From songwriting savants (Kurt Vile) to psych-pop troupes (Dr. Dog), punk stalwarts (Pissed Jeans) and noisy newcomers (Purling Hiss), Philadelphias music scene at least from afar seems to be having a moment.

With its latest, Lost in the Dream, The War on Drugs headlining The Neptune Theatre Friday continues this impressive run.

Up until now, the foursome was best known as the group Vile played in before his solo career took off. On Dream, however, bandleader Adam Granduciel proves hes completely fine on his own.

Bob Dylans tumbling lilt and Tom Pettys fist-pumping choruses are undeniable reference points, but the hourlong set isnt just a nostalgia trip.

Choice cuts Under the Pressure, below, An Ocean in Between the Waves and In Reverse instill AM Gold-styled melodies with audiophile-grade sonics, sounding as crisp and propulsive as anything off Daft Punk and The Arcade Fires recent releases maybe even moreso.

The Neptunes top-tier acoustics and cozy setting are apt fits for Granduciels rich, resonant songs and the overwhelming acclaim Dream has received since coming out last week suggests hes not long for such friendly confines.
