Hard-hit citrus industry in Florida will mean higher consumer prices – FreshPlaza.com

Posted: October 15, 2022 at 5:13 pm

Consumers in Florida and across the US should expect the price of Florida oranges, grapefruits and processed products to increase as a direct response to the ravages of Hurricane Ian. Yesterday, the USDA released the initial citrus crop forecast for the 2022-23 season, but that survey was taken before the hurricane. The forecast includes a decrease in Florida orange, grapefruit and specialty crop (mostly tangerines and tangelos) production.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Florida all orange forecast, at 28.0 million boxes (1.26 million tons), was down 32 percent from last season's final utilization. Navel varieties were forecast down 40 percent from last season and the Valencia orange forecast was down 25 percent.

The industry has struggled for years with issues such as deadly citrus-greening disease, and the surveys found trees showing smaller-sized fruit and fewer oranges per tree. After the hurricane, further production decreases will likely mean even more scarcity and increased prices at the grocery store.

Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried released a statement saying: "As we move forward in the wake of this disaster, rest assured that I remain steadfast in my support of our Florida citrus growers. And my department remains committed to innovation in the face of the ongoing challenges of weather events like Ian, citrus greening and unfair trade practices. It is heartbreaking to see such an iconic Florida industry hurting right now."

Fried said that the current citrus forecast, surveyed prior to Hurricane Ian, will be an invaluable baseline for growers, processors, packers and government in predicting additional crop loss. A December forecast will reflect updated inspections of groves.

Chorley teen with Asperger’s selected to represent the UK in judo at Virtus Games in Australia – Lancashire Evening Post

Posted: at 5:13 pm

Joshuha Hodkinson, 18, who was diagnosed with Asperger's five year's ago, was inspired to take up the sport after he lost an 'uphill' battle with his sister Chloe, 17, and will now attend the Virtus Ocenia Asia Games 2022 next month in Brisbane.

The sporting event, which will take place from November 5-11, is an international multi-sport competition for elite athletes with an intellectual impairment.

Competing in various competitions, Joshuha has given his Asperger's a kick to rise up the judo ranks, collecting numerous awards as he goes.

He said: "I first started at Trowbridge Budokwai in 2012 as my dad encouraged me to start a sport as my sister Chloe and I fought on a nearby hill called the White Horse and she beat me up!

"So from a few weeks after that, I started judo and haven't stopped.

"I have competed an uncountable amount of times, some notable titles I have had is, Ben van der Eng (BENG) Adaptive World Judo Games champion three years in a row.

"It was cancelled in 2020/21 due to Covid - so I won in 2022, 2019 and 2018.

"I have also been Adaptive British Champion multiple times and Adaptive British Schools Champion also.

"Judo allows me to forget whatever has happened in the day, and allows me to clear my mind by focussing on doing judo.

"I enjoy learning new techniques and trying them when we do randori - sparring in judo."

When not training for upcoming competitions at SKK Judo Club with trainer Peter Blood, the former Southlands High School pupil also works at Duce Accountants Firm in Chorley.

Joshuha, who also trains at Beach Judokwai under the guidance of coach Joe Burns, added: "I am very excited to compete for Great Britain officially for the first time and being able to have the opportunity to represent my country on an international scale.

"I would like to thank Peter Blood who is my trainer at SKK and Kerry Tansey who has arranged monthly national training sessions at the Walsall centre of excellence, letting us train with experienced judoka - people who do judo such as Bronze medalist paralympian Ben Quilter and others.

"I would like to continue to compete for Great Britain, there is another competition in Paris in 2023 that I would like to work towards also."

Being athletically talented clearly runs in the family as sister Chloe Baker is also an avid judoka and she has recently attained her black belt.

She was also one of the youngest to compete in the Junior category at the Judo European Cup in May.

From fighting on a hill to both collecting numerous awards, the rest, as they say, is - judo!

A GofundMe page for the team has been set up help finance The Great British Adaptive Judo Team compete in future International Judo Championships.

Ageing is a technical problem that can be reversed, Dubai Future Forum told – The National

Posted: at 5:00 pm

Being able to live for ever sounds like a concept that belongs on the pages of a science-fiction novel, one as implausible as time travel or becoming invisible.

However, that could all be about to change, according to a guest at the Dubai Future Forum.

Futurist Dr Jose Cordeiro said anyone who is still alive by the year 2030 has a good chance of living for ever.

