My charity Easter egg post was dairy shamed: what happened to the milk of human kindness? – The Guardian

Posted: March 31, 2021 at 5:22 am

A few days ago, I was asked to share a Facebook post for a charity Im working with, one that provides groceries and food for Crawleys most vulnerable families. In the message, people were asked to donate Easter eggs to families who cant afford them; it was accompanied by a stock photo of a load of eggs. I shared the post without a seconds thought. So far, so Romesh looks like a great guy.

A couple of hours later, I checked to see if any donations had been made. I was surprised to see some people asking me if I was still vegan, because they were concerned that I had shared a picture of dairy products. I was worried that these comments would detract from the charitys cause, so I removed them, keeping my original post intact and on message. So far, so Romesh looks like a great guy who has effectively dealt with his naysayers.

I went to look at the post a little later and, in short, found that it was on fire. Some vegans had been notified that I had blocked the negative comments and had gone online to tell me, in my unwanted role as a moderator of plant-based dissenters, how disappointed they were that I had betrayed my vegan roots. Somehow they had decided that I was therefore also responsible for Nestls activities in Africa (I think there was a KitKat egg in the picture).

Silencing the critics hadnt worked, so I decided to respond. I said that, although I didnt support Nestl, or in fact dairy products in general, I was overlooking that to help children in the local area and to support a charity that needed as much support as it could get. I asked anyone who found my behaviour contradictory or hypocritical to unfollow. So far, so Romesh has put together some compelling arguments we could all learn from and isnt he still a really great guy?

It turns out I may as well have poured petrol all over my Facebook page. There was an onslaught of angry vegans saying I was encouraging the exploitation of animals, and an onslaught of angry other people saying vegans should get over themselves and that this was exactly why people hated them so much.

I am amazed by how passionate these principled vegans are, as well as confused by why they think this tactic might be effective. As far as I can see, it only seems to antagonise everyone else and confirm the opinion that we vegans are a humourless bunch of sanctimonious twats.

Still, I respect their passion. I also think they are awful, but I respect their awfulness. In fact, I understand how they became so hardcore. You become vegan for various reasons, but it often comes back to the idea that harming a sentient being seems abhorrent. So it can become increasingly frustrating when everyone else seems to be very relaxed about something you find horrendous.

However, had I been a vegan who found myself disagreeing with someones charity post, I might have tried using a little soft persuasion to encourage them to my way of thinking. Or maybe I might have donated some vegan Easter eggs to the cause, so I could really feel the warm hug of moral superiority, rather than attacking the post quite publicly and alienating a huge number of people.

Having said that, I didnt privately message them back. I publicly posted what I thought of them and even blocked some because I was so annoyed. Now Im writing about it. So far, so hypocritical. And this all coming from the guy who left Twitter because it was toxic. At this rate, the only place left for me will be Friends Reunited.

Godzilla vs. Kong Finds the Balance Between Monster and Human – Film School Rejects

Posted: at 5:22 am

The primary critical argument against the three previous films in the MonsterVerse franchise Godzilla (2014), Kong: Skull Island (2017), and Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) has been focused almost exclusively on the human element. Basically, the human characters and storylines in those three films long overstay their welcome, and the issue is exacerbated by idiocy, convoluted details, and more. The counter has always been that you dont watch a giant monster movie for the humans, but while thats true, their ubiquitous presence has always been hard to shake. King of the Monsters came close, but its the fourth film in the franchise thats finally gotten the balance right as Godzilla vs. Kong focuses on the big brutes and leaves the people to fight for scraps of attention at their feet.

Its been five years since Godzilla declared himself king of the monsters, and these days he only pops up periodically to destroy high-tech laboratories. King Kong, meanwhile, is living a far more sheltered life as Monarch the shadowy organization overseeing titan activity has erected a dome over Skull Island to keep Kong in and Godzilla out. It cant last forever, though, so when an ex-scientist named Nathan Lind (Alexander Skarsgrd) comes asking if Kong can come out to play his keepers say yes. Nathan needs the great ape to help them find an ancient power source in the earths hollow core, and Ilene Andrews (Rebecca Hall) needs a new home for the big lug, so its a win-win. Well, in theory, as the two titans seem inexorably drawn towards each other, and both have bloodlust in their eyes.

