More People Need to Watch The Best Sci-Fi Show on Prime Video – CNET

Posted: June 30, 2022 at 9:01 pm

A quick warning: I'm about to gush about The Expanse. Slather it with praise, even. But before I do, here are some things that arenot good about The Expanse.

Whenever I go full hog trying to convince someone to watch The Expanse, I like to get this list out of the way. I want people to know from the outset: This TV show is not perfect. In fact, depending on what you value in your television, you could even call The Expanse "bad."

I do not think The Expanse is bad.

On the contrary, I think The Expanse is very good. Often it's good in spite of its flaws. Sometimes it's enhanced by those flaws.

Set hundreds of years in the future when humans are spread out across the solar system, The Expanse is based on a series of hard sci-fi novels written by Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck under the pen name James S.A. Corey. It is dense with peerless universe building. It's a show about the very real perils of space travel and colonization, but also a surprisingly nuanced show that deals in interplanetary politics and class warfare.

In one corner we have Earth and all its citizens. In the other, Mars. The humans who have colonized Mars are a military-focused, tough group of people prone to resolving conflict with force. Those still on Earth are the preening, politically savvy elite.

The wild cards are the Belters, residents of outer planets and asteroid belts who have developed their own Creole-esque language and, alongside that, a culture completely separate from the humans on Earth and Mars. Sick of being trampled upon by the "Earthers," the Belters are threatening revolution, but lack the power or resources to truly strike back at their oppressors.

Everything that occurs in The Expanse stems from the tensions between these three discrete groups.

The tight knit crew of the Rocinante.

The magic of The Expanse is how effortlessly the show flits between genres. It's hard sci-fi at all times, but in its first couple of seasons, The Expanse plays out like a murder mystery. Later, it's a show about alien technology and the arms race associated with that. Then it becomes a show about exploring strange new planets. Ultimately, The Expanse is a show about all these things, but places its uniquely crafted universe at its core, giving it a through line lesser sci-fi shows don't have.

The show's aesthetic plays a similar trick. Not everyone enjoys its metallic, video-game-esque color scheme, but I like video games, so I'm a fan. The Expanse feels like how I think a Mass Effect show could feel, if that ever comes to fruition and is somehow decent. The Expanse is cool, clinical and smart -- and sometimes the wooden performances amplify that in ways that should be bad, but often feels good? In a universe that lacks warmth, dialed back, minimalist performances make sense.

Yeah, I'm confused too. But it works.

It's a very not good hat.

Ultimately, The Expanse is a show that will never disappoint you. Much like Dark -- for my money the best show on Netflix-- The Expanse is now fully complete and, unlike most sci-fi shows, defied the odds and finished well. Some of its six seasons are better than others, but The Expanse is incredibly consistent. You'll be shocked by how much ground it covers and how seamlessly it moves from one civilization-altering crisis to the next.

It's funny, but almost everyone I know who watches The Expanse, including myself, loves to complain about it. They'll complain about the clunky dialogue and the strange performances, but there's nothing else like it. It's a show that's stubbornly carried by its strengths, to levels of quality it has no right attaining. You owe it to yourself to watch, if only to create your own list of things in The Expanse that annoy you.

Just make sure that list includes Thomas Jane's hat. Unforgivable.

The CAPSTONE Mission Launches A New Era In The Colonization Of The Moon – Science 2.0

Posted: at 9:01 pm

Forbes reports that the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System Technology Operations and Navigation Experiment (CAPSTONE) will be launched from the RocketLabs Electron rocket and Photon spacecraft by June 27, from the LC-1 launch site in New Zealand. The NASA lunar orbiter will text and verify the Gateway space stations calculated orbital stability. The 12-unit CubeSat will also test a new navigation system by measuring its distance relative to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO).

The Gateway is a space station currently being developed through a collaboration of NASA, the European Space Agency (ESA), and the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). The Gateway will act as a solar-powered communications hub, laboratory, holding area for robots, and a short-term habitation module, once it is placed in lunar orbit. The Gateway will serve as part of NASAs Artemis program.

