Genome sequencing may help identify new drug targets for Pneumocystis pneumonia
Posted: at 1:46 am
Washington, December 27 (ANI): Scientists have sequenced the genome of the fungus Pneumocystis jirovecii, which is responsible for Pneumocystis pneumonia, a common and often deadly infection in immunocompromised patients.
This could help identify new targets for drugs to treat and prevent
The organism cannot yet be isolated and grown for study in the laboratory, so details about Pneumocystis pneumonia, the biology of P. jirovecii, and its pathogenicity are hard to come by. The genome sequence represents a wealth of new information for doctors and researchers tackling this disease.
Pneumocystis pneumonia is an opportunistic infection that strikes most often in individuals with diminished immune systems.
The disease gained importance in the 1980s, said Philippe Hauser of the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois and University of Lausanne, in Switzerland, corresponding author of the study.
"Recognized first among malnourished infants, P. jirovecii pneumonia became a public issue with the advent of the HIV epidemic," stated Hauser.
Today, the disease most commonly affects HIV-infected persons who are unaware of their status as well as solid organ transplant recipients and patients with hemato-oncologic or autoimmune diseases. Since the organism cannot be grown in the lab for study, researchers have long made do with studying P. jirovecii's lab-friendly relatives, species that infect animals and plants, in order to explore the secrets of the human disease.
In the study of infectious disease, access to the genome of a pathogen provides new information that can be pivotal in combating the diseases is causes. The hope is that the genome of P. jirovecii will lead to new advances in therapies for those suffering from Pneumocystis pneumonia.
The study was to be published in mBio, the online open-access journal of the American Society for Microbiology. (ANI)

Starchild Skull – The New Evidence – Lloyd Pye – Video

Starchild Skull - The New Evidence - Lloyd Pye
Lloyd Pye - Starchild Skull - The New Evidence - Lloyd, who has worked as a Hollywood Screen Writer, author and lecturer, is a long time researcher into Hominids and Hominoids, will be discussing the world-famous Starchild Skull, a real bone skull found in Mexico in 1930. Lloyd illustrates 25 major physical differences between the Starchild and a normal human skull. He shows that several parts of the Starchild are not seen in any other skulls or bones on planet Earth! Most importantly, he delves into recent research on the Starchild #39;s DNA, which clearly shows that as soon as its entire genome is recovered and sequenced, its genetics will confirm it is vastly more distant from humans than are chimps or gorillas. The Starchild Skull represents history about to be made as big and as important as history can be made, so don #39;t miss this personal introduction to a relic that will establish once and for all that we humans are not alone in the universe....and never have been! See http://www.starchildproject.com for more information about the Starchild and http for more information about Lloyd.From:checktheevidenceViews:284 17ratingsTime:01:52:21More inEducation

Transposable elements – Video

Transposable elements
For more information, log on to- shomusbiology.weebly.com Download the study materials here- shomusbiology.weebly.com A transposable element (TE) is a DNA sequence that can change its position within the genome, sometimes creating mutations and altering the cell #39;s genome size. Transposition often results in duplication of the TE. Barbara McClintock #39;s discovery of these jumping genes early in her career earned her a Nobel prize in 1983.[1] TEs make up a large fraction of the C-value of eukaryotic cells. They are generally considered "junk DNA". In Oxytricha, which has a unique genetic system, they play a critical role in development.[2] They are also very useful to researchers as a means to alter DNA inside a living organism. Class I (retrotransposons): They copy themselves in two stages, first from DNA to RNA by transcription, then from RNA back to DNA by reverse transcription. The DNA copy is then inserted into the genome in a new position. Reverse transcription is catalyzed by a reverse transcriptase, which is often coded by the TE itself. Retrotransposons behave very similarly to retroviruses, such as HIV. There are three main orders of retrotransposons (other orders are less abundant): Those with long terminal repeats (LTRs): encode reverse transcriptase, similar to retroviruses; LINEs: encode reverse transcriptase, lack LTRs, transcribed by RNA polymerase II; SINEs: do not code for reverse transcriptase, transcribed by RNA polymerase III. Retroviruses can be ...From:Suman BhattacharjeeViews:1 0ratingsTime:09:07More inEducation

Reading the book of life: Pol van Dorpe at TEDxUHasselt
Sequencing the human genome has been possible for quite a while, but has always been very expensive. Pol van Dorpe is working on technology that #39;s about to change this and will make it affordable for everyone. In this talk, Pol van Dorpe explains how this technology will change the world. Pol Van Dorpe is currently active as a principal scientist at Imec, Leuven and part time professor at the physics department of the KULeuven. In 2006, he obtained his PhD at the faculty of engineering of the KULeuven in 2006, after which he was appointed as a postdoctoral fellow of the FWO-Flanders (2006-2012), based in Imec, and focused on metal based nanophotonics, or plasmonics for biosensors and energy harvesting. During this period he worked for some time in Stanford University and he set up world-wide collaborations with renowned scientists in this field. His work has led to over 50 peer-reviewed papers in high impact factor journals and has attracted more than 1000 citations. Currently he is active in the bio-nano-electronics department of Imec and his main research focus is applying nanophotonics concepts to create new ways to unravel the sequence of the DNA, ie the genetic code. In thespirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group.
