Tech it up a notch: Q&A with futurist designer Yves Bhar

Posted: at 6:40 am

The Swiss-born/San Francisco-based product guru Yves Bhar may very well be the hardest working man in design.

The founder of Bay Area-based creative lab Fuseproject has devised some of the most useful and innovative objects in the marketplace.

Whether intended for mobile techies (like Bhars now-iconic Jawbone) or aimed at lifting the poor out of poverty like his ingenious One Laptop Per Child concept Bhar stands at the meeting point between impact and inspiration.

But that doesnt mean Bhars creations arent also fun. How else to describe his latest designs for SodaStream, the DIY carbonated water-maker now in the midst of a global revival?

Bhar signed on with SodaStream back in 2012 to help develop its updated aesthetic. Now, for spring, Bhars newest SodaStream model the futuristic Power will include nifty touches such as three different fizz levels and a stainless-steel and aluminum shell. Bhar also helped update the design for SodaStreams collection of new flavors, which includes English Garden and Green Apple and Cucumber.

When not working with major global brands like Swarovski, Samsung and Herman Miller, Bhar can be found surfing with his three children or enjoying San Franciscos celebrated culinary scene.

We caught up with him this week at his Potrero Hill studio to talk travel, food and design festivals.

Japan and Europes Basque region are both destinations that inspire my sense of design. For me, they are each a place rooted in great food and a way of living that really spawns creativity.

There is not one specific product that I still wish I could design. I dont think in terms of something becoming my dream project. Because when I start a project even the most humble one my job is to turn it into a dream project.

Futurist Jack Uldrich to Address Technological Trends and Future Proofing in the Medical Device Industry

Posted: at 6:40 am

Minneapolis, MN (PRWEB) February 18, 2015

"One word: Plastics." This quote was funny, pithy and incredibly insightful back in 1967 from the film "The Graduate." Forty-seven years later, it actually is one of the great truths within the medical device industry. Futurist Jack Uldrich will elaborate on technological advances that have changed the shape of things to come and how leaders in the medical device industry can future-proof themselves for the sea of changes that are coming.

The leading medical device manufacturer that Uldrich will address in Minneapolis on February 18th provides a wide range of manufacturing capabilities including machining, plastic injection molding, stamping, metal forming and clean room assembly and packaging. Uldrich will deliver his keynote, "The Big AHA: How to Future Proof the Medical Device Industry." In the presentation he will outline for their audience members the ten technological trends that will transform the medical device world of tomorrow. Uldrich also aims to help them identify concrete actions they can take today to future-proof themselves against the tides of tomorrow.

"In the near future, the greatest change will be the accelerating rate of change," says Uldrich. While Uldrich will outline the tech trends that will be transforming the industry he will also address future-proofing. "The key to future-proofing is embracing paradox: learning to unlearn, thinking about the unthinkable, recognizing failure as a key component of success, and understanding that an awareness of ones ignorance is a key component of true wisdom."

A selection of Uldrich's previous clients include Emerson, ABB, St. Jude, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, Pfizer, United Healthcare and Allina. He travels the world speaking and writing on the transformation of health care, agriculture, education, energy, finance, retail and manufacturing. He argues that creativity and action are more powerful and versatile than knowledge. And he reminds people that forty-seven years ago, while "Plastics" may have seemed like a joke it is now one of the waves of the future.

Parties interested in learning more about Jack, his books, his daily blog or his speaking availability are encouraged to visit his website. Media wishing to know more about either the event or interviewing Jack as a futurist or trend expert can contact Amy Tomczyk at (651) 343.0660.

Futurist Jack Uldrich to Address Smart Homes

Posted: February 17, 2015 at 6:40 am

Las Vegas, NV (PRWEB) February 17, 2015

If one is of a certain age the television show The Jetsons provided the TV viewing world with images of what the Smart Home of the Future might look like....flying cars, robot servants, food in pill form. It seemed a crazy far off world and yet here in 2015 many of those very things that were presented in Jestons are coming to fruition. On February 17th, Global futurist and keynote speaker Jack Uldrich will be addressing audience members of Hunter Douglas in Las Vegas discussing five transforming trends transforming the smart home of the future. In other words, Uldrich will be talking about some of the very things that the Jeston's provided as entertainment back in the late sixties and seventies.

When asked what a good futurist does, Uldrich says, "The best futurists are those who can identify trends and technologies that are 'way off to the side' today but will move from todays periphery to tomorrows center."

"Contrary to popular belief, futurists cant see into the futureand, should you happen to run into one that claims to have this unique skill, my best advice is to run away as fast as you can because they are flat-out lying." Uldrich makes a living researching and speaking on future trends and is a leading expert on helping businesses adapt to change.

Uldrich provides provocative new perspectives on competitive advantage, change management and transformational leadership, his most recent clients include the Outsourcing World Summit, Farm Credit Systems, and serving as a panelist for the Food management Institute. He has also traveled the U.S. with Verizon Wireless and ABB in recent months. His clients run the gamut from health care, agriculture, education, energy, finance, retail and manufacturing.

Following his keynote for Hunter Douglas this week, Uldrich will travel back to his home base of Minneapolis and address Cretex with his presentation, "The Big AHA: How to Future Proof the Medical Device Industry."

Parties interested in learning more about him, his books, his daily blog or his speaking availability are encouraged to visit his website. Media wishing to know more about either the event or interviewing Jack as a futurist or trend expert can contact Amy Tomczyk at (651) 343.0660.

Local business leaders told to start thinking of region as a creative center

Posted: February 14, 2015 at 3:43 pm

Published: Friday, February 13, 2015 at 2:57 p.m. Last Modified: Friday, February 13, 2015 at 4:17 p.m.

SARASOTA - Living in a global, digitally connected world, Southwest Florida leaders need to start thinking of the region as a creative center, futurist and author David Houle told the Greater Sarasota Chamber of Commerce on Friday.

At the same time, the community should begin edging away from defining itself primarily by its beaches.

Houle contends rising sea levels brought on by continued global warming will cause many beaches to disappear as early as the 2030s or 2040s.

"Ask people outside Florida what they think of as Florida, and they say Disney World and beaches," Houle told the chamber's annual kickoff breakfast, attended by 450 and held at the Polo Grill. "That is not a strategy.

"The issues the state has to face in next 15 years are water usage, education and completely redoing the transportation, energy and communications infrastructure in the state," Houle said.

The author of six books, "futurist in residence" at the Ringling College of Art & Design and a Herald-Tribune columnist, Houle splits time between Evanston, Illinois, and Sarasota.

His new book, written with Ringling professor Tim Rumage and due out in April, will argue that world leaders need to make drastic changes to prevent environmental catastrophe.

Such thinking should be at the forefront in Southwest Florida, where a growing population and an eroding shoreline will have a dramatic impact going forward.

Houle also argues technological advancements are rippling through society and are affecting the very development of children.
