NASA Scientists Need to Live and Work on "Mars Time" – Futurism

The Perseverance rover doesn't care about your nine-to-five.Mars Time
NASAs Perseverance Mars rover is currently approaching the surface of Mars, where its expected to touch down in the next few hours.
Assuming it lands successfully, the Perseverance mission team at NASA is going to need to make some major lifestyle changes, Space.com reports. Most notably? Theyre going to have to start living and working on whats called Mars time, meaning theyll shift their schedule to match whats happening on the Red Planet instead of back home on Earth.
A day on Mars lasts about 24 hours and 37 minutes, meaning that the NASA teams shifts will actually start and end at different Earth times each day, since the two planets arent in perfect sync with one another.
2PM will be our start time and then that will adjust by 40 minutes every day, deputy project manager Jennifer Trosper said during a Tuesday news conference. While it works, we only ask people to do this for three months.
During past rover landings, NASA engineers would often set up cots and sleep at work as they adjusted to their constantly-shifting schedules, Space.com reports. But because of the pandemic, many of the team members will be working from home and have to sort out their calendars on their own.
But thankfully, the engineers will only go through three cycles of Mars time each just over a month on Earth before they can return to a normal working schedule, Space.com reports. Then, theyll finally be able to live on their own planets local time and recover from what Trosper said will feel a whole lot like constant jet-lag.

Jaguar Says All Its Cars Will Be Electric in Just Four Years – Futurism
Posted: at 2:30 pm
Electric Jaguars and potentially even hydrogen-powered ones are coming very soon.Big Shift
British Automaker Jaguar Land Rover Limited announced on Monday that its making an ambitious and speedy transition away from gas-burning cars to go almost entirely electric in the future.
Most prominently, the entire Jaguar brand will go entirely electric within the next four years, according to a company press release about the pivot. In addition, the company will start to launch all-electric Land Rover SUV models in 2024. Both are ambitious timelines, but symbolically important if the iconic automaker can show the switch is possible, it could push the entire industry away from gas-burning cars and toward greener technologies.
Jaguar Land Rover is far from the only company pivoting or at least heavily investing in electric vehicles. President Biden said he wanted to electrify the entire federal fleet of vehicles, and General Motors plans to sell only electric cars, trucks, and SUVs by 2035.
But if all goes according to plan, Jaguar will already be long-done with its electrification by then. The company giving itself just four years to pivot is an ambitious and perhaps lofty goal, so it will be interesting to see how it shakes out.
The cleaner Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles of the future may not be powered by electricity alone, according to the press release. The company is also looking into hydrogen fuel technology as a possible means to power its cars, providing multiple avenues to pursue clean energy.
Of course, these are luxury vehicles that were talking about, so a fleet of electric Jaguars wont do much to make electric car technology more accessible for the average person. That said, progress is progress.

Elon Musk Collaborated With MIT to Track COVID Infections at SpaceX – Futurism
Posted: at 2:30 pm
More than 4,000 SpaceX employees took part in a study, helmed by Elon Musk, to track the spread of COVID-19 throughout the company.
Musk partnered with researchers from Harvard and MIT to develop the antibody testing program, which required volunteer SpaceX employees to submit to monthly blood tests.
This week, the group published a peer-reviewed study Musk, known as an unusually hands-on executive, carries a byline on it in the journal Nature Communications.
The findings shed new light on how the severity of COVID symptoms impact the amount of antibodies each person has,and suggests those who experienced mild symptoms from the virus are less likely to have long-term immunity.
People can have antibodies, but it doesnt mean they are going to be immune, Dr. Galit Alter, co-author of the study and member of the Ragon Institute of MGH, MIT, and Harvard, told The Wall Street Journal.
The findings have the potential to help public health officials identify who is most vulnerable to the coronavirus and then prioritize them for vaccinations. Of course, more research is needed before it can be more widely applied.
To really nail this down at a public-health level would require doing reinfection studies and following people for reinfection, Joshua T. Schiffer, associate professor at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Centers vaccine and infectious-disease division, told the WSJ.
SpaceX is continuing to research, test, and monitor its employees for infection and reinfection each month. As the vaccine is distributed throughout the country, itll also examine the impact the vaccine on antibody production.
Hopefully, their boss has changed his own mind on getting the vaccine.

