Calorie Restriction and Fasting Diets: What Do We Know?

You may have heard about calorie restriction and fasting diets and wondered why they're getting so much attention in the news. Aren't they just other terms for dieting to lose weight?
No, they're not. Calorie restriction means reducing average daily caloric intake below what is typical or habitual, without malnutrition or deprivation of essential nutrients. In a fasting diet, a person does not eat at all or severely limits intake during certain times of the day, week, or month. A practical effect of a fasting diet may be fewer calories because there is less time for regular eating.
These eating patterns are being studied as possible ways to maintain good health and live longer. They are not temporary weight-loss plans. Interest in their potential health and aging benefits stems from decades of research with a variety of animals, including worms, crabs, snails, fruit flies, and rodents. In many experiments, calorie-restricted feeding delayed the onset of age-related disorders and, in some studies, extended lifespan.
Given these results in animals, researchers are studying if and how calorie restriction or a fasting diet affects health and lifespan in people. Many studies have shown that obese and overweight people who lose weight by dieting can improve their health. But scientists still have much to learn about how calorie restriction and fasting affect people who are not overweight, including older adults. They also don't know whether these eating patterns are safe or even doable in the long run. In short, there's not enough evidence to recommend any such eating regimen to the public.
Calorie restriction is a consistent pattern of reducing average daily caloric intake, while fasting regimens primarily focus on the frequency of eating. The fasting diet may or may not involve a restriction in the intake of calories during non-fasting times.
There are a variety of fasting diets, sometimes called "intermittent fasting." You may have read about:
More animal research has been done on calorie restriction than on fasting. In some experiments, calorie restriction is also a form of fasting because the lab animals consume all their daily allotted food within hours and go many more hours without any food.
In these studies, when rodents and other animals were given 10 percent to 40 percent fewer calories than usual but provided with all necessary nutrients, many showed extension of lifespan and reduced rates of several diseases, especially cancers. But, some studies did not show this benefit, and in some mouse strains, calorie restriction shortened lifespan rather than extending it.
In the worm C. elegans, a fasting diet increased lifespan by 40 percent. A study with fruit flies found that calorie restrictionbut not intermittent fastingwas associated with living longer. One study of male mice found that lifelong alternate-day fasting increased longevity, mainly by delaying cancer occurrence rather than slowing other aging processes.
Two National Institute on Aging (NIA)-supported studies in rhesus monkeys sought to find out whether the benefits of calorie restriction are seen in longer-lived species. In both studies, the monkeys were kept on a calorie-restriction diet (30 percent fewer calories than for monkeys in the control groups) for more than 20 years. Although there were differences between the two studiesincluding monkey breed and type of foodboth provided evidence that calorie restriction reduced the incidence of age-related conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. One study found an extension of lifespan, while the other did not. Many of the monkeys are still alive, so the full impact of calorie restriction on their maximum lifespan has yet to be determined.
Some study results suggest that calorie restriction may have health benefits for humans, but more research is needed before we understand its long-term effects. There are no data in humans on the relationship between calorie restriction and longevity.
Some people have voluntarily practiced extreme degrees of calorie restriction over many years in the belief that it will extend lifespan or preserve health. Studies on these individuals have found markedly low levels of risk factors for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The studies have also found many other physiologic effects whose long-term benefits and risks are uncertain, as well as reductions in sexual interest and the ability to maintain body temperature in cold environments. These people generally consume a variety of nutritional supplements, which limits knowing which effects are due to calorie restriction versus other factors.
To conduct a more rigorous study of calorie restriction in humans, NIA supported a pioneering clinical trial called Comprehensive Assessment of Long-term Effects of Reducing Intake of Energy (CALERIE).
In CALERIE, 218 young and middle-aged, normal-weight or moderately overweight adults were randomly divided into two groups. People in the experimental group were told to follow a calorie-restriction diet for 2 years, while those in the control group followed their usual diet.
