Investigator: Driver part of larger human-smuggling scheme – The Denver Post

Posted: at 3:41 pm

SAN ANTONIO Investigators believe a truck driver accused in the deaths of 10 people found inside a packed, sweltering tractor-trailer is part of a larger organization involved in human smuggling that authorities are trying to identify and dismantle, a U.S. immigration official said.

Some of the 29 identified survivors told authorities they hired smugglers who brought them across the U.S. border, loaded them onto trucks that took them to the tractor-trailer, and marked them with different colored tape to identify them to various smugglers who would be picking them up after the tractor-trailer reached its destination.

Were certainly not stopping at looking at the driver. Were trying to investigate and identify the different cogs, the stash houses, the other members, where the money came from, Shane Folden, special agent in charge of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcements Homeland Security Investigations office in San Antonio, told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The driver, James Matthew Bradley Jr., 60, of Clearwater, Florida, is facing charges of illegally transporting immigrants for financial gain, resulting in death. Bradley could face the death penalty if convicted. Authorities allege he drove a trailer full of immigrants from South Texas that was discovered in the parking lot of a Walmart in San Antonio early Sunday morning.

Folden said charging Bradley is just the first step in the case as investigators work to find others involved in the scheme, including those responsible for facilitating money transfers and bringing the immigrants across the border.

The ultimate goal is to dismantle the complete organization. You dont get there by only focusing on one aspect. You have to look at potential targets and potential related locations, both north and south, he said.

U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar from Texas said he was informed by law enforcement that the tractor-trailer cleared a Border Patrol checkpoint Saturday night, about two hours before it was discovered, roughly 29 miles (47 kilometers) north of the border on Interstate 35 near Laredo. Cuellar said he didnt know whether the immigrants were loaded into the truck before or after it crossed the checkpoint.

U.S. authorities are still trying to determine how many people were inside the tractor-trailer because some fled before police arrived, Folden said.

Thirteen people who rode in the trailer remained hospitalized Tuesday in San Antonio, said ICE spokesman Greg Palmore. He declined to say how many were critical or in life-threatening condition. Officials said at least 29 people survived the smuggling attempt.

Delmin Daro Lpez Colomo, 23, a Guatemalan survivor who remained hospitalized, said the migrants in the tractor-trailer were delivered by various different smugglers, according to Cristy Andrino, the consul of Guatemala in McAllen, Texas.

Adan Lara Vega, 27, a migrant from Mexico who survived the smuggling attempt, told the AP on Monday that they boarded the truck on a Laredo street Saturday night for the two-hour trip to San Antonio. He said the trailer was already full of people, but it was so dark he couldnt tell how many.

At least some of the survivors are likely to become witnesses and receive consideration to remain in the United States to testify, Folden said.

Its likely that most if not all of the survivors will be allowed to stay in the country to help authorities in their investigation, said Jeff Vaden, a former federal prosecutor who helped oversee the prosecution of a 2003 smuggling attempt in Victoria, Texas, in which 19 people died.

Vaden said many of the more than 50 immigrants who survived that attempt were able to identify the people who harbored them or transported them or to whom they paid or spoke. Thats what enabled the government to put together the larger smuggling case above just the driver. Just like in any crime, the victims are critical witnesses. Vaden is now a partner at the Houston law firm of Bracewell LLP.

Jacob Monty, an immigration lawyer in Houston, said the help survivors give to authorities could lead to permanent residency.

Bradley, the driver of the truck found in San Antonio, remained jailed Tuesday. He had his commercial driving privileges for a truck driver suspended by Florida three months before Sundays deadly smuggling attempt, officials said Tuesday.

Court records show Bradley had been repeatedly cited for violating federal motor carrier safety regulations in Iowa dating back to 1995. At least two of the tickets were for logging more hours than allowed.

Federal regulators said they are also conducting an investigation into an Iowa trucking company whose name was on the trailer. Brian Pyle, owner of Pyle Transportation, said the trailer had been sold on May 10 to an individual in Mexico, and Bradley was working as an independent contractor to drive it to Brownsville, Texas, to carry out the sale.