Godzilla vs. Kong succeeds because it understands the very first rule of a giant monster movie is to focus on the damn giant monsters. There are plenty of humans scrambling around including a couple of returning characters Mark Russell (Kyle Chandler) and his daughter Madison (Millie Bobby Brown) and several new ones, but theyre thankfully and blissfully kept to a relative minimum in favor of Kong and Godzilla. Director Adam Wingard does fine work with his first blockbuster (and you just know hes to credit for the Lethal Weapon 2 nod), but its the CG spectacle, monster mayhem, and epic carnage that rule the screen.

While there are attractive visuals throughout, primarily in the hollow earth and Hong Kong, the films not quite the showcase for gorgeous shots that the two previous movies managed to be. Its still a movie best watched loudly and on the biggest screen at your disposal, though, as both Godzilla and Kong are beautifully rendered as is the destruction left in their wake. Cybernetic factories in Florida and Hong Kong are leveled, monstrous threats lurk in the hollow earth, and a face-off out at sea plays havoc with a naval fleet. Its thrilling stuff, and the action remains clear throughout keeping everything in understandable geography.

The one hiccup on that front, though, is an inconsistent scale between the two titans of Godzilla vs. Kong. Its acknowledged that Kong has grown since we last saw him, but ships and aircraft seem to give a fluctuating sense of size between the two as sometimes the ape looks smaller than Godzilla while they appear evenly matched elsewhere. Its far from a deal-breaker as the action and spectacle hold focus.

The script, by Eric Pearson and Max Borenstein, still manages plenty of the expected human silliness, but either through restraint or post-production editing, its never overwhelming or enough to drag down the films momentum. Fighter pilots still fly within arms reach of the giant beasts, theres still a weird bond between titans and little girls, and brilliant scientists capable of reaching the earths hollow-core inexplicably need Kong to find them a very obvious magic mountain for them, but the monsters take precedence. The desire to ensure human characters play a pivotal role does become laughable once or twice as the writers throw them a bone for a brief heroic moment or feeling of continuity seriously, remove both Madison and her father and not a single element would have played out differently here but Godzilla vs. Kong belongs to big guys.

This is the shortest of the four films, and the action and momentum keep things moving at a strong pace. Junkie XLs score adds to the adrenalized feeling, and the personable nature of the cast helps ensure an easy watch. The body count is high, like tens of thousands high, but the overwhelming majority are off-screen or as unseen specks within the CG devastation. We get the expected themes greed and a hunger for power are bad; working together is good; people are endlessly stupid but we also get an energetic action film featuring big, messy brawls, giant monsters, Kong scratching his bare ass on his way to the shower, and more. Honestly, what more could you want in a MonsterVerse movie? Now go see Godzilla vs. Kong so theyll make another one and we can finally get Godzillas adopted son, Minilla, back on the big screen where he belongs.

California bear cubs developing unexplained illness that makes them unafraid of humans – CTV News

Posted: at 5:22 am

TORONTO -- Scientists are warning about an unexplained neurological disorder found in black bear cubs in California that causes the animals to exhibit uncharacteristic and overly friendly behaviours.

But they aren't sure why this is happening.

According to a press release from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), four cubs in the past 12 months have shown "dog-like" behaviours, including being comfortable around humans.

The CDFW says it encountered one of these bears last month -- a small, female black bear in Pollock Pines, east of Sacramento.

The CDFW was alerted to the bear after it had moved into a residential backyard.

A biologist with the department reported that the bear was lethargic, underweight, and showed no fear of people, picking up apples and eating them in front of the residents on their backyard patio.

The CDFW said the bear did not respond to the people yelling or clapping, and at one point jumped into a housekeeper's open car trunk.

"Physically and mentally, the bear just didnt seem quite right, walking oddly, dull and not responsive like a normal bear should be," the department said in the release.

According to the release, the bear was taken to CDFWs Wildlife Investigations Laboratory for observation by veterinarians. They reported that the cub displayed "intermittent head tremors" and a subtle head tilt, which are "troubling signs of neurological abnormalities."

