Rick Perry just denied that humans are the main cause of climate change – Washington Post
Posted: June 19, 2017 at 6:41 pm
Energy Secretary Rick Perry on Mondaydenied that man-made carbon dioxide emissions are the primary cause of climate change.
Asked in an interview on CNBCs Squawk Box whether he believed that carbon dioxide was the primary control knobfor the temperature of the Earth and for climate, Perry said that No, most likely the primary control knob is the ocean waters and this environment that we live in.
Perry added that the fact is this shouldnt be a debate about, Is the climate changing, is man having an effect on it? Yeah, we are. The question should be just how much, and what are the policy changes that we need to make to effect that?
[A bitter scientific debate just erupted over the future of the U.S. electric grid]
Perrys comments fall in line with what Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt said in a March interview on the program. Pruitt said then that he does not believe carbon dioxide is a primary contributor to global warming.
Both mens views contradict the conclusions of scientists at Pruitts own EPA as well as NASA, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
It is extremely likely that human influence has been the dominant cause of the observed warming since the mid-20th century, the IPCC said in a 2013 report. Citing the IPCC report, theEPA said on its website, now removed, that recent climate changes, however, cannot be explained by natural causes alone. Research indicates that natural causes do not explain most observed warming, especially warming since the mid-20th century. The EPA added, it is extremely likely that human activities have been the dominant cause of that warming.
On Monday, Gavin Schmidt, a top climate scientist at NASA, tweeted that a paper he co-authored in 2010 used an almost identical phrase in its title principal control knob as the CNBCs Squawk Box used Monday. But the paper published in Science Magazine warned about the danger of anthropogenic, or man-made, carbon dioxide continuing unabated. The paper said that the high rate of atmospheric CO2 increase was particularly worrisome and that the atmospheric CO2 control knob is now being turned faster than at any time in the geological record.
The Center for Biological Diversity took issue with Perrys comment about the oceans. Perry has the science exactly backward, Shaye Wolf, climate science director at the center, said. Far from being climate changes key cause, the worlds oceans are actually another victim of greenhouse pollution.
Wolf added, Our oceans absorb millions of tons of carbon dioxide a day, making them dangerously acidic. Theyve also soaked up most of man-made global warmings excess heat, putting tremendous stress on marine life.
Its true that over far longer time periods, other factors have driven changes to the Earths climate, such as wobbles in the Earths orbit around the sun. But in the most immediate period and in the current climate debate, scientists have made very clear that human emissions are the cause.
Perry said, however, that being a skeptic about the causes of climate change was quite all right. He said, this idea that science is just absolutely settled and if you dont believe its settled then somehow youre another Neanderthal, that is so inappropriate from my perspective.
Perry is scheduled to testify three times this week on the Trump administrations proposed fiscal 2018 budget.
Perry has long avoided getting pinned down on mankinds contribution to climate change, and he has said that action on climate change should be weighed against economic costs. Although Perry urged President Trump to remain in the Paris climate accord, Trump cited economic impacts when he announced his decision to pull the United States out of the climate accord. Trump drew on forecasts about impacts from a controversial report.
At his confirmation hearing for the energy secretary position, Perry brought up the politically sensitive topic, saying he believed the climate is changing and some of it is caused by man-made activity. He added then: The question is how we address it in a thoughtful way that doesnt compromise economic growth.
Citing Perrys assertion in his 2010 book that the planet was in a cooling trend, Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.) asked him how much he thinks climate change is caused by human activity. Far from me to be sitting before you today and claiming to be a climate scientist. I will not do that, Perry said, dodging the question.
Chris Mooney contributed to this article.

When Navy ships collide, there is virtually always human error involved – Washington Post
Posted: at 6:41 pm
Ten years ago, Scott Cheney-Peters stood watch on the bridge of the USS Fitzgerald, a guided-missile destroyer deployed to the Pacific. Despite sophisticated navigation systems, keeping the ship a safe distance from other vessels in crowded maritime corridors was complex, especially at night, he said.
