UCSD study finds positive health effects of eating lots of avocado – fox5sandiego.com

Posted: December 3, 2021 at 5:10 am

SAN DIEGO A study from UC San Diego shows eating your fair share of avocado could lead to consuming fewer calories and an overall healthier diet.

The findings by researchers at the UC San Diego School of Medicine and the Herbert Wertheim School of Public Health and Human Longevity Science were published this month. In a randomized controlled trial, they compared potential health effects over six months between Mexican families that consumed a low allotment of avocados three per week to families that consumed 14 avocados per week.

Avocados are rich in vitamins C, E, K and B6, plus riboflavin, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid, magnesium, potassium, lutein, beta carotene and omaga-3 fatty acids, according to researchers. Half of a medium-sized fruit provides up to 20% of recommended daily fiber, 10% potassium, 5% magnesium, 15% folate and 7.5 grams of monounsaturated fatty acids.

The 72 families, made up of 231 individuals, were randomly assigned to each consumption group. They consisted of at least three family members each over the age of 5, residing in the same home, free of severe chronic disease, not on specific diets, and self-identified as Mexican heritage.

The research team found families that ate a higher number of avocados self-reported eating a fewer number of calories. They also reduced their intake of other foods, including dairy, meats and refined grains and their associated negative nutrients, such as saturated fat and sodium.

Though researchers discerned no change in body mass index measurements or waist circumference between the two groups during the trial, they did note consuming more avocados appeared to speed satiety the feeling of fullness after eating, a Monday news release said. Fats and some dietary fibers, such as those found in avocados, can impact the amount of food consumed by affecting gastrointestinal functions, such as introducing bulk that slows gastric emptying, regulating glucose and insulin reactions, prolonging nutrient absorption and modifying key peptide hormones that signal fullness.

The study was funded in part by the Hass Avocado Board, which donated avocados but had no role in the study, according to UCSD. Researchers chose families of Mexican heritage because they have a higher-adjusted prevalence of obesity and lower intake of key nutrients than other demographic groups in the country, researchers said.

The authors say the findings may offer insight into how to better address obesity and other diseases, particularly in high-risk communities. The full study can be viewed here.

5:2 Intermittent Fasting Diet and Weight Loss – Healthline

Posted: at 5:10 am

Intermittent fasting is a diet plan that switches between fasting and regularly eating.

It works by prolonging the time between eating, so your body finishes burning calories and then begins to burn fat.

This type of eating not only helps you manage your weight but can prevent or even reverse some forms of disease. Experts say many people find intermittent eating more manageable and might stick with it longer than traditional dieting.

While some people use it to lose weight, the biggest benefit is that intermittent fasting seems to help stabilize insulin levels, said Dr. Mahmud Kara, the founder of KaraMD, a website promoting functional medicine.

When you dont eat, your body doesnt have carbohydrates to break down. If there are no carbohydrates, there is no glucose in your blood. And if there is no elevated blood glucose, there is no need for your pancreas to send out insulin, he said.

Intermittent fasting gives your pancreas a break and allows your body the opportunity to balance itself back out, Kara said. Make sure you consider how much you are eating. Its easy to eat too little (or too much).

One of the better-known intermittent fasting diets is the 5:2 plan.

Under this plan, you eat what you want for 5 days each week and then limit yourself to 500 calories on the other 2 days.

In a recent study conducted at Queen Mary University of London, researchers said the results of 5:2 intermittent fasting are similar in effectiveness to traditional dieting.

They also found, however, that people generally preferred intermittent fasting and were more willing to stick with it.

The study included 300 adults with obesity 100 received information on conventional dieting, 100 received information on intermittent fasting, and 100 received information on intermittent fasting along with 6 weeks of support.

The researchers followed participants for a year, noting weight loss. At the end of the study, they noted:

While weight loss was similar in the groups, the number of people who lost weight increased with intermittent fasting.

Researchers said the two groups who used the 5:2 diet had a more positive experience than people using the traditional diet.

This could be an essential factor for doctors recommending weight loss and weight management programs because they might be more likely to remain committed to the diet.

The best news is that there is no one-way to do it, Kara said. Depending on your schedule, personality, and lifestyle, you can pick a fasting protocol that best suits your needs.

No matter which type you choose, its important to remember to eat healthy foods during your chosen eating window, he said. These fasts wont work if you choose meals that are full of processed foods.

Besides the 5:2 plan, other types of intermittent fasting diets include:

There are numerous health benefits of intermittent fasting.

