Innovent Announces NMPA Granted New Indication Approval for SULINNO (Adalimumab Injection) in China for the Treatment of Polyarticular Juvenile…

Posted: November 29, 2020 at 6:06 am

SAN FRANCISCO and SUZHOU, China, Nov. 23, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Innovent Biologics, Inc. (Innovent) (HKEX: 01801), a world-class biopharmaceutical company that develops, manufactures and commercializes high quality medicines for the treatment of cancer, metabolic, autoimmune and other major diseases, today announced that SULINNO (adalimumab injection), a recombinant human anti-TNF- monoclonal antibody drug, has been officially approved by the National Medical Products Administration (NMPA) of China for the treatment of polyarticular juvenile idiopathic arthritis (pJIA), which is the fourth approved indication of SULINNO in China. On September 2, 2020, SULINNO was approved by NMPA for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and psoriasis.

Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) is defined as arthritis with an unknown cause lasting at least 6 weeks in children aged 16 years or younger. Arthritis is divided into oligarthritis <5 jointsand polyarthritis. Polyarthritis can be further divided into rheumatoid factor (RF)-negative polyarthritis and RF-positive polyarthritis. It is estimated RF-negative polyarticular JIA affects 1 to 4 per 100,000 children annually. Less commonly, RF-positive polyarticular JIA occurs in an estimated 0.3 to 0.7 per 100,000 children each year. JIA occurs in children at a young age, and is often accompanied by many complications that will lead to high rates of defects, disability and mortality when left untreated, deeply impacting the quality of life in children. Early aggressive therapy leads to improved outcomes and prevents potential disease complications.

Since the launch of adalimumab, it has been approved worldwide for the treatment of seventeen diseases, including rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, psoriasis, psoriasis arthritis, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, crohn's disease (including pediatric crohn's disease), ulcerative colitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, uveitis, etc. The efficacy and safety of adalimumab has been well recognized globally, and adalimumab injection is widely used in the North America and Europe. It has been consistently recommended in multiple diagnostic and therapeutic guidelines for the treatment of these diseases, and its significant efficacy has been universally recognized. SULINNO is adalimumab biosimilar developed by Innovent, and its clinical results were published in the Inaugural Issue of The Lancet Rheumatology in 2019. The launch of SULINNO has provided more Chinese patients with high-quality and relatively affordable adalimumab injection, bringing hope and opportunities to more patients.

Dr. Qian Lei, Senior Director of Medical Sciences and Strategies of Special Diseases of Innovent, stated: "Not only does Juvenile idiopathic arthritic lead to functional impairment and decrease in quality of life and social participation in children, but also places a huge economic burden on their families. The approval of SULINNO will provide a high-quality and accessible treatment option for children with polyarticular idiopathic arthritis in China. We hope that this product will benefit more children with polyarticular idiopathic arthritis and their families, allowing them to receive early treatment with high-quality biological drugs.''

About SULINNO

SULINNO is an adalimumab (Humira) biosimilar and a recombinant human anti-TNF- monoclonal antibody independently developed by Innovent. TNF is a proinflammatory cytokine mainly produced by activated macrophages, natural killer cells and T lymphocytes, which is involved in inflammatory and immune responses. Anti-TNF- antibody can bind to human TNF- monomer or trimer, block TNF- binding to the cellular surface receptor, p55 and p75, and neutralize the cytotoxic effect of TNF-, thereby inhibiting the release of TNF- mediated inflammatory factors and cytokines, the adhesion and infiltration of inflammatory cells, the proliferation of fibroblasts and the activation of osteoclasts.

The results of a complete pre-clinical comparison showed that SULINNO has similar in vitro biological activity (binding activity to target antigen TNF- and neutralizing activity), physicochemical property and pharmacokinetic characteristics to those of Humira. The similarities were also demonstrated in pharmacological and toxicological studies. The head-to-head clinical study comparing SULINNO and Humira conducted in patients with ankylosing spondylitis demonstrated a clinical similarity. The study results were published at Inaugural Issue of The Lancet Rheumatology in 2019.