The bridge teams have help from some automated systems that suggest what they think is happening and can alert the human operators to potentially dangerous situations, said Cheney-Peters, the founder of the Center for International Maritime Security, which facilitates discussion of naval issues. But as with any algorithm, those alerts can be occasionally thrown off, in this case by things like large waves or two other ships very close together so its humans that have to ultimately make navigation decisions.
Early Saturday morning, the Fitzgerald found itself at the center of one of the ugliest maritime incidents in years for the Navy. The 505-foot long ship collided off the coast of Japan with the Philippine-flagged MV ACX Crystal, a 730-foot container ship. The Crystal ripped a 12-foot hole in the starboard (right) side of the Fitzgeralds hull, fully flooding the third and fourth platform levels of the ship and drowning seven sailors in sleeping quarters, according to Navy officials and an unclassified document obtained by The Washington Post.
Three additional people, including the ships commanding officer, Cmdr. Bryce Benson, were medically evacuated from the ship by helicopter, Navy officials have said.
[There wasnt a lot of time as water flooded U.S. destroyer below decks]
The dead included Gunners Mate Seaman Dakota Kyle Rigsby, 19; Yeoman 3rd Class Shingo Alexander Douglass, 25; Sonar Technician 3rd Class Ngoc T. Truong Huynh, 25; Gunners Mate 2nd Class Noe Hernandez, 26; Fire Controlman 2nd Class Carlos Victor Ganzon Sibayan, 23; Personnel Specialist 1st Class Xavier Alec Martin, 24; and Firecontrolman 1st Class Gary Leo Rehm Jr., 37.
The damage to the Fitzgerald, which typically carries about 279 U.S. service members, is so extensive that senior Navy officials are discussing spending $8 million to put it on a powerful heavy-lift ship and bring it back to a shipyard for repairs, the document said. The Navy did the same with the USS Cole, which was hit by terrorists with explosives in October 2000, and the USS Samuel B. Roberts, which was nearly sunk by an Iranian mine in the Persian Gulf in 1988.
Several investigations are now underway to determine what happened. And if past is prologue, the Navy will assess how human error on the part of either crew could have led to such a catastrophe, despite all of the radar and communication systems on board. Similar situations occur about once every decade or so, and are a deep, powerful reminder of how fundamentally dangerous it is to operate warships at sea, said retired Navy Adm. James Stavridis, who was once the captain of a sister destroyer, the USS Barry.
To understand how could this happen, you need to think of that particular area of the sea as an eight-lane highway, at night, with ships moving at speed but no traffic lanes, Stavridis said in an email. Any sudden, erratic move by another ship poses an extreme risk, with little time to react, exactly as if a car just ahead of you on the highway suddenly turned around. At night, its hard to figure out the visual picture and correlate it with the radar images. The investigation will pull that apart with extreme diligence, and accountability will be swift and ruthless.
Stavridis, now thedean of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, called the situation heartbreaking, and credited sailors on the Fitzgerald with saving the ship from sinking, which almost certainly would have made the loss of life far heavier.
The incident will become the basis for extensive scenario training by the Navy to try as much as we can to avoid the next such incident [everything] from ship handling, to command and control, to technology and warning systems will be examined and improved, he said. But the cost of losing those seven sailors will never be recovered, tragically. It is a heartbreaking day for the good ship Fitzgerald and her captain.
Seven U.S. sailors went missing after a U.S. Navy destroyer collided with a Philippine-flagged merchant ship off the coast of Japan on June 17. A number of the missing sailors were found dead in the destroyer's flooded berthing compartments. (Elyse Samuels,Monica Akhtar/The Washington Post)
Previous collisions also may come up as the service scrutinizes how to avoid another accident. In one recent incident, the USS Porter, another destroyer, collided in 2012 in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Iran with the MV Otowasan, an oil tanker. An investigation found that the Porters crew missed that the tanker was in front of them while watching out for other traffic in the tightly congested waterway. In that case, the Porters captain, attempted to cross left ahead of the tanker to avoid a head-on collision, but was not able to do so in time to avoid a blow to the starboard side.
