Artemis is a series of NASA-led missions aimed at carrying out 21st century lunar exploration. Elon Musk and tech-bro futurism – The Signal – The Signal

Technology has played a crucial role in the development of human society. Many of the wide-scale cultural and societal shifts that have taken place throughout history came from developing those new technologies.

The Industrial Revolution, which introduced several engine or motor-powered devices that significantly improved technological production, was the start of the celebrity inventor. Since then, the people credited with inventing new and essential technologies have become superstars.

In the early 20th century, people celebrated figures like Thomas Edison and Henry Ford for their intellect and creativity pushing the world forward. Though times have changed, society still loves these enigmatic inventor types.

Recently, tech industry giants like Bill Gates and Steve Jobs have quickly filled that role. Of this particular mold, however, the most recent and widely known incarnation is easily Elon Musk.

Musk is well known for being the CEO or founder of a few different companies, including The Boring Company, SpaceX and Tesla. Elon has differentiated himself from other billionaire types with his comparatively jovial attitude.

Unlike Warren Buffet, who plays to his professionalism and wisdom, Musks persona is more akin to a combination of Tony Stark and Alan Turing if they used Reddit.

While Musks name is synonymous with technological advancement, his utility to these projects is minimal.

As an example, he bought the right to be named founder of Tesla after purchasing the company. His inputs on his creations also range from short-sighted to downright unscientific.

One of Musks brain-rotting ideas for the future is the Hyperloop, a proposed public transit method in which a train would move throughout the country at airline speeds. Musk has previously criticized public transportation for not offering enough agency to the individual and its shared nature.

The most glaring design flaw of the concept is that shooting an object with people inside it through a high-velocity vacuum tube would most likely destroy the vehicle, killing everyone inside.

Even if Mr. Musks feelings about the death toll of his products were not already in question, several infrastructural issues would arise from the creation of this system.

Musk claims the project will cost a whopping $17 million. However, a feasibility analysis by the Department of Transportation suggests that it could cost ten times that.

There is, of course, the main issue of usability when it comes to The Hyperloop. The trains only serve around 23 passengers, making them more expensive than our current train technology.

Public transit efforts require the organizational structure of centralized public authority to build the groundwork for such improvements, as public transit projects are notoriously large and expensive.

It is telling that Musks ideas about public transit in a country where budgets for transportation are perpetually bleeding and ignore urban areas cater to the rich. If Musk truly cared about the necessity for more transit options, he would invest in proven solutions.

When considering Musks visions, it is vital to understand the power and influence of being a billionaire and a significant player in the technologies industry. This influence is evident in the fact that the price of Dogecoin is, at times, dictated by when he talks about his support of a coup in Bolivia for lithium extraction.

Besides The Hyperloop, Elon Musks other wide-sweeping plan for humanity is the continued exploration of space and the colonization of Mars. Musk and other advocates for Mars colonization reason that we need to find somewhere else to live due to the catastrophic effects of climate change that have and will continue to happen.

This line of thinking seems to be the most doomed manifestation of climate grief, which legitimately posits that as a species, we cannot and should not try to improve conditions on the planet we already inhabit.

The reality of the situation is, the colonization of Mars will inevitably be very difficult. It will take a long time, it will be expensive, and it will be dangerous.

Seven billion people cannot afford to wait decades and have to pay to go to a planet alien to us and utterly unsuitable for survival. Musk is most likely aware of the criticisms people have levied at his ideas and character and does not care.

I doubt the idiocy of his ideas is lost on him and might even go so far as to say it is intentional. Creating an entirely new public transit method is so obviously superfluous, and Elons hangups with current public transit methods are either so shallow they arent worth addressing or, like most public services in the US, arent worth addressing not being funded enough.

It is entirely possible that Musks project is intentionally inaccessible and unprofitable, as it would mainly serve as a fun toy for other wealthy elites to try out, safe from any unwashed masses they may have to encounter. This idea goes double for his Mars mission plans.

Most working people can barely afford a plane ticket to go to another part of our planet. It is unlikely that those same people will have the money for a visa to Mars!

Mars colonies will, without a doubt, be a haven for the rich as they continue to worsen our current climate conditions because they can afford a safer option.

They will, of course, not experimentally see the place for themselves as that would be dangerous (we can, however, accurately predict the socioeconomic status of the people who will be doing so).

In Elons world, the rest of us will stay here on Earth and die with it. Individualized solutions for select people cannot be what saves our species.

If we hope to end our struggles with our climate, it will require a massive reconfiguration of our lives and production. Our current capitalist modes of production are unsustainable, and we cannot take pointers from one of the men who perpetuate it.

Elon Musk is a billionaire who laments the life of privilege he inherited through Zambian emerald mine earnings. He is simply too disconnected from the general populace on a material level to have a coherent solution to the problems that affect us possibly.

Latinx Files: RGV’s fight over another kind of border wall – Los Angeles Times

In last weeks newsletter, I wrote about how murals can be an opportunity to tell stories about a community.