CAPSTONE will act as a pathfinder for the Near Rectilinear Halo Orbit (NHRO), which has been calculated to offer long-term stability coupled with low propellant requirements for station-keeping. The NHRO is the planned orbit for NASAs Artemis program. CAPSTONE will verify the simulations of NHROs intended orbit, and confirm the operational aspects of the Gateway. The CAPSTONE mission will validate the Power and Propulsion Elements navigation performance and station-keeping requirements. Given the nature of the mission, all involved will gain crucial experience for future missions under demanding orbital regimes.

CAPSTONE will become the first spacecraft in NHROs orbit. CAPSTONE will also test the Cislunar Autonomous Positioning System (CAPS), a new navigation system which will measure CAPSTONEs position relative to the LRO, without having to use ground stations.

CAPSTONE will be launched from the small-lift launch vehicle Electron. CAPSTONE will spend six days in a low-Earth orbit as it is propelled toward the Moon. CAPSTONE will spend three months on course toward the Moon, spending the following six months gathering data. CAPSTONE is set to arrive at its lunar orbit on November 13, assuming a launch date within the present period, which runs through July 27.

CAPSTONEs launch has suffered numerous delays. Initially, it was announced that CAPSTONE would be launched from Rocket Labs new launch site the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) on Wallops Island in Virginia. The MARS launch site, designated Rocket Lab Launch Complex 2, had been completed in 2019 and was slated to begin supporting launches in 2021, with the CAPSTONE launch date set for October 2021. However, delays in securing the necessary Autonomous Flight Termination System (AFTS) certification, caused the company to shift the launch site to the Mhia Peninsula. The launch date was then pushed back, and moved to the Mhia, LC-1 launch site in New Zealand. Rocket Lab will earn $9.95 from its launch contract.

CAPSTONE was developed and built through what has now become standard NASA practice: a partnership with private contractors. It was developed and built in partnership with a private contractor, Advanced Space, who were awarded a $13.7 million contract on 13 September 2019, through the Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. Advanced Space was responsible for overall project management as well as some of CAPSTONEs most important technologies, such as the CAPS. A company called Tyvak Nano-Satellite Systems developed and built the spacecraft bus, while Stellar Exploration developed the propulsion systems.

NASA has been working with private contractors because the era of big missions is over. The United States no longer has the appetite or ability to fund the kind of large-scale missions it used to. These partnerships are about finding ways to reduce the costs of missions and operate in a more hard-budget context.

CAPSTONE isnt just part of a new way of NASA doing things, it also represents a new era in exploration and development of the Moon. The 25 kilogram spacecraft has fairly modest aims, but the mission is very important nonetheless.

As traffic to the Moon increases, CAPSTONE is a test mission to see if traffic can be managed through such missions. Because the mission will fly on the NHRO orbit, it will also help NASA by bringing it closer to completing the Lunar Gateway project. The Gateway project will, as we have seen, act as a way station for astronauts going to the Moon. CAPSTONE will allow NASA to test the orbits parameters and verify its stability. In other words, this mission is about the future colonization of the Moon. If it succeeds, NASA will be able to manage traffic to the Moon and successfully send astronauts to its surface.

CAPSTONE could prove crucial in helping NASA to reduce the costs of exploration and developing the Moon. We have entered an era in which private actors are vital components of the colonization of space, and so, working with private contractors will play an important role.

The launch process begins at 6 am Eastern Daylight Time (EDT) on June 27. The launch could take place as late as July 27, to allow for adjustments due to weather changes or technical delays. Live coverage begins at 5 am EDT on NASA Television, the NASA app and the NASA website.

Mykhailo Federov wishes Elon Musk on his birthday, says ‘whole world has chance to live’ – Techstory

Mykhailo Federov wishes Elon Musk on his birthday this week, says whole world has chance to liveSource: The Telegraph UK

On Tuesday, June 28 the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Mykhailo Federov made a post on Twitter addressing Elon Musk. He took to the social media platform to wish the Tesla chief executive on his birthday this week. He thanked the billionaire CEO for the support he has shown to Ukraine all this while.

