Cyborg Bacteria Could Be the Key to Commercially Viable Artificial Photosynthesis – Futurism
Posted: August 25, 2017 at 3:31 am
In BriefIn an effort to improve the efficiency of naturalphotosynthesis, a researcher at the University of California,Berkeley, has created cyborg bacteria. These bacteria were trainedto grow and cover their bodies with tiny semiconductor nanocrystalsthat act as efficient solar panels for harvesting sunlight. Cyborg Bacteria
Although most life on Earth relies upon photosynthesis as its source of energy, the process has a weak link: chlorophyll. Plants and other organisms use the green pigment to harvest sunlight during photosynthesis, but it is rather inefficient. To that end, scientists have been searching for ways to upgrade natural photosynthesis sohumans would be able to capture and use energy from the Sun more efficiently.
Now, Kelsey K. Sakimoto, a researcher at Peidong Yangs lab at the University of California, Berkeley, has come up with a new alternative to natural photosynthesis: cyborg bacteria that were trained to cover themselves in solar panels that are much more efficient than chlorophyll at converting sunlight into useful compounds.
Rather than rely on inefficient chlorophyll to harvest sunlight, Ive taught bacteria how to grow and cover their bodies with tiny semiconductor nanocrystals, Sakimotosaid in a press release. These nanocrystals are much more efficient than chlorophyll and can be grown at a fraction of the cost of manufactured solar panels.
To produce his cyborg bacteria, Sakimoto fed them the amino acid cysteine and the element cadmium. The bacteria then synthesized cadmium sulfide (CdS) nanoparticles, which efficiently absorb light, functioning as solar panels on the bacterias surfaces. The new hybrid organism, called M. thermoacetica-CdS, produces useful acetic acid from light energy, water, and CO2 at a rate that outperforms any sources of natural photosynthesis.
Today, Sakimoto is presenting his work at the 254th National Meeting and Exposition of the American Chemical Society (ACS).
Humanity is facing an ever-growing need for alternatives to fossil fuels as we face down the consequences of greenhouse gas emissionsand a rapidly increasing population that requires energy to sustain.
Artificial photosynthesisisnot a new concept, and a system that requires only sunlight and simple organic chemicals to generate renewable energy cheaply and cleanly is understandably highly desirable.
While some limited progress has been made in this area, until now, no proposed solution has been nearly efficient enough to warrant commercial use.
Sakiomotos bacteria, however, operate at an efficiency of more than 80 percent and are both self-replicating and self-regenerating, making this a zero-waste technology with multiple uses. Once covered with these tiny solar panels, the bacteria can synthesize food, fuels, and plastics, all using solar energy, he explained. These bacteria outperform natural photosynthesis.
While he does acknowledge that more research is needed, Sakiomotois hopefully that his cyborg bacteria could prove to be a viable alternative to fossil fuels, helping the world produce energy more cheaply and cleanly.

A New Blockchain Platform is Taking on Ethereum – Futurism
Posted: at 3:31 am
In BriefNEO is going head-to-head with Ethereum, claiming that itsplatform provides more options for scripting smart contracts andenhanced reliability. New Kid on the Blockchain
Cryptocurrency is on the riseand, as a result, theres no shortage of companies looking to establish themselves as an essential part of the trading process. In addition to organizations fielding new coins, there are firms that handle other pieces of infrastructure, like Blockchain specialist NEO (formerly known as AntShares).
NEOs biggest competition is currently Ethereum, the blockchain platform behind the prosperous Ether token. Both offer support for programming languages Vitalik Buterin, who originally conceived Ethereum, has felt that the absence of such support has been a major detriment to cryptocurrency but the group behind NEO maintains that its implementation has several advantages.
Smart contracts are automated agreements between traders that can call upon all kinds of different checks and triggers, ranging from a particular date to the balance of a particular account. NEO allows developers to write smart contracts and other projects using familiar programming languages like .NET and Java, with plans to support Python, Go, and JS in the future.
NEO also diverts from the likes of Bitcoin and Ethereum in eschewing the need for anonymity. The platform uses a digital identity system thats intended to help it integrate with the real-world economy. Digital identity is expected to give NEO a major advantage as it attempts to spur adoption in its origin country China.
Bitcoin and Ethereum use proof-of-work (POW) to validate transactions, but NEO instead uses a delegated Byzantine Fault Tolerance (dBFT) consensus method.
POW has strong availability, but it also has a big disadvantage, because it cannot ensure finality. Forks and lone blocks will occur easily, explained company co-founder and CEO Da Hongfei. dBFT ensures finality, which means that once a transaction is confirmed by a block, it is confirmed permanently without being rolled back or revoked. In our point of view, finality is far more important than availability in an important financial system.
Bitcoin was the first cryptocurrency to really make a splash, and it still leads the pack. However, it is still too early to determine the ramifications of itsrecent fork, which could turn out to be either ablessing or a curse.
NEO has been designed with a focus on avoiding the security issues that might prompt a fork. Reliability and stability are a big priority for its creators, having seen projects like Bitcoin Unlimited come undone as a result of such issues.
It certainly seems like NEO is being set up to fulfill the needs of tomorrows cryptocurrency market. That being said, competition from the likes of Bitcoin and Ethereum wont be easy to overcome.
Disclosure: Several members of the Futurism team, including the editors of this piece, are personal investors in a number of cryptocurrency markets. Their personal investment perspectives have no impact on editorial content.