The study was designed to have participants in the experimental group eat 25 percent fewer calories per day than they had regularly consumed before the study. Although they did not meet this target, they reduced their daily caloric intake by 12 percent and maintained, on average, a 10 percent loss in body weight over 2 years. A follow-up study 2 years after the intervention ended found that participants had sustained much of this weight loss.
It's important to note that calorie-restriction regimens are not starvation diets. The weight loss achieved with calorie restriction in the CALERIE trial resulted in body weights within the normal or overweight range.
Compared to participants in the control group, those in the calorie-restriction group had reduced risk factors (lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol) for age-related diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. They also showed decreases in some inflammatory factors and thyroid hormones. There is some evidence that lower levels of these measures are associated with longer lifespan and diminished risk for age-related diseases. Moreover, in the calorie-restricted individuals, no adverse effects (and some favorable ones) were found on quality of life, mood, sexual function, and sleep.
The calorie-restriction intervention did cause slight declines in bone density, lean body mass, and aerobic capacity (the ability of the body to use oxygen during exercise). However, these declines were generally no more than expected based on participants' weight loss. Other short-term studies have found that combining physical activity with calorie restriction protects against losses of bone, muscle mass, and aerobic capacity.
Some CALERIE participants also experienced brief episodes of anemia (diminished number of circulating red blood cells that carry oxygen through the body). Overall, these findings indicate that while the degree of calorie restriction in CALERIE is safe for normal-weight or moderately obese people, clinical monitoring is recommended.
Most research to date has focused on the weight-loss aspect of fasting, primarily in obese people, and only a few small clinical trials have been conducted. More work is needed to determine which, if any, types of fasting diets have long-term benefits.
Observational studies have been conducted in people who practice fasting in one form or another. In an observational study, the investigator does not determine the treatment to offer and does not randomize subjects into a control group or experimental group. Instead, the investigator records data from real-life situations.
For example, one observational study compared people who routinely fasted (as part of a religious practice or for another reason) to those who did not fast. It found that those who routinely fasted were less likely to have clogged arteries or coronary artery disease. However, the study did not control for other factors that could have affected the results, such as the kind of diet, quality of food consumed, or use of nutritional supplements.
After decades of research, scientists still don't know why calorie restriction extends lifespan and delays age-related diseases in laboratory animals. Do these results come from consuming fewer calories or eating within a certain timeframe? Are the results affected by the diet's mix of nutrients?
Several studies have focused on what occurs inside the body when caloric intake is restricted. In laboratory animals, calorie restriction affects many processes that have been proposed to regulate the rate of aging. These include inflammation, sugar metabolism, maintenance of protein structures, the capacity to provide energy for cellular processes, and modifications to DNA. Another process that is affected by calorie restriction is oxidative stress, which is the production of toxic byproducts of oxygen metabolism that can damage cells and tissues.
Several of these processes were similarly affected by calorie restriction in the human CALERIE trial. However, we do not yet know which factors are responsible for calorie restriction's effects on aging or whether other factors contribute.
Research supported by NIA has also focused on the effects of intermittent fasting. During fasting, the body uses up glucose and glycogen, then turns to energy reserves stored in fat. This stored energy is released in the form of chemicals called ketones. These chemicals help cellsespecially brain cellskeep working at full capacity. Some researchers think that because ketones are a more efficient energy source than glucose, they may protect against aging-related decline in the central nervous system that might cause dementia and other disorders.
Ketones also may inhibit the development of cancer because malignant cells cannot effectively obtain energy from ketones. In addition, studies show that ketones may help protect against inflammatory diseases such as arthritis. Ketones also reduce the level of insulin in the blood, which could protect against type 2 diabetes.
But too many ketones in the blood can have harmful health effects. This is one of the reasons researchers want to understand more about how calorie restriction diets work before recommending them.