Jake Paul Beats Nate Robinson with Scary Knockout on Tyson-Jones Jr. Fight Card – Bleacher Report

Jordan Strauss/Associated Press

American YouTuber Jake Paul landed an overhand right and knocked outformer NBA player Nate Robinson in the second round of a professional boxing matchat Staples Center in Los Angeles on Saturday.

Paul knocked Robinson once in the first round and another time in the second. Robinson got up both times, but Paul's third knockdown ended the bout.

Robinson landed 10 of his 56 punches, and Paul connected on eight of his 38. However, Paul's punches packed far more power, and that ultimately determined the result.

The two fighters also tied up numerous times in the ring, to the point where the referee routinely had to separate the two before resuming the fight. Paul's reach proved to be a big difference, though, en route to the win.

After the match, Paul said he wanted to fight for a living and listed a long list of fighters he wanted to face, including two-weight class UFC champion Conor McGregor. Paul said he would knock McGregor out, among others.

The bout, which was scheduled for six rounds, was on a six-fight card headlined by an exhibition between former world champions Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr.

The Robinson vs. Paul fight started coming together in May, when Robinson spoke with TMZ Sportsand challenged Paul, an aspiring professional fighter, to a bout.

"I want all the smoke," Robinson said. "I'm a top-tier athlete! I'm putting my everything on the line for (Jake). Let's get it done. It's that simple."

The deal got done two months later.

The two talked trash in the months leading up to the fight, withPaul notably tellingTMZ Sportsthat he would "100 percent" knock Robinson out in Round 1.

"First round. First round. 100 percent, easy," Paul said.

"Literally...if you're home, and you're a human, bet your house on the first-round knockout."

Robinson thought otherwise.

"Yeah, I aint fought nobody," Robinson told Paul, per Jake Donovan of Boxing Scene. "But Im fighting you, and Im gonna beat your ass."

Robinson trained hard for this fight, asRyan Songaliaof Ring TV noted.

"He's trained by former pro Ron Johnson, and says he's in the gym with WBC super middleweight titleholder David Benavidez and his father," Songalia wrote.

"Floyd Mayweather Jr. has reportedly called up Robinson and offered to open up his Las Vegas gym to train with him, and Terence Crawford is said to have made a similar offer."

Robinson also had some sweet boxing shoes lined up for this match:

Robinson played in the NBA from 2005-2016 and had never boxed before.Paul has one professional fight to his name, aTKO winover Ali Eson Gib in January.

As Songalia noted, the fight was battled with 10-ounce gloves and no headgear. Robinson weighed in at 181 pounds for the fight, and Paul was at 189.

Films ‘Uncle Frank’ And ‘Hillbilly Elegy’ Are Two Cluelessly Condescending Hollywood Trips To The Heartland – WBUR

Posted: at 6:04 am

Donald Trumps surprise victory in 2016 caught a lot of the chattering classes off guard, prompting a fair amount of self-flagellation about liberal bubbles and such, with the New York Times and other upscale publications dispatching phalanxes of Ivy League-educated reporters to take dictation from white supremacists at Rust Belt diners in a maddeningly repetitive series of articles aiming to explain red states to their readers. One of the key texts from this period was Hillbilly Elegy, a best-selling memoir by CNN commentator J.D. Vance that confirmed a lot of popular conservative media-driven delusions about how the real America is supposedly where fewer Americans live, and that typical Trump voters are pure-hearted, barefoot yokels down by the fishing hole, rather than say, noisy jerks with expensive boats and dudes who like to hang enormous flags from the back of their $50,000 pickup trucks.

Things move slowly in the movie industry, which because of budgets and scheduling logistics can usually be counted on to be a couple of years behind current events. This may explain why two cluelessly condescending Hollywood trips to the heartland are dropping this week on separate streaming services, both feeling like overcompensation measures from 2017. Amazons Uncle Frank is the more benign of the two, with Six Feet Under scribe Alan Ball telling the story of a gay man coming out of the closet in 1970s South Carolina. The same day, Netflix unveils Ron Howards horrendous adaptation of Hillbilly Elegy, a staggeringly inauthentic attempt at cornpone melodrama that plays like this years Cats, except with screaming rednecks instead of singing strays.