Dr Cordeiro told the forum that the key to immortality was finding a way to reverse the ageing process.

We are very close to figuring it out. Ageing is a technical problem that we understand and can probably reverse, he said, speaking to The National on the sidelines of the forum.

Its a likelihood that people will soon be able to live for ever, rather than a possibility.

I personally dont plan to die.

While his remarks might sound like pie in the sky, humans are gradually living longer.

According to James C Riley, professor and author of several books on the global history of health, between 1800 and 2000 life expectancy rose from about 30 years to a global average of 67 years, and more than 75 years in some countries.

This dramatic change was called a health transition, characterised by a change both in how long people expected to live, and how they expected to die.

The increase in life expectancy, with people now living an average of more than 70 years, is often attributed to medical advancements, improved diets and better awareness of harmful habits.

Dr Cordeiro was adamant that immortality is simply the next logical step in the human journey and that stopping the ageing process is a matter of simple engineering.

We never used to be able to fly but now weve even been able to go to the Moon, he said.

One critical event that needs to happen in the race for immortality is reaching what is known as "longevity escape velocity".

This refers to a situation where life expectancy is improving at a rate faster than people are ageing.

That point could be reached as soon as 2029, according to Dr Cordeiro, meaning everyone alive afterwards could theoretically live for ever.

'Turritopsis dohrnii' is a species of biologically immortal jellyfish found worldwide in temperate to tropic waters. Getty

The solution to finding a way to live for ever could lie in our oceans, he said.

Last month, researchers at Spains University of Oviedo sequenced the genome of the Turritopsis dohrnii, more commonly referred to as the immortal jellyfish.

The moniker is no coincidence as the creature, which is smaller than the nail on the smallest human finger, is able to reverse its lifespan.

It does this by shrinking in on itself when physically damaged or experiencing stresses such as starvation, reabsorbing its tentacles and losing the ability to swim, according to the UKs National History Museum.

It then settles on the ocean floor in a blob-like cyst before re-emerging in a new body within 36 hours.

We are studying why there are certain life forms that do not age. Now that we are able to study the immortal jellyfish, we will be discovering things very quickly, Dr Cordeiro said.

One of the major issues will be humanity coming to terms with the possibility of living for ever, after millennia of living with the knowledge that death was an inevitability.

There are mental issues that need to be resolved as we have become accustomed to the fact we will all die, since the beginning of humanity. But it does not need to be that way any more, he said.

He pointed to the work being carried by high-profile tech-billionaires into anti-ageing as another example of how immortality could be around the corner.

Last year, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos invested in Altos Labs, a start-up with the goal of extending human life.

In 2016, Facebooks Mark Zuckerberg and his wife Priscilla Chan announced a $3 billion plan to erase all diseases by 2100, while in the same year Microsoft said it was using computer science to solve cancer within a decade.

Earlier in the week, a UAE medical group unveiled plans to help the population reach a life expectancy of 101.

Pure Health chief executive Farhan Malik announced a scheme to make Abu Dhabi a centre of research when it came to longevity.

At an event in Louvre in Abu Dhabi he said that when we talk about longevity, we don't just mean increasing lifespan but making people healthier for longer.

Over the past decade, billions of dollars have been invested in anti-ageing research, with Google's Calico, the American National Institute on Ageing and Saudi Arabia's Hevolution Foundation being some of the names in the industry.

Ai-Da the robot and the myth of AI – Spiked

Posted: at 5:00 pm

This week, a robot gave evidence to the House of Lords an event that is being celebrated by the robots promoter and the media as a groundbreaking historical moment.

The robot, called Ai-Da, is billed as the worlds first ultra-realistic robot. It is the brainchild of art entrepreneur Aidan Meller, a gallery director with no technical background. Engineering students at Leeds University designed a drawing arm, allowing the mannequin to generate primitive doodles (or art as the media have called it). Another team created a silicone face and added a wig. This was finally assembled by Engineered Arts, a company founded by special-effects expert Will Jackson, which creates animatronic mannequins.

The result looks uncannily like Sky News consonant-droppin Westminster correspondent, Beth Rigby. And just like a real human, Ai-Da can also lean forward and back, wave her arms and look around in all directions, making it a match for any SW1 lobby sleuth.

