Elon Musk Thinks Memes are ‘Complex’ Form of Communication. He Even Has a ‘Dealer’ for Regular Supply – News18
Posted: February 2, 2021 at 7:06 pm
Elon Musk has a meme dealer and we must find out who it is.
Musk has been in news for all the right reasons lately. Be it his comments on Bitcoin and Dogecoin, revelations about his kids' education, or his plans for colonizing Mars, the Tesla CEO's recent appearance on an audio-only chat show on the new social media app Clubhouse has led to a flurry of interest in the American millionaire and pop culture icon.
But one of the things that stood out in the now-viral QnA session was Musk's take on memes and his confession to having a "meme dealer".
"I think memes are a complex form of communication," Musk said in the interview.
"A picture says 1000 words, and maybe a meme says 10,000 words, the SpaceX CEO said, adding, "Its a complex picture with a whole bunch of meaning in it".
Elon Musk Says His Kids Were Educated by YouTube and Reddit. Now He's Ready to Send Them to Mars
Clearly a fan of the complex "artform", Musk further substantiates his love for memes by stating they have symbolic value for our times. "Memes aspire to be funny, I dont know, I love memes. I think they can be very insightful. Throughout history, I think the symbolism has positively affected people.
Musk, who is both a creator and subject of viral memes, also said that he had a "meme dealer".
"I dont really follow memes. I make some of them. Some of them are sent to me. I have some pretty kickass meme dealers...I am the lucky recipient of very interesting memes," Musk said.
He added that his friend "Mike" was a good "meme dealer".
While Musk's confession cracked the hosts of the QnA up, ardent Musk followers will note that this is not the first time Musk has used the term but often tweets the same from his official handle. Exhibit A - this tweet from 2018.
Since the Tesla chief's appearance on Clubhouse, stocks of Bitcoin have surged since he made a comment in support of the cryptocurrency. And this isn't the first time.
Elon Musk Wiring a Monkey's Brain Has Everyone is Predicting Same 'Planet of Apes' Scenario
Musk sent Bitcoin stocks flying earlier toward the end of January with an update in his Twitter bio that simply read "#bitcoin". On his Monday appearance on Clubhouse that has the internet janta across the world hooked, Musk said that he fully supported Bitcoin.
"I'm late to the party but I'm a supporter of Bitcoin," Musk said. The millionaire, however, said that he did not vouch for all cryptocurrencies. "Dogecoin was made a joke on cryptocurrency. But fate loves irony. The moth ironic outcome of this would be if Dogecoin becomes the currency of Earth in future," the Tesla CEO said.

Experts warn of brewing space mining war among US, China and Russia – MINING.COM – MINING.com
Posted: at 7:06 pm
It also proposed global legal framework for mining on the moon, called the Artemis Accords, encouraging citizens to mine the Earths natural satellite and other celestial bodies with commercial purposes.
The directive classified outer space as a legally and physically unique domain of human activity instead of a global commons, paving the way for mining the moon withoutany sort of international treaty.
Spearheaded by the US National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Artemis Accords were signed in October by Australia, Canada, England, Japan, Luxembourg, Italy and the United Emirates.
Unfortunately, the Trump Administration exacerbated a national security threat and risked the economic opportunityit hoped to secure in outer spaceby failing to engage Russia or China as potential partners, says Elya Taichman, former legislative director for then-Republican Michelle Lujan Grisham.
Instead, the Artemis Accords have driven China and Russia towardincreased cooperationin space out of fear and necessity, he writes.
Russias space agency Roscosmos was the first to speak up, likening the policy to colonialism.
There have already been examples in history when one country decided to start seizing territories in its interest everyone remembers what came of it, Roscosmos deputy general director for international cooperation, Sergey Saveliev, said at the time.
China, which made history in 2019 by becoming thefirst countryto land a probe on the far side of the Moon, chose a different approach. Since the Artemis Accords were first announced, Beijing has approached Russia to jointly build a lunar research base.
President Xi Jinping has also he made sure China planted its flag on the Moon, which happened in December 2020, more than 50 years after the US reached the lunar surface.
China has historically been excluded from the US-led international order in space. It is not a partner in the International Space Station (ISS) program, and a US legislative provision has limited NASAs ability to cooperate with it in space since 2011.
America and China should cooperate in space, say policy experts Anne-Marie Slaughter and Emily Lawrence. If the US managed to coordinate with the Soviet Union on space policy during the Cold War, it can find a way to cooperate with China now, they note.