Its unclear what will happen to one of the migrants who died, identified as 19-year-old Frank Guisseppe Fuentes. His parents, who live in Maryland and are in the U.S. illegally, havent yet told Guatemalan officials what they want done with his body. Andrino, the Guatemalan consul, said they may fear agents could come after them if they claim their son.

Plummeting Sperm Counts Could Result In Human Extinction, Doctor Warns – HuffPost UK

Posted: at 3:41 pm

A doctor has warned that rapidly declining sperm counts could result in humans becoming extinct.

Dr Hagai Levine led a team of researchers who analysed the sperm counts of men from North America, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Results showed they halved between 1973 and 2011.

Dr Levine told the BBC: If we will not change the ways that we are living and the environment and the chemicals that we are exposed to, I am very worried about what will happen in the future.

Eventually we may have a problem, and with reproduction in general, and it may be the extinction of the human species.

The study suggested the rate of decline in sperm counts among men living in Western countries is continuing and possibly even increasing.Meanwhile, there was no significant decline in South America, Asia and Africa.

Having a low sperm count can make it more difficult to conceive naturally, although successful pregnancies can still occur.

Some experts were critical of the new studys findings, noting various flaws, and added it may be too soon to draw such conclusions about human extinction.

But writing in the journalHuman Reproduction Update, the studys authors said further research is urgently needed to get to the bottom of why mens sperm counts are declining so much.

According to the NHS, problems with sperm, including a low sperm count and problems with sperm quality, are quite common in the UK - affecting one in three couples who are struggling to get pregnant.

The studys authors linked a range of lifestyle and environmental factors to the problem including:endocrine disrupting chemicals, pesticides, diet, stress, smoking and obesity.

Dr Helen Webberley, who runs the online healthcare serviceMy Web Doctor, said the results of the research were alarming but added there are various lifestyle changes men can make to improve sperm health.

Few of these will come as much of a surprise: maintaining a healthy diet, limiting alcohol consumption, stopping smoking and taking regular exercise, she told HuffPost UK.

Having a clear overview of your reproductive health can be useful and relevant tests - such as testosterone levels and knowing your sperm count - can provide a clearer indication of the situation.

She added:The environmental factors are worrying and feel a little out of our control, so more research in this area would be good. There are new studies ongoing into whether anti-oestrogen medications that we use in the treatment of female breast cancer, or even the female fertility drug, Clomid, can help when used in male patients - and we have seen some encouraging results.

Having said that, prevention is always better than cure and we, as a nation, need to accept that we can have a positive impact on our reproductive health by adjusting our lifestyle.

Professor Geeta Nargund, medical director ofCREATE Fertility, said more needs to be done to educate men and boys about their fertility.

The findings of this study are extremely important and raise public health concerns when it comes to male fertility, she told HuffPost UK.

It is about time that we start educating boys and men about the effects of smoking, obesity, exposure to pesticides and plastics, and sedentary lifestyle on their reproductive health.

We also need to address the possible effects of maternal smoking and exposure to hormones in pregnancy, during a critical window of foetal testicular development.

I urge the Department of Education to include fertility education as part of the curriculum in secondary schools, as it can help raise awareness and prevent future infertility.

10 Things You May Not Know About Your Fertility

1. Your fertility is mostly determined by genetics, which influences how many eggs you are born with. Doctors believe that the number of eggs you have at birth determines the length of time you will remain fertile. At birth, women have about two million eggs in their ovaries. For every egg ovulated during your reproductive life, about 1,000 eggs undergo programmed cell death. Other things, such as smoking cigarettes and certain types of chemotherapy, can accelerate egg cell death and promote an earlier menopause.