As he wished the billionaire, Federov noted it was owing to his birth that the entire world had a chance to survive. Referring to this as victory, he added that after it is accomplished, everyone would take part in the colonisation of Mars. In conclusion, the vice prime minister expressed how the all the citizens of Ukraine were immensely thankful for every form of support and help that the Tesla CEO has provided them with.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine which initiated on February 24, Ukraine has gone through a host of challenges. In fact, through the ones they are still struggling to overcome as each day goes by. Elon Musk has come across one of those few billionaire personalities from the United States that never hesitated to extend his help to the needs of the country at the time of the crisis.

As the war started off, Ukraine faced difficulties as they lost connection to the internet and struggled to stay connected. This was when Musks rocket maker SpaceX came forward to help the nation as the war continued. Within a day or two of a request made from Federov, SpaceX Starlink satellite internet dishes arrived for network aid at Ukraine. In fact, he even expressed his gratitude to the SpaceX CEO on Twitter at the arrival of the Starlink dishes.

Dear @elonmusk, happy birthday! Perhaps thanks to your birth, the whole world has a chance to survive. After our victory, we will join the colonization of Mars. The people of Ukraine are grateful for your support.

Mykhailo Fedorov (@FedorovMykhailo) June 28, 2022

Essentially, Starlinks presence in Ukraine has aided both the civilians and military in this time. It has contributed to thwarting Russias attempts to cut its neighbour from the rest of the world. This was as SpaceXs contribution to providing Kyiv with an essential victory against its aggressors in the past few months.

Various commanders have admired SpaceXs capabilities to deliver such a massive number of satellite stations in a matter of days. Especially, a nation in the middle of a war, trying to keep them online in spite of immensely advanced attacks by the hackers from Russia to weaken them.

From Autonomous Cities to US Presidency: The Future Is Now Film Shows What Blockchain Leaders Think About Governance – Geeks World Wide

