In An Anxious 2020, Exercise Might Be The Answer – Longevity LIVE – Longevity LIVE
Posted: November 29, 2020 at 5:50 am
Anxiety is the human reaction to stress and its no secret that 2020 has been somewhat of a stressful year. All of us have been thrown for a loop this year and have had to come to terms with the new normal. A large part of this new normal is mask-wearing. It seems that whether we like it or not, mask-wearing and social distancing is here to stay (at least for a while).
Masks can be problematic, not only do they cause a wide range of skin conditions (maskne) but they can also, unfortunately, be the cause of panic attacks. For the average person, wearing a face-covering might not be comfortable but its also unlikely to feel like a big deal. According to Mind, If however, you struggle with anxiety, wearing a mask that covers both your mouth and nose can affect the air you breathe and leave you feeling panicked and anxious. This can leave you feeling dizzy, nauseous, and disoriented and can lead to feelings of dread in situations when you have to wear your mask. For the anxious mind, a mask is also a visual signifier of the virus itself which can trigger a fight or flight response.
So in an anxious year, what can you do to help your mental health and relieve some anxiety? Unsurprisingly, the answer comes in the form of exercise. And this exercise really doesnt have to be complicated. Its most important to get your body moving and as little as 10 minutes a day can really help to relieve stress and elevate your mood. Katharina Star Ph.D., says that often the psychological benefits of exercise are overlooked. The CDC recommends exercise as a way of dealing with the pandemic. Star remarks that people perceive exercise as being good for the body but not necessarily for the mind. But exercise is vital when it comes to your mental health and wellness.
According to VeryWellMind, many mental health professionals prescribe exercise as a treatment for a wide variety of mental health issues including depression and anxiety. Exercise can relieve symptoms of depression such as fatigue, tension, anger, and reduced vigor.. For PTSD, panic disorder, and other anxiety disorders, exercise can release pent-up tension and reduce feelings of fear and worry. It can even decrease the intensity and frequency of panic attacks.
Essentially, exercise decreases the stress hormones like cortisol and releases the feel-good endorphins, which instantly makes you feel better and relieve stress. Exercise and physical activity can also be used as a distraction from negative thoughts and feelings. Essentially, it allows the mind to think only of physical endurance. This means that other problems and negative thoughts fade while the body focuses on physical exertion. Improving your wellbeing overall can also boost immunity, which is a good thing when Covid-19 is around. Therapist Sally R Connollyreminds us that exercise doesnt cure anxiety or depression, it simply aids in relieving the symptoms. If you are struggling with severe depression or anxiety, please see a doctor.
Any kind of aerobic exercise will help. This includes things like running, jogging, swimming, and dancing. The most important thing, therapist Sally R Connolly remarks, is to get your heart rate up. Also on the recommended list, even though they arent aerobic exercise is yoga. The reason yoga works are that it combines physical movement with meditation and deep breathing which can calm the mind and alleviate worry. Weight training, although great for the body, doesnt seem to offer as much relief from the symptoms of anxiety.
The takeaway here is that exercise is important for both the mind and body. It doesnt really matter how much exercise you do, even just getting outside for a brisk morning walk will help as long as it raises your heart rate. Weve all been stuck inside for a large portion of this year. So the best option is to get outside, take your dog for a walk, or go for a jog. Even dancing in your living room to your favorite music will help. Whatever you do, make sure it makes you feel good!

Another Win for Senolytics: Fighting Aging at the Cellular Level Just Got Easier – Singularity Hub
Posted: at 5:50 am
Longevity research always reminds me of the parable of blind men and an elephant. A group of blind men, whove never seen an elephant before, each touches a different part of the elephants body to conceptualize what the animal is like. Because of their limited experience, each person has widely different ideasand they all believe theyre right.
Aging, thanks to its complexity, is the biomedical equivalent of the elephant. For decades, researchers have focused on one or another hallmark of aging, with admirable success. For example, we now know that energy production in aging cells goes haywire. Immune responses ramp up, stewing aging tissue in a soup of inflammatory molecules. Dying cells turn into zombie-like senescent cells, where they abdicate their normal functions and instead pump out chemicals that further contribute to inflammation and damage.