Slaughter, a former director of policy planning in the US State Department from 2009 to 2011, believes that President Joe Bidens team should distance from Trumps accords and instead pursue a new course within the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
Biden can restore some of Americas global legitimacy by working to establish a multilateral framework, negotiated with all relevant parties that protects areas of common interest while granting internationally accepted commercial opportunities, Slaughter and Lawrence wrote.
It will not be an easy task, they say, but a necessary one. Without an international framework that includes all major spacefaring countries, the moon could become the next Wild West.
The race is on. It has been for a while. So much so that NASA has laid out a $28 billion plan to launch an unmanned mission around the moon in 2021, followed by a crewed moon flyby in 2023, then a lunar landing in 2024.
NASA plans to build a permanent moon-orbiting base called the Gateway, similar to the ISS. From there, the agency hopes to build a base on the lunar surface, where it can mine the resources required to fly the first astronauts to Mars.
Russia has been pursuing plans in recent yearsto return to the moon, potentially travelling further into outer space.
Roscosmosrevealed in 2018plans to establish a long-term base on the moon over the next two decades, while President Vladimir Putin hasvowedto launch a mission to Mars very soon.
The US, Russia and China are not the first nor the only nations to jump on board the lunar mining train.
Luxembourg, one of the first countriesto set its eyes on the possibility of mining celestial bodies, created in 2018 a Space Agency (LSA)to boost exploration and commercial utilization of resources from Near Earth Objects.
Unlike NASA, LSA does not carry out research or launches. Its purpose is to accelerate collaborations between economic project leaders of the space sector, investors and other partners.
The tiny European nation announced in November plans to create a European Space Resources Innovation Centre (ESRIC), in charge of laying the foundations for exploiting extra-terrestrial resources.
Luxembourg is also supporting a program to begin extracting resources from the Moonby 2025.
The mission, in charge of the European Space Agency in partnership with ArianeGroup, plans to extract waste-free nuclear energy thought to be worth trillions of dollars.
Both China and India have also floated ideas about extracting Helium-3 from the Earths natural satellite. Beijing has already landed on the moon twice in the 21stcentury, with more missions to follow.
In Canada, most initiatives have come from the private sector. One of the most touted was Northern Ontario-basedDeltion Innovations partnership with Moon Express, the first American private space exploration firm to have beengranted government permissionto travel beyond Earths orbit.
Space ventures in the works includeplans to mine asteroids, track space debris, build thefirst human settlement on Mars, and billionaire Elon Musks own plan for an unmanned mission to the red planet.
Geologists, as well as emerging companies, such asUS-based Planetary Resources, a firm pioneering the space mining industry, believe asteroids are packed with iron ore, nickel and precious metals at much higher concentrations than those found on Earth, making up a market valuedin the trillions.
On December 5, 2020, a metallic asteroid 140 miles wide and worth an estimated $10,000 quadrillion made its closest approach to our planet.
With NASA and other companies investing in and developing nuclear power for use in space travel and colonization, the reality of mining asteroids is closer than ever before, says Bob Goldstein, CEO of US Nuclear Corp.
With proven successful fusion energy experiments under their belt, US Nuclear and Magneto-Inertial Fusion Technologies (MIFTI) believe they are only a few years away from building the worlds first fusion power generator.
Fusion power releases up to four times as much energy as fission, and uses fuel that is lightweight, low-cost, safe, and sustainable.
A spacecraft with fusion-powered propulsion systems could reach the asteroid belt in as little as seven months. According to Goldstein, it could be powerful enough to transport the asteroid to an earth orbit where it would be much more efficient to mine and transport these valuable resources to earth.

10 Old Sci-Fi Movies That Take Place In The Present Time Period – Screen Rant
Posted: at 7:05 pm
Science fiction loves to try to predict the future, but what do old sci-fi movies set in our contemporary time get right or wrong about this era?
The second-coming of the roaring '20s has been a strange time, and surely, no one could have predicted the current state of affairs whether in terms of the pandemic, politics or technology. Or, did someone? Sci-fi films seem to be the main source for predictions about the distant future. So, were any predictions made by old sci-fi films even remotely correct?