China’s New Quantum Communication Network Will Be Unhackable – Futurism

Posted: at 3:40 pm

In Brief China's new quantum communication network in the city of Jinan is expected to change cryptography for the better. As computers become more powerful, current encryption methods become less reliable. Quantum cryptography will be a key technology for addressing this. Securing the Internet

For a country notorious for its restrictive internet policies, China seems to be taking the lead on developing next-generation internet communications. The city of Jinan is set to become the hub of this quantum communications network that will boost Beijing-Shanghai internet when the project is launched by the end of August. It is set to become the worlds first unhackable internet communications network.

Unlike encryption methods that hide the key under difficult mathematical problems, quantum communication and cryptographyuse entanglementto do the trick. Concretely, the key is embedded in photons (light particles) and sent ahead of the encrypted message a method called quantum key distribution (QKD).

Communication becomes unhackable this way because any attempt to intercept the key would be obviousto the sender and the intendedrecipient. Whats even more impressive is that China has the technology to extend quantum communications up to 400 kilometers (about 250 miles), as previously demonstrated in a quantum cryptography research in Hefei.

As technology becomes increasingly more complex, computers are becomingincreasingly more powerful. This puts current encryption methods in danger, as number-crunching becomes easier with powerful computing power. Number-based keys need to be prolonged and constantly updated to keep up. QKD potentially solves all of this.

Yet, for the most part, it seems China is leaving the West behind in pursuit of this technology. For a long time people simply didnt think it was needed, Myungshik Kim from Imperial College, London, told the BBC. The mathematical difficulty of the current coding system was so high that it was not thought necessary to implement the new technology.

Recent security breeches and hacks, of course, reveal the error of this thinking. Thats one reason why China is pursuing quantum communication, but the tech has a number of other possible applications as well.

We plan to use the [Jinan] network for national [defense], finance, and other fields, and hope to spread it out as a pilot that if successful, can be used across China and the whole world, Zhou Fei, Jinan Institute of Quantum Technology assistant director, previously told the Financial Times.

An Airline Just Started Using Ethereum Blockchain to Issue Tickets – Futurism

Posted: at 3:40 pm

In Brief On Monday, Russian airline S7 began using a blockchain platform for their ticket sales. The move is evidence of both Russia's interest in the technology and a worldwide shift toward a future supported by blockchain.

Russian magazine Kommersanthas reported that the airlineS7began selling tickets using an Ethereum blockchainon Monday. The countrys largest private financial institution,Alfa-Bank, is supporting the move, which was made to simplifypayments and decrease settlement times between airlines and agents a process that usually takes two weeks.

The decision may have been made to get ahead of another Russian airline, Aeroflot, which recently released a request for proposals on how to incorporate cryptocurrencies into their own services.

S7s decision to utilize Ethereum represents two wider trends in the world of blockchain. First, Russias interest in the technology. This is reflected by the central banktesting an Ethereum-based blockchain systemand Vladimir Putin optimistically announcing that blockchain is essentially the foundation for creating brand new business models at the St. Petersburg Economic Forum.

Second, the move shows a worldwide increase in the integration of blockchain into everyday transactions. The system has been adopted by shipping companies such as Maerskand retailers like Walmart to keep track of shipments, and if S7s integration is successful, citizens outside of Russia could soon find themselves booking their own travel on the blockchain.

Disclosure: Several members of the Futurism team, including the editors of this piece, are personal investors in a number of cryptocurrency markets. Their personal investment perspectives have no impact on editorial content.

New Action Movie Stars The Rock and SiriReally – Futurism

Posted: at 3:40 pm

In Brief Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Apple's Siri have teamed up to make a "movie" that is actually an extended ad depicting the utility of the latest iteration of Siri, integrated with everything from Lyft to FaceTime to iTunes.

If youve read the title, then youre probably aware of an upcoming film circling an unlikely duo. The movie is called The Rock x Siri: Dominate The Day, and is actually an ad styled after the kind of crazy, possibly comedic action move Dwayne Johnson has become famous for. Like last years extended commercial collaboration between Taylor Swift and Apple Music, this project is Apple plus celebrity mojo plus, this time around, Siri.