Posted: June 24, 2022 at 10:23 pm

Originally posted here.By: NewsBTC

The first cinematographic NFT project The Future Is Now Film shows what blockchain leaders think of future governance systems: will there be even tighter centralization, a symbiosis of traditional and new methods of control or do we need a totally new governance system to replace the old one? Answers to these questions can be found in the two latest episodes, Transforming The Future and Aligning The Future, which were filmed at the AIBC Summit UAE 2021 in Dubai and Blockchance EU conference in Hamburg. Lets dive deeper and see what futurists think. Blockchain Is Getting Closer to Traditional Institutions Several years ago, it would have been a bombshell to see government officials at a blockchain conference. Now, in both the AIBC Summit in Dubai and Blockchance EU conference in Hamburg, government officials are among honorable guests for two reasons. First of all, the scale of the change made them notice the inevitable. Secondly, some of the decentralized futurists have joined the ranks of centralized organizations in hopes of making a difference. For example, H.E. Justin Sun, the founder of TRON, recently became an ambassador to the World Trade Organization on behalf of Grenada, a country in the Caribbean. In his view, cryptocurrency projects today are way more efficient than the financial infrastructure that we have today and now he plans to pave the way for mass adoption. According to Fabian Friedrich, the founder of Blockchance Group, one of the reasons for the Blockchance EU conference to exist is the need to bring together different market players especially the decision-makers who currently govern traditional systems to take the fear away and show them how positive this movement is, how many chances are in the movement for a better future. Some have already achieved tangible progress in establishing the dialogue. Fabian Vogelsteller, co-founder of ERC20 Protocol, shared that negotiations with regulators despite the back and forth nature of the process, have already brought positive results because everybody sees the benefits of this technology while of course the old has always had the interest to survive. Will Governments Have a Saying? According to His Excellency Justin Sun, decentralized currencies are more advanced not only on the technological side but also on the philosophical side as they drive the inclusion of smaller countries. That is why it will be only natural for countries to start to diversify the countries reserves also by building the central bank digital currencies but the philosophy behind CBDCs will determine their results: they could either join a competitive system or undermine the reputation and the influence in the market in the first place if they are made to be an appealing asset to use next to cryptocurrencies, for example by simply functioning as a financial tracking tool. Justin Sun believes that when the barriers of the traditional financial system go down, everyone benefits. But according to Brock Pierce, the 2020 US Presidential candidate from the Bitcoin Foundation, there will be beneficiaries and losers. In his view, Dubai, for example, will be the beneficiary of change because it is doing a good job recognizing the change and adapting to it but those who resist the change will suffer: Look at Florida and Miami, they are doing a good job They are the beneficiary of the change. That is what happens when you embrace the future. You get to be part of it. Resist it and it runs you over. The future is coming Prominent venture capitalist Tim Draper whose Dad fought in the Korean War has shared a vision of what resistance to change could look like by giving a historical example of North and South Korea as a full government control system versus a free and open society with democracy 70 years later: Average South Korean now makes 430 times what the average North Korean makes in a year, and that is when you adjust for purchasing power. And the average South Korean is 4 inches taller than an average North Korean. It is pretty clear to me which system works better Dubai: Safe Harbor for Innovations One of the biggest gatherings in the blockchain community held by Eman Pulis & SIGMA Group AIBC Summit UAE 2021 has been held in Dubai a few months prior to Blockchance EU. Dubai is among the first cities that are taking a tangible stand into abundance and allowing decentralization to flourish as it is stated by Miguel Francis-Santiago, the Founder of The Future is Now DAO and the mastermind behind #TheFutureisNowFilm, with initiatives like the UAE Crypto Map. Dubai is on its way to becoming self-sustainable by leveraging the power of innovative-based ecosystems. Under the leadership of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, with a plethora of initiatives headed by Dubai Blockchain Center and the work of its CEO Dr. Marwan Alzarouni, creating a safe harbor of innovation. And the safe harbor has already brought some fresh fruits. Matthias Mende has launched an innovative celebrity marketplace Bonuz Market just after a couple of years of residency in Dubai and now the project allows celebrities around the world to engage with fans within an NFT and Metaverse platform. Sergej Kunz with 1inch Network bridges the crypto world with traditional banking by working with such regulated institutions like Sygnum Bank. The 1inch Network solution became the deepest liquidity aggregator in the DeFi space: the platform reached over $120 billion in transaction volume since its inception by solving the problem of high entry point and barrier to use cryptocurrencies. Salim Ismail of OpenExO, former CEO of Singularity University, by creating pilots with such traditional businesses like Procter & Gamble, Gucci and KPMG, created a space where new transformational methods of running a company between exponential organization structure and traditional businesses can now pave the way for preserving synapses of the human brain. The US Presidency: to the Belly of the Beast According to Ilya Churakov of the decentralized ecosystem Global Digital Club, such bridges need to be built in the right way so big opportunities could scale fast and reach mass adoption. But to learn the right way we need to study the old