Here Are the Biggest Health Industry News Items of 2022 So Far – DocWire News

With each passing day, technology continues to advance. With technological advances comes advances in healthcare. In the past few years alone, there have been major breakthroughs in treating and detecting diseases in ways that weve never been able to before. Machine-learning, smart devices, and artificial intelligence (AI) are rising in the biomedical field ranks, and its implementation in healthcare has only just begun. Below is a list of a few of the biggest health industry news of 2022 (so far!):

Among the various types of cancer, pancreatic cancer has the lowest five-year survival rate. Its projected to become the second leading cause of cancerous death in the US by 2030. As with all types of cancer, early detection can be key in successfully treating the disease. Computed tomography (CT) is the method most commonly used in detecting pancreatic cancers, but it is not without its drawbacks. CT scans have only modest sensitivity in detecting small tumors; they miss approximately 40% of tumors smaller than 2 cm. CT scanning is also interpreter-dependent, which may be limited by availability and expertise of radiologists.

A nationwide, population-based study, published in the September issue of Radiology, sought to develop a tool to combat the acknowledged inefficiencies in CT scanning. Researchers in Taiwan developed a computer-aided detection (CAD) tool which included a segmentation convolutional neural network (CNN) to identify the pancreas on CT scans. Researchers also created an ensemble classifier, comprising five classification CNNs that predict whether pancreatic cancer is present. Researchers tested this tool on 669 patients with pancreatic cancer and a control group of 804 patients without pancreatic cancer. The deep learningbased tool demonstrated 90% sensitivity and 93% specificity in real-world subjects. Furthermore, tests showed satisfactory sensitivity for tumors smaller than 2 cm at around 75%. The CAD tool may serve as a supplement for radiologists to enhance the detection of pancreatic cancer, said co-senior author, Wei-Chi Liao, MD, PhD, from National Taiwan University and National Taiwan University Hospital.

Adoptive cell therapy is a method of treatment for many types of cancers. It is a type of immunotherapy in which an individuals immune system is trained to destroy their tumor. Adoptive cell therapy involves genetically engineering T cells, which are lymphocytes that act in the immune response. The problem, however, is that its challenging to even identify T cell receptors that can recognize cancer-specific alterations.

Researchers at the National Institutes of Health tackled this challenge, identifying unique expression profiles in 55 genes that help identify rare anti-tumor lymphocytes that can infiltrate and destroy metastatic epithelial tumors. Researchers designed sensitive assays that identify tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) which recognize the products of mutations that can cause cancer. By identifying these TILs, researchers can develop personalized and effective cancer immunotherapies for patients who dont respond to standard treatments.

Steven Rosenberg, MD, PhD, chief of the Surgery Branch at the Center for Cancer Research and National Cancer Institute, spearheaded a study published in the February issue of Science. Researchers looked at every potential mutation in a tumor that could be a target. Over the course of several years, Dr. Rosenbergs study team developed this new assay that identifies the gene expression profiles of a few rare lymphocytes that recognize mutated cell surface proteins of cancerous cells. This development in cell-based immunotherapy encourages tumor shrinkage in patients with stomach, esophageal, ovarian, and breast cancers, among other types of metastatic cancers.

In a study published in the February issue of Nature Medicine, researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Lausanne, hypothesized that an arrangement of specialized epidural electrical stimulation targeting a cluster of dorsal roots involved in leg and trunk movements would result in superior effectiveness after severe spinal cord injury (SCI). To test their hypothesis, researchers developed software supporting the rapid configuration of activity-specific stimulation programs. The stimulation programs reproduced the natural activation of motor neurons that make activities such as standing, walking, cycling, and swimming possible.

Included in the study were three paralyzed patients, men who had no sensation or control over their legs after suffering SCIs in motorcycle accidents. In the ongoing clinical trial, the men were able to take supported steps after one day. After a few months, they were able to walk on their own with a walker. Researchers reported that neurorehabilitation supported sufficient improvement to restore these activities in community settings. While this nerve-stimulating device doesnt cure SCIs, it nevertheless provides patients and medical professionals hope and excitement for further developments in this kind of assistive technology.