SpaceX Has Officially Put Red Dragon on the Back Burner, Delaying Mars Expedition – Futurism
Posted: at 3:31 am
In Brief Jim Green, the head of NASA's planetary science division, has confirmed that SpaceX has told the agency that their Red Dragon program will not be ready to go to Mars as soon as previously expected. According to past statements by CEO Elon Musk, a revised timeline could be revealed next month.
NASA has confirmed that SpaceX is making changes to their previously announced timeline for a manned mission to Mars. Jim Green, head of the agencys planetary science division, acknowledged that NASA had been informed that Red Dragon was being put on the back burner.
SpaceX was originally planning to make the journey to Mars in 2018, with NASA providing assistance with regards to navigation and communications as part of a Space Act Agreement between the two organizations. Wed agreed to navigate to Mars, get [Elon Musk] to the top of the atmosphere, and then it was up to him to land, said Green.
Initially, Red Dragon was expected to use a propulsion landing system to make its controlled descent onto the surface of Mars. However, when SpaceX confirmed in July 2017 that the craft wouldno longer have these capabilities, many observers wondered whether the Mars mission might miss its launch date.
Back in June, Musk teased major changes to SpaceXs mission to Mars, noting that updates could arrive as soon as September, so the expedition likely isnt off the table entirely. Whats more, the CEO just revealed the space suitshis company is developing for NASA, so that relationship seems to be as strong as ever.
Getting to Mars is no small feat, but even if SpaceX has to amend their course, the Red Planet appears to still be a big priority.

Residents ‘Happy’ With Futurist Development – Yorkshire Coast Radio
Posted: at 3:30 am
Scarborough Borough Council says residents with properties near the Futurist Theatre site are now happy with the plans to develop the area.
It comes after a drop in session that was hosted by the council where residents who had fears about their properties once the development got underway could come and talk to representatives.
The planning application for the development of the Futurist Theatre site that will be looked at later this year is to look at the method of the demolition.
It's likely that the application will be heard by the beginning of October and if that is successful, preliminary works could begin by Christmas.
Mike Cockerill is from Scarborough Borough Council's Cabinet, he said:
"Obviously residents had fears with such a major demolition and site stabilisation going on adjacent to their properties.
Most of the residents who came to the drop in session had their fears significantly allayed and they went away happy.
The major concern with the demolitionand stabilisation, is residents who fear their property may even fall down.
We put those concerns to bed because there is no way that we're going anyway more than 10 metres to any adjacent properties."

The International Space Station Had Two Views of the Eclipse – Atlas Obscura

The International Space Station crosses the solar disk during the eclipse. NASA/Joel Kowsky
One might be forgiven for imagining that a fly crawled across the lens NASA used to capture this image of yesterdays eclipse near Banner, Wyoming, but thats no fly. Its the International Space Station (ISS), more than 30,000 cubic feet of pressurized habitat, with six people aboard, traveling at 17,200 miles per hour more than 250 miles above Earth. This composite combines seven images of the station making its way across the solar disk, as millions watched the celestial show from belowa transit it made three times during the eclipse.
The six crew members currently on the ISSRandy Bresnik, Jack Fischer, Peggy Whitson, Paolo Nespoli, Fyodor Yurchikhin, and Sergey Ryazanskiywere the only people to see the eclipse from space. Here is what they saw when they looked up
and when they looked down:
They have seen and will see any number of wonders during their time in orbit, but the eclipse that entranced the United States has to be a highlight.