Despite a lot of research on calorie restriction and fasting, there are no firm conclusions about the benefits for human health. Here's a summary of the reasons why:
Most calorie-restriction and fasting-diet studies have been in younger people, but researchers are beginning to study older adults. A clinical trial conducted by NIA is testing the 5:2 diet in obese people, age 55 to 70, with insulin resistance. (This is a condition in which cells do not respond normally to the hormone insulin. This can lead to serious diseases such as diabetes.) People in the experimental group can eat at will for 5 days, and then for 2 consecutive days are restricted to 500 to 600 calories per day. The experiment is designed to find out how 8 weeks of the 5:2 diet, compared to a regular diet, affects insulin resistance and the brain chemicals that play a role in Alzheimer's disease.
In the coming years, researchers will continue to explore many unresolved questions. What are the long-term benefits and risks of the various eating patterns? Which diets are feasible as a long-term practice? What specific biological effects on aging and disease are triggered by a particular eating pattern? If a specific way of eating is recommended, at what age is it best to start, and is it safe to continue as you get older?
Scientists are exploring many aspects of calorie restriction and fasting and their effects on people of all ages. Some are conducting clinical studies and trials to learn more. If you are interested in volunteering for this type of research, search ClinicalTrials.gov using keywords such as "intermittent fasting," "time-restricted feeding," or "calorie restriction."
There's insufficient evidence to recommend any type of calorie-restriction or fasting diet. A lot more needs to be learned about their effectiveness and safety, especially in older adults.
You may be tempted to try one of these eating patterns. It's important to make sure that whatever you try provides you with a safe level of nutrition. Talk with your healthcare provider about the benefits and risks before making any significant changes to your eating pattern.

The weather nightmare before Christmas
Tens of millions of Americans will find themselves recalibrating and in some cases canceling holiday plans over the next week, as an exceptionally intense Arctic front plows across most of the eastern two-thirds of the United States during the run-up to Christmas Day.
Below-freezing air will push to the Gulf Coast by Christmas weekend, with readings likely to dip below zero Fahrenheit from Oklahoma to Ohio late this week. On top of this, a bomb cyclone (one that deepens by at least 24 millibars in 24 hours) will race from the Central Plains to the Great Lakes on Friday and Saturday, December 23-24. Fierce winds and heavy snow are expected to produce widespread blizzard conditions and shut down transportation over portions of the Great Lakes and Midwest on one of the years busiest travel weekends.
Heavy rains and high winds will buffet the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast before the front arrives, most likely bringing a burst of cold and a quick shot of snow around Saturday (Christmas Eve).

The Federal DNA Database Unit (FDDU) aids investigations through hit confirmations against individuals whose profiles are in the National DNA Index System (NDIS).
Agencies submit blood or buccal (cheek) samples to the unitfrom individuals who are required by law to do so. These include individuals:
FDDU then produces a DNA profile for each of these individuals and uploads it to the NDIS, which is part of the Combined DNA Index System (CODIS).
These known DNA profiles are then searched against unknown forensic profiles from crime scenes across the country. If a match is identified, the casework laboratory can request FDDU to confirm the offender sample DNA profile.
Once the profile is confirmed, FDDU will release the subject's personal identifying information back to the casework laboratory. This information can then be passed on to investigators in the hopes of apprehending the perpetrator.Thanks to law enforcement agenciesand theirsample submissions, FDDU has uploaded over one million profiles to NDIS and has aided thousands of investigations.
Under the overall direction of the FDDU chief:
On a compliance level, the FDDU is supported by teams of DNA technical specialists and DNA program specialists who have critical responsibilities within the unit for ensuring the quality assurance and quality control of analytical testing, as well as conformance of database operations with established procedural requirements.
Administratively, the unit is supported by a team of management and program analysts with responsibilities for budgetary execution, procurement, inventory, and logistical applications. The unit relies heavily upon an information technology team to support the unit network and overall infrastructure backbone that drives the various operational applications.