Type 2 diabetes, the most common type, is a chronic and progressive condition in which the body cannot make or utilize insulin normally. This leads to high levels of glucose in the blood (hyperglycemia) and can damage the vessels that supply blood to vital organs, which in turn increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, vision problems, and nerve problems. While there are many types of medications to treat type 2 diabetes, many people still have difficulties maintaining normal blood sugar levels. In May, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved tirzepatide (brand name Mounjaro) injections to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes, in addition to a healthy diet and regular exercise. According to the FDA, tirzepatide was proven to be more effective in improving blood sugar levels than other diabetic therapies when compared in clinical trials.

In five separate clinical trials, three different doses of tirzepatide (5mg, 10mg, and 15mg) were evaluated as either a stand-alone therapy or as an add-on to other diabetic medicines. The outcome measurement in the studies was the measure of blood control, otherwise known as hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) levels. Used as a stand-alone therapy, patients that were randomized to 15mg of tirzepatide had an average lowering of their HbA1c level 1.6% more than placebos. When compared to other commercially used diabetes medications, tirzepatide resulted in a lowering of HbA1c up to 1.0%. Additionally, as many individuals with type 2 diabetes are obese, tirzepatide resulted in more weight lost in patients when compared with placebo and other diabetes medications.

Sepsis is a life-threatening medical emergency that results from the bodys extreme chain reaction to an infection already in the body, most often originating in the lungs, urinary tract, skin, or gastrointestinal tract. If not treated quickly, sepsis can swiftly lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and even death. Sepsis is easy to miss because symptoms, such as fever and confusion, are common in other conditions. According to the CDC, 1 in 3 people who die in a hospital had sepsis sometime during that hospitalization. Traditional methods of testing for sepsis can include blood cultures looking for bacterial infections or testing for viral infections.

A team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University have developed a new AI system to detect sepsis nearly six hours earlier in patients when compared with traditional methods. Their findings suggest patients are 20% less likely to die thanks in part to this early detection. Published in the July issue of Nature Medicine, the studys early detection tool boasted a high sensitivity rate; among the 9,805 retrospectively identified sepsis cases, over 80% of were identified. The adaptive technology has even been tailored to identify patients at risk for pressure injuries (i.e., bed sores), bleeding, acute respiratory failure, and cardiac arrest. Its adaptive and takes into consideration the diversity of the patient population, the unique ways in which doctors and nurses deliver care across different sites, and the unique characteristics of each health system, allowing it to be significantly more accurate and to gain provider trust and adoption, Suchi Saria, research director of the Malone Center for Engineering in Healthcare at Johns Hopkins University and lead author of the study, said.

Microbiologists Improve the Flavor of Beer – Technology Networks

Belgian investigators have improved the flavor of contemporary beer by identifying and engineering a gene that is responsible for much of the flavor of beer and some other alcoholic drinks. The research appears in Applied and Environmental Microbiology, a journal of the American Society for Microbiology.

For centuries, beer was brewed in open, horizontal vats. But in the 1970s, the industry switched to using large, closed vessels, which are much easier to fill, empty, and clean, enabling brewing of larger volumes and reducing costs. However, these modern methods produced inferior quality beer, due to insufficient flavor production.

During fermentation, yeast converts 50 percent of the sugar in the mash to ethanol, and the other 50 percent to carbon dioxide. The problem: the carbon dioxide pressurizes these closed vessels, dampening flavor.

Johan Thevelein, Ph.D., an emeritus professor of Molecular Cell Biology at Katholieke Universiteit, and his team had pioneered technology for identifying genes responsible for commercially important traits in yeast. They applied this technology to identify the gene(s) responsible for flavor in beer, by screening large numbers of yeast strains to evaluate which did the best job of preserving flavor under pressure. They focused on a gene for a banana-like flavor because it is one of the most important flavors present in beer, as well as in other alcoholic drinks, said Thevelein, who is also founder of NovelYeast, which collaborates with other companies in industrial biotechnology.

