LOOK UP! The International Space Station flies over Asheville – WLOS

Posted: July 23, 2017 at 12:48 am

ASHEVILLE, N.C. (WLOS)

The International Space Station (ISS) orbits the Earth and you can see it fly over Asheville--if you know where and when to look.

At 10:48 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, 2017 the ISS will fly over Asheville and be visible as it crosses overhead for about six minutes. (If you're seeing this story ahead of the flyover, a good way to remember to watch the ISS is to set an alarm on your cell phone, if you have one)

If skies are clear in your area, look west-southwest about 10:48 p.m., and wait for the ISS to become visible over the horizon. It will look like a bright, fast-moving star, and will travel overhead and move out of sight into the north-northeast.

The ISS travels at about 17,150 mph as it zooms by, and you can view how many people are aboard it right here.

You can track where the ISS is here.

Japanese robotic camera welcomed aboard space station – Nikkei Asian Review

Posted: at 12:48 am

TOKYO -- Japanese astronauts on the International Space Station have been joined by a floating camera drone developed by the space agency as an important -- and cute -- partner for the crew.

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) started building the JEM Internal Ball Camera, or Int-Ball, in June 2016. The robot was launched into space this past June 4 and now operates in the Japanese Experiment Module as the first-ever working drone on board a spacecraft, according to JAXA.

The Int-Ball measures less than 15cm in diameter -- around the size of a large grapefruit -- thanks to a miniaturized control module with built-in sensors developed by the agency. Bursts of air from fans propel it through the zero-gravity environment, either autonomously or via commands from an earthbound operator.

A central camera sits like a nose between LED "eyes" that light up when images are being shot or an error is encountered. This is meant to make it easy to tell which way the Int-Ball is facing, JAXA says. The drone's internal components and exterior casing were all produced via 3-D printing.

The lack of gravity means that the Int-Ball can get by without the bulky motors needed by drones back home. Instead, stability is key -- if the camera-bot can be blown around by small air currents, its images could turn out blurry or it could get in the crew's way in the narrow spaces where they operate. The Int-Ball's control module allows for the fine control over the propulsion fans needed for this purpose.

The drone's sole job for now is taking pictures and video of astronauts' experiments and onboard equipment, which are sent to Earth in real time. Astronauts typically use hand-held cameras for photography -- a task that eats up 10% of their work time, according to JAXA. Having the Int-Ball take on some of this will save time and effort. The goal is to spare the human crew from having to spend any time on photography.

JAXA is thinking about expanding the Int-Ball's duties to include such tasks as managing supply inventories and surveying onboard problems. Adding voice recognition would let nearby crew members give commands. The little ball could become a trusty astronaut's companion like the "Gundam" science fiction franchise's Haro spherical robot, to which the Int-Ball bears a striking resemblance.

Genealogy society offering ‘Which DNA Test is For You?’ session on Tuesday – Terre Haute Tribune Star

Posted: at 12:46 am

The Wabash Valley Genealogy Society on Tuesday will offer a free, public program to help others better understand DNA testing and what is involved in deciphering some of the intriguing family connections found through DNA matches.

The program, Which DNA Test is Right For Me?,is set for 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the lower level conference rooms at the Vigo County Public Library, Seventh and Poplar streets.

Presenter andgenealogy society presidentTim Phipps is an acknowledged DNA expert as it relates to genealogy and family history.During his presentation, Phipps will give an overview of the types of DNA tests that are available, what each test can reveal, and which tests are offered by the major DNA testing companies.

A third generation native of Terre Haute, Phipps works in private business management but completed his bachelor of arts degree with a double major in history and religion and his masters with a concentration in American religious history at Olivet Nazarene University.

In addition to his work in genealogy and DNA, Phipps spent nearly 10 years researching the history of the Civil War in and around Parke County, where his Phipps family settled in the 1830s. He has given several presentations on his historical work about the political turmoil of the Parke County home during the American Civil War.

Dog owners can now give pets a DNA test to see if their pooch overeats – Mirror.co.uk

Posted: at 12:46 am

Pet owners are getting their furry friends DNA tested to discover if they have a deadly disease, what their ancestral background is and even discover if they have a GREEDY gene.