According to Johnsons Facebook post, the movie is the dopest and funnest, and Siri is the greatest co-star of all time. She certainly received top billing on the poster no photo though. Check out the full movie here:

The Dominate the Day theme plays on Johnsons unlikely all-talented persona depicting him as a chef, fashion designer, fresco painter, jumbo-jet pilot, musician, and bonsai artist all with the help of Siris FaceTime-, iTunes-, and Lyft-integrated help. The idea is that you too can accomplish an unbelievable list of things with the help of Siri, even if youre not The Rock.

Dominating your actual day is optional.

Here’s what the Lime Street facade will look like – including Futurist memories – Liverpool Echo

Posted: at 3:40 pm

Heres what the artwork on the Lime Street development could look like and it includes memories of the famous Futurist cinema.

Developer Ion is building a hotel, student flats and a row of shops and restaurants on the land between The Crown and The Vines. The plan was controversial because the historic Futurist was demolished to make way for it.

But that cinemas history will form part of a striking quantum timeline, designed by Anthony Brown, that will stretch across the Lime Street facade.

Mr Brown has designed 11 panels based on Lime Streets history.

They cover topics from the Futurist and other long-lost cinemas to the famous Maggie May and the Guinness Clock that once stood opposite Lime Street station.

Theres even a panel about the old Yankee Bar, famed for its miniature Statue of Liberty. The Yankee was also cleared to make way for the Lime Street scheme.

Mr Brown is best known for the 100 portraits of famous Merseyside people that he created for Liverpools 800th birthday in 2007.

Speaking about his Lime Street work, he said: With this work, our intention is to capture and reflect the history while commemorating the development of a truly unique street and one of the most important areas in the city of Liverpool.

We have created an accessible Quantum Timeline using illustrative graphic images and archived text to immortalise the development, buildings, business, people and heritage of Lime Street which was formally known as Limekiln Lane.

It will serve to forever mark and display what was as we celebrate what comes next.

Ion, formerly known as Neptune Developments, was behind the Mann Island development. Mr Browns painting have previously been exhibited there.

Ion managing director Steve Parry, managing director of Ion, commented: "Lime Street has seen many transformations in its history yet it has always reflected Liverpool life.

As one of the most important gateways to the city, we have an opportunity to reflect the vibrancy and history of the street on the elevations of the building.

Neo-Futurists’ new show serves up plenty of ‘Food’ for thought – Chicago Sun-Times

Posted: at 3:40 pm

When rehearsals began for The Food Show, one of the first things writer-director Dan Kerr-Hobert asked his five-member cast to do was demonstrate their favorite way to prepare eggs. These ranged from a perfect omelette and an elegant poached egg to the less ambitious half-scramble in a bowl in a microwave.

He says the way people cook eggs is a kind of handwriting, and felt the exercise would be a perfect starting point to introduce the actors to the ideas he was aiming to illustrate in this new Neo-Futurist show.

The Food Show When: To Sept. 2 Where: The Neo-Futurists at Metropolitan Brewing, 3057 N. Rockwell Tickets: $10-$25 Info: neofuturists.org

It was a good way to start the conversation about how our identities affect our relationship to food and visa versa, he says. After each egg was made we all talked about small ways in which the process revealed things about the person cooking. Some text came out of that which is now in the show, but it also gave us a baseline sense of each persons relationship to food.

With his new play, Kerr-Hobert wants to get people thinking and talking about food via a wide range of ideas from foods cultural connections and the significance of family recipes passed down to social issues and foods impact on the environment. And, yes, food will be cooked on stage as the actors ruminate about these ideas and more.

The Food Show was born out of an ongoing conversation Kerr-Hobert, a member of The Neo-Futurists, had with his cousin and Neo-Futurist alum Caitlin Stainken. Both were interested in ideas about the connections people have with food and identity and had talked about opening a restaurant but creating a show about food was the idea that won out. (However, Stainken has since moved to Montana, had a baby and wasnt available to continue with the shows creation.)