According to preliminary findings, scientists say the behaviours are linked to encephalitis, or inflammation in the brain.

However, the CDFW says the root cause of the inflammation "remains a mystery."

While scientists arent sure what's causing the encephalitis, theyve identified five new viruses in the sick bears, though the department says their relationship to the condition and the neurological disorders arent clear.

The CFDW previously told The Sacramento Bee that the viruses dont appear to be a risk to humans.

Officials in Nevada were first to notice the abnormal behaviours in bears, alerting wildlife colleagues in California in 2014 to growing human encounters in the Tahoe Basin with young black bears.

The CDFW says the situation has become more common elsewhere around the state.

One bear with these symptoms gained attention on social media in 2019 when it approached a snowboarder at the Northstar ski resort. In a video shared to Instagram, the bear is seen stepping onto the snowboard and sniffing the snowboarder's pant leg.

That bear, named Benji, was treated for the disorder at the San Diego Humane Society's Ramona Campus. He is now three-years-old and continues to live at the campus.

Despite this, the CFDW says Benji's story is "something of a cautionary tale" as he has never fully recovered and has required "significant veterinary care" over the years.

CDFW wildlife veterinarian Brandon Munk said in the release that it is "not possible" for these neurologically impaired bears to be released back into the wild, for fear of spreading the disease to other animals.

"At this point, we dont know what causes the encephalitis so we dont know what, if any, health risks these bears might pose to other animals," Munk explained.

Munk said that having the bears live the rest of their lives out at a zoo or wildlife sanctuary is a rare scenario, as care expenses are difficult for many wildlife facilities to take on and limit placement options.

"The few bears like this we have placed do not seem to fully recover, some requiring significant medical management for the life of the bear, which is a huge burden for these facilities that often operate on tight budgets," he said.

The female black bear found in Pollock Pines was euthanized. The CDFW says a post-mortem examination is underway.

Sumo as a religious rite in Japan – Union of Catholic Asian News

Posted: at 5:01 am

We are all very much familiar with the Japanese national sport of sumo. The athletes topknots, the bowing to each other before the matches and the iconic foot stomps (shiko) inside the ring are recognizable features. But as foreigners we rarely understand the deep religious meaning of it all.

Before we delve into the nature of the sport, it is important to understand the concrete dynamics at play inside a sumo training facility.

We are in the Koto district of Tokyo, one of the most important sumo (heya) schools in all of Japan. Here the wrestlers live together as in a large family home. In this one, there are 22 wrestlers; the youngest is just 16, the oldest 36. Years ago, it would have been superfluous to specify their nationality, but not anymore. In fact, more and more foreigners have been successfully breaching the Japanese monopoly in this sport. From 2002 to 2016, Mongolian wrestlers in the top division won 81 out of 88 championships despite a rule that only allows one foreigner per heya.

Fewer and fewer Japanese are joining sumo schools. The typical recruit was usually a young man from a disadvantaged family in a rural area. But in recent years the trend is for young people to move as soon as possible to the big cities for study or for work, certainly not to enlist in the most anachronistic of all armieswith the strictest discipline and absolute obedience to their superiors rules.

It is by no coincidence that now, in front of us spectators, one of the younger recruits gets beaten on the backside by one of the older fighters because, they tell me, he was late last night (apparently he had one too many drinks with some friends). He broke a team rule that says everyone has to go to bed at the same time. A few years ago, a 17-year-old fighter lost his life in training as the result of being heavily punished.

In football, there is a old saying thatits not a sport for delicate girls. In time it became politically incorrect, but everyone knows the truth at the core of it. In sumo, it is not even enough to be a strong man you have to be almost superhuman, not only in physical strength but also in nature and mentality. If you want to compete at the highest levels, you really need exceptional drive.

And sometimes that drive has less to do with the hunger for victory than with real hunger. A lot of the young foreigners who enlist in these schools come from humble families who can spare many kids.

Just like the football players who move from Latin America to Europe dreaming of the Champions League, so these boys want to conquer the highest ranks in sumo. Being successful not only translatesto the self-fulfilment of a goal, it also means being able to take care of their families in their country of origin. A yokozuna top division fighter can even earn US$2 million a year.