To our surprise, we identified a single mutation in the MDS3 gene, which codes for a regulator apparently involved in production of isoamyl acetate, the source of the banana-like flavor that was responsible for most of the pressure tolerance in this specific yeast strain, said Thevelein.

Thevelein and coworkers then used CRISPR/Cas9, a revolutionary gene editing technology, to engineer this mutation in other brewing strains, which similarly improved their tolerance of carbon dioxide pressure, enabling full flavor. That demonstrated the scientific relevance of our findings, and their commercial potential, said Thevelein.

The mutation is the first insight into understanding the mechanism by which high carbon dioxide pressure may compromise beer flavor production, said Thevelein, who noted that the MDS3 protein is likely a component of an important regulatory pathway that may play a role in carbon dioxide inhibition of banana flavor production, adding, how it does that is not clear.

The technology has also been successful in identifying genetic elements important for rose flavor production by yeast in alcoholic drinks, as well as other commercially important traits, such as glycerol production and thermotolerance.

The 2022 study, published in Gastroenterology, evaluated whether fermentable fiber increased the risk of liver cancer in mice with a specific congenital defect. 90% of the mice showed no signs of cancer when fed a standard diet. But the mice who ate diets enriched with the fermentable fiber inulin became more likely to develop liver injury and liver cancer. The mice also had elevated bile acid (BA) levels, a marker that predicts liver cancer.

Inulin is a soluble fiber that occurs naturally in plant foods like raw onion, garlic, wheat, barley, and chicory root(per Medical News Today). When eaten in its natural form, inulin is considered safe for most people. But inulin is also artificially manufactured, either as chicory inulin or as high-performance (HP) inulin, which is made by removing some molecules from natural inulin. Food manufacturers add inulin to processed foods like protein bars, drinks, yogurt, and baked goods to replace sugar and fat and to improve texture.

WebMD considers inulin a beneficial prebiotic fiber that helps good bacteria grow in the gut, helping to maintain a healthy gut biome. But the 2022 study, along with another 2018 study by researchers at the University of Toledo, shows inulin increases the risk for liver cancer in some mice (via Genetic Engineering & Biotechnology News). Human studies are needed to determine if inulin has similar effects on people, but for now, it may be safer to limit your consumption of processed foods.

Scientists Claim to Have Discovered the "Secret Ingredient for Building Life" – Futurism

A team of researchers from Purdue University claim to have discovered the "chemistry behind the origin of life" on Earth in simple droplets of water, and they're using strikingly strong language to celebrate the findings.

Graham Cooks, chemistry professor at Purdue and lead author of a new paper published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, called it a "dramatic discovery" and the "secret ingredient for building life" in a statement.

"This is essentially the chemistry behind the origin of life," he added. "This is the first demonstration that primordial molecules, simple amino acids, spontaneously form peptides, the building blocks of life, in droplets of pure water."

And it's not just the principle researchers who are heralding the discovery, saying itcould have some vast implications on our understanding of how life formed on Earth billions of years ago.

"I find this discovery truly fascinating," Alan Doucette, associate professor at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada, and expert in the field of mass spectrometry, who was not involved in the research, told Futurism.

"To me, the evidence seems to be growing that there is something really quite unique and extraordinary about the chemistry at or within small water droplet surfaces," he added.

In simple terms, the research supports the decades-old theory that life on Earth started in oceans. Amino acids, which scientists believe came to Earth billions of years ago via meteorite showers, can bond together to form peptides, which have long been considered the building blocks of proteins, and eventually life itself.

But what has confounded scientists is the fact that this process requires both aqueous and non-aqueous environments. Now, using state-0f-the-art spectrometers to get a close look at chemical reactions inside water droplets, Cooks and his colleagues found that "extremely quick reactions can take place" where water droplets meet the atmosphere.

