Tuesday, February 17, 2015, 10:19 - In as little as 10 years, the first humans may set foot on the planet Mars, and six Canadians are still in the running to be one of them.

Mars One, a project that aims to begin the colonization of Mars starting in the year 2025, has made another round of cuts to its list of candidates, reducing the number of potential colonists down to just 100 - 50 men and 50 women.

Originally, over 200,000 people signed up for the project, nearly 2,000 of whom were Canadian, all vying for one of 24 one-way tickets to Mars. The first-round cuts, from back in January 2014, were deep. The multitudes that excitedly signed up to go were whittled down to just 660 contenders, which included 75 Canadians.

This second cut, which was made after the selection committee interviewed each candidate, has dropped the number down to just 100.

"The large cut in candidates is an important step towards finding out who has the right stuff to go to Mars," Bas Lansdorp, Co-founder & CEO of Mars One, said in a press release. "These aspiring Martians provide the world with a glimpse into who the modern day explorers will be."

Included in this third-round list are six Canadians:

Daniel Criger, 28 PhD candidate Waterloo, Ont.

Reginald Foulds, 60 'Jack of all Trades' Toronto, Ont.

Andreea Radulescu, 33 IT Analyist Toronto, Ont.

One hundred people are still in the running to become humanity's first Mars explorers.

The Netherlands-based nonprofit Mars One, which aims to land four pioneers on the Red Planet in 2025 as the vanguard of a permanent colony, has whittled its pool of astronaut candidates down to 100, organization representatives announced Monday, Feb. 16.

More than 202,000 people applied to become Red Planet explorers after Mars One opened the selection process in April 2013. The latest cut came after Mars One medical director Norbert Kraft interviewed the 660 candidates who had survived several previous rounds of culling. [Images of Mars One's Red Planet Colony Project]

"The large cut in candidates is an important step towards finding out who has the right stuff to go to Mars," Mars One co-founder and CEO Bas Lansdorp said in a statement. "These aspiring Martians provide the world with a glimpse into who the modern day explorers will be."

The remaining pool consists of 50 men and 50 women who range in age from 19 to 60, Mars One representatives said. Thirty-nine come from the Americas (including 33 from the United States), 31 from Europe, 16 from Asia, seven from Africa and seven from Australia.

The remaining candidates will next participate in group challenges, to demonstrate their ability and willingness to deal with the rigors of Mars life. After another round of cuts, the finalists will be divided into four-person teams, which will train in a simulated Red Planet outpost.

Eventually, Mars One intends to select 24 astronauts (six four-person teams), who will become full-time employees of the organization and prepare for the Mars colonization mission.

How badly do you want to go to Mars? So badly that youre willing to make it a one-way trip. And if youre lucky, LUCKY, you might get a chance to live out a full life on the surface of the Red Planet a place thats totally inhospitable to human life. The risks are enormous, the trip will be difficult, and the unknown challenges of trying to survive on Mars have yet to be discovered.

It baffles the imagination that anyone would be willing to put themselves in that kind of risk, turning their back on their friends and family to die (probably quickly) on an alien world. And yet, more than 200,000 people have applied to the Mars One Project, and 663 candidates have been put on the shortlist. Eventually just 4 people will be packed into a spacecraft and blasted off to the Red Planet in 2018. Once they get there, theyll need to survive with what they brought with them, and what they can scrounge from the surface of the planet. And then theyll be joined every 2 years later by another crew of potential colonists.

In this short video, the Guardian profiles three would-be Mars colonists to find out what motivates them to participate in this journey.

On its surface, the idea, of course is crazy. And Ive been skeptical from the beginning that Mars One is ever going to get off the ground, let alone get humans to the surface of Mars, alive. And even if they do arrive alive, calculations from MIT seem to indicate how theyll die will be a race between a lack of air, water, food or exposure to radiation.

But Ive also said on many occasions that human space exploration needs focus on getting humans into space, taking greater and greater steps into the Solar System, pushing the boundaries of what we know how to do. We need to turn the impossible into the possible, and the dangerous into the routine. And its great to see organizations like Mars One publicly pushing this agenda forward. If nothing else, this helps encourage the space agencies to realize that their citizens want to see them take on big challenges, and that theyre willing to endure the risks.

Elon Musk has stated that the goal for SpaceX is to support the colonization of Mars. This is why he wont take the company public until the Mars Transportation System is up and running, so it can be unhindered by shareholders who dont support the longterm goal of colonizing Mars. Considering Musks track record so far with SpaceX, Tesla and Solar City, its hard to think hell fail at anything he really puts his mind to.

Perhaps there will eventually be an alliance between SpaceX and Mars One, to support one another as they send humans on a one way trip to Mars. And maybe, these future astronauts will get to live a long life, until they die on Mars.
