Dubstop – Video

Dubstop
This piece of found footage dates to between the wars, a time when the USSR was struggling to define its place in the world and establish its legitimacy on the international level, while simultaneously trying to build identity and solidarity among its people. During this time the Soviet propaganda machine was running at full steam, and this piece is emblematic of the films of the time, in its use of a minimalist allegorical narrative, fear tactics, and modeling clay to push Marxist values upon the citizens. Like other Soviet propaganda, it combines traditional Russian music with more contemporary forms to try and forge an identity that is futurist and materialist, while still deeply immersed in Russian cultural roots. The breaking of the fourth wall at the end of the piece eventually led to the piece being censored for its engagement with "modern imperialist theatrical devices", or #1087; #1086; #1089; #1091; #1076; #1086; #1084; #1086; #1077; #1095; #1085; #1072; #1103; #1084; #1072; #1096; #1080; #1085; #1072;. Trotsky was formerly featured in the film as the "great socialist leader character", but his scenes were either cut or airbrushed out, after being condemned by Stalin. (The discovery of this footage was a collaborative project for Music 325 by the comrades whose names appear in the credits. All credit for the discovery of, and all rights for, the footage belongs to them.)From:PatriciojaulaViews:4 0ratingsTime:03:15More inFilm Animation

Unlikely rock star Dan Deacon brings irresistible dance party to Philly

Posted: at 9:40 pm

Jonathan Valania, FOR THE INQUIRER Posted: Friday, November 16, 2012, 10:54 AM

On record, acclaimed Baltimore-based futurist Dan Deacon sounds like Philip Glass on Red Bull. A lot of Red Bull.

Live, he resembles nothing so much as a hip, wise-cracking camp counselor DJing a dance party for people who can't really dance. His name may not ring a bell but for people under 30 he is Santa Claus with a wave-function generator. And last night he came to town - Union Transfer, to be exact - after a three-year absence from area stages, to promote America, his album-length meditation on the national soul.

Bulky, bearded and balding, rocking a droopy T-shirt and his trademark red Sally Jessy Raphael frames, the 31-year-old Deacon looks more like a roadie than a rock star. And yet he is. Taking the stage to the rock-operatic strains of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody," during which the near-capacity crowd sang along with every word, Deacon started off the show with an absurdist self-actualization exercise that somehow incorporated your Netflix queue, a mythical Criterion Collection edition of Deuce Bigelow, and "wafers, delicious wafers," before launching into the freaky tribal stomp of "Of the Mountains."

This set the agenda for the rest of the night: prismatic, psychotropic electronica combined with giddy group exercises that required and received full audience participation. During "Konono Ripoff No. 1" he had the crowd form a giant circle for a tag-team dance contest in the middle, with each dancer getting 10 seconds to bust a move. For "Crash Jam" he arranged the crowd Busby Berkeley-style to create a giant blooming lotus.

For "Guilford Avenue Bridge," a song that sounded, I kid you not, like two rusting mechanical jackasses locked in sweaty death match, he had the audience form a human tunnel that snaked from the lip of the stage up to the balcony and back. For "True Thrush" he had the crowd download his own Dan Deacon app that turned their smart phones into an amazing technicolor dream machine.

Whatever subtlety and variation Deacon's music loses in a live setting, he more than makes up for it with visceral, chest-thumping heft, not to mention all the gimmicky but grin-inducing theatrics to which no human in attendance with a functioning soul, appetite for fun and a working sense of humor was immune.

FLR038 :: Kaarel :: Waiting For EP (Inc. Voigt Volta and Cesar Coronado Remix)
Flumo shakes again its fantastic sonic mixer with release number 38, back with Sevillian Kaarel, the Berlin artista, author of one of the hotest releases of last year: "Cyclic Situations Ep" (FLR026). This time, Kaarel brings two new tracks, "Room Service" and "You Make Me Feel Better", the later comes with two remixes by Cesar Coronado and Voigt Volta (Sebastian Voigt Eric Volta). With respect to the originals, "Room Service" is a Techno cluster bomb, hard and devious, framed among a demolishing bass and a combination of quasi-industrial sonorous bursts with a particular use of a funky vocals. "You Make Me Feel Better" is a delicate sample of harmonic House, of ketaminic cadence, which focuses its powers in the creation of a sad, gloomy atmosphere, becoming step by step a beautiful sung melody, full of pure Soul breath. Cesar Coronado, on the other hand, remakes this last track in the same cadence parameters, but adding a precious retro-futurist melody with a slight dose of deepness. In the meantime, Voigt Volta #39;s remix of "You Make Me Feel Better" becomes an epic odyssey of nine minutes of mutant Techno mutante, perfect to mark a sea change in any world club. If something characterizes this Flumo 038 release, is the fact that it consolidates the label and its artists as one of the main bastions of electronic underground music made in Spain. No end date for a ROH limiting and becoming part of the frontiers of any musical genre.From:flumorecordingsViews:0 0ratingsTime:10:06More inMusic