one, believes Brock Pierce, the 2020 US Presidential candidate from the Bitcoin Foundation. He dedicated his utmost energy to running the US presidential campaign during the 2020 Year of COVID, in order to understand the mechanics of the political system better and get ready for the next stage in making actionable change: Why would I subject myself to such a thing [as a Presidential Campaign] if I was not committed to following all the way through Lets say it was an exploratory mission. To understand the mechanics of the system, you need to go inside the belly of the beast, to learn how to run a national campaign without any of the existing infrastructure without any of the funding mechanisms that allow politicians to run for office, without a political platform and to do it in the midst of COVID. My basic training is complete According to Crystal Rose Pierce of Sense.Chat, only by creating the bridge between traditional systems and the decentralized world can we explore how the interests of different people can be put together for mutually beneficial growth. For the Pierce couple, there is no goal to simply replace the old with the new, there has to be a dialogue. El Salvador: Dreamland for All Nations El Salvador has been creating this bridge perhaps like no one else in the current political system, while becoming the first country to make this brave step towards economic freedom. As a country, they seek to voice their opinion, and make their opinion visible despite the pandemic crisis that was happening in the world at the time and a very clear recommendation from the International Monetary Fund in November of 2021 not to adopt Bitcoin as a legal tender. Nevertheless, they are going forward with the Bitcoin infrastructure in the country as they are seeking economic freedom, the dream of all nations. William Soriano, a congressman from El Salvador and a prominent Bitcoin advocate, explained how Bitcoin can help other countries by sharing how his homeland plans to achieve the next level of prosperity. The first benefit is cutting the unnecessary costs: Civil war led to 3 million people leaving the country to the US. Those people send 7000 million dollars yearly of remittances. That makes them pay 400 million dollars in fees to companies such as Moneygram Ria etc. And this is just El Salvador, a small country The second step is financial inclusion. In just 3 months, financial inclusion reached 80% in El Salvador, rising from 1.2 million to 3.8 million people having access to a financial system. Finally, the country set up a plan to use natural resources like volcanoes and geothermal energy with the use of volcano bonds, a decentralized financial UBI-type instrument. According to an SDG advocate at the United Nations and the World Economic Forum, Marc Buckley, all countries should follow the example to stop recreating a cycle of insanity that leads to financial bubbles following a downturn, on constant repeat a model Marc believes the world has been viciously revolving around. His Excellency Justin Sun is confident that countries in the Caribbean region will certainly follow the El Salvador example. But we can hardly expect all governments to act and follow this example, so what are the alternatives? Dying Animal vs. Autonomous Private Cities Dr Wolfgang Pinegger, founder of GLBRAIN and CEO of GAMB, believes that centralization is everywhere: from social media to banking and governments, the only light at the end of the tunnel being cryptocurrencies which might be the only way to escape the centralization step by step with a proper use-case. That is why GAMB Power To The Merchants has developed a solution that solves a major issue in the crypto space high transaction fees for day-to-day operations. The company has presented a coin with zero transaction fees that will work also in countries where 1$ is a substantial sum for a crypto transaction. This will consequently bring cryptocurrencies closer to mass adoption, and therefore reduce the centralization. In Wolfgangs view the change might happen quite naturally with a mindshift that is already happening in the younger generation: But the young generation has already realized that they do not want to be part of this game (ed. centralization) and the young generation in itself will just change it. Many people from the centralized world will not even realize until it has happened Veronika Kuett, who works on autonomous systems with Tripolis Corp., thinks that centralized money is the most powerful tool that the government would not wish to lose, since it allows them to inflate and debase the money of everyone else. Governments might react with tightening centralization and they might even succeed in the short term. Of course, printing money helps governments pull resources together which means attracting people to set up control structures. But in the end, this animal has cancer and therefore it will die. That is why there is no need to waste energy on reforming central banking when we need to rethink governance to set up new systems instead: The strategy is to spend the least amount of energy focusing on old systems but rather build the future, educate people and make them join the new system One of the solutions according to Veronika is to have many thousands of smaller entities where we have bonded communities, where we know each other, we trust each other to get rid of this anonymity that we have as residents in a very large nation. The demand for autonomous private cities is already there with many innovative libertarian thinkers facing the limitations of governments ever-changing rules. Irina Litchfield of the Global Autonomous Network also shares an opinion that we need to create new models of living through autonomous lands, agrotech and regenerative farming, blockchain, new space and beyond. If Mars colonization would make us rethink governance, why should we not start now? Whats Next? What does the future hold? What sort of future can help humanity reach sustainable goals and how? Answers to these questions can be found in the two latest episodes, Transforming The Future and Aligning The Future, which were filmed at the AIBC Summit UAE 2021 in Dubai and Blockchance EU conference in Hamburg. Lets dive deeper and see what futurists think.