Space station astronaut sees solar eclipse shadow on Earth – CNET
Posted: at 11:34 pm
The ISS astronauts had a great view of the moon's shadow.
The view of a solar eclipse from space can be very different than what we see down here on Earth. Italian Space Agency and European Space Agency astronaut Paolo Nespoli snapped a series of photos of the moon casting its shadow on the planet from his vantage point on board the International Space Station. Nespoli tweeted the images on Monday.
Two of the photos show the view with parts of the space station in the frame. A dark blotch appears near the curve of the Earth where the moon cast its umbra. The shadow looks huge from this perspective. People standing in that umbra would be seeing the solar eclipse as it happened.
Nespoli wrote, "Voila! The # Eclipse2017 shadow from @Space_Station, no words needed."
The world's space agencies have been busy documenting the eclipse. Earlier Monday, a NASA photographer captured a gorgeous photo of the ISS transiting the sun as the moon took a bite out of the star's bright face.
The International Space Station Twitter account later shared another series of photos showing what the six astronauts in orbit witnessed during the event:
Now Playing: Watch this: Solar eclipse wows millions across the US, see it all

Canada’s newest astronauts consider moon, Mars missions after space station trip – Toronto Star
Posted: at 11:34 pm
By Peter RakobowchukThe Canadian Press
Tues., Aug. 22, 2017
MONTREALIts a far-out dream that Canadas two newest astronauts are hoping will come true: orbiting the moon within the next decade or so.
In fact, Joshua Kutryk and Jennifer Sidey are already looking beyond the International Space Station as they begin two years of intense basic training.
In an interview from Houston on Tuesday, Kutryk pointed out that Canada is committed to the space station until 2024 along with its international partners.
But the 35-year-old Albertan said the plan for what will happen after is already starting to be defined.
We dont have the details ironed out but we know that its going to involve new destinations, probably the moon and then Mars, said Kutryk, adding he expects Canada to seek out and play a large role.
I think that were living in a lifetime now when we see humans, including Canadian humans, potentially going back to the moon and thats just a super exciting thing for me to think about.
Thats to be determined but I do feel a lot of excitement for the Canadian space program in general, he said.
Sidey, who will be training alongside Kutryk, said travelling around the moon, in so-called cislunar orbit, is on her agenda.
Certainly, Im definitely in for the idea of deep space (and) longer space flights, kind of pushing what we can do, she said.
Cislunar for us is going to be incredibly important as a gateway to put people in orbit and eventually go back to the moon.
The 29-year-old Calgary-born astronaut was asked about her chances of orbiting the moon in the coming decades.
Her response was: Who knows, who knows, but Id love that... who wouldnt, huh.
But the focus over the next two years will be on understanding various things, including systems on the space station, human behaviour, robotics and survival training.
They will also learn Russian.
Were going to be juggling all sorts of subjects and theyre all very different and theyre all very important (and) keeping all those balls in the air at once is going to be tough, Sidey said.
Kutryk, a test pilot, admitted that learning Russian will be a tough test, noting it took him about 25 years to be comfortable in French.
Based on that experience, and when I look at the idea of learning a third language in two years, thats something thats definitely going to be challenging, he said.
On Tuesday, Kutryk and Sidey also joined a dozen American trainees in a link-up with three astronauts now on board the International Space Station.
Flight engineer Peggy Whitson, 57, who is on her third long-duration space station mission, had some advice for the group: know how to fix things.
You need to get good at using tools, Whitson said as she floated inside the space station. Thatll be an important part of your training, so pay attention to that part of it.
So you cant be hesitant about taking something apart and putting it back together, because thats a lot of our job.

The ultimate photobomb: NASA spied the Space Station crossing … – Mashable
Posted: at 11:34 pm
A cool thing happened in the sky today: the moon covered the sun, and people got super emotional about it.
While we watched from Earth, either with special glasses. cardboard boxes. or with our own scorched retinas, astronauts got to see the eclipse from another perspective.
And we got to see them creeping across the sun, thanks to a NASA photographer. Look at it... it's pretty awesome.
In photos taken by a NASA photographer located in the Northern Cascades National Park in Washington, the International Space Station is seen in silhouette as it transits the sun at roughly five miles per second during a partial phase of the solar eclipse, Monday, Aug. 21, 2017.
Compared to the size of the sun and the moon, the ISS resembles an ant crawling across a luminescent piece of cheese, or a TIE fighter roaring across an orange Death Star.
Here's a composite image made from four different frames.
The video at the top of this story, taken by NASA's Joel Kowsky, shows the space station crossing the sun at five miles per second. It was taken by a high speed camera that captured images at 1,500 frames per second.
Feel free to make a badass TIE fighter sound effect as you watch.
People in the United States won't get to experience a total solar eclipse again until 2024. Better buy your glasses now before they skyrocket in price.