Could I Defeat NASAs New Mars Rover in Hand-to-Hand Combat? – Futurism
Posted: at 2:30 pm
Watching NASAs Perseverance rover touch down on the Red Planet this week, it was impossible not to be struck by a sense of awe at humanitys scientific achievements in our race to the stars. The spectacle invited us to dwell on our place in the universe and the countless ways in which we reach toward even the most distant frontiers.
It also brought to mind a pressing question. If I were dropped in Jezero crater with a pressurized spacesuit, could I defeat NASAs mighty rover in hand-to-hand or at least hand-to-robot-arm combat?
In the red corner we have the most technologically advanced robot ever to explore beyond Earth. Its bristling with sensors, armed with a fearsome drill and a laser, fueled by a plutonium power system, and ruggedly constructed to withstand the harsh Martian environment.
And in the blue corner we have me, a physically unremarkable representative of a species which likes to think of itself as the apex predator of the nearby planet of Earth.
In reality, I like to think that Perseverance and I would be the best of friends. The rover is a peaceful scientific investigator, searching Mars for signs of ancient life. And its controlled by humans on Earth, which means its subject to a communications delay of up to 20 minutes. But to make things interesting, lets assume that its been reprogrammed to use every tool in its arsenal for maximum autonomous lethality.
I wanted to know if I stood a chance in such a scenario, so I called up Roger Wiens of the Los Alamos National Laboratory, who led the development of Perseverances SuperCam instrument and is broadly familiar with the rovers capabilities.
Wiens suggested that my best bet might be to flip it over like a beetle on its back. But given that Perseverance is approximately the size and weight of my first car in a recent interview with Futurism, NASA head Steve Jurczyk characterized it as a robot the size of a Mini Cooper Id probably struggle, even with the planets weak gravity.
One advantage I would have is speed. My fitness levels are deeply unimpressive, exacerbated by a year spent alternately sitting at my desk and rewatching old episodes of Star Trek from my couch. But even my dumpy, unathletic body could maintain a leisurely pace of 3 mph enough to easily overtake the rovers glacial top speed of just 0.1 mph.
Even if the rover could crush my squishy organic frame beneath its formidable wheels, it would have to catch me first. And as a lifelong specialist in avoiding confrontation, I can run away like a champ.
One strategy would be to use my cunning and construct a trap. I could build a ramp from Martian rocks and sand and lie in wait for the Mars rover to investigate, hoping the steep terrain would tip it over. But Wiens isnt sure about my chances.
That might be a little difficult, he said. Ive seen a model drive right up over a rock that was nearly one meter tall.
Indeed, the rover can make amazing maneuvers over tricky terrain thanks to its suspension system called, and I swear I am not making this up, a rocker-bogie mechanism which keeps its weight evenly distributed over all six sturdy wheels. It can climb over rocks and through depressions, and the chunky tread of its wheels can handle both soft sand and hard rocks.
Another possibility would be to use my highly evolved monkey brain to perform a sneak attack. In the great tradition of early man, I could locate a hefty Mars rock and try to bludgeon the rover into submission.
Wiens thinks that might work, at least to some extent. Most of the hardware which makes up instruments like SuperCam is custom-built to withstand the extreme forces of launch and landing, not to mention the planets frigid temperatures. But certain components, such as the infrared detectors, are commercially built devices and can contain fragile parts.
We dont really expect any Martians to be attacking the rover, Wiens admitted.
So I might have a chance at harming it, because some parts are a bit sensitive if someone is throwing rocks or small pebbles at it, in Wiens analysis. Theres a glass window in front of the SuperCam instrument, for instance, which he thinks I could smash to disorient the rover.
To do that, though, Id need to get close, and that would be hard due to its keen-eyed sensors. The SuperCam instrument alone includes a camera with a zoom powerful enough to spot a human hair from two meters away, and infrared sensors for studying mineralogy via reflected sunlight, which means it could spot me in the dark. It also has a microphone, which will be the first instrument to record the sounds of Mars, so even my footfalls could betray me.
The rover might defend itself by attacking me with its Ingenuity marscopter, with its whirling rotors, which NASA intends to be the first aircraft to fly on a world other than Earth. And what really scares me about melee combat is Perseverances laser, also part of SuperCam, which is designed to fire in brief pulses of five billionths of a second, focused on an area of just a fraction of a millimeter. The laser can fire at targets more than 20 feet away with great accuracy.
It packs a lot of energy into a really small spot, Wiens explained, to turn little pieces of rock into a high-energy plasma so that the camera can detect the color spectrum they give off, revealing their elemental composition.
Thats awesome for analyzing Martian rocks. But its unclear what it would mean for me as the target of the rovers ire. What would happen, I asked, if I put my hand in front of the laser?
It would make a little burn mark, Wiens said. Dont do that.
I might get some protection from the laser with my spacesuit. But the rover would have yet another weapon in the form of its drill, which is designed to bore into rocks in order to collect samples. The Sample Caching System includes a carousel of no less than nine drill bits for different types of sample, which are attached to a seven-foot arm that reaches out to drill into rock or, terrifyingly, into me.
All told, when even one of the scientists who was intimately involved in the design of the rover is skeptical about my chances, Im not feeling confident. Thats a chilling thought, especially when I imagine Im on Mars and its growing dark, and through the thin atmosphere an ominous whisper carries a distant whirring of gears which tells me my ruthless robotic adversary is out there, just waiting for its chance to attack.
Dan Robitzski contributed reporting.