Once his robot had a body, Meller set about generating publicity. He describes Ai-Da as mind-blowing and groundbreaking claims that enthusiastic media outlets have taken at face value. Ai-Da and its exhibitions have been featured in over 900 publications. Some outlets have even interviewed Ai-Da. Questions have to be pre-submitted to Meller in advance. Then he generates the answers so they can be ventriloquised by Ai-Da.

Last year, in a stunt worthy of Malcolm McLaren, the late manager of the Sex Pistols, Ai-Da was arrested in Egypt on espionage claims. Meller told the press that the British ambassador was working through the night to release it in time for an art show. Fortunately for everyone, this deadline was met.

This week, Ai-Da and Meller were summoned by the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee, as part of its inquiry into the future of the UKs creative industries. As with Ai-Das media interviews, the questions and answers were prepared in advance.

In the session, Meller sat beside the mannequin as it read out his replies, most of which offered little more than poundshop transhumanism. I do not have subjective experiences [but] I still create art, Ai-Da told the Lords.

Despite the hype, Ai-Da isnt the first robot to receive the call from publicity-seeking parliamentarians. Four years ago, Pepper, a talking mannequin created by engineering students at Middlesex University, gave evidence to a committee that was established to discuss the fourth industrial revolution. MPs presumed that successors to Pepper would play a significant role in the economy in the coming years.

The fourth industrial revolution is possibly the most important challenge facing our nation over the next 10, 20 to 30 years, committee chair Robert Halfon said back in 2018. The Pepper session, like Ai-Das, also took the form of pre-arranged questions and scripted responses. Both sessions might as well have been an email exchange. Unlike Pinnochio, neither Pepper nor Ai-Da has developed agency they simply ventriloquise the thoughts of their creators. The physical robot is superfluous. In 2018, Wireds Gian M Volpicelli called the Pepper session a pointless parliamentary pantomime.

This weeks House of Lords stunt deserves the same scorn. Or perhaps even more. Since at one point, Ai-Da couldnt even complete its pre-recorded responses and had to be rebooted.

Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk also revealed a humanoid robot, Optimus. Musk claims that Optimus could one day perform dangerous manual work, help in care homes or become a sex partner. The media usually more than willing to accept outlandish claims about robotics have been more sceptical on this occasion. Experts in robotics have been given space to point out the flaws. Robots can perform simple tasks and exhibit superficial levels of situational awareness, but it takes just one detail to be out of what is expected and the robot will quickly descend into a series of mistakes that will typically end with unrecoverable disaster, notes AI researcher Filip Piekniewski in Business Insider. According to Piekniewski, Optimus is a complete and utter scam. Even Tesla-friendly critics concede that Optimus hasnt really done much to advance the field of robotics.

Five years ago, speaking to parliamentarians about the future of AI and robotics, I urged them to take evidence from more sceptical experts including the likes of Piekniewski, Gary Marcus and Jaron Lanier to get a more realistic view of the field. None was ever summoned. From this, I concluded that parliamentarians care far more about being seen to be ahead of the technological curve than they do about the actual technology. This weeks Ai-Da session has only confirmed this suspicion.

The truth is that there has been no quantum leap in robotics in at least a decade. There has been some steady progress in the capabilities and deployment of robots. But there have been setbacks, too.

The most conspicuous failures have come from attempts to attach artificial intelligence to machines. Amazon recently halted the expansion of its humanless robot stores in the UK and has also scaled back robot Prime deliveries. Level four or five autonomous driving which would mean high or full automation recedes ever further into the future. Robotics is advancing, but there is no sign of a revolution.

Computer scientist Jaron Lanier warned 20 years ago that we make ourselves stupid in order to make the computer software seem smart, reminding us that artificial intelligence is better understood as a belief system instead of a technology. That now seems like a spookily prescient description of todays political class. They are so anxious to place themselves at the prow of the ship of state, their eyes trained to the horizon as it sails into a bold technological future, that they feel obliged to create the entirely imaginary world of the fourth industrial revolution. And if that means they have to abase themselves before an animated mannequin, then thats just part of the job.

Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam to release a day early in Indian theatres – Ottplay

Posted: at 5:00 pm

HomeNewsDwayne Johnson's Black Adam to release a day early in Indian theatres

Hollywood star Dwayne Johnson's much-awaited movie Black Adam will make its debut in Indian theatres on October 20, a day earlier than its global release.

Warner Bros India shared the news on Thursday on its social media handle, announcing that the film will be released in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu in the country on October 20, instead of October 21.