That conclusion could explain how life thrived where the sea meets the land, or where fresh water crosses fertile landscapes.

Cooks and his team go as far as to claim that these building blocks of life can spontaneously form in water itself, without the need of other catalysts.

"The rates of reactions in droplets are anywhere from a hundred to a million times faster than the same chemicals reacting in bulk solution," Cooks said in the statement.

Cooks and his team hope their finding could help us understand the basic processes involved in the formation of life on Earth which, in turn, could also help us investigate if we're alone in the universe, or even create our own versions of living matter.

In the short term, however, these reactions could prove useful in other areas such as drug discovery.

"We all know water was and is essential to life on Earth," Doucette told Futurism. "But we still have a lot to learn."

Researchers have discovered that the saliva of wax worms, the caterpillar larvae of the wax moths that feeds on beeswax in beehives, can quickly break down polyethylene, a material predominantly used in plastic bags that currently leads to immense waste worldwide.

If the humble worms could be scaled into a viable commercial process,The Guardian reports still a huge "if" at this point it could have a major impact on global recycling efforts,since polyethylene alone makes up 30 percent of all plastic production.

Conventional methods of recycling polyethylene involve mechanical breakdown, which leads to the resulting recycled material being less pure and less valuable.

Best of all, the enzymes present in the wax worms' saliva can break down the long polymer chains of polyethylene at room temperatures, in water, and at neutral pH levels far more convenient conditions than conventional plastic recycling methods that require high temperatures and carefully controlled acidity levels.

The researchers made the discovery by accident.

"My beehives were plagued with wax worms, so I started cleaning them, putting the worms in a plastic bag," Federica Bertocchini from the Biological Research Centre in Madrid and co-author of a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, told The Guardian.

"After a while, I noticed lots of holes and we found it wasnt only chewing, it was [chemical breakdown], so that was the beginning of the story," Bertocchini added.

There's growing interest in using insects or other living organisms to recycle plastic waste, from fungi to super-worms that can survive by eating styrofoam.

Unfortunately, the researchers still have a lot of work to do before wax worm saliva becomes a viable solution for a growing plastic waste crisis. For one, synthesizing the chemicals is still prohibitively expensive, according to experts.

"We need to do a lot of research and think about how to develop this new strategy to deal with plastic waste," Clemente Arias, Bertocchini's colleague and co-author, told The Guardian.

Something Cool Is Happening to the Frogs at Chernobyl – Futurism

Chernobyl is best known as the site of the worst nuclear reactor meltdown in history. But since the residents left after the 1986 catastrophe, it's also become one of the biggest nature reserves in Europe and within the confines of its Exclusion Zone, frogs are now showing just how unique the area is.

A group of Spanish zoological researchers wrote in The Conversation how they became intrigued by strange, black-tinted Eastern tree frogs found near and around the Exclusion Zone,since the critters are usually a snazzy lime green.

In 2016, after the first swarthy amphibian was found, the team out of Spain's University of Oviedo and the Doana Biological Station decided to study the Eastern tree frogs.They found that critters in the preserve now range in coloration from pitch-black to forest green, as images from the researchers show.

They found that in the 36 years since the tragic accident at Chernobyl, the Eastern tree frogs in the regions surrounding the now-abandoned nuclear reactor seem to have undergone a sort of rapid evolution that caused them to develop more melanin in order to withstand the heightened and prolonged radiation from the disaster.

As researchers Germn Orizaola and Pablo Burraco wrote in their Conversation essay, which is based on findings published recently in thejournal Evolutionary Applications, they believe the darker colored frogs a genetic minority normally were better protected from the meltdown's radiation due to the melanin in their skin. In turn, they reproduced more successfully, creating more and more darker-tinted tree frogs in their wake.

In other words, we're watching natural selection play out in front of our eyes. That's pretty cool.