Of course, it also matters who is doing the telling and what it is theyre saying.

In early September, the border city of Brownsville (Puro 956, cuh!) announced a plan to revitalize the downtown business district through a series of commissioned murals, all part of an effort to recover spaces for artistic expansion in the center of the city, according to a news release. The first of these works of public art would be painted on the side of the historic Capitol Theatre by Los Angeles-based artist Teddy Kelly.

I would venture to say its going to be one of the largest murals in the [Rio Grande Valley], if not the biggest, Ramiro Gonzalez, Brownsvilles then-director of community and government affairs (he is no longer employed by the city) told Valley Central News at the time.

It may be the largest mural in the RGV, but to some Brownsville residents it feels like a mischaracterization of their hometown.

If youre not from here and you go see it, youre going to think that it represents Brownsville and youll be mistaken in what the culture is here, said Gabriel Trevio, a local artist with more than 20 years of experience.

Were sending the wrong message, and its creating the wrong image that has nothing to do with the local culture.

Trevio isnt wrong. Kellys 6,000-square-foot mural is replete with geometric shapes and pastel colors. Its the perfect background for Instagram selfies, sure, but the only sign that youre in Brownsville is the block letters BTX, shorthand for Brownsville, Texas, no doubt an aspirational nod to ATX, or Austin.

Some took umbrage with the selection of a California artist instead of someone local. The mural revitalization project was funded by the Musk Foundation, tech billionaire Elon Musks charity organization. For his work, Kelly was paid $20,000, more than half of Brownsvilles 2019 median household income of $38,588.

That money was supposed to benefit our community, said Melissa Mendoza, another local artist and vocal critic of the mural project. How is it benefiting us if that money gets on a plane and heads back to California to stimulate their local economy?

Im sure local artists would have been able to use that money; they would have been able to use that money to go to [Mayor Juan Trey Mendezs] pizza place downtown. Hes always telling us to keep everything local, to support local businesses, but then they themselves dont even support the local artists. Its sad.

Mendoza wasnt always a critic of Mendez, saying she campaigned for him because she saw a young, motivated, handsome Chicano lawyer whose job it was to stand up to the powerful people.

Now, she feels the mural is a slap in the face. It also feels like a sign of whats to come.

The SpaceX launch site in Boca Chica Beach is about 25 miles northeast of the Capitol Theatre mural. Dubbed Starbase, Texas by Musk, the location appears to play a central role in the billionaires quest to colonize Mars.

Which brings us back to the mural project. Yes, downtown Brownsville is in the midst of a revitalization, but whom is it for?

What is happening in Brownsville is exactly what has happened in larger municipalities 10 years ago, which is that art is being instrumentalized as a way to create capital incentives, said ChristinaMaria Xochitlzihuatl Patio Houle, co-founder of the south Texas arts collective Las Imaginistas, noting the longtime relationship that exists between capital and art, citing the patronage of Renaissance artists by the rich and powerful.

Its instrumentalized beautification for the sake of mobilizing gentrification.

For his part, Mayor Mendez has defended the mural, acknowledging in an Instagram post that not everyone would like it.

Felipe Romero, communications and marketing director for the city, also sent the following statement to The Times:

The city continues to support Brownsvilles dynamic art and culture scene, with projects like the Brownsville Mural Program, Calle Calaveras, and Lazos de mi Ciudad. The Brownsville Mural Program has grown to be a collaborative effort to blend diverse talents from around the world. With several art projects on the horizon, the city is staying committed to providing opportunities for artists through community engagement.

On Tuesday, local blog El Rrun Rrun reported that the second mural for the revitalization project was nearly completed, this time created by Mexican artist Sofia Castaneda.

The Times reached out to the Musk Foundation via telephone and email but has not received a response.

Today is Latina Equal Pay Day, the date that signifies how much longer Latinas have to work to catch up to the 2020 wages of their white, non-Latinx male counterparts.

The wage gap is larger for Latinas they earn 57 cents for every dollar a white, non-Latinx man makes than it is for women belonging to other racial and/or ethnic groups. According to Equal Pay Today, Asian American and Pacific Islander women earn 80 cents on the dollar, Black women earn 63 cents on the dollar, and Native women earn 60 cents on the dollar.

But wait, it gets worse. According to a 2020 report from the National Womens Law Center, the wage gap will cost Latinas more than $1 million over the course of a 40-year career.

The pay gap impacts our ability to have what we need to live our lives with security, Mnica Ramrez, co-founder of organizations Alianza Nacional de Campesinas and the Latinx House, wrote in an op-ed published in Latina.

It impacts our ability to pay for our children to go to college, to save for the future, and to have confidence that we will have the financial footing to retire one day.

These daunting figures have real-life consequences, and if the claim is that the future is Latina which I believe in then closing the wage gap is imperative if we want it to be less dystopian.

How do we fix this? I dont know, but I am a big supporter of salary transparency.