From a technology perspective, a DNALaboratory Information Management System (LIMS) is critical for the automated development of specimen works lists, controlling the stepwise progression of each sample through the entire analytical process. The FDDU uses robotic systems in the laboratory to achieve high-throughput processing, allowing for a day-through-evening uninterrupted workflow without human intervention and maximum operational efficiency. A sophisticated software analysis tool (expert system) permits an automated review of resulting DNA data with a reduced level of scientist intervention, increasing throughput rate while consistently meeting or exceeding required performance measures.

Ghost in the Shell (1995) – IMDb

That anime could be this good. I'd thought I'd seen good anime when a friend brought me 'Akira', but this one is just awesome.
It has everything that one could want. An interesting plot, deep thoughts, nice dialog, hot chicks, cool action, neat tech, and animation that puts everything to shame which has ever been produced in the western world.
Now when I watch anime I usually expect (and dread) the scene which will explain something about the fundamental nature of life, the universe, or whatever. This is (the only part) where 'Akira' failed. This is where 'Final Fantasy' went down the drain. But 'Ghost in the Shell' shines here brightly.
While watching it for the first time I had always this nagging feeling that some such scene would turn up and ruin the truly stunning visuals. Not so. After the '2501' monologue the story really comes together and you start to be eager for story development instead of just looking for the many details and extravagant action sequences.
A word on the story: No, you will probably not 'get' the story the first time around. Especially in the English version you will have to make the connection between MoFA, MF, MFA and Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that is easy to get confused over. The whole storyline might not be quite as complicated as understanding some 'Aeon Fluxx' episodes, but you have to rewatch the story to get a feel for the interconnection of the different players - especially if you are not familiar with the Ghost in the Shell literature. The story,thank god, is not dumbed down for the average viewer. This is what makes rewatching it so enjoyable. It has also some nice reflections on what it means to be human - things you may ask of yourself after the movie finishes ('Who knows what's inside our heads. Have you ever seen your own brain?').
The animation is superb, and used to unusual effect. The details are exquisite - especially cloth effects and character motions. There are a few scenes that only have music or an accentuating sound effect in the background while the animators show off their full artistic talent. But it's not just show-off time, the visuals are tied in with the subject and leave the viewer time to reflect on the philosophical/sociological messages (like showing the cybernetic heroine look at tailors' dummies)
In short: This is a must see for anybody who likes anime. Definitely a movie for grown-ups, though, because the graphic violence may disturb kids and the philosophy will go right over their heads.

On Sept. 12, President Biden signed the Executive Order on Advancing Biotechnology and Biomanufacturing Innovation for a Sustainable, Safe and Secure American Bioeconomy.
Specified in that order is the development of genetic engineering technologies and techniques to be able to write circuitry for cells and predictably program biology in the same way in which we write software and program computers, as well as genetic technologies to unlock the power of biological data using computing tools and artificial intelligence.
Additionally, obstacles for commercialization will be reduced so that innovative technologies and products can reach markets faster.
What we have here is, in a nutshell, the creation of a fast-tracked mRNA pipeline.
When, in June, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) quietly implemented a Future Framework scheme to deliver reformulated COVID-19 boosters without additional testing, I predicted that this no testing required formula would spread beyond COVID-19 shots.
And, according to this executive order, thats exactly whats about to happen.
In early September, the FDA also put out medically false and misleading COVID-19 booster campaign messages that prove weve officially entered the era of transhumanism:

Is this the death knell to allopathic medicine?
Historically, gene therapies have had to jump through extra hoops, which is why so few exist on the market. As of 2021, there were 20 gene therapies commercially available.
The worlds first gene therapy trial didnt begin until 1990, so this is still a very new field.
The entire gene therapy field actually collapsed overnight in 1999, when a teenage trial participant died from side effects.
An FDA investigation concluded research had moved too fast and that safety had not been put first.
Progress, thanks to increased caution, slowed from there on.
Such caution is now being thrown to the wind, and its not difficult to predict there will be disastrous ramifications.
Millions will die from poorly tested gene therapies and, eventually, medical research and allopathic medicine will both cease to exist, as survivors vow to have nothing to do with that murderous cabal ever again.