In short, young foreigners come to Japan to fight their own private war of social redemption, parallel to that in the stadiums in front of a paying public.

As they began practice, all the fighters start doing something unusual, at least in the eyes of someone who thinks hes assisting at a sport performance.

They all turn their gaze to the altar and sip sake in honour of the divinity. And whats more is that perhaps this is the most important part of the whole preparation of the sumo wrestler (rikishi in Japanese): that is the enactment of thanksgiving to the god who in this case is symbolically represented by three twigs of sakaki (the sacred tree) placed high above a wall that demarcates the dohyo, the arena of combat.

We few spectators sit silently behind them on comfortable zabuton, the traditional square meditation cushion.

The sumo wrestlers now all execute that typical gesture that seems to announce the coming battle the raising of the knees in the air from a sitting position, with legs apart, and then slamming the feet on the floor violently. This ritual, called shiko, was formerly intended to keep evil spirits at bay.

Another common practice for the rikishi is to throw several handfuls of salt into the ring to purify it. Sumo is intrinsically linked to Japan's native religion, Shinto, or "the way of the gods."

Sumo was in fact originally conceived as a ritual to entertain the kami (gods) during the matsuri (festivals). The same robe worn by the referee resembles the traditional one worn by a Shinto priest.

Its not hard to tell that sumo is a sport that carries an ancient tradition on its back: the wrestlers long hair ends with a topknot (chonmage). This hairstyle was once the norm, so much so that anyone who has ever watched a Japanese movie set in the 16th century will soon recognize it. In short, it is a way to honor tradition.

A tradition that, contrary to modern sports, when it comes to formalizing the quality of an athlete will also assess the presence of strong moral values.

In fact, to reach the highest, and almost sacred, ranking of yokozuna, it is not enough to win fight after fight, it is also necessary to demonstrate the right moral attributes, which will be evaluated by a special committee.

And so the fighter who arrived here as a teenager from a remote area of Inner Mongolia is not only training his muscles, hes going through a genuine conversion of its own spirit, and if victorious he will be blessed with all the honors akin to a semi-god.

Oregon brothers accused in U.S. Capitol riot ordered held – The Register-Guard

US points to organized extremists in Capitol riot

Authorities investigating the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol say two extremist groups that traveled to Washington along with thousands of other Trump supporters weren't whipped into an impulsive frenzy by President Donald Trump. (March 10)

AP

PORTLAND Two brothers arrested this week in Oregon on federal charges of participating in the U.S. Capitol insurrection will be held in custody pending trial on six felony charges.

Matthew Klein, 24, and Jonathanpeter Klein, 21, appeared separately on Friday before U.S. Magistrate Judge Zia M. Faruqui in the District of Columbia court via video conference from Portland, The Oregonian/OregonLive reported.

Both are expected to remain detained at least until their next court hearing scheduled for April 1. The brothers are being held at the Multnomah County Detention Center in Portland.

The federal magistrate judge who presided over the brothers' hearings cited a ruling out Friday from a U.S. District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals panel regarding a Tennessee mother and son charged in the Jan. 6 riot who challenged their pre-trial detention.

Previous coverage: 2 Oregon brothers arrested in U.S. Capitol insurrection

The appeals panel wrote that in its view "those who actually assaulted police officers and broke through windows, doors, and barricades and those who aided, conspired with, planned or coordinated such actions, are in a different category of dangerousness than those who cheered on the violence or entered the Capitol after others cleared the way."

The Kleins were among the first group to breach the Capitol about 2:16 p.m., after Matthew Klein helped others climb a wall to gain access to a stairwell leading to the Capitol's Upper West Terrace, prosecutors have said. Prosecutors have also alleged they wrenched open a door on the north side of the U.S. Capitol after having already entered and exited the building.

"The exact example of what the court gave is what the defendant has done," Faruqui said during Jonathanpeter Klein's hearing.

Jonathanpeter Klein has described himself as a member of the far-right extremist Proud Boys group, which calls itself a politically incorrect men's club for "Western chauvinists."