"More than ten generations of frogs have passed since the accident and a classic, although very fast, process of natural selection may explain why these dark frogs are now the dominant type for the species within the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone," the researchers wrote in the essay.

The researchers, who also in 2019 detailed the astonishing biodiversity of the Chernobyl region, added that they "hope the current war in Ukraine will end soon" because it's put an understandable damper on scientific study in the region.

Google Creates AI That Turns Text Into 3D Objects – Futurism

Okay, this is pretty cool.DreamFusion

DreamFusion, Google's next-gen, AI-powered text-to-3D-image generator, is here.

Well, sort of. A proof-of-concept paper is here, at least. DreamFusion is an evolution of Dream Fields, a text-to-3D-image generator revealed by Google back in 2021. And like Dream Fields, DreamFusion creates its 3D images by combining a Neural Radiance Field (NeRF) or a neural network that can create synthetic 3D scenes using partial 2D datasets with a pre-trained text-to-image prompt model.

The twist? Unlike Dream Fields, which utilized OpenAI's CLIP technology as that latter pre-trained model, DreamFusion now uses its own: Imagen, Google's DALL-E 2 competitor.

So, basically, Google booted Elon Musk's OpenAI tech and figured out how to use its own. Keeping things in-house smart.

"Happy to announce DreamFusion, our new method for Text-to-3D!" Ben Poole, a research scientist at Google Brain and co-author of the proof-of-concept paper, wrote on Twitter. "We optimize a NeRF from scratch using a pre-trained text-to-image diffusion model. No 3D data needed!"

While the DreamFusion models aren't totally realistic, they're admittedly pretty impressive as its creators explain the paper, the AI-generated forms that are shown off on its website are "coherent, with high-quality normals, surface geometry and depth, and are relightable with a Lambertian shading model."

In other words, while they might not be as convincingly realistic as some of those photorealistic DALL-E 2 images (yet), they have all of the right elements. The proportions are right, the depth makes sense, and so on. And not to shade OpenAI, but this next version of the tech is certainly a visual improvement from its first iteration.

It's unclear when DreamFusion or whatever comes next will be available to the public, though we can definitely see a number of applications already.Just think of the value to indie game developers alone!And according to Twitter, it's already been used to 3D-print a ghost eating a hamburger, so cheers to that.

Over the next 300 million years, all the Earths continents will smash together and form a new supercontinent called Amasia, closing the Pacific Ocean in the process.

At least,that'saccording to a new study from researchers at Curtin University, published in National Science Review last week,that plots the medium-term geological future of our planet.

"Over the past two billion years, Earths continents have collided together to form a supercontinent every 600 million years, known as the supercontinent cycle," said study lead author Chuan Hung in a press release. "This means that the current continents are due to come together again in a couple of hundred of million years time."

To establish a timeframe, the researchers used 4D geodynamic modeling of the Earths tectonic plates, determined to find out why previous supercontinents formed in completely different ways.

Of those ways, introversion is one of two main models, and occurs when continents close over an internal ocean that was formed when the previous supercontinent broke apart. On the opposing end is extroversion, which has the continents closing over the external, former superocean. If that bit of rocky history could be cleared up, the researchers could better predict the next supercontinental assembly.

What the researchers found is that the strength of the oceanic lithosphere determines which form of assembly occurs, andfrom there concluded that extroversion will be responsible for the next supercontinent. In this case, the former superocean is the Pacific, formerly the much greater Panthalassa superocean that surrounded Pangea, the previous supercontinent.

"The resulting new supercontinent has already been named Amasia because some believe that the Pacific Ocean will close (as opposed to the Atlantic and Indian oceans) when America collides with Asia," said Huang. "Australia is also expected to play a role in this important Earth event, first colliding with Asia and then connecting America and Asia once the Pacific Ocean closes."

If they hold up, these are remarkable findings that provide a glimpse of the planets future. But it's still only one of many hypotheses regarding the shifting of continents, including the Pangea Proxima model, which suggests the aforementioned Atlantic and Indian oceans will close instead.