Costing about 40 for a postal test, where you swab your pets cheek with a little brush, dogs are the domestic animals most commonly screened but it is also possible to get your cats DNA examined.

The Animal Health Trust (AHT), a charity which fights disease and injury in animals, offers over 30 DNA tests, reinvesting profits for further research.

Cathryn Mellersh, head of canine genetics at the organisation, explained: Our focus is on health and preventing disease. For dog breeders, having their animals DNA tested, which you only need to do once in their lifetime, is responsible because it means they can make sensible breeding decisions.

Vets use the DNA test to help diagnose what the dog has wrong with it, so they might find out a dog has two copies of the mutation that causes a particular eye disease.

For owners, it can be useful to know that the dog is going to develop a disease. If my dog has the inherited glaucoma gene its better to have regular eye tests so the early signs can be spotted.

Cathryn says DNA testing is continually developing and the AHTs brand new test shows a glimpse of the future for dog owners.

Our most recent DNA test is for a mutation that has been shown to make a dog more interested in food, more greedy and more likely to become obese, she says. Think labradors and flat-coated retrievers.

Were aiming that test really at the dog owner and in particular the puppy buyer. If you know your puppy has two copies of that mutation, on average they are about 4kg heavier than dogs without the mutation.

You can be aware throughout that dogs life they are likely to be extra greedy, so you can keep an eye on its treats and make sure it gets lots of extra exercise.

Pet DNA testing can also be undertaken for more lighthearted reasons.

If youve got a dog from a rescue centre that looks a bit like a Labrador you can have its DNA tested for about 50 or 60, Cathryn explains. They will estimate for you what its breed make-up is.

I have a crossbreed and they were able to tell me one parent was probably a German Shepherd and the other parent was a Greyhound crossed with a Saluki. But it depends how much of a Heinz 57 your dog is, that will determine how much information they can give you.

A new company in the States, Embark, will tell you where the dogs ancestors came from. Certain breeds were developed in Asia, some Africa. DNA has quite distinct signatures.

Developments in DNA testing for pets can even help to advance human genetic research.

Sometimes the research that we do points us to genes that may be responsible for the same disease in humans, explains Cathryn.

A couple of years ago we found a mutation that caused a neurological disease in Parson Russell Terriers and Jack Russell Terriers.

Since we published our findings people working on humans have found mutations in the same gene cause the same disease in humans.

The Secret of Junk DNA: Study Confirms Human Genome is ‘Product of Evolution’ – Sputnik International

A new study reveals at least three quarters of human genome is comprised of the so called junk DNA, seemingly confirming the fact that the human genome is the product of evolution and therefore not artificially created by some outside intelligent force.

Dan Graur, Professor ofthe Department ofBiology & Biochemistry atthe University ofHouston and author ofthe study, told Radio Sputnik that his research was based onthe work ofthe late Herman Muller, geneticist and Nobel laureate who created the concept ofthe mutation load.

"The mutation load essentially means that every functional part inyour body or inyour genome can experience changes that will be bad forthem. Like inlife, every functional entity, if left unchecked, will deteriorate and cease working you cannot leave your television onand expect that ina million years it will still work. The enemies ofgenes are mutations, and the vast majority ofmutations that happen inthe functional portion ofthe genome are deleterious," he explained.

According toGraur, humanity overcomes this problem by making more children toreplace the population size, thus compensating forthe loss ofpeople who die beforereaching the reproductive age.

"Now if the entire genome is functional, the number ofdeleterious mutations would be so great that it would require each person inthe world tohave more children thanthere are galaxies inthe universe So the only escape fromthis mutation load paradox is toassume that not the entire genome is functional, and according tomy calculations based onmutation rate and population size and genome size, the maximum that is possible tobe functional is about25 percent, more reasonably in-between 10 and 15," Graur said.

He also remarked that while his research is about "basic science" and that he doesnt care aboutits practical application, the study serves asproof that "our genomes are the product ofevolution."

"The main impact ofthis study is toshow that our genomes are the product ofevolution and not designed byan intelligent designer, because no intelligent designer would make anything so badly designed," Graur explained.

However, it also appears that it is this very large amount ofjunk DNA withinour genome is what makes us human, the scientist remarked.