Yet how these hallmarks fit together into a whole picture remained a mystery. Now, thanks to a new study published in Nature Metabolism, were finally starting to connect the dots. In mice, the study linked up three promising anti-aging pathwaysbattling senescent cells, inflammation, and wonky energy production in cellsinto a cohesive detective story that points to a master culprit that drives aging.
Spoiler: senolytics, the drug that wipes out senescent cells and a darling candidate for prolonging healthspan, may also have powers to rescue energy production in cells.
Lets meet the players.
Individual cells are like tiny cities with their own power plants to keep them running. One celebrity molecular worker in the process of generating energy is nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD). Its got a long name, but an even longer history and massive fame.
Discovered in 1906, NAD is a molecule thats critical for helping the cells energy factory, the mitochondria, churn out energy. NAD is a finicky worker that appears on demandthe cell will make more if it needs more; otherwise, extra molecules are destroyed (harsh, I know). As we age, our cells start losing NAD. Without the critical worker, the mitochondria factory goes out of whack, which in turn knocks the cells normal metabolism into dysfunction.
At least, thats the story in mice. Although yet unproven for slowing aging or age-related disorders in humans, NAD boosters are already making a splash in the supplement world, raising even more need to understand how and why NAD levels drop as we age.
Giving NAD a run for its anti-aging fame are senolytics, a group of chemicals that destroy senescent zombie cells. These frail, beat-up cells are oddities: rather than dying from DNA damage, they turn to the dark side, staying alive but leaking an inflammatory cesspool of molecules called SASP (senescence associated secretory phenotype) that spread harm to their neighbors.
A previous study in ancient mice, the equivalent of a 90-year-old human, found that wiping out these zombie cells with two simple drugs increased their lifespan by nearly 40 percent. Others using a genetic kill switch in mice found that destroying just half of zombie cells helped the mice live 20 percent longer, while having healthier kidneys, stronger hearts, luscious fur, and perkier energy levels. Similar to NAD supplements, pharmaceutical companies are investigating over a dozen potential senolytics in a race to bring one to market.
But what if we can combine the two?
The new study, led by aging detectives Drs. Judith Campisi and Eric Verdin at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging in Novato, California, asked if we can connect the line between NAD and zombie cells, like suspects on an evidence board.
Their lightbulb clue was a third molecule of interest, highlighted in a 2016 study. Meet CD38, a molecule that plays double roles as an aging culprit. It wreaks havoc as an immune molecule to boost inflammation, while chewing up and destroying NAD. If CD38 is a new drug flooding the streets, then the teams goal is to hunt down where it came from.
Using tissue from both mice and humans, the team traced CD38 to a type of immune cells. These cells, called M1 macrophages (literally, big eaters) are well known to increase inflammation in the body and cause DNA damage with age. When comparing fat tissue isolated from young and old mice, the team realized that these over-hyper immune cells pump out CD38 like crazy as the cells agewhich, in turn, breaks down the good-for-you molecule, NAD.
One mystery in aging, explained Verdin, is whether NAD levels drop because of a faucet problemour ability to make NADor leaky sink problem, where aging cells break down NAD too fast. Our data suggests that, at least in some cases, the issue stems from the leaky sink, he said.
Heres the evidence so far: aging triggers a type of immune cells to pump out CD38, a nasty chemical from immune cells that eats up NAD. But why? More importantly, how can we stop it?
In an unexpected twist of events, the connection seemed to be zombie cells.
Remember, zombie cells leave a chemical evidence trace of inflammatory chemicals called SASP. They also change their molecular look so its possible to tease them out from a sea of healthy cells (think zombies versus humans in any zombie movie). In fatty tissue from aged mice, the team identified zombie cells and found that their toxic waste massively increased the amount of CD38 floating around. Going back to the drug analogy, if CD38 is a drug, then the specific immune cells are the manufacturers pumping it out to eat up NAD and wreck the cells energy production. Here, zombie cells are the drug kingpin, and their SASP molecules direct immune cells to make more CD38.
If zombie cells are the kingpin, then getting rid of them should reduce the inflammatory CD38 drug, and in turn, preserve good guy NAD. To test it out, the team used a genetically engineered mouse, which allows scientists to identify zombie cells and selectively kill them off.
The team injected the mice with a drug that damaged their DNA. This mimics aging, in the sense that it increased zombie cells and CD38. Killing zombie cells lowered CD38 levelslike clearing a drug off the streetsand preserved NAD.
