2 US servicemembers make the first cut for a trip to Mars

Posted: March 8, 2015 at 4:45 pm

RAF MILDENHALL, England Company seeks interplanetary adventurers for one-way trip. Spartan living conditions. Death a near certainty.

Mars is not a hospitable planet. The average temperature is minus 80 degrees Fahrenheit, the atmosphere is not breathable nor does it provide much protection from radiation. Water is not easily obtained, and the planet is not known to have food. To live on the planet any length of time means every aspect of life must be supported by technology. Should anything go wrong, help from home would not arrive quickly the closest Mars ever comes to Earth is about 34 million miles.

Despite all of this, two U.S. servicemembers are willing spend the rest of their lives on the Red Planet.

A Naval Reserve flight test engineer and an Air National Guard cybertransport specialist are among 100 candidates vying for 24 spots to travel to Mars through a Dutch-based company, Mars One.

Although experts in space exploration have cast doubt on the technical feasibility of the project, Mars One hopes to land four people on Mars in 2025 to establish the first extraterrestrial colony. Four more colonists will follow the next year and more after that.

Coming back to Earth is highly unlikely, because no one has devised a way to return from such a distance. Mars One wants to colonize the planet for the sake of exploration and in the hopes of developing new technology, but it is not willing to wait for the necessary technology to offer the colonists a way to come home.

That means the first human visitors to Mars will live and probably die there.

A one way trip (or, in other words: emigration) to Mars is currently the only way we can get people on Mars within the next 20 years, Mars One officials wrote on the company website. This in no way excludes the possibility of a return flight at some point in the future. It is likely that technological progress will make this less complex down the line.

The one-way aspect of the trip was part of the appeal for Lt. Cmdr. Oscar Mathews. Mathews, who is a test pilot at Naval Air Station Patuxent River, Md., said when he saw the trip was one way, he knew right away this mission was for him.

If youre going to go to Mars, you may as well stay on Mars because the whole reason to go to Mars is to do science and to live and to establish a habitat, Mathews said, also pointing out that by living on Mars, colonists could explore far more of the planet than a temporary mission could.

'Big Bang' recap: 'The Colonization Application'

Posted: at 9:48 pm

Its not every day that The Big Bang Theory creates a story line in which Sheldon and Amy hold hands to announce some significant news. The time is right for the love birds to take a step forward in their relationship. Break out the champagne and congratulate the happy coupleSheldon and Amy are getting a turtle!

Picking out a turtle is serious business. When Sheldon chooses a listless one in the corner, he and Amy prepare the reptile for living a life of joint custody. Amy warns the turtle that he will be staying with her during Comic-Con. Sheldon informs Giuseppe that he will be with Amy full-time if Daddys application to live on Mars is accepted. Amy blows right past the extravagant Italian turtle name, in lieu of asking Sheldon why he didnt bother to tell her that he applied to be a colonist on another planet? When Amy admits that she would have never approved, Sheldon claims he made the right choice not to tell her. All this arguing cant be good for Giuseppes self-esteem.

Across the hall, Leonard and Penny attempt to get creative using a littlesomething Leonard picked up at the naughtystore. This is way more advanced than your average dirty dice. In this sexual scenario, the couple coverthemselves in paint before doing the deed on a blank canvas. Instead of an elaborate, artistic declaration of their love, Penny and Leonards canvas looks more like a smeared letter X with two handprints on either side. Convinced that this is not a representation of their best work, Penny suggests they give it another go. The result is a display of vivid color, stretching across the canvas from corner to corner. They agree to give the artwork to Sheldon, claiming that William Shatner painted it. Keeping it would be gross due to the butt marks.

Leonard isnt the only one leaving his mark. When Raj is left alone at Emilys house, he accidentally breaks a drawer when snooping through her nightstand. He calls Howard to walk him through how to use a hammer and nails to repair the damage. Im sure youre expecting a zany ending to this wild and crazy story line, but Im afraid youre in for a disappointing third act. Raj comes clean to Emily. She punishes him by asking that he not look in her closet. I assume this is where she keeps the appendages of her mysteriously absent roommate. Emilys odd fascination with death is just plain weird. Moving on.