The best part of Uncle Frank is the reserved dignity Paul Bettany brings to its title character, an NYU professor whose niece Beth (played by Sophia Lillis, the Molly Ringwald lookalike from It) wistfully recalls his words of wisdom and neatly-clipped fingernails. These two dreamy, curious souls remain a world apart from the dutiful wives and beer-swilling good ole boys at Bledsoe family gatherings, which are occasionally terrorized by quick-tempered patriarch Daddy Mac (Stephen Root), who has little patience for his fancy-pants, big city son.

Theres a hint of the movie that might have been when Beth enrolls at NYU, the young farm girl seeing a larger world for the first time and discovering that her uncle lives in sin with Wally (Peter Macdissi) an extremely endearing Saudi immigrant who is considerably less discreet than his life partner. Alas, Daddy Mac drops dead from a heart attack and the trio must take a road trip back to South Carolina, with Uncle Frank confronting a buried trauma that takes the form of a gradually expanding flashback and assorted other plot contrivances too groan-worthy to be recounted here.

Balls only other feature directorial credit is the execrable 2007 Towelhead, and though he may have won an Oscar for scripting American Beauty, hell always be a TV writer through and through. (I spent 1999 screaming about how his tragic ending to that bizarrely overpraised cultural curio was kicked off by a misunderstanding out of Threes Company, with Chris Cooper mistaking his son rolling a joint for performing fellatio in such klutzy fashion you could easily imagine Don Knotts Mr. Furley doing the same before bugging his eyes out at the audience.) For Uncle Frank, Ball has assembled an entire seasons worth of excellent actors and intriguing storylines, then tries to stuff them all into 95 minutes.

Allegedly the protagonist, Beth gets lost in the shuffle and most of the time it feels like Ball would really rather be writing for Wally. Fine performers like Lois Smith, Judy Greer and Margo Martindale are stuck sitting around the living room with little to do, the latter seemingly only here because I think theres some sort of law that you arent allowed to make a movie like this without Margo Martindale. As in American Beauty, the third act is thrown into motion by a dumb, forehead-smacking plot device that nobody would believe in a million years. I suppose one could say the same for Balls left-field happy ending, yet I kind of fell for it myself simply because Steve Zahn is one of the greatest actors in the world who can sell me on just about anything.

There are filmmakers like David Gordon Green, Lee Daniels and Steven Soderbergh who understand the American South and seem to sense it in their bones. Then theres Ron Howard, a capable studio craftsman of genial, populist entertainments who blunders badly whenever he tries to make important prestige pictures. Its amusing to note that Howard grew up in front of the cameras on The Andy Griffith Show, as the blighted Ohio of his Hillbilly Elegy is like Mayberrys oxy-addled inverse, full of boarded-up small businesses and junk cars in the yard. Yet, it feels as false as any sitcom set, a Hollywood vision of poverty with its actresses dutifully uglied up for award consideration. These characters arent inhabited so much as they are placed on display like zoo animals for further study. Whatevers happening here, it isnt empathy.

Screenwriter Vanessa Taylor has stripped away all the history and sociological commentary from Vances memoir, leaving a tediously straightforward story of a dull law student (Gabriel Basso) who almost blows a big job interview because he has to go home and deal with his ungrateful, histrionic mother (Amy Adams) after she overdoses again. His trip is peppered with semi-coherent flashbacks to the young Vance coming of age as an overweight, neer-do-well lout like all the others in his town, until the one day he overhears his Mamaw (a grotesque Glenn Close) asking for a handout from the Meals on Wheels guy. J.D. promptly quits boozing and drugging, gets a job and goes to Yale, unlike all those other shiftless layabouts in this godforsaken backwater.