It validates the experience of survivors: Marking the 1st National Human Trafficking Awareness Day – Global News
Posted: at 2:27 pm
As both an advocate and a survivor, Kelly Franklin says seeing Canadian politicians declare a national day for human trafficking awareness is a big step to validating the experiences of victims.
I actually cried because of what this means to validate a victim-survivor experience, what families have gone through, to say Canada cares was the most important message I took away.
Franklin is the chief executive director and founder of Courage for Freedom, a registered charity focused on delivering front-line support for sexually assaulted minors and raising awareness about sex trafficking.
Monday, Feb. 22 marks the first National Human Trafficking Awareness Day in Canada. On Feb. 15, federal members of Parliament (MP) unanimously agreed on the motion to adopt the day, coinciding with the 2007 declaration to condemn all forms of human trafficking and slavery.
Story continues below advertisement
Canada is saying, hey, this is happening here, and Parliament is acknowledging it, we are standing with victims and survivors, and thats a big win because when we listen to survivors, the work starts to happen, said Franklin.
For Franklin, the day will go a long way to helping them raises awareness about the issue and is a way to help hold the government accountable every year for what they are doing to combat the issue.
According to a 2018 Statistics Canada report on trafficking in Canada, 28 per cent of all trafficking victims in the country are under 18, with 75 per cent of all victims under 25.
Trending Stories
At least 60 per cent of all trafficking victims in the country come from Ontario and over 97 per cent of all victims are female.
The government of Ontario reported that the average age for victims targeted is just 13 years old.
For Elgin-Middlesex-London Conservative MP Karen Vecchio, having Feb. 22 declared a national day of awareness was a non-partisan issue.
Story continues below advertisement
I think with one of these topics its not party-related, this is something all parliamentarians agree on, and thats because we see it happening in our own community, Vecchio said.
This is an incredible thing where you see everyone has one goal and you dont see that a lot.
Vecchio was one of several politicians who helped advocate for the day before formally adopting it. Politicians made a point to take it to debate and talk about the impacts of the day before adopting it.
Feb. 22 is already a day recognized in both Ontario and Alberta and Vecchio said bringing it across Canada is a great way to build on the work the two provinces have already been doing.
For those trying to figure out how to mark the day, Courage for Freedom has a social media campaign to acknowledge it.
Story continues below advertisement
Two years ago, Courage for Freedom, along with several victims, launched Project ONroute, a provincial human trafficking awareness campaign in Ontario.
The campaign took over the screens at 20 ONroutes in Ontario for 30 days to spread awareness about human trafficking.
This year, because of the pandemic, the campaign has developed as a virtual social media campaign called the Eradicate Challenge, asking everyone to print off the #Eradicate Challenge signs and share a video or photo holding the sign to spread awareness about the buying and selling of children in Canada.
Full details on the campaign and how to participate are available on the Courage for Freedom website.