The only way they might be able to keep going is if they are in control of peoples brain function and/or able to force drugs under threat of death, or worse neither of which is impossible at this point, shockingly enough.
In the meantime, were looking at a cornucopia of mRNA shots coming our way.
mRNA flu shots are in the works
Not surprisingly, mRNA flu shots are in the works. While we probably wont see mRNA flu shots during the 2022/2023 winter season, theres every reason to expect theyll be rolled out next year.
On Sept. 14, Pfizer initiated a Phase 3 study, which will test a quadrivalent mRNA-based flu shot on 25,000 American adults.
Pfizer is also exploring mRNA technology that uses self-amplifying RNA for potential use in the future.
Moderna began its Phase 3 mRNA flu jab trial in early June. Its also working on mRNA shots for the respiratory syncytial virus and cytomegalovirus, which is in the herpes family, as well as a SARS-CoV-2-influenza combination shot.
Ultimately, Moderna wants to create an annual mRNA shot that covers all of the top 10 viruses that result in hospitalizations each year.
Its current flu jab candidate, mRNA-1010, encodes for the hemagglutinin, or HA, glycoproteins of four different influenza strains, including influenza A/H1N1, A/H3N2, influenza B/Yamagata and B/Victoria.
According to Moderna:
HA is a major influenza surface glycoprotein that is considered an important target to generate broad protection against influenza and is the primary target of currently available influenza vaccines.
The transhumanist agenda
Over the past three years, Ive written several articles exploring the transhumanist agenda, which all these mRNA shots and genetic technologies are part and parcel of.
Basically, the goal of the transhumanist movement is to transcend biology through technology and to meld human biology with technology and artificial intelligence.
In September 2020, I posted a video with Dr. Carrie Madej (below), in which she suggested we were standing at the crossroads of transhumanism, thanks to the fast-approaching release of mRNA COVID-19 shots.
Since these shots are designed to manipulate your biology, they have the potential to also alter the biology of the entire human race.
Nearly two years later, we still dont know the extent to which they might be doing that, yet more fast-tracked and untested gene therapies are on the way.
One reason why its important to know for certain whether synthetic RNA ends up creating permanent changes in the genome is because synthetic genes are patented.
If they cause permanent changes, humans will contain patented genes, and that brings up very serious questions, seeing how patents have owners and owners have patent rights.
U.S. defense department aims to create human cyborgs
The hydrogel used to preserve the mRNA can also contain nanobots to create a bioelectric interface capable of connecting to a smartphone or other interface.
Novel technologies that measure biological data, such as blood sugar, are based on this. Such technologies will, of course, have immediate ramifications for our privacy.
Who will collect and have access to all this data? Who will be responsible for protecting it? How will it be used?
Also, if your cellphone can receive information from your body, what information can your body receive from it, or from other sources? Could transmissions affect your mood? Your behavior? Your physical function? Your thoughts or memories?
So far, it doesnt appear as though the COVID-19 shots have these kinds of capabilities built-in, but we do know for a fact that militaries around the world are exploring and working toward such capabilities. In fact, its an arms race in its own right.
In his Sept. 14, Substack article, Human Cyborgs Are Just the Beginning, Dr. Robert Malone reviewed several of those plans.
Certain report titles alone tell the story, such as the U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) Biotechnologies for Health and Human Performance Councils report, Cyborg Soldier 2050: Human/Machine Fusion and the Implications for the Future of the DOD.
It doesnt leave a whole lot to the imagination, does it?
According to the assessment abstract:
The primary objective of this effort was to forecast and evaluate the military implications of machines that are physically integrated with the human body to augment and enhance human performance over the next 30 years.
This report summarizes this assessment and findings; identifies four potential military-use cases for new technologies in this area; and assesses their impact upon the DOD organizational structure, warfighter doctrine and tactics, and interoperability with U.S. allies and civil society.
Human augmentation technologies deemed technically feasible by 2050 at the latest include ocular enhancements to improve sight and situational awareness, optogenetic bodysuits to restore or improve muscular strength and control, auditory enhancements and neural enhancement of the brain for two-way data transfers and brain-to-brain communication.