Hillbilly Elegy peddles the kind of bootstrap fantasies that happily ignores any realities of addiction and systemic inequality, leaving Close and Adams in a competition as to who can play the biggest gargoyle. These two marvelous actresses have been also-rans at so many Oscar ceremonies (Adams has gone home empty-handed six times, Close seven) their garish, gargantuan performances here have me honestly worried what they might do if they dont win this time. Ive seen the picture described as a white Tyler Perry movie, which I cant get on board with because at least Tyler Perry movies are fun to watch and have something to say about the underrepresented communities in which they take place. Devoid of politics or insight, Hillbilly Elegy is just the story of how some jerk from Yale got a fancy job at a law firm.

Amazon Prime's Uncle Frank and Netflix's Hillbilly Elegy both start streaming on Wednesday, Nov. 25.

Rutgers opens season with 86-63 victory over Sacred Heart – On The Banks

Posted: at 6:04 am

The opening night of the most anticipated season in decades amidst a global pandemic felt normal and very strange all in the same game. Rutgers struggled to get going offensively early on, took a commanding lead and was able to cruise to a 86-63 victory over a Sacred Heart team that never gave up.

It was scoreless for almost three minutes into the season before Montez Mathis dunked off a fast break to give Rutgers its first points of the season. Surprise starter Cliff Omoruyi scored for the first time in his collegiate career, making 1 of 2 from the free throw line, Ron Harper Jr. made his first basket and Geo Baker split his free throw attempts to give the Scarlet Knights a 6-0 lead with 15:26 left in the first half.

Sacred Heart responded with three three-pointers to cut the Rutgers lead to 12-11 midway through the opening frame. RU then responded with a 12-2 run spurred by 6 points from Harper Jr., who was settling into the leading role nicely. SHU got within 6 at 25-19, but the Scarlet Knights closed out the half on a 15-4 run to lead 40-25 at the break.

Rutgers shot 51% from the floor in the opening frame while holding Sacred Heart to just 29%. Harper Jr. led the way with 12 points and 5 rebounds. Paul Mulcahy displayed his development and versatility, playing multiple positions while putting up 8 points, 4 assists and 2 steals in the first half. Omoruyi was a force inside and swapped 9 boards in his first half on the banks.

The only concern was Geo Baker, who attempted just 1 shot and left late in the half after appearing to tweak his ankle.

He did not return in the second half, which makes sense even if its a minor injury. Here is Baker coming back on the floor for the second half on crutches.

Rutgers fans became nauseous hours before even eating Thanksgiving dinner. Hopefully, its not a major issue and Baker doesnt miss significant time. Ill report any updates after the postgame press conference with head coach Steve Pikiell.

The second half doubled as a dunk party for Omoruyi, who had several highlight reel slams to spur Rutgers to a 50-30 lead just three minutes after the break. Sacred Heart never got closer than 15 points the rest of the way.

Rutgers tried out different lineups and even pressed late in the second half as Pikiell was getting the rust out of his team. It wasnt a performance that will inspire hope that the shooting has improved, as RU shot 1 of 8 from three-point range and were just 5 of 15 from the free throw line. However, they did shoot 61% from the floor overall after dominating with points in the paint, holding a 72-32 advantage. They also held Sacred Heart to just 37% shooting, but the Pioneers almost equaled that mark from behind the arc, making 9 of 25 from three-point range. On the boards, Rutgers were +15 and held a commanding 26-4 advantage on fast break points. Even without Baker, RU took care of the basketball by committing just 9 turnovers, while SHU had 14. The Scarlet Knights shared the basketball well too, dishing out 23 assists on 40 made field goals.

Harper Jr. performed well in a starring role, finishing with a game high 18 points on 50% shooting from the floor, along with 10 rebounds and 2 assists. He asserted himself even when Baker was on the floor at the start, which is a positive sign that his mindset is more aggressive after being passive at times last season. His +/- of 28 was the best on either team.

Montez Mathis had some strong dunks and appeared to warrant the offseason praise Pikiell gave him, finishing with 17 points on 8 of 15 shooting while adding 3 assists and 3 steals.