Blockchain Is Getting Closer to Traditional Institutions

Several years ago, it would have been a bombshell to see government officials at a blockchain conference. First of all, the scale of the change made them notice the inevitable. Of course, printing money helps governments pull resources together which means attracting people to set up control structures. But in the end, this animal has cancer and therefore it will die. That is why there is no need to waste energy on reforming central banking when we need to rethink governance to set up new systems instead:

The strategy is to spend the least amount of energy focusing on old systems but rather build the future, educate people and make them join the new system

One of the solutions according to Veronika is to have many thousands of smaller entities where we have bonded communities, where we know each other, we trust each other to get rid of this anonymity that we have as residents in a very large nation.

Elon Musk Plans To Launch Thousands of 394 Feet Tall Rockets To Mars – Wccftech

Posted: June 11, 2022 at 1:23 am

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket ties three posters together to lift heavier payloads than the Falcon 9. According to Musk, the company is planning several Falcon Heavy flights this year. Image: SpaceX

Space Exploration Technologies Corporation's (SpaceX) chief executive officer Mr. Elon Musk has shared his astonishing plans for launching rockets to Mars. Musk's company is currently developing its Starship next-generation launch vehicle platform in Boca Chica, Texas. Starship is designed to be the world's largest rocket when it becomes operational, and at its heart is SpaceX's foundational aim of making humanity an interplanetary species.

The executive shared a slide deck from a recent presentation that he gave at SpaceX and was forthcoming with more details about his plans for Mars colonization. While Starship is primarily designed to fly to Mars, the rocket will also replace SpaceX's Falcon lineup to conduct low Earth orbit (LEO) and other missions. Additionally, it is also part of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Artemis program which aims to establish a presence on the Moon.

Elon Musk Wins: Twitter Relents by Agreeing To Provide the Data on the Platforms Fake Accounts

The slide deck did not contain any major textual or verbal elements, and it was a combination of key talking points that were part of Musk's presentation. Still, it managed to provide us with a couple of important details that lie at the heart of Starship. Building the new rockets requires a significant capital investment, and to recover it, SpaceX will have to use the rockets for non-Martian purposes as well.

Starship, for instance, is an integral part of SpaceX's plans to build a 40,000 small satellite internet constellation as part of its Starlink internet service. Additionally, it will also provide NASA with a lunar lander, and become SpaceX's go-to vehicle to refuel other Starships in space and launch payloads that currently use the Falcon 9 rocket lineup.

The presentation shared information about the Starlink launches, through a render that displayed the upper stage of the rocket, also dubbed Starship, launching two satellites at a time in space.

Additionally, Musk also reiterated his rationale for developing a rocket that can eventually take humans to Mars. The executive and his company have often been criticized for these goals, with some critics believing that dedicating resources to solve problems on Earth is a better option.

The billionaire shared his reasoning and motivation by outlining that:

Texas Joins Elon Musks Crusade Against Twitter Bots by Launching an Investigation Against the Platform for Potentially Deceiving Texans

Making life multiplanetary expands the scope & scale of consciousness.

It also enables us to backup the biosphere, protecting all life as we know it from a calamity on Earth.

Humanity is lifes steward, as no other species can transport life to Mars. We cant let them down

He also explained how he plans to use Starship to achieve these goals. The rocket consists of two parts. Its lower or first stage is a 230 feet tall booster designed to operate with 33 Raptor 2 engines. On top of the booster is the Starship spacecraft, which stands at 164 feet tall, and put together, the Starship launch system stands at 394 feet.

In response to a question asking him what his "plan" is to achieve this, Musk's reply was rather simple yet outlined the unimaginable scale of operations the 50-year-old executive aims to undertake.

The plan, according to Musk, is simple. SpaceX will build and launch thousands of Starships to Mars in the modern-day equivalent of Noah's ark. In his words:

Build 1000+ Starships to transport life to Mars. Basically, (very) modern Noahs Arks.

7:36 AM Jun 5, 2022Twitter for iPhone

SpaceX is currently building prototypes of both the first-stage booster and the second-stage spacecraft in its Texas facilities. The company has already tested the upper stage, and it is currently waiting for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to finish an environmental review of the Texas site. This will allow rocket maker to then apply to the FAA for a launch license as part of a separate and highly crucial process.

5 Up-and-Coming DOGE Projects that Might be Worth Your Money – NewsBTC

Posted: at 5:04 am

In the 2021 bull run, cryptocurrencies that played on the dog theme dominated the market. It all started on April 2nd, when Elon Musk tweeted Dogecoin might be my fav cryptocurrency. Its pretty cool. In the weeks that followed, Dogecoin cryptocurrencys original meme skyrocketed from a meager $0.05 to a high of $0.75 on May 7th. That means a DOGE holder who had $100 of Dogecoin on April 2nd would have had $1500 less than a month later.