Kids represent a small fraction of overall COVID-19 deaths in the US but 75% of them are children of color – Business Insider
Posted: at 2:27 pm
Children make up a small percentage of the overall COVID-19 death toll in the US, but the majority of the adolescents who have died from the virus so far were children of color.
As of February 11, 241 kids died from COVID-19, according to data from the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Children's Hospital Association.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that 75% of COVID-19 deaths among children were kids of color.
The CDC study looked at 121 deaths among children between February and July 2020 and found that 45% were Hispanic, 29% were Black, and 4% were non-Hispanic American Indian or Alaska Native.
The death rate among children of color is higher than the death rate of adults of color compared to their white counterparts. Adults of color are more than twice as likely to die from the coronavirus.
NPR reported that similar to adults, underlying conditions like asthma, obesity, and cardiac issues are a risk factor for children to develop severe illness.
Altogether, there have been more than 3 million coronavirus cases among kids, about 13% of the overall number of cases in the US.
However, while many kids who died from coronavirus complications end up in the hospital, many have died at home or in the emergency room, NPR reported.
Tagan, 5, fell sick in October and her mother Lastassija White took her to the hospital after she woke up vomiting in the middle of the night, The Washington Post reported.Doctors at Northwest Texas Healthcare System hospital sent her home and told her to isolate after she tested positive for coronavirus. That night, White found her unresponsive.
Kimora "Kimmie" Lynum was 9 when she died from COVID-19 and no one knew she had the virus until after she died, the Post reported.
Lynum told her mother that she had a stomachache one day in July and after her temperature shot up to 103, she was rushed to the hospital where doctors did not test her for the coronavirus and sent her home. She seemed to be doing better and playing but six days later she took a nap and was later found unresponsive.
Several factors, including underlying conditions and multisystem inflammatory syndrome a very rare post-inflammatory condition that impacts kids weeks after a coronavirus infection could lead to death, the Post reported.
Another factor was simply a lack of awareness at the start of the pandemic that kids could be severely impacted by the virus.Dr. Preeti Malani, an infectious disease specialist at the University of Michigan told NPR: "for a long time, it was believed that children didn't die from this."