Intermittent fasting can lower cholesterol, reduce liver fat, enhance glucose management, and improve blood pressure, in addition to reducing body weight. Enhanced motor coordination, enhanced endurance, and better sleep have also been linked to intermittent fasting, Shauna Hatcher, MSPH, a certified nutritionist at The National Wellness and Public Health Network, told Healthline.

It can also lead to a longer life, a sharper mind, and protect against type 2 diabetes, heart disease, neurodegenerative disorders caused by age, inflammatory bowel disease, and some types of cancer.

It can take 2 to 4 weeks for your body to adjust to your new way of eating. During this time, you might experience headaches, said Hatcher.

Other possible side effects include digestive issues, such as nausea, diarrhea, constipation, and bloating. Low blood sugar caused by intermittent fasting might make you tired and weak. You might notice sleep disruptions, resulting in fatigue during the day, she said.

Experts say there are some groups of people who should not participate in intermittent fasting:

As helpful as intermittent fasting is, its not for everyone, said Kara. If you have a history of eating disorders or are taking medication that cannot be taken on an empty stomach, be sure to talk with your doctor or nutritionist before starting. The type of food you eat is equally, if not more important, than the time of day or hours you consume the food.

NASA Plans to Retire the Space Station in 2030 and Replace it with Commercially Owned Destinations&#… – Universe Today

Posted: at 5:10 am

While it may seem like the International Space Station is just now fully hitting its stride as far as scientific output and the ability for crew rotations from several different spacecraft, the ISS has been operating with astronauts on board for over 21 years. Knowing the modules and entire physical structure cannot endure the long-term effects of the harsh space environment forever, NASAs Office of the Inspector General has issued a new report outlining the agencys plans to keep the space station in orbit until 2030, and to replace it with one or more commercial space stations.

Anticipating its retirement, NASA has committed to replacing the ISS with one or more commercially owned and operated space destinations, the report says, emphasizing that they hope at least one commercial station could be operational by 2028. This would provide a period of two years of overlap and handover to avoid a substantial gap in on-orbit science investigations. Such a gap would result in the delay of deep space human exploration missions, the report says.

Even though the retirement of the ISS is currently scheduled for 2024, NASA and the international partners have indicated that the ISSs operational life could be extended to 2030.

The Station was designed with a life expectancy of 15 years with a safety factor of two, meaning it could last 30 years after the 1998 launch of its first segments, the report says, adding that NASA is optimistic that the Stations life can be extended to 2030.

But structural wear and tear is becoming evident. NASA and Roscosmos are investigating the cause and long-term impacts of cracks and leaks that were recently discovered in the Stations Service Module Transfer Tunnel, which connects the Service Module to one of eight docking ports on the Station. Causes being explored include structural fatigue, internal damage, external damage, and material defects.

Notably, the report says an updated analysis of the structural longevity of other segments as well should be done because the leaks were caused by cracks that models suggest should not exist. This would suggest the possibility of an earlier-than-projected obsolescence for at least one element of the Station.

The ISS costs about $3 billion a year, roughly a third of NASAs annual human space flight budget. Commercial companies say they can provide brand new facilities for a better price, making for a better investment for NASA.

NASA says the Artemis program, aimed at returning humans to the Moon and ultimately landing astronauts on Mars, is not feasible without continued human health research and technology demonstrations being conducted on the ISS and its eventual replacement.

Therefore, in looking ahead, NASA announced today they have signed agreements with three U.S. companies to develop designs of space stations and other commercial destinations in space. They agency said they want to enable a robust, American-led commercial economy in low-Earth orbit.

The companies are Blue Origin for their Orbital Reef space station design, receiving $130 million, Nanoracks LLC, for $160 million, Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation for $125.6 million.

NASA seeks to maintain an uninterrupted U.S. presence in low-Earth orbit by transitioning from the International Space Station to other platforms, NASA said in a press release. These awards will stimulate U.S. private sector development of commercial, independent space stations that will be available to both government and private-sector customers.

In early 2020, NASA announced a Plan for Commercial LEO Development, which they hope will foster economic development in LEO and to drive innovation. At that time, they announced the selection of Axiom Space of Houston to provide a commercial habitation module for the ISS.

Its great that NASA and the other international partners are planning ahead to keep an operational space station in orbit for the long term. But ultimately, whether in response to an emergency or at the end of its useful service life, NASA acknowledged in the report that there needs to be a plan decommission and deorbit the ISS. This will be technically complex, as well as costly, requiring international participation and a critical decision on timing.

