Eukaryotic Transcription Factors - , David S. Latchman
ll4.me Eukaryotic Transcription Factors - , David S. Latchman Transcription, or the process by which DNA produces RNA, is a central aspect of gene expression. Transcription factors regulate transcription during development and in disease states. As such, it is critical for researchers to gain a good understanding of the relationship between the structure of various families of transcription factors and their function, as well as roles in human disease. Since publication of the Fourth Edition, there have been major advances, notably in the areas of chromatin remodeling and genome-scale analyses. This complete update includes all new coverage of the latest developments, from enabling genomic technologies to studies on the importance of post-translational modifications beyond phosphorylation events.Brand new coverage in this edition includes: * Potential of transcription factors as therapeutic targets in human disease * Importance of histone modifications * Use of genome-based sequence analysis and high-throughput methods * Applications of the chromatin immunoprecipitation (ChIP) assay * Transcriptional elongation * Regulation by post-translational modifications * Regulatory networks and bioinformaticsAuthor: Latchman, David Author: Latchman, David S. Model Organisms In Drug Discovery – Video

Model Organisms In Drug Discovery
ll4.me Model Organisms In Drug Discovery Fruit flies are "little people with wings" goes the saying in the scientific community, ever since the completion of the Human Genome Project and its revelations about the similarity amongst the genomes of different organisms. It is humbling that most signalling pathways which "define" humans are conserved in Drosophila, the common fruit fly.Feed a fruit fly caffeine and it has trouble falling asleep; feed it antihistamines and it cannot stay awake. A C. elegans worm placed on the antidepressant flouxetine has increased serotonin levels in its tiny brain. Yeast treated with chemotherapeutics stop their cell division. Removal of a single gene from a mouse or zebrafish can cause the animals to develop Alzheimers disease or heart disease. These organisms are utilized as surrogates to investigate the function and design of complex human biological systems.Advances in bioinformatics, proteomics, automation technologies and their application to model organism systems now occur on an industrial scale. The integration of model systems into the drug discovery process, the speed of the tools, and the in vivo validation data that these models can provide, will clearly help definition of disease biology and high-quality target validation. Enhanced target selection will lead to the more efficacious and less toxic therapeutic compounds of the future.Leading experts in the field provide detailed accounts of model organism research that have ...From:wilmatrull9865Views:0 0ratingsTime:00:07More inPeople Blogs

KADLEC MTHFR and Memory – Video

Posted: at 4:42 am

KADLEC MTHFR and Memory
MEMORY LOSS: Is it inevitable? MTHFR stands for MethylTetraHydroFolate Reductase Deficiency. MTHFR is a genetic disorder that inhibits some people from being able to convert folic acid from food to the active form of folic acid, L-methylfolate, that is used by the body. MTHFR was identified in the Human Genome Project, a study designed to identify treatable genetic disorders. New research from the Human Genome project on preventing loss of memory as you age. Neil Rawlins, mD, presented on MTHFR on October 23rd, 2012 at the Red Lion Hanford House in Richland, Washington. View this important information on how treating mTHFR deficiencies could help memory loss as we age.From:charterchannel3Views:0 0ratingsTime:58:22More inPeople Blogs

11/1/12 NIH K Awards: Perspectives from Awardees
On Thursday, November 1, 2012, Duke Postdoctoral Services and the Duke Office for Faculty Mentoring held a panel discussion on NIH Career Development or K Awards. The NIH K Awards, cover a wide range of career development needs. Most are designed to offer PIs protected time in which to develop their research, transition research focus, or mentor students and postdocs. The panel in this seminar was made up of Duke MDs and PhDs who had experience applying for NIH K awards. Panelists discussed applying for a K and answered questions about finding the right mechanism for particular cases, preparing the application, and finding support. They shared tips for success and for overcoming challenges. Panelists: - Steve Choi, MD, , holds a basic science NIDDK K08, "RAC1 Promotes Hepatic Stellate Accumulation/Activation in Liver Injury". - Liz Cirulli, PhD, postdoc who recently transitioned to Asst Professor at the Duke Center for Human Genome Variation, submitted a K01 and is waiting to hear her funding status. She will give her perspective on the writing process and what resources/support she needed. - Michael Cohen-Wolkowiez, MD, Asst Professor of Pediatrics-Infectious Diseases, holds an NICHD K23, "Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics of Antibiotics in Premature Infants". - Chad Grotegut, MD, Asst Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, holds an NICHD K08, "Role of GRK6-Mediated Oxytocin Receptor Desensitization in Labor". - Dennis Ko, PhD, Asst Professor of Molecular Genetics ...From:DukePostdocServicesViews:3 0ratingsTime:01:14:50More inEducation