He was photographed on Jan. 5 with his brother while wearing a Proud Boys shirt. That helped law enforcement identify the brothers, the FBI has said.

Matthew Klein also faces charges in Multnomah County where he is accused of carrying a loaded firearm in a truck after Portland police stopped it leaving a Proud Boys rally in September, according to court records. Those charges were pending when he participated in the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol, the prosecutor said.

The brothers have not yet entered pleas to the federal charges including conspiracy to defraud the United States, obstruction of an official proceeding, obstruction of law enforcement during a civil disorder, destruction of government property, entering a restricted building, and disorderly conduct.

Jonathanpeter Klein's defense lawyer Michelle Sweet had urged for her client to be released pending trial.

She said he could if released to continue to work at a ranch in eastern Oregon. Nanci Klein, the brothers' mother, wrote a letter to the court saying that they could stay at her home.

The Kleins are among hundreds charged in the insurrection. The attack temporarily delayed certification of the presidential election.

The problems that arise when politics and academia intersect – The Times of India Blog

Posted: at 5:01 am

See baba, I am not a chancellor, vice-chancellor, professor, lecturer or peon of any grand university. But I like to think I am educated matlab I have been to a good school and college, got myself a degree (never collected it, though), and have zero complaints to air about the quality of my education. As is the case of millions of others in India, I also think we were pretty fortunate to have been taught by inspiring, even brilliant teachers. We didnt always agree with their political/social/cultural/religious views, and they never asked for ours. There was never any khitpit in this regard. Some of them wrote well-researched academic papers, some penned blistering newspaper columns, some preferred poetry and a few were published authors. We admired our faculty members and applauded their achievements.

Now suddenly we have an international cause celebre revolving around a genius-prof called Pratap Bhanu Mehta (Oxford, Princeton, Harvard), whose outspoken columns are widely read and energetically dissected. He represents a new breed of progressive thinkers who call themselves public intellectuals.

So why all the fire and brimstone over his decision to quit? An intellectually celebrated, immensely sought after professor decides to step away from an environment which he feels is not conducive to his politics so what? It does not signal the end of the world. He is a free man, and entitled to take such a call. No jabardasti to hang around feeling unwelcome, right? But its not all that simple, I say! Nothing is as hunky dory (love its usage in the Supreme Court this week) as it appears. The chancellor and vice chancellor of the university are strenuously explaining themselves, while the Board of Trustees insists it has nothing to do with the mess. Some of its 100-plus donors are reportedly offended. Ninety faculty members expressed solidarity with Mehta. Then why are so many red-faced, self-styled spokespeople jumping out of the woodwork?

What is not being spelt out clearly and unequivocally is simply this: Pratap Bhanu Mehta is seen as being openly and virulently anti-government, which may have not gone down well with the bosses at Ashoka.

Fair enough. Which means they are either pro-BJP but not admitting it, or pressure is being exerted on them to tame Mehta and his ilk. Which is it? And what exactly is at stake? One of them candidly admitted in his column that this unpleasantness in the public domain could lead to funds drying up and investors losing faith in the future of the university. Is it then, only about money? Grants? Subsidies? Education is big business today. No harm in protecting ones investment but why not be upfront about it?

Pratap Bhanu Mehta had become a political liability (his words). If a university calls itself independent and claims to encourage liberal thought, why would someone like Mehta be made to feel unwanted? And why now? He has consistently been a critic of the present government, undisguisedly so. Wheres the surprise? Was this not known to those who appointed him? Has he dramatically changed his stance recently? Was there no screening process in place when he joined Ashoka? Was he told he was no longer free to write anti-establishment political commentary if he signed up with Ashoka? As we all know, such sensitive issues are never tabled, much less documented. If the Board now says these issues did not come up during his tenure of course they didnt theres nothing on record! Who was going to tell Mehta, Hey, look here old chap just go easy, wont you? We are feeling the heat.

Either you call yourself an unbiased, open and democratic institution, or you declare your political affiliations of whichever shade and colour and leave it there. You cannot have it both ways and pull out the martyr card when things start slipping. The students have the right to know where they stand vis a vis the universitys politics. Look, its perfectly okay to say Ashoka is pro a political party thats not a crime. Just say it, na? But stop the charade of pretending to be neutral.