Meanwhile, Sheldon and Amy return to his apartment when an unfortunate got your nose moment with Giuseppe goes awry. Amy reminds Sheldon that if he can barely survive a turtle bite, theres no way he can survive life on Mars. No amount of peppermint tea will assuage Amys mood. Sheldon playing the Star Trek theme on his nose doesnt help either.

Sheldon decides to show Amy his video application which lists the reasons why he would be a perfect candidate for the Mars project. We learntwo things in this video: Animals do not trust Sheldon because he is odorless, and a pie to the face will always be funny.

Amy is annoyed that Sheldon continues to push the issue. She would like to know that when he thinks about his future, she is a part of the vision. Sheldon softly asks if shes set on the future taking place on earth? He encourages Amy to apply for the Mars trip with himas a couple. If he is going to live on a barren, lifeless planet, he wants her to be with him. Its in these sweet moments that I find Sheldon and Amys relationship so endearing.

Amy anticipates what it would be like to live on Mars, work on Mars, and procreate on Mars. Sheldon instructs her to keep it in her space pants. A hint of wonder crosses his face whenshe reminds him that their children would be Martians.

I have every confidence that Giuseppe will be on the baby name list. And so willNimoy.

Live long and prosper, Mr. Spock.

Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin lays out plan for Mars …

Just like President John F. Kennedy challenged America to land on the moon before the end of the 1960s, so too can some new leader inspire the future of space exploration on Mars, Apollo astronaut Buzz Aldrin believes.

Aldrin, 85, spoke before a packed house Tuesday at Macky Auditorium on the University of Colorado's Boulder campus.

"America must be the world leader in human space flight," he said. "There is no other area that clearly demonstrates American innovation and enterprise than human space flight."

Aldrin made history with Neil Armstrong on July 20, 1969, when the two men became the first humans to step foot on the moon as part of the Apollo 11 mission. In total, they spent 21 hours on the lunar surface gathering 46 pounds of moon rocks. Some 600 million people watched the historic scene on television.

Though Aldrin isn't a CU-Boulder alumhe went to West Point and MIT the campus has ties to 18 astronauts and a long history of space research and exploration. CU-Boulder is the No. 1 NASA-funded public university with nearly $500 million in sponsored research awards, and is leading the space agency's MAVEN mission to Mars.

Aldrin's visit was organized by the Distinguished Speakers Board, a student-fee funded group that's brought Bill Nye, B.B. King, Soledad O'Brien, Madeleine Albright and other influential people to campus.

In a speech that was humorous, but also deeply technical, Aldrin outlined his "unified space vision" for American explorationand the colonizationof Mars.

He's hoping to draw on lunar landing nostalgia to get the world, especially young people, excited again about traveling into the great unknown, he said.

Moss Beach man among 100 candidates selected for Mars colonization training

Posted: at 4:45 am

Peter Felgentreff

Several Bay Area residents and natives are among 100 people selected worldwide to begin training for a planned mission to colonize Mars in 2024.

The 100 candidates were selected from a pool of more than 200,000 applicants around the world. The 50 men and 50 women selected will now begin a selection round including group training exercises and interviews.

Eventually the Mars One foundation, a nonprofit established to set up a human colony on Mars, plans to set up outposts on Earth in areas like the desert or the Arctic for small groups to inhabit as part of their training.

The training would include scenarios like what they would do if the air supply unit stopped functioning correctly, or if they were running out of water.

Portions of the training process could be televised and organizers hope selling the broadcast rights will help to fund the mission.

One of the several Bay Area residents selected is Peter Felgentreff, 50, a technology worker who lives near Moss Beach in San Mateo County.

Im thrilled about it, Felgentreff said Tuesday.

He learned he was selected to be one of the 100 applicants this week and said he is ready to begin the extensive training necessary before he could potentially take the trip to Mars in less than a decade.

The pool of applicants includes people from a wide range of backgrounds teachers, artists, engineers but little Earth-bound experience could prepare someone to be the first person to move to another planet.