Mulcahy looked much improved and was much more assertive in the season opener compared to last season. He finished with a career high 15 points on a perfect 7 of 7 shooting night. His passing skills were on full display, as he dished out a career high 7 assists and committed just 1 turnover. He added 4 boards and 2 steals. His ability to play different positions and his unselfishness is infectious for this team. If he can continue to look for his shot the way he did tonight it will be a big step forward for him.

Omoruyis debut was impressive and his athleticism was through the roof. He established control of the glass from the opening tip, giving Rutgers a firm grip of the paint. He finished with a double-double in his first career game at Rutgers with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He wasnt challenged by Sacred Heart like he will be against better competition, but it was a very encouraging debut.

Jacob Young played the role of distributor, dishing out 8 assists while only committing 2 turnovers and adding 5 points and 2 steals. Myles Johnson was efficient off the bench, finishing with 10 points on 5 of 5 shooting, as well as 4 rebounds and 2 assists.

Overall, it was a good start to the season but obviously the health of Geo Baker hangs over the RAC like a thick, black cloud. The injury didnt appear too serious but its also important for him to get in the flow of the season and not miss significant time. Steve Pikiell said that Geo Baker suffered a bad ankle sprain. He cited faith in trainer Rich Campbell to do as good a job possible in his recovery. His status is unknown for now but it seems unlikely hell play Friday vs. FDU.

The important thing after this win is that Rutgers handles the quick turnaround time as they host FDU in less than 48 hours on Friday night at 7 p.m. ET on BTN, followed by Hofstra with even less recovery time after that. The Scarlet Knights are 1-0 and the season has finally begun!

Murkowski calls on Trump to begin transition to Biden – Must Read Alaska

Posted: at 6:04 am

Sen. Lisa Murkowski of Alaska has stated on Twitter that the time has come for President Donald Trump to begin the transition process to the Biden presidency.

President Trump has had the opportunity to litigate his claims, and the courts have thus far found them without merit, shewrote on Sunday. A pressure campaign on state legislators to influence the electoral outcome is not only unprecedented but inconsistent with our democratic process. It is time to begin the full and formal transition process.

Not that Trump would listen to Murkowski. The two have a simmering animosity toward each other that has become more pronounced in recent months and was said to be a sticking point that was holding up the signing of the A2A Alberta to Alaska railroad agreement.

Trump has yet to concede the election and has pending legal challenges underway in battleground states.

Murkowski is among a growing number in the GOP that are now publicly speaking out that it is time for Trump to concede. Others include Mitt Romney of Utah, Susan Collins of Maine, and Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania.

BRAD STAMAN: Is Wyoming really not real? – Scottsbluff Star Herald

Posted: at 5:56 am

God, Jesus and His life, death and resurrection, are other good examples. You can, like doubting Thomas, question until you see the nail scared hands, but it doesnt change the truth.

For the believers of this imaginary land, be careful, if you ever get out of your world of concrete and somehow find your way into the land that doesnt exist you will not want to leave. Not only can you see the stars at night, hear yourself think, and get lost watching cotton candy clouds dance across those western skies you will find yourself surrounded by some of the nicest people who dont really exist.

Now hearing that description of this land might add to your belief in the theory, A place that nice cannot be real!

Well, as for the 97,914 square miles of land which includes Yellowstone National Park, Devils Tower, lots of beautiful wide open spaces, and Torringtons Bread Doctor, maybe its all a dream. Hard to buy into, but if you believe go tell the estimated 578,759 people who call this land home they dont exist. However, make sure if you tell them the state of Wyoming isnt real, do it from a distance, if not, after they get done laughing, you might lose a few teeth from the non-existent hand that knocks you to the ground.

Think mink: That fancy fur sprouts from one of our common critters – Paducah Sun

Posted: at 5:56 am

Most people primarily associate mink with luxurious and nowadays politically incorrect coats.

That famous fur known to adorn the exterior of celebrities, the rich and famous, started out on the exterior of slinky, fierce creatures that still prowl our environment. Mink are widely distributed in our part of the world, probably more abundant than they have been in decades, yet seldom noticed by people.