Lost treasures of Liverpool now confined to history – Liverpool Echo
Posted: at 2:22 pm
In a city as steeped in history as Liverpool, it's easy to find fascinating reminders of the past on nearly every street.
But there are some iconic landmarks that we've loved and lost along the way, as the city evolves and changes.
From The Futurist Cinema in Lime Street to the hustle and bustle of Stanley Dock Market, these lost treasures were loved by locals but have now sadly been confined to history.
We decided to reminisce about this by taking a look back in our archives at some of the places we wish we could bring back.
This list includes facilities that have either gone completely, or which people would struggle to recognise today.
If there is anything you think should have been included in this list or you would like to share your memories then please let us know in the comments below.
The Futurist Cinema
The cinema first opened under the name of the Lime Street Picture House in 1912 and was the city centre's first purpose-built cinema.
It boasted a full orchestra for silent films as well as seats for 1029 customers
When another cinema opened in Clayton Square named 'Liverpool Picture House,' the Lime Street Picture House changed its name to City Picture House.
But this name didn't last long either and in October 1920 the cinema was renamed The Futurist by its new owners.
The building suffered bomb damage during the Second World War but it was quickly rebuilt and the cinema began showing films again that year.
The Futurist closed on July 17, 1982, and stood derelict for decades.
It was demolished in 2016 to make way for a 39m redevelopment including a hotel, student accommodation and a Lidl store.
Designed by artist Anthony Brown, the facade of the building tells the story of the history of the street, from the Futurist to the Yankee Bar, the National Milk Bar and even Marks & Spencer.
Liverpool Castle
Liverpool once had a medieval castle that stood on the site now occupied by Derby Square and Liverpool Crown Court.
The Castle of Liverpool was built as a result of King John issuing a Letters Patents, popularly known as the Royal Charter, to Liverpool on August 28, 1207.
It is believed to have been constructed around 1235, although some records suggest it could have been as early as 1208.
The castle was located at the top of what is now Lord Street, offering the highest point in the city overlooking "the Pool".
We have launched a Facebook group to bring you more photos, nostalgia and memories in one place.
It will feature pictures, stories and fond memories connected to Merseyside.
To join and get updates, click here.
It had a hall, chapel, brewhouse and bakehouse, as well as a moat running around the outside.
An act was passed to demolish the castle in 1715 and build a church in its place, with St George's church built on the old site. Another church was later built in its place but this was demolished in 1899.
A plaque dedicated to the castle can be found today on the Victoria Monument in Derby Square.
Liverpool Fruit Exchange
Often passed by without a second glance on Victoria Street, the old Fruit Exchange in Liverpool city centre was once a hive of activity.
The building was originally built in 1888 as a railway goods depot for the London and North Western Railway, to serve Exchange Station on Tithebarn Street.
It was later converted into a fruit exchange in 1923 by James B. Hutchins and soon became the main trading point for fruit within the city.
Hundreds of people would gather in the exchange halls and bid for fruit which had just arrived in Liverpool from all around the world
Find out what's going on in your local area by entering your postcode below:
Towards the end of the last century, the warehouses were converted into pubs, with parts of the former marketplace still serving as licensed bars, like Rubber Soul.
What's left of the property that isn't involved in Liverpool's nightlife is now classed as a Grade II listed building.
Today the old auction rooms now sadly lie empty and covered in dust.
Theatre Royal
Situated on the north side of Williamson Square in the city centre was the now demolished Theatre Royal.
First opening its doors on June 5, 1772, the Theatre Royal was later rebuilt in 1802 with a striking curved facade designed by John Foster.
It hosted readings by Charles Dickens, appearances by comedian and clowning pioneer Joseph Grimaldi, and performances by Hungarian composer Franz Liszt and virtuoso violinist Niccol Paganini.
But by the early 20th century the theatre had been stripped out and was used as a cold store.
Its facade survived until 1971 - inspiring the curved Playhouse extension next door but it was flattened for road improvements.
Stanley Dock Market
Stanley Dock Market sadly closed in December 2011 after being based in the same building for thirty years.
It came after plans were approved to redevelopment the Grade II-listed Tobacco Warehouse at Stanley Dock.
The iconic building has since been restored and converted into a 130m residential development after laying derelict for decades.
Photos from our archives show the hustle and bustle of Stanley Dock Market back in its hey day.
Overhead Railway
The Liverpool Overhead Railway opened in 1893 and was the first electrically-operated elevated railway in the world.
Known as the "railway in the sky" helped to ease congestion on the docks and served as a stunning architectural backdrop to our busy and bustling industrial city and port.
It ceased operation on December 30, 1956 and by 1958 it had been demolished.
Today the only reminder of it is a display inside the Museum of Liverpool.
Liverpool's lost football stadium
Back in the Victorian era, Liverpool Caledonians FC was one of the leading clubs in the city.
Despite the part they played in Liverpool's sporting heritage, relatively little is known about the club and where they played.
While records show that Woodcroft Park, a 30,000- capacity stadium in Wavertree, was the home of Liverpool Caledonians FC, the exact location of the stadium remains a mystery.
It's a puzzle historians from the Wavertree Society have been trying to solve for years
Liverpool's Wellington Rooms
Liverpool's Wellington Rooms, also known as Liverpool Irish Centre, has not been in regular use since 1997.
The Neo-Classical building on Mount Pleasant, was designed by Edmund Aikin and built between 1815 and 1816.
Originally built to be an assembly room, it was first used by high society for assemblies, dance balls and parties.
The building officially opened as Liverpool Irish Centre on 1 February 1965 hosting music and drama performances as well as serving as a base for clubs and societies.
Today the building sadly lies empty and unused, over two years after urgent work was carried out to slow the decay of the landmark.