[Herald Interview] Do you have a best friend at the office? Human connection crucial for work efficiency, says behavioral scientist

Jon Levy, behavioral scientist and creator of the Influencers Dinner (Jon Levy)

After COVID-19 forced many aspects of our lives to become more isolated, the world is making a gradual move to return to how we used to be. Commuting to work has resumed and team lunches have been revived, although people still wear their masks and transparent acrylic panels have been erected between people at the tables.

Although South Korea kicked off its living with COVID-19 scheme with eased social distancing rules on Nov. 1, still today many are suffering from social isolation, less contact and a lack of physical touch. Adapting to the changing world, many are feeling lost on how to create more connectedness in their lives.

Jon Levy, a human behavioral scientist from New York, told The Korea Herald the ongoing pandemic has impacted well-being, happiness and longevity because people are missing out on meaningful relations.

People are really stressed out. People are stuck at home, some people are liking it, some arent. And there are many people leaving the company. So companies ask how do we create a work culture that makes people want to be -- how do we develop their relationships -- at work? he said during an interview in Seoul. Levy has worked with global clients including Google, Microsoft and Samsung on work culture crises.

There was an interesting study that looked at (whether employees) have a best friend at work. If you do have a best friend at work, what is that impact on your stay? he said.

Levy said there is a concrete link between having a best friend at work and the amount of effort employees expand in their job, and thats why companies should foster deep and meaningful relationships at work.

According to Gallup, having a best friend at work can be key to engagement and happiness at work.

A 2018 Gallup study showed that women who strongly agree they have a best friend at work are more than twice as likely to be engaged with their work (63 percent) compared with women who say otherwise (29 percent), which leads to the production of higher quality work, better well-being and less likelihood of getting injured on the job.

Levy said working from home due to the pandemic has hurt the process of developing influence, gaining trust and building community.

He said working from home has left people with no transition time.

When I commute, I listen to podcasts, read a book, increase my knowledge and emotionally process my day. If I dont commute anymore, I go straight from frustrating meeting at the end of the day to talking to my family, and thats really tough, he said.

Also for brand new employees, working from home can be frustrating, he said.

Let say Im brand new to the company and the only people I would know is five people Im on calls with. Theres no mentorship, no understanding the company, no necessity to develop other skills, besides specific things Im being told, over the long term. That would leave a huge impact to ones career.

More than a decade ago, Levy created what he calls the Influencers Dinner. At first glance, this secret dining experience may sound like a typical social gathering, just without the names revealed.

Ive hosted 240 dinners across 10 cities in three countries inviting over 2,000 people. I spent most of my adult life convincing people to come to my home, cook me dinner, wash dishes and clean the floor for me, said Levy.

But he had one rule -- people were not allowed to share their names to make everything equal.

If I see a big companys CEO or famous celebrity or Nobel laureate, I may think that Im not so important. So I wanted to make everyone feel just as important so they can connect as a friend, said Levy.

Getting people to cook together is closely related to the Ikea effect, according to Levy.

There is a weird human behavior characteristic called Ikea effect. We care more about Ikea furniture because we had to assemble it. Anything we put more effort into, we care about it more. People cook together, they care about their food and people, he said.

The secret is, we give people a very limited amount of time and a project to do -- too hard to do one person by himself -- that both have to put in effort. What happens is you feel connected to each other.

According to Levy, the art and science of creating deep and meaningful connections with anyone, regardless of their stature or celebrity, lies in the power of community.

Joy shared is double, suffering shared is half -- each of us have different skill sets and expertise. Nobody is self-made anymore. Expecting us to do things alone doesnt work. People have to depend on others, said Levy. Their wisdoms, experience, skills and talents, have a profound impact on us.

Kareem Campbell is a living legend. His style on and off the board has inspired countless people all over the world. Theres always been a freshness about him, and throughout the span of his three-decade career (still very much in motion), he continues to captivate the masses with a fresh approach and timeless technique. He's remained confident yet humble, adapted with the times, and continued to be a trendsetter. I had the pleasure of chatting with him as he brought me up to speed with all of his latest happenings, even remaining casual when mentioning that he was inducted into the Skateboarding Hall of Fame earlier that day. He indulged me with how it all started, went deep into my 90's reminiscing, and fascination with that era of World Industries, especially the Trilogy video, all the way up to Tony Hawks Pro Skater, the relaunch of Axion Footwear and his Ghetto Bird podcast. We covered a lot of ground, so settle in and get comfortable.

About Human Development | Human Development Reports

Posted: November 28, 2021 at 10:16 pm

In 1990 the first Human Development Report introduced a new approach for advancing human wellbeing. Human development or the human development approach - is about expanding the richness of human life, rather than simply the richness of the economy in which human beings live. It is an approach that is focused on people and their opportunities and choices.