Voilcase solved!
We are very excited to link two phenomena which have been separately associated with aging and age-related disease, said Verdin.
For now, zombie cells seem to be a master-level culprit that drives inflammation, decreases NAD levels, and breaks the cells energy production. This suggests that senolytics, which selectively kills off zombie cells, could as a secondary effect also increase NADsomething we didnt know previously.
To Verdin, however, that doesnt mean NAD supplements are useless or that senolytics are the one-and-only silver bullet against aging. Ultimately I think supplementation will be part of the equation, but filling the sink without dealing with the leak will be insufficient to address the problem, he said. In other words, for NAD supplementation to better work, we may need to also use senolytics to decrease zombie cells and CD38 levels, thus plugging the leak.
If all this makes your head spinyup, same here! Our bodies run multiple aging programs, and weve just begun linking all these disparate culprits together. But the rewards could be great for creating therapies that slow or even reverse aging. After all, if we can find several masters that drive aging, why go after the little guys when you can target the boss?

Mybiopassport Launches The COVID-19 & Immunity Profile At-home Blood Collection Test – Business Wire
Posted: at 5:50 am
GENEVA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--A Swiss biotechnology company with their Swissmedic authorized laboratory based in Geneva, announced today the launch of its e-Commerce platform http://www.mybiopassport.com, where anyone can order the COVID-19 & Immunity Profile test, and soon-to-be-released Nutritional Profile and Sports Performance Profile tests. The platform also comprises a user portal where clients can retrieve their results.
Mybiopassport is a unique technology in the personalized analysis of biological data on three main axes:
Currently, there is little to do to prevent or limit the impact of coronavirus infections other than hand washing, social distancing and wearing masks.
However, there are actions that can be implemented as a preventative measure, not only for the current pandemic, but for future seasonal outbreaks as well.
The mybiopassport COVID-19 & Immunity Profile lets clients know if they were previously infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus through the development of specific antibodies.
More importantly, this blood test also delivers actionable nutritional recommendations based on a set of key biomarkers of the immune system.
Over 40 observational and interventional studies have already shown the negative influence of a lack of vitamin D on the development of COVID-19. Other recent scientific reports and publications have highlighted the role of nutrition, optimal micronutrient status and a well-functioning immune system as a modifiable factor in reducing the risk of viral infections and their severity. These publications highlight the key role of a good nutritional status for a well-functioning immune system.
Mybiopassport proposes an at-home blood collection test to help the general public prepare for viral attacks (COVID-19 & Immunity Profile), combining the measurement of 5 key micronutrients (vitamin D, zinc, magnesium, copper, selenium) linked to the strengthening of the immune system, and an immunoassay which can detect IgG antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 virus in human blood.
Individuals can now collect only a few drops of blood at their homes and send their samples by regular prepaid mail to the companys authorized laboratory located in Geneva, Switzerland, to determine the existence of anti-SARS-COV-2 IgG antibodies and the levels of key biomarkers known to support the immune system against the effects of a next potential viral infection.
The COVID-19 & Immunity test can be ordered at http://www.mybiopassport.com and personalized results are delivered to each individual on the online portal.
About the company:As a background, BioKaizen, founded in Switzerland and born from developers of the athlete biological passport to detect drug use for the World Anti-Doping Agency and the International Olympic Committee, has developed a mass spectrometry technology platform to identify a persons nutritional profile using dried blood. Since 2018, first as CoreMedica Europe, and recently after its acquisition by Swiss Medical Group Holding Luxembourg, the company expanded its offering globally to include personalized nutrition and sport performance information that empowers customers with information to help actively manage their health.

Despite COVID, still best time ever to be alive – Bainbridge Island Review
Posted: at 5:50 am
As challenging as 2020 has been, we still should be thankful that it has been the best year in human history to be alive.
Consider: In 1920, according to the book Enlightenment Now, the average person spent 11.5 hours each week doing laundry. By 2014, he or she was completing laundry in less than an hour and a half. Or, in my case, five minutes which is how long it takes me to drop off my laundry at the laundry-cleaning shop.
Right now, humans are living longer, more- productive lives than ever before.