Black Adam is a spin-off from Warner Bros and New Line Cinema's Shazam!, featuring Zachary Levi.

The character first appeared in DC Comics in the 1940s as a villain corrupted by power. He became an anti-hero in the early 2000s.

Directed by Jungle Cruise director Jaume Collet-Serra, the movie also features Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Dr Fate.

The movie is written by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani.

This one has generated a well-deserved buzz around Johnson's most recent role with the teaser already out there.

Fans have been eagerly awaiting the debut of Black Adam in theatres as its release date approaches. You can better comprehend Johnson's career development and how this came about by revisiting his filmography.

Some kids discovered a board game where the game's world would occasionally stray into our own, which is how this legendary adventure movie franchise got its start. However, a contemporary rendition of the story invites players into the Jumanji universe via a video game. The first two episodes of the series have already been made available, and they star Dwayne Johnson as the series' protagonist with Kevin Hart, Karen Gillan, and Jack Black.

The films' compelling stories, exhilarating action sequences, and big themes like transhumanism and mortality make them excellent family-friendly fantasy movies. Hart and Johnson also turned out to be one of the funniest comedy teams we didn't realise we needed!

In the world of Dwayne Johnson movies, this one stood out as a thrilling robbery adventure. This film, which stars the amusing Ryan Reynolds and the endearing Gal Gadot, became a huge hit because of its complex plot, lavish locations, and clever jokes.

This 2017 remake of a TV show from the 1990s offers a contemporary perspective on the lifeguard industry. This film stood out for fans as a unique twist on the typical contentious plots starring Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, and Priyanka Chopra. It had controversy hiding in plain sight, off-the-charts combat sequences, and funny comic parts.

Jungle Cruise should be perfect for you if you're seeking a daring jungle adventure with Johnson as one of the leads.

Florence Pugh plays WWE champion Paige, who excelled over her brother to become a star while growing up in a loud wrestling family. As Dwayne Johnson portrays himself as a renowned wrestler ushering in a new generation of opponents, everyone involved wins.

The Fast & Furious Franchise

It is impossible to separate the movies of the Fast & Furious franchise. Johnson plays a significant role in the transformation of this franchise from a decent run of car-racing movies into one of the best and most well-liked action franchises on the globe, even though he doesn't arrive until the fifth iteration and sits out much of the seventh.

Johnson portrays Maui, a hero whose careless exploration and career of coasting on charm have destroyed the Earth, in this stunning Disney animated film. Johnson cleverly flips his usual on-screen persona for this character. Additionally, he expanded his vocal range, and his incredible butter voice nailed every song.

Nobody questions the fact that Johnson acts so well, even though it seems to be one of the few elements in his films. In this mash-up of Die Hard and The Towering Inferno, Johnson scales the tallest skyscraper in the world, complete with interior jungles and even a holodeck suite, to save his family from gun-toting arsonists.

While Kevin Hart was a popular student in high school, Johnson experienced bullying. When they crossed paths again at a reunion years later, it came out that Hart had transformed into a lifeless corporate pawn and Johnson had become an elite international spy. It follows that they team up to save the planet.

Central Intelligence is a delightfully funny and beautiful movie that truly explores the long-lasting effects of bullying in childhood, despite what it might seem like on paper.

Johnson gives one of the best performances of his whole career in the scene where he confronts the bully from high school and loses it.

Ron Paul: It’s Time To Tell Biden We Say ‘No!’ To Nuclear War OpEd – Eurasia Review

Posted: at 4:34 pm

Last week the New York Times ran a shocking article claiming that the US intelligence community believes the Ukrainian government to be responsible for the August attack that killed Darya Dugina, the daughter of a prominent Russian philosopher.

Surely the established narrative that Ukraine is a model western democracy standing strong for our shared values against an aggressive Russian invader is damaged with reporting that Kiev conducted an al-Qaeda style attack on an innocent civilian inside Russia. The murder of Dugina was a textbook definition of terrorism, which is, the use of violence or the threat of violence, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political goals.

Just over a month later, the Nordstream pipelines were blown up, seemingly ending at least in the near term the possibility that Germany may find a way to save its economy by mending fences with its main energy supplier. A leading Polish politician thanked the US for doing the job.

Then over the weekend, the bridge connecting mainland Russia to Crimea was bombed, killing at least six civilians and leaving part of the bridge under water. Traffic was restored hours after the attack, but Russian President Vladimir Putin placed the blame on Ukraines intelligence service. We all know that Ukraine relies on its US masters, so we can assume the US provided the intelligence allowing the targeting of the bridge.