Changing what it means to be human
In The Plan to Turn You Into a Genetically Edited Cyborg, I covered another shockingly dystopian report by the U.K. Ministry of Defense and the German Bundeswehr Office for Defense Planning, published in May 2021.
That report, Human Augmentation The Dawn of a New Paradigm, a Strategic Implications Project, reviews the scientific goals of the U.K. and German defense ministries, and they basically mirror that of the U.S. DOD.
On page 12 of the report, the concept of the human body as a platform is described, and how various parts of the human platform can be augmented.
For example:
They list several different ways to influence the physical, psychological and social performance of the human platform, including genetics (germ line and somatic modification), synthetic biology, invasive (internal) and noninvasive (external) brain interfaces, passive and powered exoskeletons, drugs and nanotechnology, neurostimulation, augmented reality technologies such as external holograms or glasses with built-in artificial intelligence and sensory augmentation technologies such as external sensors or implants.
As noted in this report, Human augmentation has the potential to change the meaning of what it means to be a human. This is precisely what Klaus Schwab, founder and executive chairman of the World Economic Forum (WEF), has stated is the goal of The Fourth Industrial Revolution.
WEF has been at the center of global affairs for more than 40 years, and if you take the time to dive into WEFs Fourth Industrial Revolution material, you realize that its all about transhumanism.
Its about the merger of man and machine.
This is a dystopian future that WEF and its global allies are actively trying to implement, whether humanity at large agrees with it or not.
Importantly, the Human Augmentation report readily admits that human augmentation can directly enhance behavior.
And, if you think these reports are just brain fodder for geeks in uniforms, think again.
The U.K. Defense and Security Accelerator is currently, right now, accepting proposals for human augmentation technologies such as those listed above.
Grants of 70,000 euros ($74,000), will be given to proposals that can provide proof of concept.
Were already being programmed to accept transhumanism
Both the DODs Cyborg Soldier report and the British/German Human Augmentation reports discuss the fact that human augmentation will inevitably widen already existing disparities, inequalities and inequities, and therefore, efforts should be undertaken to reverse negative cultural narratives of enhancement technologies.
In other words, dont let people come to the conclusion that human cyborgs are a bad idea, because at worst that might prevent their development, and at best, itll pitch regular people against the augmented elite, making their efforts to rule the plebs more difficult.
As noted by Malone, Once again, we are being played before we even know what the playing field looks like.
Disturbingly, considering how nontransparent governments have been so far, its not inconceivable that technologies capable of influencing thoughts and behaviors would be used on populations without informing anyone, which makes the list of potential risks one takes with each new mRNA injection even longer than it already is.
But we dont need to be genetically re-engineered or have nanobots introduced into our brains to be at risk of outside manipulation. Thats already happening through noninvasive means.
Control capabilities go far beyond Orwells 1984 vision
In a November 2019 interview with CNN, history professor Yuval Noah Harari, a Klaus Schwab disciple, stated that humans are already hackable, meaning the technology exists by which a company or government can know you better than you know yourself, and this knowledge can be used for both good and ill.
According to Harari, the available capabilities already go far beyond Orwells 1984 authoritarian vision, and its only going to become more powerful from here.
He predicted that algorithms will increasingly be used to make decisions that historically have been made by humans, either yourself or someone else, including whether or not youll be hired for a particular job, whether youll be granted a loan, what scholastic curriculum you will follow and even whom you will marry.

For example, there are even ongoing attempts to upload the human mind into the cloud, ultimately creating a form of digital hive mind where everyone communicates via Wi-Fi telepathy.
This, despite the fact we still do not fully understand what the mind actually is, or where its located.
Final thoughts
I dont know what it will take to prevent the dystopian post-human world envisioned by Schwab and his technocratic minions, but I suspect education would be a cornerstone of such an endeavor.
In order for there to be a resistance, enough people need to be aware of what the plan is, and where were actually being led with all these novel therapies and inventions.