For 99.9 percent of our species existence, a newborn baby could expect to live on average to about the age of 30, reports Tom Chivers for BuzzFeed. According to the Encyclopaedia Britannica, that age dropped even lower in classical times, to perhaps 28 for ancient Greece and Rome. And as late as the start of the 20th century, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), it was still just 31.
But today, Chivers says, the global average life expectancy is 71.5 years, according to a study in The Lancet. And life expectancy will keep increasing. According to the World Future Society, we are in the early phases of a super longevity revolution. Thanks to advances in nanotechnology and cell and gene manipulation, scientists may eventually learn how to keep humans alive for 120 to 500 years.
I hope I dont live that long, though. I have zero desire to participate in one more presidential election, let alone several dozen.
COVID-19 has disrupted global markets, but the fact is that free markets and capitalism have been leading millions of people out of poverty and will continue to do so as the world eventually returns to normal. As poverty decreases, the global population enjoys a continually improving quality of life.
In 2017, Bill Gates reported global improvement across several indicators: Childhood deaths fell from 12 million in 1990 to 5 million in 2017. More than 90 percent of children were attending primary school. The proportion of people living in extreme poverty declined from one-third in 1990 to one-tenth 27 years later.
Today, the average American family is living better than the worlds wealthiest lived just 100 years ago. Cafe Hayek says the lifestyle of todays typical middle-class American is better than billionaire John D. Rockefellers 100 years ago. As rich as Rockefeller was, he didnt have air conditioning, sophisticated medicine, safe and fast travel, limitless dining and entertainment options, and many other wonderful things that we have. Of course, Rockefeller didnt have social media or talking heads on 24/7 cable news, so his lifestyle was not without its benefits.
This year has been no picnic. Many people are without work and are suffering as they face an uncertain future. We have our problems, to be sure and have plenty of work ahead of us. Then again, technological innovation is in the process of unleashing marvels and, hopefully, much-needed economic growth that will benefit us all.
This Thanksgiving, in addition to toasting the good health of my family and friends, Ill toast the many blessings and opportunities that abound but are harder to see during this most peculiar year.

How Balkan botanists saved a threatened oak and are planting thousands more – BirdLife International
Posted: at 5:50 am
The proverb from tiny acorns mighty oaks grow is often used in reference to the ambition of Henry Ford, whose car manufacturing empire of hundreds of factories and hundreds of thousands of employees started from a single humble beginning. Its now with a great irony that young ecologists from the Balkans have taken inspiration from the same phrase in their ambition to save a Critically Endangered subspecies of oak tree: not only have they collected over 20,000 acorns and aim to plant them into forests, but they also successfully campaigned to protect a single monumental tree resulting in a new road being diverted.
In Montenegro, Skadar Pedunculate Oak trees Quercus robur ssp scutariensis stand as lone individuals or small remnant patches of what once were vast old-growth oak forests that were an integral part of Skadar Lakes floodplain zones and surrounding river systems. These endemic oak forests also became some of the first human settlements as oak was a great source of heating and building material. Then came agriculture and urbanisation and the rest is history.
Today, the remaining oaks, which are easily recognisable by the long 3 cm stalks on their acorns, have monumental value both ecologically, e.g. as homes for hundreds of species, and culturally, as places for family and friends to gather under and tell old stories, or for the healing properties of their bark. And if you were compelled to reduce such an amazing being to just its monetary value, studies show that one of these oaks in your garden accumulates 1.7 tons of CO2 per year, binds 1.36 kg of air polluting particles and saves 1.460 kWh energy.
Enter early-career botany experts from Crnogorsko Drutvo Ekologa, the Montenegrin Ecologists Society (MES), who recognised this trees uncertain future and were granted by the Critical Ecosystem Partnership Fund* to inventory and restore them. Part of a new generation of plant conservationists in the region, theyve managed to collect an incredible 20,000 acorns this season, which they estimate will be enough to produce at least 10,000 seedlings. Thanks to great engagement with local landowners and volunteers, MES located many remarkable individuals as well as key forest patches in four Key Biodiversity Areas: Skadar Lake, Buljaric, Delta Bojana, and Zeta River (where the tree is a symbol for the recently declared Zeta River Nature Park).