RELATED:10 Obscure (But Awesome) 2010s Sci-Fi Movies You Can Stream On Netflix Today
Although it is unlikely that any screenwriters or other moviemakers were clairvoyant enough to predict the future, it's worth checking the many sci-fi films that take place in the 2020s for any signs of prescience. As audiences have seen in the past, sci-fi films tend to get too far ahead of themselves (possibly for entertainment's sake), but believe it or not, some films have made accurate predictionstoo.
Reign of Fireis a sci-fi action/adventure featuring a cast of megastars in Matthew McConaughey, Christian Bale and Gerard Butler. The film is set in a 2020 world where dragons have been awakened by industrial tunneling projects and have dominated humans.
The film did not exceed expectations at the box office, but still profited. Nonetheless, the film gained a cult following when released on DVD and other home-entertainment mediums. One could go out on a limb and say the film's inclusion of invasive fire-breathing dragons was a sign of the spike in wildfires in the Amazon rainforestand other parts of the world as a result of climate change, but that's sort of a weak connection to our present day.
Originally made in '27 by German director Fritz Lang and then restored and edited in '84 by Giorgio Moroder and partners, this sci-fi/drama is downright creepy. The film's premise is industrialists and their employees have (literally) risen above the rest, living in gigantic skyscrapers while the general population underneath strain and struggle to operate advanced technology that keeps their lives going.
Moroder's '84 version clearly sets the film in 2026, while the '20s version is thought to be set in 3000. The film predicted metallic humanoid robots, which currently exist. The film also demonstrates the surge of wealth inequality that would accompany technological advances in the 21st century.
The Gary Sinise-starring outer space sci-fi/adventure makes the bold prediction of 2020 being the year man steps foot on Mars. Clearly, humans aren't quite there yet, and the more recent The Martianhas delayed the possibility until 2035.
Mission to Marsdidn't do particularly well in critics' eyes, and the film has been greatly forgotten in favor of the many spectacular space-exploration flicks released since 2000. It remains unclear whether The Martianis correct in its prediction, as NASA wants to send astronauts to Mars within the next decade.
Soylent Greenis a sci-fi/horror with a very bleak outlook on humanity in the 21st century. The filmmakers predicted that world hunger would continue to be a problem the idea potentially stemming from the world food crisis '72'75. The premise consists of a civilian uproar after finding out food manufacturer Soylent Green is selling products made with human remains.
RELATED:10 Classic Sci-Fi Movies That Are A Bit Overrated
A conspiracy theory regarding cannibalism and American society's upper-tiers was posed by the infamous, discredited, and viral Plandemicdocumentary. Although, there is no feasible proof of such madness occurring, so most likely,Soylent Greendidn't get much right about the current time period suffering from behind-the-curtain cannibalism.
The sound barrier was first broken by an aircraft in '47 by Chuck Yeager, and this sci-fi/romance plays off that idea, having a pilot crash through the 'time barrier' and into 2024. The pilot finds the last remnants of society after being swept with a plague.
The argument forBeyond the Time Barrierbeing a correct prediction of COVID-19 in the current time period is not very prevalent online. However, search engines are fairly crowded with COVID-related news, so any theories related to the film are difficult to find.
The Soviet sci-fi filmVoyage To The Prehistoric Planetis amostly forgotten time-and-space-traveling fiasco that suffers from awful ratings on every site onthe internet. The "Prehistoric Planet" is Venus in the film, and astronauts encounter all sorts of extinct species.
The film is set in the year 2020 but really only gets one prediction right in NASA's future use of robots to support exploration. American director Roger Corman rereleased the film for American audiences, but it remains as one of his lesser pictures.
Alien Intruderis not part of theAlienfranchise (which includes films by directors Ridley Scott, James Cameron, and David Fincher such an unfathomable lineup for one franchise). Instead, the sci-fi/fantasy flick is a crude ripoff that makes for an unpleasant watch.
RELATED:10 Movies To Watch If You Liked Project Power
The film is set in 2022, where convicts are sent on a deadly mission into the dark, gaping depths of space. There is not much significance to draw from this film in terms of predicting our present time, but it makes for a good watch if anyone is looking for an old film that's comically bad.
Taking place in 2021, this British sci-fi/adventure opera plays with the idea of colonizing the moon. Audiences follow a freelance spaceman played by James Olson. Olson's character, Bill, is hired by a massively wealthy businessman plotting to sell land on the moon despite it being utterly valueless.