Analysts have so far questioned the unusual path of the Crystal, which was proceeding on a course toward Tokyo but performed a sudden U-turn and returned to where it had been. Company officials said the turn actually happened about an hour after the collision, as its crew turned back to check on the Fitzgerald.
One former naval surface warfare officer, speaking on the condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the situation, said it appeared to him that the Fitzgerald was in the wrong when it was struck by the Crystal.
Im always troubled when you see a hit on the [right] side, the former Navy officer said. My gut is that [the captain] will be questioned on why he didnt turn right.
The officer said he was surprised that Benson wasnt on the bridge at the time of the collision, and was instead hurt in his quarters. The waterways where the two vessels collided are notorious for the heavy volume of shipping traffic, where lights and radars contacts can make navigation extremely difficult.
After seeing where the collision was, the officer said those with experience in damage control knew right away what had become of the missing sailors, as their berthing areas flooded and were sealed.
We knew they were trapped inside, he said. We knew it had turned into a chamber of death.
Among the work the Navy will undertake in coming days is offloading the Fitzgeralds weapons and fuel, and gathering data from the ships electronics so that the incident can be reconstructed. Presently, anyone going aboard the ship needs permission from a senior military officer.
Thomas Gibbons-Neff contributed to this report.

Minnesota has the third highest number of human trafficking cases in the nation, according to the FBI
ST. PAUL, Minn. The Minnesota Department of Transportation has announced it will be installing posters at 41 rest areas across the state to educate the public about human trafficking.
The posters include guidelines on how to recognize signs of human trafficking and potential victims, and a toll-free hotline to report any suspicious activity.
Human trafficking often involves travel, which includes the transport of victims form a base of operations to locations of exploitation.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Twin Cities is one of the 13 U.S. cities with a particularly high rate of child prostitution, and Minnesota has the third highest number of human trafficking cases in the nation, said MnDOT Commissioner Charlie Zelle. MnDOTs responsibility for maintaining the quality and safety of multiple modes of transportation, including highways, airports, rail lines, transit systems, and commercial vehicles, provides unique opportunities to see, and stop, human trafficking.
MnDOT signed a pledge in January 2017 to join Transportation Leaders Against Human Trafficking, to make a stand against human trafficking and work to develop resources to inform the traveling public, as well as its employees on the issues.

NASA Just Discovered 10 Earth-Like Alien Planets – Futurism
Posted: at 6:40 pm
A Universe of Earths
Planet hunters and science enthusiasts are rejoicing over NASAs latest announcement. Today, a team of astronomers working with data from the K2 mission released a new catalog of potential alien planets. In a press conference held at NASAs Ames Research Center, the team stated that they hadidentified 219 planet candidates, 10 of which are said to be rocky worlds that are in the habitable zones of stars that are similar to the Sunwhich is ayellow dwarf or G dwarf.
In short, it seems that we have 10 new planets that are Earth-like.
In science, Earth-like worlds are loosely defined as terrestrial worlds that have a chemical composition that is similar to our own planet andorbit in a relatively young stars habitable zone (the habitable zone is defined as the orbit around a star where liquid water could theoretically exist on a planets surface).
The team was composed of Kepler research scientists Mario Perez, from the Astrophysics Division of NASAs Science Mission Directorate in Washington, Susan Thompson, from the SETI Institute in California, Benjamin Fulton, from the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, and Courtney Dressing, a NASA Sagan Fellow at Caltech.
To date, there are already 4,034 exoplanet candidates identified by Kepler and 2,335 of these have been confirmed. The 10 new exoplanets addto the 49 Earth-like exoplanets in habitable zones that were previously detected by Kepler, more than 30 of which have been verified.
Perhaps the most interesting of these new finds is KY 7711, which Thompson said is located near its star in an orbit that is very similar to the path that Earth takes around the Sun, meaning that it receives the same amount of heat, although it is approximately 1.3 times larger than our planet.