One consequence was the discovery that one old oak was about to be felled for a new road construction. MES acted fast, raising awareness in the local media, and saved the tree. Pedunculate oaks in the region have long been a respected symbol of strength, power, longevity, spiritual and material wealth. Now, as cars pass by, this tree stands as a lone, brave symbol against many external pressures on Montenegros environment. It did not produce acorns this year, but acorns were collected from specimens just a couple of kilometres away, showing that the area was once a connected forest community.
Next year MES begin planting bolstering existing forests, planting in schoolyards, restoring private land where once old forests existed, and have high hopes of planting on agricultural land too. Local people exposed to MES awareness work are already interested in planting oaks in their gardens. So when starting out with saving a species, remember that with the right ambition, one oak can be enough to plant over 100 hectares of forest and divert a road. One wonders what Henry Ford would have thought about that

How Phase 4 Can Set Up Namor In The MCU (Before Black Panther 2) – Screen Rant
Posted: at 5:49 am
It's been long rumored that Namor the Sub-Mariner might be a villain in Black Panther 2, but there's a chance he could show up even before then.
Rumors have persisted since the release of the first film that Namor the Sub-Mariner could show up in Black Panther 2, and if that were the case, Phase 4 of the MCU has the perfect opportunity to set up his character. A fascinating character in the comics, Namor is technically one of the first mutants to ever appear, and it seems likely he'll achieve the same in the movies. His fierce attitude and stern demeanor makes him both a worthy ruler to the underwater kingdom of Atlantis but also a very difficult character to get along with, as he's caused a fair share of conflicts between his fellow heroes as well as the surface world at large.
One of Namor's most notorious rivalries in the comics is with another king: T'Challa of Wakanda. For years they'd served alongside each other as members of the Avengers, but during the events of Avengers vs X-Men, Namor (who had been imbued with the powers of the Phoenix Force), attempted to destroy the nation of Wakanda. This resulted in a near-cold war between the two characters that consisted of repeated attacks against each other's nation, finally culminating in Queen Shuri ordering a vicious attack on the nation of Atlantis that left it in disrepair. Their distaste for each other has only continued to grow in recent years, and is a division of heroes that both Marvel and fans find unique.

Because of their history, fans of the MCU have speculated and hoped that Namor might show up in Black Panther 2 as either an anti-hero or a straight villain. While Namor and T'Challa's relationship to power and kingship would be an interesting foil for each other, there's a huge chance that Namor could actually make his first appearance or be referenced much earlier in the MCU. Because of the time-hopping narrative of Phase 4, Namor may make his debut in Eternals.
A major plot point in the movie and the characters, in general, is that the Eternals are immortal; an evolutionary offshoot created by the Celestials in order to defend Earth against their evil counterparts, the Deviants. Because of their longevity, the Eternals have interacted with members of Marvel's ancient God pantheon and even interacted with the ancient Greeks on behalf of gods like Zeus and Athena. Essentially, they've been witness to nearly all of human history, making them historians and living libraries of ancient human knowledge as well as superheroes.

ABSTRACT
Epidemiological studies of human longevity found two interesting features, robust advantage of female lifespan and consistent reduction of lifespan variation. To help understand the genetic aspects of these phenomena, the current study examined sex differences and variation of longevity using previously published mouse data sets including data on lifespan, age of puberty, and circulating insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF1) levels in 31 inbred strains, data from colonies of nuclear-receptor-interacting protein 1 (Nrip1) knockout mice, and a congenic strain, B6.C3H-Igf1. Looking at the overall data for all inbred strains, the results show no significant difference in lifespan and lifespan variation between sexes; however, considerable differences were found among and within strains. Across strains, lifespan variations of female and male mice are significantly correlated. Strikingly, between sexes, IGF1 levels correlate with the lifespan variation and maximum lifespan in different directions. Female mice with low IGF1 levels have higher variation and extended maximum lifespan. The opposite is detected in males. Compared to domesticated inbred strains, wild-derived inbred strains have elevated lifespan variation due to increased early deaths in both sexes and extended maximum lifespan in female mice. Intriguingly, the sex differences in survival curves of inbred strains negatively associated with age of female puberty, which is significantly accelerated in domesticated inbred strains compared to wild-derived strains. In conclusion, this study suggests that genetic factors are involved in the regulation of sexual disparities in lifespan and lifespan variation, and dissecting the mouse genome may provide novel insight into the underlying genetic mechanisms.