Whether a professor with attitude stays or leaves is hardly the main issue. But it definitely marks a big moment in the universitys alarmingly young history.

Mehta at the moment is a folk hero he will go on to other academic positions and perhaps bigger things. His critics call him a closet politician, and say he will cash in on the controversy. But what will Ashoka University do to retrieve some of its dented glory? Rightly or wrongly, public opinion is backing the man whose political leanings cost him a prestigious appointment. Its now up to the lofty folks at the university to regroup, rethink and come up with some much-needed damage control before some more grants and funds from donors dry up.

Views expressed above are the author's own.

Battlefield 6 leaker claims slightly futuristic setting with drones and robots – Gamesradar

Posted: at 4:50 am

Several new Battlefield 6 details have been revealed by a storied leaker of EA's game, including a somewhat futuristic setting.

As you can see below, reputable Battlefield-related leaker Tom Henderson has published a newsletter outlining several new details about the unannounced Battlefield 6. In the newsletter, Henderson claims that Battlefield 6 has a slightly futuristic setting, being set around 10 years in the future from the present day.

Through this, Battlefield 6's developers will be able to implement technology that is only just being experimented with by today's military, according to Henderson. We should expect to see military robots, drones, and jets, as well as your usual helicopters and tanks.

Battlefield 6 will feature a "revolutionary" campaign, according to Henderson's newsletter. You'll operate a specialist team, and you can select which superpower to fight for: the USA, or Russia. Additionally, the campaign will feature co-op support throughout, so you'll be able to fight in your squad alongside your friends.

Apparently, Henderson has heard Battlefield 6's multiplayer referred to as "Battlefield 3/4 on steroids," and bigger and better than before. The leaker also claims that there's a battle royale mode on the way, but possibly after the main game launches, where you'll be able to play as one of four classes, each with different perks.

Finally, Henderson reveals that this year's Battlefield will simply be called "Battlefield." There's no added flair on this year's shooter from EA, and we can expect to see a reveal trailer in May without actual gameplay, which lines up with what a journalist at Venture Beat previously claimed.

Rumors of a Battlefield game launching in 2021 first circulated in January, when Henderson claimed that EA was designing the forthcoming game's maps with 128 players in mind. At the time, Henderson also claimed that the unannounced Battlefield game would be heavily inspired by Battlefield 3, welcome news if you're a fan of the series' past.

Last month, an EA official revealed that Criterion was being recruited to help develop the unannounced Battlefield game with EA DICE. Criterion's Need For Speed game is being put on the back burner temporarily, as both studios are going full tilt in an attempt to ship Battlefield later this year. Whatever the final game might end up looking like, there might be less than two months to go until we finally get a glimpse at the next Battlefield.

For a complete list of all the other games slated to launch at some point over the coming year, head over to our new games 2021 guide for more.

Smoking Will Disappear Within a Generation, Experts Say – Futurism

Posted: at 4:50 am

Image by Lindsay Fox via Flickr

According to experts at analyst firm Jefferies, Bloomberg reports, smokers may soon be poised to disappear from many markets.

With regulators and tobacco ambitions increasingly aligned, in many countries, no smokers within a generation could become a reality, analyst Owen Bennett wrote in a recent statement. If smoke-free is to happen, this is only achieved with the support of [reduced-risk products, including e-cigarettes and vapes].

Citigroup Inc. is also of the impression that the number of smokers will drastically be reduced in the near future. In fact, the investment bank believes smoking will disappear by 2050 from much of the developed world, including the US, parts of Europe, and Australia, according to Bloomberg. The number of children smoking dropped by almost three quarters in just 20 years.

The news symbolizes a major shift. Big Tobacco now has to reposition to stay competitive, switching from traditional tobacco products to e-cigarettes and other vapor products.

Philip Morris, for instance, signaled last summer that cigarette sales may grind to a complete halt.

I am convinced it is possible to completely end cigarette sales in many countries within 10 to 15 years, CEO Andre Calantzopoulos wrote in a sustainability report at the time.