There is a pattern here. More and more brazen attacks are being launched against Russia and Washington is doing little to hide US fingerprints. Why?

The Biden Administration seems to be moving us closer to nuclear war over Ukraine and Biden himself seems to know it. Last week he said, Putin is not joking when he talks about potential use of tactical nuclear weapons or biological or chemical weapons For the first time since the Cuban missile crisis, we have a direct threat of the use [of nuclear weapons] if in fact things continue down the path they are going.

So the question is if he knows that his proxy war against Russia is moving us closer to the unthinkable nuclear annihilation why does his Administration persist in crossing red line after red line? Apparently, Bidens experts believe that Putin is bluffing and will do nothing about the Dugina assassination, the Nordstream pipeline sabotage, and the Kerch Bridge attack.

But what if theyre wrong?

Normally foreign policy action should be weighed on a cost/benefit basis. Will adopting one particular policy benefit the United States more than the risks involved? In this case there is absolutely nothing on the positive side of the ledger. Will the security and prosperity of the United States benefit more from regime change in Russia than it would suffer should nuclear war break out?

It doesnt seem all that hard. No.

So whats going on here? Why does the US Administration with the support of most Republicans in Congress continue to send tens of billions of dollars in military aid and move us toward nuclear war over a conflict that has nothing at all to do with the United States?

The time to end US participation in this war is yesterday. And if it takes millions of Americans in the streets peacefully protesting while demanding that their representatives stop this madness, then bring it on. Tomorrow may be too late.

The Moment the Republican Party Lost Control – The New Republic

Posted: at 4:34 pm

In Partisans, Hemmer picks up that story where she left off in Messengers of the Right, but with a fresh insight: that Reagans triumph was the end of an old regime, not the beginning of a new one. As Hemmer argues, the opening for populists to make their case was the strategic vacuum created by the end of the Cold War in 1989: Republicans no longer had the fight against communism to unify conservatives of many different tendencies. Reagan had also laid the groundwork for a new kind of presidency, one that promised disruption. Yet, although he attended to traditional conservative valuesdefunding the welfare state and spending lavishly on the militaryReagan largely avoided divisive cultural issues. Right-wing anger festered as it became clear in the 1980s that eliminating abortion and affirmative action, and restoring school prayer, were nowhere on the Republican Partys agenda. A young congressman named Newt Gingrich complained that Reagan had not polarized the country enough. He should have been running against liberals and radicals, Gingrich wrote in a journal published by the conservative Heritage Foundation after the 1984 election.

Although Reagans sunny, optimistic style contrasts sharply with Trumps lament of American carnage, he, too, successfully distracted voters from his lack of policy achievements by blowing the smoke that his voters wanted to inhale. As economic journalist William Greider wrote in December 1984, a few weeks after Reagan thumped Democrat Walter Mondale by 18 points, the president cruised to victory on a gauzy cloud of lies and obfuscation. Even journalists had yielded to the techniques of mass propaganda, Greider wrote, large lies told through the calculated repetition of soothing imagery and potent symbolism. The harsh facts of contradictory realities were no match for it. If the recent election describes the future, he continued, then Americans are being reduced to a nation of befogged sheep, beguiled by false images and manipulated ruthlessly.

Well, hello. And while that new voting public would not emerge full-blown until 2016, populisms capacity to disrupt old arrangements became clear by 1992. In Hemmers telling, the possibility of a populist president in the Trump mold emerged when mainstream GOP strategists understood that Pat Buchanans bid for the Republican nomination, and the independent candidacy of Texas tech billionaire Ross Perot, generated a fervor that Reaganismwith its focus on abstract economic theories and weak response to culture wars issues like feminism, immigration, and gay rightslacked. Buchanans nativist, isolationist, racist, and homophobic appeal to old-style Cold War conservatives resonated with a younger generation of aggrieved white candidates and voters who were coming out of the shadows. Its no accident, Hemmer points out, that only one week before Buchanan entered the race, David Dukean active Nazi, and former Klansmanannounced his own campaign for the Republican presidential nomination.

Paul Ryan: Trumps unelectability will be palpable by 2024 – The Hill

Posted: at 4:34 pm

Former SpeakerPaul Ryan(R-Wis.) on Thursday said that former President Trumps unelectability will be palpable by the 2024 presidential election and that the next Republican nominee will likely be someone else.