With the Tesla CEO incorporating DOGE into its accepted payments for merchandise sales and supercharging stations and suggesting that people who subscribe to Twitter Blue should be able to pay with Dogecoin, DOGE itself (approximately $0.08 at the time of writing) still has massive upside potential. But many feel as though theyve missed out on the assets heyday. Theyre looking for the next 10,000x that only comes from early adoption. These five dog-themed coins have the potential to do just that.

2021s epic bull run is over, but there will be another bull market, and people love their dogs. Dog-themed projects will continue to dominate the memecoin space for the foreseeable future. Will you 1,000x?

My idea for a new era: The town hall from TED2022 – TED Blog

Theres a special tradition on the final day of the annual TED conference: the town hall, an opening of the main stage to TED attendees to reflect on the weeks ideas and experiences, offer timely rebuttals and share their own wisdom.

Due to time constraints at TED2022: A New Era, the town hall did not happen live and in person, but eight brave attendees still prepared thoughtful responses to the years prompt: My idea for a new era . Read them below.

Heidi Stamer

Its time for equal and fair parental leave. If we want true gender equality, we have to address the child penalty that many women face in their careers, earning 20 percent less than their male peers. As Allyson Felix said, our system doesnt seem to account for the fact that 50 percent of the population has babies, and the other half helped make them. In Sweden, theyve found that women earn seven percent more for each month their partners take parental leave. Its time for paid parental leave for both women AND men. And a work culture that accounts for parenting as a normal fact of life. Lets fix this.

Phil Engelhorn

Imagine a dinner with Jennifer Heldmann and Manish Bhardwaj, because while colonizing Mars sounds inevitable, I wonder if missions to Mars could not only be driven by curiosity, but humility and braveness. Lets go there not with an empty land mindset, sending dump trucks and excavators, but a Hi Level Mindset where we build organic regenerative infrastructure and are light on the land, ensuring Mars potential inhabitants are stakeholders in missions there. Consider using the metaverse instead of the real universe as an inclusive and democratic testing ground to explore moral clarity. Invite TED Fellows Albert Cahn to explore privacy on Mars, Adjany Costa to advocate for the indigenous lands, Robert Katzschmann to ensure the technology youre bringing is organic to the environment, and so many more possibilities for planning a much more regenerative and just and fun world, from the ground up.

We have the capacity to think this way today, and to do it all in a four-day work week.

Nidhi Tewari

The human brain is wired for survival and connection, and this fact doesnt change when people are at work. After coping with more than two years of collective global trauma from the pandemic, more than ever, leaders need to be attuned to the mental health and well-being of their employees.

People are struggling emotionally in all life dimensions, including in their careers. The new era of work entails understanding the interpersonal neurobiology in the interactions between leaders and the people that they lead. Interpersonal neurobiology posits that our responses to one another shift moment to moment based on our internal experience and interpretation of interactions. Past experiences, such as trauma, subconsciously influence whether we feel safe or threatened. When the brain perceives a threat due to misattunement, or an incongruence between whats needed and whats provided, our ability to trust, problem solve, learn and focus are diminished. We shift from thriving to surviving.

The antidote to misattunement is repair and connection. We must become aware of our own past and how it shows up in the way we lead, how employees trauma and mental health influence their lives in and out of work, and how these experiences impact the dynamics between us. If we want to effectively lead, then we must first attune.

Aishatu Yusuf

The criminal justice problem requires more than a criminal justice solution. There is no new era without the clear understanding that criminal justice is a housing, race, gender, sexual orientation, climate, homelessness, economic, food justice, environment, education and mental health issue.

In the past, TED has elevated the issue of racialized mass incarceration, and this week it was briefly mentioned. However, TED has not curated broad, intentional talks or discussions on solutions, domestic or global. Too often platforms are provided to discuss the problems, but rarely the solutions. We must have robust, solution-oriented conversations that include ending sexual harm to incarcerated people, that include ensuring incarcerated people have access to healthy nutritious foods, that include real restorative justice practices, that include solutions for housing, and solving the homelessness crisis for system-impacted people, that include providing job skills and opportunities for sustainable career paths, and ensuring that upon reentry incarcerated people are provided safe, long-term housing and mental services so they can thrive and succeed.