Typically, exoplanetsfall in one of two categories: super-Earths, which have a radius that is 1.5 times that of the Earth, rocky surfaces, and oftenlittle to no atmosphere; and those that are like mini-Neptunes, which are about twice the Earths radius with thick atmospheres and no rocky surface. Exoplanets falling in between these two categories (i.e. worlds that are Earth-like) are smaller and, thus, much harder to identify. But as this latest find reveals, they are out there.
The Kepler space observatory was launched 8 years ago, in March 2009. Its singular mission was to search for planets orbiting other stars in the hopes of finding alien worldsthat are similar to Earth. Fulton explained that, looking back, they wouldnt have expected to identify roughly 50 Earth-like exoplanets so soon.
Both the original Kepler mission and K2 have significantly contributed in the mission to search for potentially habitable exoplanets. Although not part of the original mission, Kepler also provided the first images of the TRAPPIST-1 system, arguably the most notable exoplanet system recently discovered.
Now, as the K2 reaches the end of its four-year run, Kepler scientists think that we are closing in on the end of an era in exoplanet research. But it also marks the beginning of a new one, with missions like the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) and the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) expected to launch soon. Both the TESS and the JWST would look into exoplanets in ways Kepler isnt able to, identifying new information about their composition and habitability.
Undeniably, though, it was Kepler that made all of these future missions possible. Whats exciting about today is we have taken our telescope and we have counted up how many planets are similar to the Earth in this part of the sky, Thompson said at the press conference. With the data I have, I can now make that count. From there, were going to determine how common other planets are. Are there places we could live in this galaxy besides what we call home?

As Cost Plunges, Solar Power is Ready to Surpass Coal – Futurism
Posted: at 6:40 pm
In Brief Solar power is pacing to make it easier for the world to dump coal once and for all. Within the next four years, solar power will finally be cheaper than coal nearly everywhere, aligning economic and environmental interests. Solar Boom
Solar power is among the easiest ways for individuals to hop on the clean energy generation train. There are many incentives afforded to homeowners who are looking to make the switch to solar power. Even more, it is only getting cheaper to produce, install, and operate this technology. And with the advent of Teslas solar power generating roofing tiles, the process is getting a welcome aesthetic upgrade on top of all of the fantastic vertical integration their technology provides.Click to View Full Infographic
This boom is going to continue pushing solar power to the forefront of clean energy initiatives, as the cost of solar energy is expected to drop 66 percent by 2040. Furthermore, a report from Bloomberg states that in just four years time, solar power will finally be cheaper than coal almost everywhere. The report also claims that by 2040, up to 20 percent of Brazils power will be generated by the sun, and Germany will be at 15 percent.
The economic benefit of switching from coal to solar power will spureven greater growth as coal supporters will no longer be able to deny the cost saving potential of renewable energy. Thankfully, the rest of the world will also benefit from a significant decrease in the amount of fossil fuelsbeing burned, a major contributor to climate change.
The report, generated by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, states that greenhouse gas emissions will peak in 2026. But thanks to the clean energy revolution, these levels will be 4 percent lower in 2040 than they were last year the reigning hottest year on record.
With the decline of fossil fuels, we may likelyalso start seeing the decline of large utility systems. Tesla is a pioneer in this area with its vertical integration of solar panels and solar power storage systems. Their technology is already being used to decrease regional demand on fossil fuel burning plants in Southern California.

Elon Musk Just Claimed That The LA Mayor is Open to His Controversial Boring Company – Futurism
Posted: at 6:40 pm
In Brief It looks like Elon Musk's tunnel project has the support of Los Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti, according to a recent tweet by the Boring Company's CEO and founder. The L.A. mayor looks to Musk's tunnels to improve traffic conditions to LAX.
Often, legislation can either be an express lane or a roadblock (pun intended) for technological innovation that improves transportation. Getting government to support this type of development, such as Elon Musks famous Boring Company, is definitely a step in the right direction.