Moon Zero Twois another old sci-fi film that people weren't too high on when released, and it hasn't seemed to age well either. The film's soundtrack seems to be its best quality.
The Terminator is mainly set in the year of its release. However, Schwarzenegger's character arrives from the year 2029. One thing the classic sci-fi/action got right was the prevalence of military drones in the present, and that technology should only evolve throughout the decade.
It is yet to be seen whether time-travel will be possible in 2029. It's obviously unlikely, especially the idea of traveling to the past according to the "grandfather paradox," "causal loops"and other proven fallacies of time-travel.
Based on the book written by Stephen King under his alternate pen name Richard Bachman five years before the release of the film, both the book and film wrestle with the idea of 'entertainment-consumers' participating in the very shows they enjoy.
The film's premise is fairly applicable to the surging popularity of reality TV in the current period. The Running Mancould also be a foreshadowing social-media as well. Nevertheless, the book and film seem to question a human's aptness towards entertainment that comes at the expense of others. Although, modern humans are far from the point where the most popular reality show in the country becomes a battle royale.

InvestorPlace
A few months ago, I began prodding around the idea of, What are the future FAANG stocks? Weve seen Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) and other tech stocks swell from modest winners to worldwide behemoths. These stocks went from $100 billion to $1 trillion in market capitalization. So many people talk about what it would be like if we had bought Apple in the 1980s or Amazon in 1999. While anyone who did and was able to hold on until now is ridiculously rich, they also sat through a ton of volatility. InvestorPlace - Stock Market News, Stock Advice & Trading Tips Further, investors could have waited until after Apples iPhone moment or Amazons clear dominance of e-commerce and still made a 10x or more return on their investment. Dont believe me? Apple is up over 1,000% over the past decade, while Amazon is up 1,760%. Over just the last five years when it was absurdly clear these two were established leaders Apple and Amazon are up 463% and 442%, respectively. That led me to ponder, what are the next tech stocks that could become new FAANG leaders? Specifically, I am looking for companies in the $50 billion to $300 billion market cap range that can go to $400 billion to $1 trillion or more. Its an admittedly wide range, but who cares these winners are right under our noses. Lets look at seven tech stocks: 7 Safe Stocks to Buy for Solid Returns in Tumultuous Times PayPal (NASDAQ:PYPL) Salesforce (NYSE:CRM) Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) Roku (NASDAQ:ROKU) Shopify (NYSE:SHOP) Adobe Systems (NASDAQ:ADBE) Tech Stocks to Buy for Future Gains: PayPal (PYPL) Source: JHVEPhoto / Shutterstock.com Current Market Cap: $295 billion Many investors have continued to underestimate PayPal. When it comes to FAANG tech stocks in their younger years, that seems to be a staple observation of them as well. However, PayPal has found a way to become a payment juggernaut. While sending money to friends and family is free and convenient, thats simply one part of the ecosystem. The company also makes a sliver of sales when involving another business or merchant. Its become a safe, trusted and convenient way for businesses to sell online or to make subscriptions a piece of cake. PayPals acquisition of Venmo and Honey have only added to those layers of engagement, while e-commerce will continue to be the main catalyst behind its growth. For those looking at tech stocks, the power and trend of e-commerce doesnt need to be explained. Lastly, PayPals now in the cryptocurrency game, allowing customers to buy and sell Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Etherium and Litecoin. Maybe PayPal wont be able to collect its current fee read: commission on these transactions forever, based on how stock commissions vanished almost overnight in the brokerage industry. However, for now it should act as an additional growth catalyst. Bonus: At a $100 billion market cap, Square (NYSE:SQ) could also be a consideration as a member of new FAANG tech stocks in this respect. Salesforce (CRM) Source: Bjorn Bakstad / Shutterstock.com Current Market Cap: $206 billion. It should go without saying that given the massive gains the stock market has registered over the past nine months, the ideal scenario would be a sizable correction for several of the stocks on this list. However, that doesnt apply to all of them. Take Salesforce for example. This company keeps on printing money as revenue continues to chug higher. For all the doubt that Salesforce has endured over the years, it has done quite well. It doesnt seem like management plans on stopping, either. For instance, management is looking to generate $60 billion in revenue by 2034. Most recently, it aims to scoop up Slack (NYSE:WORK), growing its workstation presence and scaling up its fight against Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT). 