People: human development focuses on improving the lives people lead rather than assuming that economic growth will lead, automatically, to greater wellbeing for all. Income growth is seen as a means to development, rather than an end in itself.

Opportunities: human development is about giving people more freedom to live lives they value. In effect this means developing peoples abilities and giving them a chance to use them. For example, educating a girl would build her skills, but it is of little use if she is denied access to jobs, or does not have the right skills for the local labour market. Three foundations for human development are to live a long, healthy and creative life, to be knowledgeable, and to have access to resources needed for a decent standard of living. Many other things are important too, especially in helping to create the right conditions for human development, and some of these are in the table below. Once the basics of human development are achieved, they open up opportunities for progress in other aspects of life.

Choice: human development is, fundamentally, about more choice. It is about providing people with opportunities, not insisting that they make use of them. No one can guarantee human happiness, and the choices people make are their own concern. The process of development human development - should at least create an environment for people, individually and collectively, to develop to their full potential and to have a reasonable chance of leading productive and creative lives that they value.

As the international community moves toward implementing and monitoring the 2030 agenda, the human development approach remains useful to articulating the objectives of development and improving peoples well-being by ensuring an equitable, sustainable and stable planet.

The human development approach, developed by the economist Mahbub Ul Haq, is anchored in the Nobel laureate Amartya Sens work on human capabilities, often framed in terms of whether people are able to be and do desirable things in life. Examples include

Beings: well fed, sheltered, healthy

Doings: work, education, voting, participating in community life.

Freedom of choice is central to the approach: someone choosing to be hungry (during a religious fast say) is quite different to someone who is hungry because they cannot afford to buy food.

Ideas on the links between economic growth and development during the second half of the 20th Century also had a formative influence. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and economic growth emerged as leading indicator of national progress in many countries, yet GDP was never intended to be used as a measure of wellbeing.. In the 1970s and 80s development debate considered using alternative focuses to go beyond GDP, including putting greater emphasis on employment, followed by redistribution with growth, and then whether people had their basic needs met. These ideas helped pave the way for the human development (both the approach and its measurement).

Human Development Reports (HDRs) have been released most years since 1990 and have explored different themes through the human development approach. They have had an extensive influence on development debate worldwide. The reports, produced by the Human Development Report Office for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), are ensured of editorial independence by the United Nations General Assembly. Indeed they are seen as reports to UNDP, not of UNDP. This allows each report greater freedom to explore ideas and constructively challenge policies. The reports have also inspired national and regional analyses which, by their nature, usually address issues that are more country or regionally - specific. A library of reports is available here.

One of the more important achievements of the human development approach, as embodied in successive HDRs, has been to ensure a growing acceptance of the fact that monetary measures, such as GDP per capita, are inadequate proxies of development. The first Human Development Report introduced the Human Development Index (HDI) as a measure of achievement in the basic dimensions of human development across countries.

This somewhat crude measure of human development remains a simple unweighted average of a nations longevity, education and income and is widely accepted in development discourse. Over the years, however, some modifications and refinements have been made to the index. Indeed, the critics of the HDI and their concerns have stimulated and continue to stimulate - adjustments to the index and the development of companion indices which help paint a broader picture of global human development.

Science Says December Babies Are The Best Kids Activities Blog – ToysMatrix

Posted: at 9:46 pm

I cant think of a better way to celebrate the holidays than with a new baby in tow. After all, a new baby does seem to be the ultimate holiday gift. And now my feelings are validated because Science Says December Babies Are The Best and I have to agree.

My husband is a December baby and while he seems to dislike it because people would celebrate his birth-mas (birthday and Christmas together) rather than separate the two, I always found it quite cool when he was born. His birthday is December 22 and he was taken home on Christmas Day. A Christmas baby? I think that is the ultimate coolness but that isnt the scientific reason why December babies are the best.

According to a study published in the Journal of Aging Research, December babies are born with some pretty unique traits and tend to live longer than babies born in any other month.

This study suggests that the December-born have a significantly higher risk of surviving up to age 105+ compared to the June-born (babies)

So, if you know someone born in December, chances are, they will be living a long and prosperous life and possibly years beyond 100.

We developed a large sample of validated centenarians, their siblings, and spouses to study early-life seasonal effects on human longevity. We found significant associations between month of birth and longevity: individuals born in SeptemberNovember have higher likelihood of becoming centenarians compared to March-born individuals. These results are consistent with the reports of higher life expectancy for persons born in the end of the year

In addition to living longer, babies born between November January were found to have unique traits such as being left-handed (prominently in males) although, that doesnt seem to hold true for my husband who is right-handed.

