the technology will help them solve the 1992 murder ofJamesEssel, who was the operator of the Sugarloaf Mountain Market in Comas before he was stabbed to death in the store.
PREVIOUS:PhotoDNAmay have tracked alleged child pornographer
For years detectives have had the description of a possible suspect vehicle, but had no idea what the person driving might have looked like.
Scientists used DNA collected from the scene to create a composite of who the person might be.
In the case of theEssenmurder, the DNA shows the suspect is likely to be a Latino man with a medium dark skin color, brown eyes, and black hair. The technology also predicts key features of the suspect's facial structure.
PREVIOUS:DNA test tells you which workout, diet is perfect for you
In concept, the technology is similar to commercial DNA analysis performed by companies like Ancestry.com or23andMethat help customers learn more about their heritage and health backgrounds. However theParabonsystem provides much more detailed analysis, including predictions about facial features and shape.

DNA from zoo’s polar bears used in fight against poaching – Youngstown Vindicator
Posted: at 7:46 pm

By ALISSA WIDMAN NEESE
Columbus Dispatch
COLUMBUS
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium polar bear cubs arent just cute and cuddly.
Theyre also helping the federal government fight crimes against their wild relatives in the Arctic, thanks to advancements in forensic science and DNA testing.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Services Forensic Laboratory in Oregon often relies on zoos to maintain its database of DNA samples from protected animal species. But when the Columbus Zoo sent DNA from its six polar bears to the lab in March, it came with payoffs for both parties including a confirmation of whether the zoos three newest cubs are male or female.
The labs scientists analyze evidence during investigations of violations of federal wildlife protection laws, including poaching, illegal trading of animals, theft of rare plants and creating products from endangered species.
For example, the lab could use DNA to identify a decaying carcass as a protected animal or confirm that a business is selling items made with bald eagle feathers or elephant ivory.
Scientists are trying to perfect a new, more accurate DNA test for bears and benefited from the Columbus Zoos controlled samples from a known family of animals. The reference data illustrate how genetic patterns change in a population over time. It could someday pin down criminals who harm polar bears, which are protected by the Marine Mammal Protection Act and the Endangered Species Act, on which the bears are listed as threatened.
Only an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears are living in the wild, and there are just 40 or so bears in 27 U.S. zoos that are members of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
Our polar bear database is fairly small, so the more samples we can get, the better, senior forensic scientist Mary Burnham Curtis said.
The zoo, meanwhile, was seeking a noninvasive way to determine the sexes of its baby bears. Because the 6-month-old animals are being raised by their mothers and not hand-reared by zookeepers, staffers would have had to put them under anesthesia to examine their genitals and make an official determination.
That seemed like an unnecessary risk for something that was just curiosity, not critical, said Randy Junge, the zoos vice president of animal health.
Luckily, we were able to help each other out.