8 Cheap Stocks to Buy With Your Next Stimulus Check As we are talking about pullbacks, Salesforce is a great example. At the recent low, shares were 25% off the highs. That seems like a great opportunity for a company that continually sports 20%-plus revenue growth. Nvidia (NVDA) Source: Sundry Photography / Shutterstock.com Current Market Cap: $335 billion Admittedly a bit larger than what we were looking for, Nvidia needs to be included on this list. Almost every major technological trend is growing in demand. More internet traffic is creating strain in the cloud, increasing demand for edge-cloud computing. More data is creating more need for datacenters. Increasing self-driving vehicle capabilities demand more computing power. Better computers demand better graphics. The list goes on and on and Nvidia is there at every turn. The companys products cater to multiple end markets with impressive secular growth. Thats why, despite the pandemic, Nvidia saw such an extreme acceleration in both earnings and revenue. Its savvy M&A strategy has allowed it to add high-quality names like Mellanox at reasonable valuations. Now Nvidia is going after Arm, a massive $40 billion deal. Nvidia is already nearing an unstoppable state, but with Arm it would be a juggernaut. From a pure antitrust perspective, Nvidia should be fine. However, this juggernaut position might cause some hiccups. Either way, this is a high-quality name that will only grow in size over time. Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) Source: Sundry Photography / Shutterstock.com Current Market Cap: $111.5 billion For Nvidias smaller sibling, we have Advanced Micro Devices. At about one-third the size, AMD has quickly climbed the ladder while drastically improving its financials. CEO Lisa Su has orchestrated one of the most impressive comeback stories in the stock market. Once left for dead, AMD was trading firmly below the $2 mark in 2016. Now sporting a 52-week high of $99-and-change, the leadership has been stellar. Like Nvidia, AMD is situated in multiple secular growth themes as rising demand in technology results in rising demand for AMD. Also like Nvidia, AMD saw a massive rise in revenue and profit during the pandemic. In one last final comparison to Nvidia, AMD is also working to close a large acquisition. In October, the company agreed to acquire Xilinx for $35 billion. 9 Stocks Selling at a Discount Right Now While it would require years worth of more growth, its not hard to imagine AMD growing to the size of Nvidia ($300 billion). Eventually clearing this level could put it on the lower end of the FAANG status in terms of its size. Roku (ROKU) Source: jejim / Shutterstock.com Current Market Cap: $53 billion Roku is a tough one, because its certainly the smallest name on this list (by a lot) and it just went on a massive rally. Shares are up 90% over the past three months, as Roku has climbed from a market cap of just $28 billion to where it is today. Additionally, investors just dont understand this company. They still think its going head-to-head with Amazon with its stick players. While thats kind of true, the story behind Roku isnt the hardware its the platform. Roku doesnt care if its making money on the hardware. Instead, its focus is on the platform, where it collects fees from content providers and on ad revenue from its free Roku channel. In that respect, growth continues to explode. Analysts expect roughly 50% revenue growth this year, followed by 40% growth in 2021 and 36% growth in 2022. Respectfully, I believe that may be conservative. Bulls will acknowledge that a pullback may be in order (and a potentially large one at that). However, I dont think the top is in for Roku. For AMD I mentioned the lower end of the FAANG status, which would be Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX). Currently, thats a $250 billion market cap and remember, NFLX is at a new high. I could see a scenario where Roku pulls back 20% to 25% giving it a roughly $40 billion market cap and ultimately roaring on to a $200-plus billion entity. Shopify (SHOP) Source: justplay1412 / Shutterstock.com Current Market Cap: $145 billion There is one problem with Shopify and several other names on this list: The rallies. While the massive rallies great for long-term investors, it makes the stocks susceptible to large pullbacks as well. If and when we get those declines, thats investors opportunity to pounce. For Shopify, the bullish reasoning is multifold. First, Shopify is riding a much large trend e-commerce and therefore will continue to benefit from robust growth. When the coronavirus hit, sales were not negatively impacted. Instead, merchants flocked to its platform, driving Shopifys revenue higher. Second, its building out the anti-Amazon business platform giving merchants big and small power and control of the customer experience. Now the reward here is massive, as Shopify builds out multiple business segments likes shipping, credit, Shopify Pay and others. However, the risk is present as well. That is, can these companies that crave independence from Amazon delivery quality experiences for the customer? In the end, businesses and merchants are at least willing to try. In December 2019 I said investors could buy Shopify despite its lofty valuation. My argument centered on its valuation, saying this name could go from a $40 billion market cap to a $100 to $120 billion market cap in a decade. 