"I suppose that if everything was functional, first ofall we wouldnt be human, so we would be something more similar tobacteria. We would be able tomultiply very rapidly and be able tosustain mutations. The only human who would have a 100-percent genome will be one inwhich mutations do not occur," Graur said, adding that it is unlikely tohappen duringhis lifetime.

Olympic Swimmer Dara Torres Offers Advice to People With … – TeenVogue.com

Posted: at 12:45 am

This story was published on The Mighty by Erin Migdol , a platform for people facing health challenges to share their stories and connect.

For many people with psoriasis , a flare-up means going outside in shorts or a swimsuit seems out of the question. But take it from five-time Olympic swimmer Dara Torres, whos been forced to confront this dilemma over and over since her diagnosis with psoriasis 25 years ago you can show off your beach body in the summer, and you should if you want to.

Torres, 50, is advocating for psoriatic disease this summer as part of the sponsored [Show More of You](http://www.showmoreofyou.com( campaign. She told The Mighty she first began noticing red, itchy patches while she was training for her third Olympics, the 1992 games in Barcelona. I was in a swimsuit and everyone could see everything, she said. I was embarrassed by it and put lotion on it and thought it would go away, but it got worse.

She was soon diagnosed with plaque psoriasis, which flares up when she gets stressed. Back then, she said people werent as educated about psoriasis and psoriatic diseases as they are today, and she felt self-conscious knowing it could flare when she was stressed about an upcoming meet.

No one had [the] nerve to come up and say anything. But you can tell when people are looking at you, and I felt like people were looking at me. Back then, people thought they would get it, Torres said. People thought if they touched me and it hit their skin they would get it or if they were in the pool with me, then they would get it, too.

But those misconceptions simply arent true psoriasis is not contagious and is actually common (approximately 7.5 million Americans have psoriasis, and up to 30 percent of those may also eventually develop psoriatic arthritis ). Its also treatable with the help of a dermatologist.

Thats why Torres is partnering with Celgenes Show More of You campaign, which seeks to raise awareness of psoriatic disease and show people with psoriasis they can still be their true selves this summer. Torres said she became more confident in her body when she realized, as she says, my business suit is my swimsuit.

I couldnt not be confident, I had to follow my dreams and continue swimming. I couldnt not go to the Olympics because I had psoriasis, Torres said.

And she has a message for others who might feel embarrassed or ashamed of their psoriasis this summer: talk with a dermatologist about treatment options, and get out there.

[The campaign] is sharing other people with psoriasis stories and saying hey, its OK. We want to give them confidence to know that they can go out show more of you is really a great name, Torres said. Everyone in the world knows bodies come in all shapes and sizes and you shouldnt be discriminated against for that.

A New Gene-Altering Cancer Treatment Shows ‘Astonishing’ Rate of Success – Seeker

Posted: at 12:44 am

The treatment is for an uncommon type of leukemia, called B-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia, that affects mainly children and young adults, according to the Times. The success rate of the treatment that was seen in a recent clinical trial was "astonishing," said Lee Greenberger, chief scientific officer of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Greenberger was not involved directly in the research of the new therapy, but the LLS has contributed significant funding toward the work.

Leukemia is cancer of white blood cells, and it starts in the bone marrow, the soft material found in the center of bones that produces blood cells. [11 Surprising Facts About the Immune System]

Simply put, the new treatment works by rewiring a person's own immune cells to fight cancer. To do this, doctors first remove millions of the immune cells, called T cells, from a patient's blood, Greenberger told Live Science. Normally, T cells help destroy infected or cancerous cells.

These T cells are sent to a lab to be purified, and then are genetically engineered, Greenberger said. Scientists mix the cells with a virus that works as "vector" to insert a bit of genetic material into the cells' DNA. (Viruses commonly insert their DNA into living cells.) In this case, the vector that's used is an inactive form of HIV. After 15 to 25 days during which the cells have started to produce the new protein that is encoded by the DNA, as well as grow and multiply the "gene-altered" T cells are infused back into the patient.

"It's basically a one-time therapy," Greenberger said.