Bill Gates Says That Going to Mars Is Silly – Futurism
Posted: at 2:22 pm
He also had something to say about fellow billionaire Elon Musk.Mars Person
When it comes to securing humanitys survival in the face of climate change, billionaire Microsoft founder Bill Gates would rather save Earth than flee from it.
Escaping to Mars, a dream goal for SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and other techno-utopian thinkers, just isnt for him, Gates said on The New York Times podcast Sway. Instead, he argues that theres more important work to be done here on Earth, like investing in decarbonizing various industries or developing and distributing vaccines. Compared to all that, Gates simply doesnt see the appeal of traveling or escaping to the Red Planet.
To be fair, Gates also took time to commend Musk on the podcast, saying that what he accomplished with his electric vehicle company Tesla is one of the greatest contributions to climate change anyones ever made.
But he also said that tackling electric vehicles is easy compared to the work it will take to clean up other industries, and investing in rockets or Mars journeys instead of focusing on those other problems is a missed opportunity.
Were basically not doing enough on the hard stuff: steel, cement, meat, Gates said. And sadly, the things people think about the electricity, passenger cars are a third of the problem. So we have to work on the two-thirds.
When it comes to rockets, and especially rockets to Mars, Gates says hed rather spend his money on things like vaccines or other measures to help people on Earth.
No, Im not a Mars person, Gates said on Sway. I know a lot of Mars people. But, you know, Im not subject to that.
When it comes to that cost-benefit analysis, in other words, the vaccines will win every time and Bill Gates is a practical guy.

Coronavirus Cases Around the World Are Finally Dropping – Futurism

The number of new coronavirus cases decreased in 44 US states this past week an improvement thats mirrored by much of the rest of the world.
On average, there were about 82,000 new confirmed COVID-19 infections per day throughout the United States over the last week, according to Axios. Case numbers in a handful of states are still on the rise, but the numbers represent a 24 percent drop in overall coronavirus infections, nation-wide, below the previous week. Around the world, similar reductions in coronavirus cases are happening too: The World Health Organization announced Wednesday that theres been a 16 percent drop in new cases over the past week, according to Deutsche Welle.
Thats great news, and it will make things much easier on healthcare systems around the world. But, to be absolutely clear, the pandemic is far from over, and everyone has to stay vigilant if we ever want it to be.
Theres no single, outstanding reason why cases are on the decline. Instead, its likely a combination of factors including the accelerating vaccine rollout, policy changes with the presidential transition, and shifts in personal behavior, University of Florida biostatistician Natalie Dean suggested on Twitter.
In addition, the holiday season is finally over. So the spike in cases linked to peoples increased travel and, as Dean put it, our temporarily expanded social networks might have finally receded, returning us to a sort of baseline level of new infections.
Theres another, perhaps less-robust observation: Infections in the US hit their peak and started to decline right when Donald Trump was banned from Twitter.
Many of those explanations are US-centric, of course, but DW reports that the WHO credits lockdowns and increased vaccinations as major factors in the global decrease in new COVID-19 infections.
We may not know what the exact, specific factors that made the biggest difference were until well after the fact, when epidemiologists and other experts have time to pore over and make sense of all the data.
But in the meantime, the obvious recommendation is to keep on staying put, wear your masks, wash your hands, and get a vaccine as soon as you can.

Cities are literally starting to sink under their own weight even as climate change is causing sea levels to rise, ScienceAlert [one word] reports.
In a study published in the journal AGU Advances, Tom Parsons, a geophysicist at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) agency, found that cities such as San Francisco may have sunk up to 80 millimeters, or just over three inches, in its history.
It may even be a lot more than that, as Parsons calculations dont even account for infrastructure, vehicles, or people.
Its a bad predicament, in other words, for the Bay Area and likely other metropolises. At the same time that risk is growing from rising sea levels, the cities themselves are sinking down toward the ocean.
Parsons found that subsidence, the gradual downward settling of the grounds surface, was not insignificant in built-up metropolitan regions.
As global populations move disproportionately toward the coasts, this additional subsidence in combination with expected sea level rise may exacerbate risk associated with inundation, Parsons writes in his paper.
Cities have built up so much that the city of San Francisco could weigh as much as 1.6 trillion kilograms, enough to literally bend the rocky outermost shell of the Earth, otherwise known as the lithosphere.
Such an immense weight could even end up changing levels of our planets fault blocks, large masses of rock created by tectonic stresses in the Earths crust.
In his paper, Parsons argues that satellite or air photos could be used to make more detailed analyses in likely flood zones as sea levels continue rising. Flooding is the greatest hazard associated with subsidence, as Parsons explains in his paper.
As the effects of climate change come into focus, coastal cities are under the threat of literally going under. And that risk will only grow if theyre simultaneously sinking into the Earth.