7 Safe Stocks to Buy for Solid Returns in Tumultuous Times It was not obvious that the more than tripling in its value would take place in just a few months. In the long, long run, its not hard to imagine this name being significantly higher. Adobe Systems (ADBE) Source: r.classen / Shutterstock.com Current market cap: $228 billion Last but not certainly not least is Adobe. This company does a lot more than just Flash or Photoshop. Its become a mainstay in e-commerce while also becoming a beacon in the graphics, digital and creative landscape. Find me a freelance graphic designer whos not using Adobe. The stock has quietly racked up enormous gains as well. Adobe is up 140% over the past three years and 430% over the past five years. Over the last decade, the stock has rallied more than 1,300%, as its market cap was around $16 billion just 10 years ago. Thats some impressive action and Adobe doesnt show many signs of letting up. Analysts expect double-digit earnings and revenue growth this year and next year, while the company gross margins remain solidly above 85%. While its top-line margins have been steady, its bottom-line profit margins have been soaring. Adobe is quickly yet quietly becoming a technology juggernaut right in front of us. Like some others on this list, the stock has been consolidating nicely over the past six months or so. Lets see if this name can resolve to the upside. On the date of publication, Bret Kenwell held a long position in AAPL, ROKU, CRM and NVDA. Bret Kenwell is the manager and author of Future Blue Chips and is on Twitter @BretKenwell. A University Is Using a Dead Professor to Teach an Online Class – Futurism
Posted: at 7:17 am
Beyond the Grave
Aaron Ansuini, a student at Concordia University in Montreal, Canada made a shocking discovery: He found that his art history professor wasnt alive anymore.
HI EXCUSE ME, Ansuini wrote in a tweet, I just found out the the prof for this online course Im taking *died in 2019* and hes technically still giving classes since hes *literally my prof for this course* and Im learning from lectures recorded before his passing.
I mean, I guess I technically read texts written by people whove passed all the time, he continued, but its the fact that I looked up his email to send him a question and PULLED UP HIS MEMORIAM INSTEAD that just THREW ME OFF A LITTLE.
Concordia University confirmed to Slate that professor Franois-Marc Gagnon, a lecturer in the universitys art history department, did indeed pass in 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic.
His lectures, however, live on in Concordias online course catalog and are used for a dedicated online course. The class is technically being led by a different professor and two teaching assistants, with Gagnons recordings being used as a teaching tool, according to Slate.
Musicians recordings are frequently released after they die. Social media data often outlives its account holders as well. But the phenomenon is less common in higher education.
The incident also sheds light on the difficulties of learning online during COVID a phenomenon thats upending all sorts of social norms.

BADG’s Obsidian is a futuristic concept house powered by Black creativity – Business of Home
Posted: at 7:17 am
A little over two years ago, artist Malene Barnett started the Black Artists + Designers Guild with the goal of combating the lack of representation of Black creatives in design. Since an early meeting of 12 at the Fabricut showroom in New York, the group has grown to more than 200 from all across the world; its work has been celebrated at industry events ranging from High Point to NY Now; and its members have graced magazine covers and earned spots on the AD100. Now, BADG has its first house projectbut its not the typical 15 rooms in an unoccupied townhouse experience.
I realized early on that we needed to have our own projecta space where we get to explore not only our creativity but thinking about What does space look like and what could it feel like knowing that Black bodies will occupy it? Barnett tells host Dennis Scully on the latest episode of the Business of Home podcast. We took a different approach, not necessarily starting with, Lets find a pretty fabric and a couch and all the accessories and items. It was more about, How do we connect to the community so we can build a space that supports our well-being and health and also think about our lifestyle and culture?

The resulting project, a virtual concept home called Obsidian, debuts online next week. The home, set in a hypothetical future of 2025 and rendered digitally on an imagined site in Oakland, California, showcases the work of 22 BADG members, ranging from interior designers to architects to artists. Beyond presenting beautiful rooms, the goal, say Barnett and designer Leyden Lewis, was to use the project as a testing ground for technology and design concepts crafted with the Black family in mind.
[Architect] Nina Cooke John puts it really well: Its more along the lines of a car show. Mercedes-Benz shows you what theyre envisioning 10 years from now, says Lewis, who, along with Cooke John, designed the architecture of the Obsidian Virtual Concept House. We wanted to say, Lets use that model to put together ideas that not only grab our story now but project that story into whats being referred to as our ancestral future.