The genetic material that the virus inserted into the T cells makes the cells do two things when they are put back into the patient's body, Greenberger said. First, the T cells produce an antibody that sits on the cell's surface, he said. This antibody enables the T cells to recognize the cancer cells. Also, the new genetic material activates the T cells so that, when they arrive at the tumor cells, they not only recognize them but also latch on and destroy them. [10 Do's and Don'ts to Reduce Your Risk of Cancer]

Once in the body, these "hunt and destroy" T cells multiply, so the patient ends up with an "army" of them in the blood, Greenberger said.

The entire process of the T cells killing the cancer cells lasts a couple of weeks, Greenberger said. But when the treatment is working, it can cause some serious side effects, he noted. The side effects include a condition called cytokine release syndrome, which can cause fevers, and another condition called neurotoxicity, which can cause symptoms such as disorientation and an inability to speak.

These side effects start as the T cells begin to kill the tumor cells, and when the tumor cells are depleted, the symptoms calm down, Greenberger said. During the entire process, however, the patient stays in the hospital and is monitored very carefully. In some cases, patients need intensive care.

In addition, some normal, noncancerous cells also carry the protein that the T cells are engineered to recognize. That means that the T cells will also kill these healthy B cells. "But people will survive without those [B cells]," Greenberger said. They do, however, need to get regular infusions of "immune globulins," which help to boost the immune system.

The FDA panel's recommendation was based on the results of a clinical trial run by the drug company Novartis, The New York Times reported. In the trial, 63 patients were given the new therapy, and 52 of them, or 83 percent, went into remission meaning the cancer went away. The other 11 patients died.

Greenberger noted that the treatment is being recommended for leukemia patients who have no other options left. And based on the results of the research, "it works," he said. The FDA panel recommended that it be approved specifically for patients whose cancer has not responded to other treatments or whose cancer returned after treatment.

So far, the patients who were successfully treated with the new therapy sometime between April 2015 and August 2016 haven't had their cancer return and haven't developed any serious side effects, Greenberger said. Still, they'll need to be monitored over the long term to see if anything changes. Novartis plans on monitoring the patients for 15 years.

‘Are Traps Gay?’ Question Sparks Furor At YouTube And Gaming Event – The Daily Caller

Posted: at 12:44 am

Coxcon, a U.K.-based gaming event taking place over the weekend, has become a lightning rod of controversy after an attendee was ejected for asking organizers an offensive question during a Q&A session. Someone asked the events founder, Jesse Cox, if traps are gay. The fallout from the question overshadowed the event in its entirety, which was to provide YouTubers and gaming streamers a platform to reach out to their fans.

In Internet lingo, a trap is a transgender person who manages to pass as a woman. To ask the question, are traps gay? is a popular, if politically incorrect, meme on social mediaYouTubers and other streamers are often asked for their thoughts about it. Progressive social justice warriors consider the question, as well as the term trap, to be both offensive and bigoted towards transgender people.

At Coxcon, most of the panels audience reacted in laughter upon hearing the question. Their amusement at the joke was not shared by Jesse Cox, who responded in shock. When the question was once again repeated, he remained visibly offended.

Popular video game YouTuber John TotalBiscuit Bain, who is another of the conventions organizers, escalated the issue by issuing a public condemnation of the person who asked the joke.

We condemn the transphobic question asked at the Coxcon panel, he wrote on Twitter. If anyone knows the identity of the person please inform a member of staff.

Following his call for someone to snitch, Bain discovered the identity of the thought-criminal and removed him from the convention.

The person has been identified and is being removed from the event, wrote the YouTuber, who engaged with his detractors by telling them their opinions were of no consequence.

We will not tolerate that bullshit in our event, ever, he said.

Bain followed up by stating that he donated the cost of the ejected persons ticket to a U.K.-based LGBT organization called the Albert Kennedy Trust, adding that Internet edgelords are not welcome in the event we paid to host and if you think any other opinion matters you are delusional. Thanks.

Its not at all surprising that the kind of people that would oppose our action are the kind of people we wouldnt want here anyway, he concluded.

In 2015, Bain, who now appears to be crusading for politically correct speech, mocked the concept of transgender identityin a tweet thatas many have pointed outaged poorly.

John TotalBiscuit Bains criticismcomes as a surprise to many on social media, who respected him for his willingness to say it like it is, and for his open support of the GamerGate movement for ethics in video game journalism.

Ian Miles Cheong is a journalist and outspoken media critic. You can reach him through social media at @stillgray on Twitter.