In 1984, a roll of 35mm film was sent from an anonymous source in Albuquerque, NM to the doorstep of filmmaker Jaime Shandera in Burbank, CA. The film contained still pictures of eight top secret pages known as the Eisenhower Briefing Document. The documents are a briefing from the head of the CIA to Eisenhower from 1952, and they inform him of not only the MJ12 organization, but also groups composition and purpose. That purpose is UFOs and communication with aliens.
In April 2017, Giorgio Tsoukolos met with investigator Linda Moulton Howe, one of the first people to see Top Secret documents in 1994. Those documents are from April 1954 and have official Majestic 12 Group markings, as well as a war office stamp.
Regardless of opinions on the matter, many believe the Roswell Incident is incontrovertible proof of Americas involvement and interaction with aliens. In fact, the local newspaper reported that a flying saucer was captured at Roswell Army Air Field in the following days paper. Government officials may have clarified with the whole weather balloon comment the following day, but a close examination of all the available data makes that fairly difficult to believe.
Could the Roswell Incident and the formation of MJ12 be mutually revealing? If not, its awfully coincidental. Furthermore, other Top Secret organizations were formed around the same time:
According to Dwight D. Eisenhowers great-granddaughter, the organization was real, and her famous relative had no choice but to continue what Truman had started. In fact, she says Eisenhower physically met with aliens.
Any secret with more than one person involved risks not being a secret. So its interesting to consider MJ12 as a hoax considering its relative anonymity.
In the first place, MJ12 itself may have actively attempted to throw investigators off the scent. Famous astrophysicist Donald Menzel may have been the perfect person to dissuade potential believers. Menzel was a UFO contrarian and skeptic. In fact, he wrote multiple books on the matter. According to Robert Wood, PhD, Menzels books were nothing more than counter-intelligence. Indeed, while some of the information in MJ12 documents has been disproven, there is certainly more than a grain of truth when it comes to Menzels inclusion in the group.
Americas first Secretary of Defense was James Forrestal, who was also the first man to lead MJ12. Appointed by Truman to be in charge of the secret MJ12 investigations, Forrestal may have uncovered German secrets that needed to be kept secret. The official stance is that he suffered from depression, and committed suicide from the 16th floor of a hospital.
His suicide is highly questionable. Some have mentioned scratch marks were allegedly on the window, and his own brother unequivocally refutes the possibility of suicide. Among his brothers concerns are the plans James had following hospital discharge, the bill of health given by all top level people (including Truman), and the fact he committed suicide a few hours before was to be discharged.
Perhaps James Forrestal was planning on spilling the beans on Americas involvement with UFOs?
JFKs death has been discussed, researched, reported and debated ad nauseam. Those details wont be discussed. Howe provides one extra piece of information. She breaks down one Top Secret document often referred to as the Scorched Memo, recovered from a fire. That document is allegedly from CIA chief Allen Dulles referencing JFK. For example, it says LANCER the Secret Service name for JFK at the time was getting a little too curious for their liking.
The fact that a later portion mentions that it should be wet, makes the document potential authorization to kill JFK if he doesnt cease his inquiries.
Furthermore, author Douglas Caddy was interviewed on the episode about his last interaction with CIA operative E. Howard Hunt. Caddy says he had personal communication with Hunt in 1975, and explicitly asked about a JFK assassination. According to Caddy, the reply was that JFK was indeed assassinated. Apparently JFK was about to give Americas most vital secret to the Soviets.
Much of this Ancient Aliens episode revolves around a second roll of film unveiled in March 1994. According to Howe, its the most compelling document to confirm the MJ12 cover-up.
Howe states the documents titled Extraterrestrial Entities and Technology, Recovery and Disposal have been authenticated multiple ways, one of which includes the typeset. In fact, typeset nuances were traced back to a monotype in a government printing lab, and confirmed by a longstanding employee there.
Other details contained within the second roll of film are four different sketches of UFOs (e.g. Triangle, Long tube, Ice cream cone), a note about mutually agreed upon, alien initiated, obscure location meetups, and an investigation into Interplanetary Phenomena Unit (IPU) in July 1947. The IPU investigation was ordered by President Eisenhower, and conducted at the White Sands Proving Ground by General Nathan Farragut Twining. According to Eisenhower, Twinings report was for the purpose of making an appraisal of the reported unidentified objects being kept there. Additionally, the final report included talks of a possible atomic engine inside a UFO confirmed by Dr. Robert Oppenheimer.
The rest of the Ancient Aliens episode rambles a bit, as most episodes do. If there were a format for 45 minute shows, Ancient Aliens would be a perfect candidate. Speaking of perfect candidates, there is a guy named Corey Goode who alleges to be part of a secret military space program (i.e. Solar Warden) and Mars colonization effort that involves three dozen nations.
Furthermore, a hacker named Gary McKinnon may have found more proof of a link between MJ12 and current space operations. He hacked into NASA and Pentagon servers to uncover files he claims provide undeniable proof of MJ12 and their legacy. In one such document, he found a list of people and ships that were named after original MJ12 personnel. For what its worth, Corey Goode confirms his experiences with Solar Warden.
Both believe the truth is being hidden from the general population, but everything will soon be disclosed.
This episode of Ancient Aliens is a bit different. It deals more with cover-ups than actual aliens. Nonetheless
The total count for the ancient astronaut theorists suggest/say/theorize phrase variation: 3.
Ancient Aliens airs Friday nights on the History channel.