The homes digital setting allowed its creators to explore concepts that would either be cost-prohibitive or technologically challenging in a real-life setting. Theres Barnetts Sankofa: Legacy Wall installation, which combines terracotta tiles with an enormous digital screen, all backed by a computer that collects and displays the inhabitants family and medical history on voice command. Then theres Lewiss Room of Requirement, a multipurpose space that acts as both a virtual doctors office and a venue for sexual exploration.
These high-concept explorations sit alongside more day-to-day investigations of Black domesticity. The home, says Barnett, is designed to be an anchor house, a place where extended family can come and staya necessity that the artist says she and her BADG co-creators identified both from their own experience and through interviews with Black families at the outset of the project. A more disturbing practicality? Safety measures that the designers added as a response to the police killings of Black men and women that gripped the nation last springnotably that of Breonna Taylor, who was shot in her own home.
Safety is luxury, says Lewis. Can you imagine that wed actually be thinking about an individual demographic group in America thinking about security as luxury? Its pretty astounding.

Something NewObsidian is not a typical showhouse, by design. Its an idea that opened up a lot of new possibilities, says Barnett, but it presented a challenge to sponsors who are used to the typical we loan you product, we get exposure arrangement. For some sponsors or corporations, they couldnt understand. Because this is all brand-new. Its brand-new for us, its brand-new for them, she says. We got a lot of opportunity for vendors to give us product, but we turned that down. We had to teach the vendors: No, this is how were doing it. We want you to be a part of it, but you have to understand this is our house, we have our own set of standards and rules. Its not about giving us product, because that doesnt position us as creative thinkers if we just keep taking [and placing] product.
Diversity vs. EquityWhen we talk about racial injustice in the design industry, the words we use matter. A focus on diversity, says Barnett, leads to initiatives that showcase Black creatives without backing up that attention with economic investment in their businesses. Real change? It comes from equity. There has been a confusion between what diversity is and equity is. Equity comes with a compensation that our members, our creators, have been lacking in this industry, she says. The companies who want to partner with us have to understand that yes, the exposure is great, but we want to grow our businesses.
Open your rolodexIt can be daunting for even the most well-intentioned peopleand companiesto commit to a more equitable industry. Theres no one way to make progress, say Barnett and Lewis. The first step is generally a personal engagement with the reality of injustice. From there, sustained financial contributions to organizations like BADG dont hurt. Another way to spread equity, they say, is to widen your own circle and spread opportunity. The money is one part, but opening up that Rolodex and making connections is another part, and I think they go hand in hand, says Barnett. When those opportunities do come in, why not think of somebody else thats outside of your circle? Why not start to build a new circle of people that you can connect with and help grow their businesses, as well? If you keep going to lunch with the same people, theyre going to get all the opportunities.

Crew of private astronauts pay $55 million each to visit Space Station – Chron
Posted: at 7:01 am
A private crew of three men is scheduled to spend eight days at the International Space Station (ISS) after they each paid $55 million to join the new Ax-1 mission from Houston-based company Axiom Space.
Three men from three different countries will make the historic trip led by former NASA astronaut and Axiom vice-president Michael Lpez-Alegra, in what is "The first private ISS crew in the history of humankind," Axiom said in a tweet.
SPACEX SETS RECORD: SpaceX sets new record with controversial satellite launch
According to an Axiom press release, the trip is scheduled for January 2022 and includes a multi-national crew made up of American Larry Connor, an entrepreneur, and non-profit activist investor, Canadian investor and philanthropist, Mark Pathy, and Israeli businessman Eytan Stibbe.
The first launch of the Ax-1 mission will fly on a SpaceX Crew Dragon led by mission commander Lpez-Alegra who called the group a "collection of pioneers," according to the press release.
"We sought to put together a crew for this historic mission that had demonstrated a lifelong commitment to improving the lives of the people on Earth, and I'm glad to say we've done that with this group," Axiom Space President and CEO Michael Suffredini said in the press release.
"The humanitarian leaders will lay the groundwork for a full realization of low Earth Orbit's possibilities," Axiom said
Axiom Space refers to the men as "Axionauts" and has plans to work with each of them to perform on-orbit research according to their mission goals.