TED can and should take the opportunity across all of its platforms to amplify solutions that break down silos and provide real change.

Martin Medicus

Im responding to the talks given by Katherine Mangu-Ward and Aaron Bastani in the capitalism session.

Just as the solutions to the energy and climate crises will not be solved by a single technology or policy, there is no one ideology of government or economics that can adequately address all the problems we have, in the timeline we need. Monikers like libertarian or communist help us distill and share our beliefs. But when we talk about real solutions and drastically changing systems, we have to let go of the notion that any one ideology (with all its logic and good intentions) will serve everyone, and all scenarios, to an acceptable degree.

How will free markets preserve natural resources? How do Universal Basic Services systems ensure robust innovation without market factors?

Regardless of the answers, I doubt each side will be satisfied with those of the other. The human solution, then, is to meet in the middle and forge the best path together.

Dont other thy neighbor, when we can make so much more together.

Nancy Laube

I am here to make a case for changing how we describe climate change, because words matter. Climate change is just too neutral a term for something horrific that is coming to our future. You cant tell if it is bad or good. In fact, you have to add extra words like catastrophic or say climate crisis (as some TED speakers have done) to convey the meaning. Its like me telling you that bad weather is on the way to your home. Wouldnt it be better to say that a tornado is headed in your direction?

I think TED speaker Jeanette Winterson said it best when she called it climate breakdown. Climate breakdown. That is something scary. Something we should be afraid of. No extra words necessary. So remove the term climate change from your brain, and insert climate breakdown in that slot. Lets call climate breakdown what it is.

Heather OShea

The simple answer is community I got here thanks to five speakers. With my hand over my heart, I say, Sweetie, you deserve love and happiness (thank you, Dan Harris). I decide to take action by prioritizing fun (thank you, Catherine Price). All humans enjoy fun, so it means every human can be part of my in group (thank you, David Eagleman). When you can find a way to relate to someone, you can connect with anyone (thank you, Platon). When you build connections, you can create community, which yields greater benefit to the whole and not just the one (thank you, Bill Gates).

Richard Lucas

With millions of refugees staying in private homes across Poland, including my house in Krakw, and humane policies across the whole of the EU, let the Ukraine crisis rekindle a moral awakening in refugee acceptance policies and a rejection of violence, tyranny and oppression.

Elon Musk Sounds Alarm Over ‘Population Collapse’ Again – Benzinga – Benzinga

Posted: at 5:04 am

Tesla Inc TSLA CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday warned of population collapse once again, an event that, he has said in the past, could potentially be the greatest risk to the future of civilization.

What Happened: 50-year-old Musk, who is raising seven children, said the U.S. birth rate has been below minimum sustainable levels for about five decades now.

The billionaire entrepreneur shared U.S. fertility rate data on Twitter that showed the fertility rate last year remained below the replacement level of 2.1. The data was compiled by the Wall Street Journal, citing the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The worlds richest person tweeted in the same thread to say that he is a rare person to be both rich and have many kids.

The Tesla and SpaceX CEO sought to dismiss the view that most people cannot afford to raise many children.Contrary to what many think, the richer someone is, the fewer kids they have.I am a rare exception. Most people I know have zero or one kid, Musk wrote in the same thread.

Why It Matters: Musk had last year said that population collapse is a much bigger problem than people realize.

Earlier this month, the billionaire raised his concern about the falling birth rate and rising death rate in Japan. Population in Japan had its largest drop on record, falling by 644,000 to just over 125.5 million in 2021. The drop was the biggest since comparable data became available in 1950.

Musk, who dreams of colonizing Mars and making life multi-planetary, has earlier said that people should focus on having more babies.

Price Action: Tesla closed 6.9% lower at $628.16 on Tuesday, according to data from Benzinga Pro.