The company is now hard at work switching its consumers over to smoke-free products. Its target: 40 million adult smokers to switch by 2025.

Humans Are Rapidly Losing the Ability to Procreate, Scientist Warns – Futurism

Posted: at 4:50 am

An environmental medicine professor is sounding the alarm on humanitys rapidly declining fertility rates and she says chemicals in plastics are largely to blame.

Shanna Swan, professor of environmental medicine and public health at Mount Sinais Icahn School of Medicine in New York City, helped complete a major study in 2017 that discovered sperm count amongst men in Western countries has dropped by more than 50 percent over the past four decades, according to The Guardian. Last month, she released her book Count Down that dives into how and why humans are losing their ability to procreate.

People are recognizing we have a reproductive health crisis, but they say its because of delayed childbearing, choice or lifestyle it cant be chemical, Swan said to the Guardian. I want people to recognize it can. I am not saying other factors arent involved. But I am saying chemicals play a major causal role.

In the 2017 study published in Human Reproduction Update, researchers discovered that sperm concentration fell from 99 million per ml in 1973 to 47.1 million per ml in 2011. That represents a steep sperm count decline of 53.4% in men in western countries such as Australia, New Zealand, North America, and Europe.

According to Swan, one of the primary drivers are chemicals that interfere with or mimic the bodys sex hormones.

Phthalates, used to make plastic soft and flexible, are of paramount concern, Swan said. They are in everybody and we are probably primarily exposed through food as we use soft plastic in food manufacture, processing and packaging.

She continued, They lower testosterone and so have the strongest influences on the male side, for example diminishing sperm count, though they are bad for women, too, shown to decrease libido and increase risk of early puberty, premature ovarian failure, miscarriage and premature birth.

Swan says that the rate of fertility decline isnt just an odd quirk that can be easily solved with reproductive therapies like in-vitro fertilization. It actually poses an existential threat to humanity. In fact, she projects the world is on track to be completely infertile by 2045.

The current state of reproductive affairs cant continue much longer without threatening human survival, Swan writes in Count Down.

Though this situation seems dire (and it is), there is some hope. She says that we need the chemical industry to develop new non-hormonally active chemicals for domestic use. Also, those who plan to have children should be wary of the plastics they bring into their home such as Teflon, BPA, and phthalates.

Otherwise, Children of Men might look more like a documentary than a fictional movie one day

There Appears to Be a Huge Chunk of an Ancient Planet Buried Inside Earth – Futurism

Posted: at 4:50 am

Theia's impact with the Earth created the Moon and perhaps left some shrapnel behind.Ancient Shrapnel

There are two gigantic blobs of densematerial lurking in the lower depths of the Earths mantle beneath West Africa and the Pacific Ocean. Thousands of miles wide, the blobs have been one of the planets best-kept secrets and baffled for scientists for decades.

Now, theres mounting evidence that the blobs might be remnant shards from an ancient protoplanet named Theia that crashed into the Earth around 4.5 billion years ago, Science Magazine reports. Scientists previously suspected there was a link between the blobs, formally known as large low-shear velocity provinces (LLSVPs), and the Moon, but most thought the LLSVPs were planetary scars from Theias impact, not pieces of the alien world itself.

To be fair, this isnt the first time that scientists have speculated that the underground blobs were remnant shards of Theia, Science reports. But Qian Yuan, the Arizona State University graduate student who presented the idea at last weeks Lunar and Planetary Science Conference, seems to have made the most compelling case yet.

I think its completely viable until someone tells me its not, Arizona State seismologist Edward Garnero, who didnt work on the study, told Science.

The smoking gun in Yuans work, as it were, is seismological evidence that the LLSVPs are chemically different from the rest of the mantle rock that surrounds them. That suggests that the blobs have extraterrestrial origins and because theyre six times more massive than the Moon, something as large as a protoplanet would have had to shear them off.

Even though the research remains somewhat speculative, seismologists emboldened by studies like Yuans are increasingly convinced that other pieces of otherworldly shrapnel could also be hiding beneath the Earths surface, according to Science. Uncovering them, they suspect, could help reveal that Earths ancient past was far more violent than what we know so far.