Some of the research includes Connor collaborating with the Mayo Clinic; Pathy will be working with the Montreal Childrens Hospital on health-related research; while Stibbe plans to conduct research for Israeli researchers and do educational activities from orbit, according to the media release.
Each of the men will have to undergo 15 weeks of Axiom training and they will also have to pass medical tests, according to Suffredini.
"70-year-old Connor will become the second-oldest person to fly in space, after John Glenn's shuttle flight in 1998 at age 77," Marcia Dunn with the Associated Press said.
Axiom intends to offer two private missions per year to the ISS and plans to construct its own privately-funded space station.

ARISS and Partners Are Investigating Space Station Ham Radio Failure – ARRL
Posted: at 7:01 am
01/29/2021
Amateur Radio on the International Space Station (ARISS) and its partners are troubleshooting a failure within the on-board NA1SS amateur station in the ISS Columbus module. The problem does not appear to be with the radio equipment in Columbus, however. ARISS realized the problem when a contact with a school in Wyoming, between ON4ISS on Earth and astronaut Mike Hopkins, KF5LJG, at NA1SS, had to abort when no downlink signal was heard.
Today was a tough one for ARISS, ARISS-International Chair Frank Bauer, KA3HDO, began in a message on January 28 to the ARISS team. Bauer explained that during a January 27 spacewalk to install exterior cabling on the ISS Columbus module, the current coax feed line installed 11 years ago was replaced with another built by the European Space Agency (ESA) and Airbus. It included two additional RF connectors to support the commissioning of the Bartolomeo payload-hosting platform installed last spring on Columbus.
On January 26, prior to the EVA [extravehicular activity], our Columbus next-generation radio system was shut off and the ISS-internal coaxial cable to the antenna was disconnected from the ARISS radio as a safety precaution for the EVA, Bauer said. During the spacewalk, an external four-connector coax feed line replaced one with two RF connections.
This change was made to allow ESA to connect ARISS and three additional customers to Bartolomeo, as compared to ARISS and one additional RF customer, Bauer explained.
With the spacewalk completed, the ISS crew restarted the ISS ham radio station on January 28, but no voice repeater or automatic packet repeater system (APRS) downlink reports were heard. During a scheduled school contact at 1746 UTC, no downlink signal was heard either, and the attempted contact had to be terminated.
Clearly, there is an issue, Bauer continued. More troubleshooting will be required. It may be the new external RF cable that was installed during yesterdays EVA. It might also [have been caused by] the connect and disconnect of the interior coaxial (RF) cable. So, the interior cable cannot be totally discounted yet.
Bauer said the crew photographed the coaxial cable and connector attached to the ARISS radio inside the ISS. Because the exterior cable is a Bartolomeo cable and not an ARISS cable, we are working with ESA and NASA on a way forward, he said. NASA has opened a Payload Anomaly Report on this issue. We have talked to both the NASA and ESA representatives.
Bauer said ARISS has asked its Russian team lead Sergey Samburov, RV3DR, if ARISS could temporarily use the RS0ISS radio in the ISS Service Module for school contacts that are already scheduled until ARISS can resolve the issue.
On behalf of the ARISS International Board, the ARISS Delegates, and the entire team, I want to thank all of you for your tremendous volunteer support to ARISS, Bauer said. We will get through this and be more resilient as a result.

PHOTOS: See the auroras light show from the International Space Station – FOX40
Posted: at 7:01 am
(NEXSTAR) The International Space Station experienced a recent celestial show, capturing the earths auroras from high above the planets atmosphere.
The newly released photos show streaks of green and blue and even red dancing across the darkened night sky.
The stations orbit takes it as high 51.6 above the equator offering awe-inspiring views of the Earths aurora in between the city lights and the twinkling stars, the ISP said on Twitter.
Auroras, also known as polar lights, are visible from land, as well as space. They are caused by collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun and gaseous particles in the earths atmosphere.
They can extend as high as 400 miles above the surface of the earth.
According to the Northern Lights Centre, the best places to watch the lights in North America are in the northwestern regions of Canada, including the Yukon and Northwest Territories.
The auroras can also be seen over the south of Greenland and Iceland, off the northern coast of Norway and over the waters of northern Siberia. Southern auroras, called aurora australis, are concentrated in a ring around Antarctica and the southern Indian Ocean.
Auroral activity is cyclic, and the lights tend to peak in intensity every 11 years.