I think Trumps unelectability will be palpable by then. We all know that he will lose. We all know that he is so much more likely to lose the White House than anybody else running for president on our side of the aisle, so why would we want to go with that? Ryan said in an interview with Teneo for its Insights Series.

Ryan is vice chairman of Teneo, a public relations and CEO advisory firm.

The only reason he stays where he is is because everybodys afraid of him. Theyre afraid of him going after them, hurting their own ambition. But as soon as you get the herd mentality going, its unstoppable, Ryan said.

He noted Trumps lack of strength in polls that consider him as the hypothetical 2024 Republican candidate and said hes sure the former president will be aware of that.

Whether he runs or not, I dont really know if it matters. Hes not going to be the nominee, I dont think, Ryan said.

The former Speaker posited that the Republican presidential primary will be flooded with candidates, dividing up the vote until Trump gets the plurality though he didnt think that was the most likely case.

Its not like [Trump] is going to reverse the impression that suburban voters have on him. That cake is baked, Ryan said.

Ryan also underscored the importance of suburban American voters in this years midterm elections, noting that Democrats are likely to seize on abortion and Trump as key voting issues, while Republicans will emphasize the U.S. economy.

Democrats, the former Speaker predicted, will work to make the 2022 race about Trump to get their base to the polls, pulling focus from sky-high, persistent inflation.

[Trump] is the Democrats weapon against us. Hes a cudgel against us, especially in our swing districts, Ryan said.

Paul Newman recalls losing his only son Scott to addiction in memoir: I never thought it would be fatal – Fox News

Posted: at 4:34 pm

Before Paul Newman passed away, the Hollywood star reflected on the loss of his only son.

Scott Newman, a fellow actor, died in 1978 at age 28 from a drug and alcohol overdose. Newman, who passed away in 2008 at age 83, detailed his heartbreak in a memoir published posthumously titled "Paul Newman: The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man." Its out on Tuesday.

Newman began writing his book in the 80s with the help of screenwriter Stewart Stern, who in turn spoke to dozens of the actors friends and associates. It was recently found in Newman's Connecticut home where his widow, Joanne Woodward, still resides.

In the book, Newman feared that Scott felt he was in competition with his famous father.

"I kept thinking he was going through a phase of adolescent bad judgment," wrote Newman in an excerpt obtained by People magazine on Friday. "I never thought it would be fatal."

"Was there some way I might have told him he didnt have to be like me?" Newman wondered. "That he didnt have to do macho things and could just be himself?"

"Many are the times I have gotten down on my knees and asked for Scotts forgiveness," Newman continued. "I ask for forgiveness for that part of me which provided the impetus for his own destruction. What would it have taken to avert that? Im not certain, but I dont think I could have gone into films and been a movie star. I couldnt have drunk."

Newman was a father of six Scott and five daughters. He described his feelings of guilt and helplessness over his son, noting that "being a star throws everything out of whack for your kids."

"There is even something grotesque in saying, Forgive me," wrote Newman. "The energy up there that represents that kid will just give me the finger and say, Well, what am I supposed to do with that?"

In the book, Newman also described how heavy drinking impacted him.

"In the early 1970s, I think I took it as far as it could go, before realizing I had taken it that far," he wrote. "For someone as controlled as I am, to experience the delight, the luxury, of being out of control, and to keep yourself constantly at risk, is simply pleasurable."

"There are terrible things that happen with booze," he reflected. "I marvel that I survived them."

In 2021, publisher Alfred A. Knopf announced that the book will explore Newmans thoughts on "acting, directing, boyhood, family, fame, Hollywood, Broadway, love, his first marriage, his 50-year marriage to Joanne Woodward, drinking, politics, racing, his ultimate ride to stardom, and aging gracefully."

"Through Newmans voice, and the voices of others, the book captures the paradoxical and unstoppable rise of a star who wrestled with doubts, believing he was inferior to Marlon Brando and James Dean, and yet transcended his hunk status to become an Oscar-winning actor, champion race car driver, social activist, and entrepreneur whose philanthropy has generated nearly a billion dollars for charitable causes," according to Knopf.

"This result is a portrait of the actor in full, from his early days to his years in the Navy, from his start in Hollywood to his rise to stardom, and with an intimate glimpse of his family life," the statement added.