Other fun facts of December babies? Well, one report says that December babies are most likely to be rich and become dentists. Cha-Ching!

Now, if you dont have a December baby and are thinking of having another, youd need become pregnant in March. Ha youre welcome!

Winter Woes or SAD? – Here’s How To Cope – Longevity LIVE – Longevity LIVE

Posted: at 9:46 pm

With winter (at least the beginning of it) come the holidays. Traditionally, this is a time for celebration and happiness. However, sadness during the winter months, despite the festive cheer that surrounds you, can be a real issue. This is often referred to as the winter woes or the winter blues. Feeling sad is a normal part of being human. As humans, we feel things quite deeply and changes in mood are normal and healthy. However, winter woes can have an impact on how you function on a daily basis. Even worse, they can develop into a seasonal depression; SAD.

Symptoms include lethargy, craving carbs, and feeling unusually sad. If you are experiencing this, you might find yourself sleeping more and struggling to find motivation. Essentially, its a kind of seasonal depressive episode.

In the case of winter woes, its typically relatively mild. However, symptoms can progress into a more severe seasonal depression called SAD. Being sad is a part of who we are and not something that we want to get rid of. However, it can be a sign of the winter blues and can affect our ability to function properly in our lives.

The winter months can induce feelings of sadness and despair. During these times, we tend to leave our homes in the dark and go to work in the dark. This can really have an impact on our mood and general feelings of

wellness. It seems that the issue stems from a lack of sunlight. The shorter days of winter disrupt the natural, circadian rhythm. Some people are more sensitive to this disruption than others. Geography also seems to play quite a large role in both the winter woes and SAD. It seems that the further north you get from the equator, the more likely you are to develop SAD. The delay in sunlightreaching the body is what seems to play havoc with the brain and the body.

Michael Terman, Ph.D. explains that in the northernmost states of the USA, sunrise can be delayed by a massive 4 and a half hours in the winter. It also seems that low levels of vitamin D may be partly to blame. However, the only way to knowwhether your vitamin D levels are low is to get them tested.

Seasonal affective disorder, usually (and rather appropriately) shortened to SAD, its a bit more serious than winter woes. Ultimately, it has a lot to do with the severity of the symptoms. Its also much more complex than sadness.

People thatstruggle with SAD have all the symptoms of a major depressive disorder. This, according to Georgia Gaveras, a psychiatrist and co-founder ofTalkiatry can include large personality shifts. This might include a change in eating and sleeping habits as well as increased levels of lethargy.

SAD can be a huge issue as people can turn to self-medicating through drugs and alcohol. SAD causes the brain to produce excess melatonin which is the hormone that we rely on to regulate sleep patterns and the body clock.

According to Terman, the most obvious differences lie in the severity of the symptoms. Whilst many people might struggle to get up in the winter, people with SAD cannot get out of bed to make it to work on time. People with SAD also appear to gain a lot more weight than people who are struggling with winter woes. Usually, SAD results ina weight gain of more than 6 pounds. Essentially, SAD is the winter woes more serious sister.

The most obvious answer here is to get as much sunlight as you possibly can. However, when natural sunlight is scarce, you might need an alternative.

Unfortunately, simply standing by the window or flipping your light switch just doesnt do it. What you need is direct sunlight.

Lets be honest, even when there is sunlight, most of us dont want to go and stand outside in the freezing cold. So, what you need in order to simulate sunlight is a sunbox.

Sunboxes are lights with special fluorescent tubes that mimic the suns beneficial rays. When it comes to making use of a sunbox, it doesnt seem to matter how severe (or not) the symptoms are. Both people with SAD and winter woes benefited from the same amount of light therapy.

According to Terman, you need 30 minutes of exposure done first thing in the morning. The timing, Terman says, is vital. He explains by administering it first thing in the morning, you keep your body clock on its springtime cycle during the winter, and thats how the depressive symptoms are lifted. If you get this exposure while you eat breakfast or get ready, you dont have to dedicate 30 minutes to your sunbox.

There are also a number of natural products that can help you get through the winter blues. One of these is fish oil. Which is believed to be the number one supplement for treating seasonal depression.

If youre feeling low on energy, try avoiding refined carbohydrates and sugars. A healthy diet should include a variety of fruits, vegetables, and protein sources. But avoiding refined carbohydrates can help boost serotonin levels and reduce stress. However, you dont need to completely avoid carbohydrates. The best course of action is to just separate the two and eat protein and carbohydrates separately.