In a recent tweet, Boring founder and CEO Elon Musk linkedan interview fromABC this past Sunday that featuredLos Angeles mayor Eric Garcetti. In the snippet, Garcetti was talking about potential solutions to improve the abysmal traffic to the citys airport. In particular, he mentioned Musks tunnel solution. Like many other cities have, Id love to see maybe even with the new tunneling technology that people like Elon Musk is looking at, whether we could have a quick and direct route from LAX to Union Station, Garcetti said.
While Musk noted Garcettis comment to be promising, the serial entrepreneur made an additional comment, saying that government permits are often harder to come by than developing technology. In order for a potentially disruptive technology like the Boring Companys earthquake-proof tunnel system which could potentially improve L.A. traffic to become a reality, there must be more effective and efficient policy making.

Last Month Was the Second Hottest May in Recorded History – Futurism
Posted: at 6:40 pm
In Brief May 2017 was the second hottest May in recorded history. This year seems to be continuing the trend of being among the hottest ever.
Summer is rapidly approaching and bringing along with it the highest temperatures of the year, for most of the world. It already seems that this year will be keeping pace with recent years and offering up some of the warmest months in all of recorded history.
This past May has been recorded as the second hottest in history, being beaten only by May 2016, which was 0.93 degrees C (33.7 degrees F) higher than the mean temperature between 1951-1980. Every month this year has ranked in the top three warmest months in recorded history. According to The Weather ChannelFebruary, March and April 2017 ranked as second warmest, while January 2017 finished in third place.
Global climate change is clearly the culprit as human activity continues to contribute to global temperature rises. The Paris Climate Agreement set to address this issue by capping this temperature rise at 2 degrees Celsius. However, experts assert that not even this is enough to save our planet. Even more, there are threats to the effectiveness of even that agreement as the Trump administration recently announced its intent to remove the United States from it.There is still hope, though. Leaders across the United States have defied that intention with promises to uphold the accords, despite the administration. Solar power is also increasingly becoming more economically palatable and will soon become cheaper than coal, eliminating a major source of pollution.

By 2020, There Will Be 4 Devices for Every Human on Earth – Futurism – Futurism
Posted: at 6:40 pm
In Brief By 2020, there will be at least 4 internet-connected devices for every person on Earth comprising the Internet of Things. The growth of the IoT is being powered by more 5G access and falling costs, and will equalize opportunities for more people. Internet Of Things
According to research from Business Insider, more than 24 billion internet-connected devices will be installed around the world by 2020. To give that some context, thats more than four devices for every person on the planet. Together, these devices comprise the Internet of Things (IoT), and its presence is permanently changing our world.Click to View Full Infographic
IoT is the connection between the physical world of humans and the digital world of data (and, to some extent, human ideas). Computers, smartphones, smartwatches, tablets, modern TVs, and wearables are all part of the IoTs that part is intuitive. However, even everyday appliances like thermostats and smoke detectors are now beginning to boast smart capabilities, which establishesthem as part of the IoT. Our entire transportation system, the way we work, and even how we socialize will all change because ofthe IoT.
Although there are many things that together are driving the growth of the IoT, there are a fewbasic trends that are easy to identify. Internet connectivity is expanding and will soon be almost everywhere. For example, in 2018 New York is setbecome the first state to bring broadband access to every household, even in rural areas.Another factor is that mobile technology is improving quickly, and the use ofremote and mobile devices is rapidly becoming more widespread. This means prices are falling, and access is growing. Nokia, for example, is bringing 5G technology to India.
Along these lines, more money is being invested into the IoT as companies and governments alike recognize its importance. The U.S. government invested $8.8 billion in IoT solutions in 2015, up $1.1 from the previous year. At the same time, the price of internet-connected sensors, which most IoT devices rely on, is falling. This means the price of IoT devices are dropping, and more people can afford more devices.