From a workers perspective, without accurate information about peer compensation, they may not know when theyre being underpaid, UCLA economist Emiliano Huet-Vaughn told the New York Times in 2019, noting that it naturally becomes harder to make the case that one is suffering a form of pay discrimination if you dont know what your co-workers are earning.

The Key to Mars Colonization May (Literally) Lie in Human Blood, Sweat, and Tears, New Study Suggests – Yahoo News

Colonization of the Red Planet may seem like the plot of a classic sci-fi page turner, but, as of late, NASA has made significant headway into creating a livable, sustainable, human-ready environment on Mars.

In April, NASAs Perseverance robot was able to convert some of the planets atmosphere into oxygen no easy feat, seeing as the planets atmosphere is ultra-thin and mainly made of carbon dioxide. Scientists believe that this significant accomplishment could pave the way for future successes in both isolating and storing oxygen there, marking a huge step for mankind and its ultimate goal of colonizing Mars.

One of the greatest obstacles to creating livable colonies on the Red Planet boils down to one word: resources. The cost of shipping quantities of necessary resources, including oxygen, would be astronomical (pun fully intended), so scientists have instead been working on ways to develop those resources on the planet itself, or at least find ways to create more sustainable technology that would minimize the amount of supplies needed from Earth.

This is where our precious bodily fluids come in.

A recent study published in Materials Today Bio discusses the possibility that the answer to sustainable resources for Mars colonization efforts could lie within the astronauts themselves, namely in their blood, sweat, tears, urine, and feces.

Though this may sound grim (and potentially like another sci-fi storyline), the study suggests that these organic materials could be utilized as a way to supplement raw materials already found on Mars, potentially saving time, money, and other valuable resources necessary for interplanetary supply runs from Earth.

According to Aled D. Roberts, a research scientist at the University of Manchester, and leader of the new study, there is one significant, but chronically overlooked, source of natural resources that will by definition also be available on any crewed mission to Mars: the crew themselves.

So how, exactly, would this technology work? As part of the new research, the study suggests that human blood could, in part, be used to form a material similar to concrete when combined with Martian dust. Furthermore, adding urea (which is found in human fluids like sweat, tears, and urine), would increase the strength and durability of this astro-crete by up to 300 percent. The potential to create and 3D print this concrete-like material could be an important step in astronauts ongoing quest to build on Mars.

The study also suggests that other human bi-products like dead skin, hair, nails, mucus, and feces could potentially be combined with already existing Martian materials and be exploited for their material properties on early extraterrestrial colonies.

The study is an important (if unglamorous) step toward solving one of the most critical obstacles to creating Martian colonies. Now that researchers have identified the potential of harvesting bodily fluids from humans, more studies will likely be on the horizon to develop further materials similar to astro-crete that could be used to build on Mars. And who knows? One day we could all be sitting in our oxygen-rich Martian apartments built from donations of astronaut sweat, blood, and feces a literal Martian wonderland created from humanitys greatest resource: ourselves.

We have all, I think, wanted to be astronauts at some point in our lives. The possibility of space exploration and traversing the final frontier of space has captured the imaginations of countless people.

Multiple private companies are now sending amateur astronauts, even civilians, into orbit. Suddenly, the possibility of traveling to outer space seems a bit more reachable. Even if you cant see yourself ever actually setting off in a rocket ship, you can get a taste of what its like by exploring the multiple books written by astronauts and scientists about space. Your Abilene Public Library has the following books (and more) available to borrow.

Get a solid foundation of the science that led to space exploration from space historian Roger D. Launius, in his book The Smithsonian History of Space Exploration: from the Ancient World to the Extraterrestrial Future. In this book, Launius covers the thousands of years of development that led to humanitys ability to venture into space. He also speculates about the future of space exploration and possible colonization of other planets.

Retired astronaut Clayton C. Anderson, also known as Astro Clay, spent over 150 days aboard the International Space Station. He provides a firsthand perspective on life as an astronaut and uses humor and wit to answer questions in his book, Its a Question of Space: An Ordinary Astronauts Answers to Sometimes Extraordinary Questions. Anderson writes about everything from living on the International Space Station to how to become an astronaut.

Looking to the future, physics professor Michio Kaku explores the possibilities of building sustainable colonies on Mars, achieving interstellar travel, and even human immortality in his book The Future of Humanity: Terraforming Mars, Interstellar Travel, Immortality, and Our Destiny Beyond Earth. Beginning with a prologue that outlines the multiple past catastrophes that nearly led to the extinction of humanity, Kaku lays the foundation for why humanity must reach for the stars if we wish to survive as a species long term.

If you prefer to explore space travel through fiction, you have multiple options available. Andy Weir, author of New York Times bestselling novel The Martian, brings us a new novel, Project Hail Mary, starring an amnesiac astronaut who is Earths only hope of survival. He wakes up on a ship hurtling through space with no memory of who he is and must piece together his mission from observation.

Mary Robinette Kowal gives us an intriguing look at what might-have-been in her alternate history novel The Calculating Stars. After a meteorite strike devastates the world in the 1950s, humanitys only option is to race to space in an effort to save at least a portion of humanity.