The American mink (there is a European counterpart) is a semi-aquatic carnivore that is native to most of North America, excluding the desert Southwest. It is a member of a family that gives us smaller weasels and larger river otters. Like its cousins, the mink has an elongated, streamlined body, short legs, and smallish head with short ears.

Like the familiar fur, the live mink is a rich brown to black. The soft undercoat is covered with a longer oily fur that is waterproof and suits the minks lifestyle that puts it in the water much of the time. (The mink is a big-time swimmer and diver, capable of doing business submerged for several minutes at a time.)

Mink are only about squirrel size female mink comparable to the largest gray squirrels, and the males similar to or a little larger than whopper fox squirrels. If you could get one to hold still and put a yardstick against a mink, you would find that its overall length is in the range of 20-27 inches. About one-third of the overall length is tail.

The weight of a male mink ranges to about 2 pounds, 3 ounces at tops, while a female may weigh little more than half that. The aggressive attitude of the mink, however, belies its size. They are robust, toothy critters that hunt, kill and eat animals that are larger than themselves.

Mink prey on small stuff like frogs, crayfish, fish from the water as well as mice, voles and other tiny rodents. But bigger males chase down or ambush such as rabbits and muskrats, killing with a bite to the throat.

A mink always operates along a permanent water source, a river, stream or lake. Here in western Kentucky, abundant waterways and impoundments create excellent mink habitat.

We fail to see how routine mink are because their lifestyle is chiefly nocturnal, and what happens along the riverbank stays along the riverbank.

One area of mink activity hereabouts that sometimes gets them noticed (but perhaps not identified) is around our lakes and rivers where there is riprap to stop erosion at waters edge. Mink eagerly hunt these limestone shorelines for access to fish dead and alive as well as to hunt other stuff like rodents that hide in the rock crevices and pockets, drawn to the riprap banks for the same food sources.

Mink are an infrequent sight along wild creek and river courses, but they are sometimes seen around riprap at local state parks on Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley and the associated dams and tailwaters on the Tennessee and Cumberland rivers. The presence of people more frequently around these favorite habitats exposes mink to more observation, especially when they venture out in daylight.

When not conducting mink business, the water-friendly carnivores typically use some type of den along a river or lake. Living solitary, a mink needs only a pocket in an undercut bank or a hollow log for todays accommodations. Sometimes a mink will occupy a muskrat den, usually after killing all the residents of that den. Hey, food and lodging in one.

Mink will use an abandoned beaver bank den or a stand-alone lodge, but much larger beaver are quite formidable themselves and it is unlikely that a mink will displace an adult beaver from where it wants to be.

The enemies of a mink, especially young mink, are mostly great horned owls, bobcats and coyotes. Add to that humans, although people are not as much of a factor nowadays.

People long have trapped native wild mink for their fur. The luxurious fur is not nearly as valuable nowadays, however. There is a stigma for many about wearing fur now, and lower demand results. In the big markets for fur demand, Russia and China, faltering economies further flogged by COVID-19 fallout presently have almost paralyzed the fur trade.

From the supply side, there are mink ranches out there that produce a steady supply of mink fur that satisfies much of the faltering demand.

The value of a wild mink pelt these days is likely $5 to $10, and that is provided any buyer with a need can be located. The word is, much mink and other furs taken in last years trapping season are still stored unsold in auction houses.

Trapping for most all species has been in decline for years, and presently it is in a low ebb. Consequently, the harvest of wild mink is especially low nowadays, practically at a standstill.

The effect of little harvest allows the mink population to flourish. It has not gone crazy like, say, the raccoon population, but it is doing very well.

Here in western Kentucky, chances are there are far more mink than what meet our diurnal eyes. Maybe that knowledge is pleasing enough.

But if you like the idea of wild fur and want a schmaltzy coat, the u-pick possibilities are out there.