As the IoT grows, security challenges will arise, and possible privacy concerns that could affect our individual rights. However, overall the growth of the IoT will mean more access to opportunity for more people. The best way to respond to it is to plan ahead for these kinds of problems and be ready to tackle them.

Further blow in bid to stop demolition of Scarborough Futurist – The Stage
Posted: at 6:40 pm
A bid to save Scarborough's Futurist Theatre from demolition has failed after a High Court judge ruled the council's decision to tear it down should not be reviewed.
It is the latest in a string of attempts to prevent the now derelict theatre from being demolished, a move voted for by Scarborough councillors in January.
Campaigners trying to save the building subsequently employed a team of solicitors to help try and overturn the decision, in which councillors voted 22 to 21 in favour of demolition.
They were seeking a judicial review into the council's decision to demolish the building. However a High Court judge has now rejected their bid to bring proceedings against the council, meaning the vote will not be scrutinised.
Following the council's decision earlier this year to spend 4 million knocking down the former theatre which has been derelict since 2014 the campaign attempted to get the building listed in order to stave off demolition. However, the application was rejected.
A message on Save the Futurist Theatre's campaign page on Facebook said the group would be meeting with its legal team this week.

Baking Experiments on International Space Station – TrendinTech
Posted: June 18, 2017 at 10:49 am
A future experiment on the International Space Station is taking the recipe instruction allow the dough to rise to all new heights. Scheduled to launch in 2018 during Horizons, Alexander Gersts second science mission as a European Space Agency astronaut, Bake in Space will experiment with a specialty bread dough in a microgravity oven to bake in orbit for the first time ever.
Baking where nobody baked before, said the team behind Bake In Space. Bake In Space seeks to address the scientific and technical challenges relating to the production of fresh bread in space. The Bake in Space team behind the experiment is compromised of former shuttle astronaut Gerhard Thiele, German scientists, and engineers but its not about augmenting the current station crews diet. Instead, researchers are exploring options for future space travel, when spaceflight is available for private tours.
As space tourism takes off and people spend more time in space, we need to allow bread to be made from scratch, said Sebastian Marcu, CEO, and founder of Bake In Space, based in Bremen Germany. The main difficulty with bread in space and the driving force behind the experiment is the tiny, innocuous breadcrumb. While perfectly innocent on Earth, in the microgravity of space, they can cause a laundry list of issues including complications with ventilation filters or electrical system failures. A breadcrumb could even cause health problems if inhaled by an astronaut or space tourist.
In past missions, crumb-less bread solutions, as developed by NASA, have been unappetizing, to say the least. After crews on the Mercury and Gemini missions snuck sandwiches on board, astronaut food supplies included pre-cut bread cubes coated in gelatin to encapsulate the crumbs. Eventually, bread was removed from the equation entirely and replaced with tortillas space shuttle era missions.
Bake in Space will attempt to make a type of German bread roll using a unique dough and a small convection or vacuum oven that requires little power. In a video recorded earlier this year, astronaut Shane Kimbrough explained from aboard the space station, The first thing we need for a sandwich is a piece of bread. Well, up here, we dont have bread like you have on Earth, but we have tortillas. So we use tortillas a lot for our sandwiches.
However, breadcrumbs alone are not the only difficulties Bake in Space will face in testing their new bread dough. The dough must produce a bread that is not only nutritious but also enjoyable to consume and emotionally satisfying, emitting the warm and pleasant smell of freshly baked bread. A goal described on the companys website: Besides [being] a source for nutrition, the smell of fresh bread evokes memories of general happiness and is an important psychological factor. It is a symbol of recreational time and procedure down on Earth.
This is the biggest challenge, agreed Florian Stukenborg with the research firm TTZ Bremerhaven. Similar food-based experiments have already been performed previously for fresh produce grown in a plant chamber called Veggie, and a microgravity coffee makes called ISSPresso. Besides baking bread, Bake in Space also hopes to form a sourdough batter in space, which will later be baked on Earth and become the first space-born loaf sold on the planet.