In the shorter term, its crucial to realize that the fast-tracking of genetic engineering technologies and techniques to be able to write circuitry for cells and predictably program biology in the same way in which we write software and program computers means theyre going to cut corners.
Loads of them.
Testing is basically going to be done on the population at large, just as theyve done with the COVID-19 jabs.
The results of such experimentation are relatively predictable. People will be seriously injured and many will die.
So, think long and hard before you agree to take any of these forthcoming gene therapies.

DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) molecules are nucleic acids, which are the information-carrying molecules of the cell. DNA molecules are polymers and are made up of many smaller molecules, called nucleotides. Each nucleotide contains a phosphate group, a sugar molecule, and a nitrogenous base.
DNA molecules consist of two DNA strands, which are twisted around one another to form a spiral shape known as the double helix. The double helix structure of DNA was first discovered in 1953 by James Watson, Francis Crick, and Rosalind Franklin.
DNA molecules are found in the nucleus and store the genetic code; that is, all the information required for an organism to function.
DNA molecules are polymers, which means they are large molecules made up of many smaller molecules. The small molecules that make up DNA are called nucleotides.Each nucleotide contains a phosphate group, a sugar molecule (called deoxyribose), and a nitrogenous base.
There are four types of nitrogenous bases found in DNA molecules. These are:
The order of the nucleotides in a DNA molecule is known as the DNA sequence or genetic code. The genetic code determines which instructions are encoded in the DNA molecule; for example, how to make a certain type of protein. Nucleotides are strongly linked together by phosphodiester bonds, which form between the 3 carbon atom of one sugar molecule and the 5 carbon atom of another.
The nucleotides that make up DNA are joined together like a long string of beads, called a DNA strand. Each DNA molecule contains two DNA strands, which are twisted around one another to make a spiral-like shape called the double helix.
Together, the phosphate groups and sugars form the sugar-phosphate backbone, which makes up the outside of the DNA molecule. The nitrogenous bases point inwards, like the rungs of a ladder, and are joined together in base pairs.

The two strands of the double helix run in opposite directions to one another, meaning that the 5 end of one strand faces the 3 end of the other. This is called the antiparallel orientation, and it is essential for successful DNA replication.
The double helix structure of DNA was first discovered in 1953 by James Watson (an American Biologist), Francis Crick (an English Physicist), and Rosalind Franklin (an English Chemist). Though only Watson and Crick were credited with the discovery of the double helix, they are believed to have made their discovery with the help of Franklins data. Franklin was an expert in an imaging technique called X-ray crystallography, which she used to produce the first ever image of the helical shape of DNA.
Watson and Crick were awarded the Nobel Prize for their work in 1962. Despite her contribution to the discovery, Franklin was not awarded the prize, having died of cancer four years earlier.
DNA and RNA are very similar molecules. Both are types of nucleic acid, both contain genetic information, and both can be found in the nuclei of cells. The structure of RNA nucleotides are also similar to those of DNA; both contain a phosphate group, a sugar molecule, and a nitrogenous base.
However, there are some key differences between DNA and RNA molecules.
Whereas DNA contains deoxyribose, RNA contains a different type of sugar molecule, called ribose. They also contain slightly different nitrogenous bases. Though both DNA and RNA contain adenine, guanine, and cytosine, RNA contains uracil instead of thymine. And, unlike DNA, RNA molecules are usually single-stranded.
DNA and RNA molecules also have slightly different functions.
DNA molecules store the genetic information of a cell, which is used to carry out the functions of the cell. RNA is used to transfer this genetic information from the nucleus to the ribosomes (the cell organelles used to make proteins).
DNA replication is a process in which two identical DNA replicas are produced from a single DNA molecule. It is an essential part of cell division, which is necessary for the growth and repair of damaged tissues.
DNA replication ensures that each new daughter cell receives a complete copy of the organisms genetic information. This allows each new cell to function correctly, and the organism to thrive.