Kerr-Hobert says the show is not solely aimed at foodies: The goal is to look at the emotional relationship we all have with food.

Dan Kerr-Hobert | SUPPLIED PHOTO

He adds, one of the core themes in the show is the idea of food and inheritance: Where did we get our ideas about food? What ideas have we inherited? And why do we choose to keep them or give them up?

In 2009, the Neo-Futurists partnered with Metropolitan Brewery to stage Sean Benjamin and Steve Mosquedas Beer, which was directed by Kerr-Hobert at the brewerys Ravenswood location. The partnership continues with The Food Show, which debuts at Metropolitans new Avondale location. The cast features Oliver Camacho, Bilal Dardai, Tif Harrison, Spencer Meeks and Kyra Simms, with music composed by Mucca Pazza artistic director Ronnie Kuller.

As the 70-minute show unfolds, the cast is busy with tasks from making butter and pasta to searing salmon and baking cookies while also pondering the current issues related to food.

This is the first time Kerr-Hobert has created a Neo-Futurist show that he isnt performing in. It was a new and interesting challenge, he says. Instead of simply using the stories from his own life, he says he had to discover new ways to bring his ideas into the script.

He began by interviewing the cast, each of whom had a drastically different history with food. These personal narratives are woven into the piece.

Ensemble member Bilal Dardai (the creator of that aforementioned half scramble in a bowl) grew up eating a mix of ethnic Indian dishes and American cuisine (my mom was open to trying different things). His role in the show evolved around his ethnic background but also around the fact hes the only parent in the cast.

We discussed ideas about not only my background but also about what you feed a small child with a food allergy and how you handle that, Dardai says referring to his own experience with his son.

Kerr-Hobert hopes the show provides a space where people can have a fulfilling and entertaining meditation on food and the issues surrounding it. Do we keep our inherited ways or do we make changes, he asks. For me, the show is about mindfulness and a chance to think about questioning inheritance and whether or not we need to change.

I try and eat ethically but I definitely dont think enough about where all the food is coming from. I know those things have an impact on the world. There are a lot of questions about why we do what we do when it comes to food. We want to get people thinking about these issues.

Ground Control to Major Google: Space Station Street View Is Here – Scientific American

Posted: at 12:53 am

Forget views of side streets and poorly parked cars why not explore the International Space Station (ISS) instead? Earlier this week Google Maps released its first-ever Street View in space, and now, Earthlings can virtually navigate through astronauts home away from home. Because no one could drive a van and camera around the ISS, Thomas Pesquet, a European Space Agency astronaut, collaborated with NASA and Google to take images with DSLR cameras already aboard the craft. The tunnel-like interior is filled with wall-to-wall cables and equipment, so navigation is trickier than on Earth. But a scattering of helpful tags identify locations and equipment that people unfamiliar with astronaut life might not recognize. Yours truly ended up in a bathroom on one of her first navigational clicks, but maybe you will have better luck.

If the blurbs of information only increase your curiosity about daily life on the ISS, NASA astronaut Suni Williams explains all about sleeping, eating and manipulating that strange toilet in this video from 2014, below. Pair her explanations with the immersive Street View and maybe you will feel like an astronaut yourself.

Wednesday evening is a good opportunity to watch the International Space Station over Richmond – Richmond.com

Posted: at 12:53 am

Wednesday evening should be the best time of the week for getting a look at the International Space Station over Richmond.

The station should be visible starting at 8:56 p.m. as a bright dot above the west-southwest horizon, between Jupiter and the setting crescent moon. It will peak three minutes later as it crosses through the Ursa Major constellation, or Big Dipper, and set in the northeast sky by 9:02 p.m.

Though the sky may feature a few clouds, it ought to be clear enough to catch the bright reflection of the sun by then, slightly below our horizon off the stations solar panels.

There are a few other opportunities to spot the station this week, but this one will be the highest and brightest for our area until the middle of August.