One of Americas favorite pastimes, television celebrated its 80th birthday in 2019. Philo T. Farnsworth, a Mormon farm boy, invented TV at the age of 14. Self-taught, Farnsworth quickly realized that the early TV technology that was already in existence would never work fast enough to display actual pictures. So he set out to create a new electron-based system that would be clearer and could have some commercial value. In 1928, he demonstrated his invention for a group of reporters, in 1939, it was introduced to the public. The rest, as they say, is history.

Biden has white men to thank for putting him in the White House – USA TODAY

While Trump made surprising gains in other demographics, Biden made unexpected gains among white male voters in the election. Here is how he keeps them.

President-elect Joe Biden has white men to thank.

Two years ago, I wrote that Democrats and progressives needed to appeal to white men and address the problems particularly of non-college educated white men. Although the party may not have been so explicit about what the problems of this population are and the ways in which they would tackle them, at least at the presidential level, Democrats were successful in winning many of them over.

Donald Trump made gains among virtually every other demographic Black men and women, Hispanics,Asian-Americans, and even white women. The one significant demographic in which his support cratered compared to 2016 was among white men, who make up more than one-third of the electorate. Biden made an impressive 11 percentage point gain among white, college-educated menand a 6 percentage point gain among white, non-college educatedmen, supposedly Trumps core constituency.

This is a big deal in two ways. One, which has been widely noted, is that Trump made surprising gains among nonwhite Americans. The second, which has not been extensively examined, is the shift of white men to the former Vice President.

What does this mean. The first spells trouble for the Democrats. The second is unexpectedly good news for them.

Some might ascribe Bidens gains to the simple fact that he is male and Hillary Clinton is female. Or, to his Scranton birthplace, in Americas old industrial heartland. Perhaps, men are more prone to think: Kick the bum out, regardless of the bums party. Despite the massive womens rallies the day after Trump was inaugurated in 2017 and all the pre-election talk about white suburban women being key to Democrats electoral hopes, the most important gender dynamic in this years election occurred among white men.

How is this possible? Driving through red states or watching TV news, there were white men galore with Trump flags hanging out of their pickup truck windows and crowds of men in MAGA hats. These were real, but pollsters, mediaand Republicans fell for this clich.

The Biden campaign can celebrate this years shift, but they must not take it for granted. The new administration has a very full plate a pandemic, a flailing economy, a host of foreign-policy challenges, and much more but it needs to address the problems that white, primarily (but not exclusively) working class men face.

Election 2020 exit polls: Political pundits utterly failed to predict Donald Trump's voters

In my two prior articles and my book on these men, "Man Out: Men on the Sidelines of American Life," I pointed to a couple of indicators: The millions of men who have left the labor force, increasing health and mental health problems, isolation and disconnection from family and children, and what it means to be a man during a time of changing norms that predated #MeToo.

Many of these problems have only worsened during the last two years. In October 2018, when I wrote my first article on these issues, 71.6%of white men over 20 were not working; last month, the percentage was down to 70.5%. While median inflation-adjusted incomes for white men have gone up in the last two years, they were essentially the same during President Trumps first year and 1973 44 years of stagnant wages. The latest CDC life expectancy statistics for white men before COVID show them dying at an earlier age than in 2014, although Black life expectancy remains lower. Suicide rates among white men are three and a half times higher than for white women, and are significantly higher than among Blacks, Hispanics, and Asian Americans. By one key markers of social class, educational attainment, there is ample evidence that those with less than a college degree are more likely to be out of the labor force and in poor health.

Biden's top unification task: Expose Trump team wrongdoing, restore trust in government

Democrats have taken for granted people of color and women something they no longer can do after this years election. There are too many problems to name affecting both populations that the Biden administration needs to address only beginning with the overarching scourges of racism and sexism. Democrats have long been advocates for women and minorities, as they should be, but as I wrote in January 2019, they are silent because they are implausibly unaware of such issues or, more likely, less willing to highlight them because doing so would be deemed politically incorrect.

The president-elect is a compassionate man and seems to recognize many of white mens problems. His administration should work on them not only because all Americans deserve a chance at a good life but also because keeping or expanding white male support is essential for Democrats fortunes in 2022 and 2024.