Artist Jay Jarvie Aims to Give Lady Liberty a Sister with Historic Statue of Providence Project

Posted: at 9:40 pm

MEDFORD, Ore., Nov. 15, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --Author, artist, and futurist Jay Jarvie has assembled a team of business professionals to help him in building what may be the most significant public artwork project since the completion of Mt. Rushmore (1939). From his original sculpture artwork titled: Providence Lifts All, Jarvie intends to re-create the sculpture on a much grander scale. At 140 foot tall, the bronze monument will be second in height to no other US sculptures, other than the Statue of Liberty at 151 foot tall. This is no coincidence, as the sculpture is modeled after Lady Liberty and is intended to act as a "sister" monument in both form and symbolism.

Providence Lifts All is a figure representing the foreseeing care and guidance over man and the creatures of the earth. In her right hand she holds a sword, where Liberty holds a torch. The sword represents divine authority or authority executed rightly as God does. In her left hand, she holds two scrolls representing knowledge and wisdom. On her shoulder she carries a shield representing truth. Under her foot is a serpent representing Providence's power and triumph over evil.

Providence Lifts All will be built in a similar fashion to methods used to construct the Statue of Liberty with a steel framework supporting a thin metal shell. The two sculptures diverge in that the Providence Monument will be covered with a skin of bronze panels created by the lost wax process, rather than copper plates created by repose, as the Statue of Liberty was.

Inspiration for the monument came as the artist contemplated how he could generate enthusiasm for a separate project, focused on teaching sound human relations and fair economic practices; ideas that could lead us toward a higher form of civilization. "What I needed was a way to inspire people," said Mr. Jarvie. "More than just inspire, I needed a symbol of the intention of my work." That symbol, "Lady Providence," was spurred by the suggestion of the late Viktor Frankl, who suggested a Statue of Responsibility should be placed on the West Coast of the United States to balance the Statue of Liberty on the East Coast. "Viktor's recommendation was well taken, but what I needed," says Mr. Jarvie, "was something more than responsibility. Providence became the symbol; providence included responsibility and much more."

Jarvie has experience in foundry and bronze work, but this scale of project requires structural engineering and management experience as well. With methods developed in the construction of the largest bronze statue in the world, the Ushiku Amida Buddha in Japan, Jarvie and his team will use modern technology, digital enlargement, and CNC manufacturing to minimize costs and manpower. Even with these modern advancements a project like this is still fine art at its best.

The monument project coordinators will begin a fundraising venture on November 19th, 2012 on the Kickstarter.com website listed under The Statue of Providence-- heading. All contributions will gain the contributors an item of artwork to commemorate what truly will be an historic occasion.

Futurist , innovation mentor lecture business leaders on economic trends

Posted: at 9:40 pm

Santa Maria entrepreneurs got a lesson on thinking outside the box Thursday from a pair of businessmen who have made careers out of doing it, at a Futures Forum hosted by the Economic Alliance of Northern Santa Barbara County.

Simon Anderson, futurist and co-author of Foresight 20/20, and Rick Bess, former director and idea mentor for Adobe Systems and founder of PreBeta Inc., offered Santa Maria Valley business people a glimpse into cutting edge business from the power of online learning to the challenges and opportunities of turning northern Santa Barbara County into a international business center.

Anderson, who practiced what he preached by delivering his keynote speech via web video conference, specializes in helping business people embrace emerging technologies. He emphasized education, both how it needs to change and how it is already embracing technology.

I think right now we are beginning to unlearn the way we do things, he said, pointing out that more and more traditional education is turning to social media to better prepare its students. The world is changing faster than text books can be printed.

Anderson pointed out that while use of social media is rapidly increasing, one-third of the top 25 business schools in the country still dont have social media courses. He also said 53 percent of college graduates 25 years old and younger are in occupations that dont require a degree.

Online learning gurus like Salman Khan, whose KhanAcademy sprang from online mathematics tutorials for a young cousin into a free online education platform, are revolutionizing education, Anderson said. The academys website offers Learn almost anything for free and 208,678,274 lessons delivered.

That kind of global availability and access is how Bess said EconNSBC needs to focus its efforts.

Bess, who grew up in the Santa Maria Valley and graduated from Righetti High School before moving on to Stanford University and Adobe Systems, said that like online learning, where lessons can be passed across international borders, Santa Maria Valley businesses need to focus beyond conventional boundaries to succeed.

The chief executive officer of PreBeta Inc., a company that specializes in organizational innovation solutions and consulting, asked the crowd of more than 100 local business leaders to define boundaries. Are they defined by geography or governments such as cities or counties?

To me, those are definitions but not boundaries, he said.
