CEDIA 2017 Keynote Dave Evans: IoT Futurist Inspires New Thinking for Smart-Home Pros – CEPro

Stringify co-founder and CTO Dave Evans, the guy who coined the term "Internet of Everything" at Cisco, will deliver the opening keynote at CEDIA 2017, the trade show for home-technology specialists.

During a "CEDIA Talk" last year (below), Evans noted that in the coming years, "the power of your smart phone will fit inside a red blood cell," with massive implications for "what we connect and how we connect it."

We won't be asking, "What is connected?" Instead, we'll be asking, "What isnotconnected," he suggests.

"We now create more new data every 10 minutes than we did in all of human history as of just a few years ago," Evans says. "All of this data has huge implications for deep learning. ... The more data you put into these systems, the more they can learn."

He points to IBM Watson, which now can teach college courses and soon could replace lawyers with its ability to process 65 million pages of text "with a linguistic understanding" per second.

As further example of deep learning, Evans points to machines that can learn to see, given massive amounts of images and descriptions scraped from numerous sources.

In one illustration (above), a computer auto-generates the correct description, "Woman in white dress standing with tennis racket with two people in green behind her."

Video: Stringify's Dave Evans, CEDIA Talk, 2017

Not only can machines learn to see, Evans says, They can also see things we cant see.

For example, MITs work in Eulerian Video Magnification allows a system to determine a persons heartbeat by amplifying frames in a video and analyzing minute changes in their skin color.

Dale Evans Keynote Wed., Sept. 6 5:30 pm - 6:30 pm San Diego Convention Center more special events at CEDIA

CEDIA 2017 Conference: Sept. 5-9 Tradeshow floor: Sept. 7-9 San Diego Convention Center Registration opens May 31

He asks the audience to imagine the implications of this technology for things such as baby cams and health checks for elders.

Today it is used in applications such as language translation (point your phone at foreign text) and math calculations (point your phone at an equation).

With all of the processing occurring in the cloud these days, dumb devices can become pretty smart, says Evans: The cloud and connectivity bring super-computing capabilities to anything with a connection.

So then theres the issue of connectivity. Indeed, that critical component of IoT is making great strides. Today were seeing faster speeds, lower power requirements and new ways of communicating, for example over LED light waves (Li-Fi).

All this futurism stuff Evans was chief futurist at Cisco does it really matter to home-technology specialists today?

Sure, its interesting to see where things are headed, but many lessons can be gleaned from developments along the way.

For example, you know that Photomath application that calculates complex mathematic equations via the camera on a smart phone?

How can we apply similar technology today, for example, to identify A/V components and connections?

What could we do with facial recognition? Lots of products in the channel today feature cameras that could be used to identify people, emotions, health (e.g., anomalies in movement) and much more. How might a home-automation system respond?

At the same time, many of our products include microphones that could be used to detect if someone falls, if a resident yells help, if an occupant is distressed, or if an assault is occurring or likely to occur.

Evans will expose the industry to some new ways of thinking about the (really) smart home.

Scarborough Futurist Theatre campaigners begin legal battle – The Stage

Posted: at 11:17 pm

Campaigners fighting to save Scarborough's Futurist Theatre have issued legal proceedings seeking a judicial review of the council's decision to demolish the venue.

The Save the Futurist campaign group has begun proceedings against Scarborough Borough Council in an attempt to stop plans to pull the building down.

The campaign has employed a team of solicitors to help it try and overturn the decision, made by Scarborough council in January.

The group said: "This action is costly but has had to be taken in an attempt to stop demolition of the Futurist Theatre. The legal fight has only just begun... There is now a concrete focus to rally around and this is the best chance that our local, national and international supporters have to do something real and practical to save the Futurist."

The campaigners are also fundraising in order to continue legal proceedings.

The Theatres Trust has supported the group's latest efforts, emphasising that a refurbished Futurist could play a significant role in bringing live entertainment and events to the town.

"We have seen the value that the local community places in the Futurist and advocate ensuring that the viability of the theatre is fully considered before any final decision on the demolition of the building is taken.

Following the council's decision earlier this year to demolish the former theatre which has been derelict since 2014 the campaign attempted to get the building listed in order to stave off demolition. However, the application was rejected.

In order to take the action theSave The Futurist group has been required to become a legal entity and is now Save The Futurist Theatre (Scarborough) Ltd.

This action is costly but has had to be taken in an attempt to stop demolition of The Futurist Theatre. The legal fight has only just begun. We are going to need financial support to continue the action and maximise the chance of changing the mind of the Council. There is now a concrete focus to rally around and this is the best chance that our local, national and international supporters have to do something real and practical to save the Futurist. A little bit of money given by a lot of members of the worldwide Futurist family is what we need.

Why you should hire a futurist – Benefits Canada

Sara Tatelman|April 11, 2017

Forget crystal balls, tarot cards and tea leaves. Fortune-telling has no place at a futurists desk.

Were not in the business of predicting the future, says Laura Schlehuber, a futurist and a manager at consulting firm Kalypso LP in Houston. But we do like to question our assumptions and prepare for alternatives.

While organizations consult with futurists on everything from technology to climate change, research on the future of work dominates the field, says Schlehuber. Thats because employment is rapidly evolving with the rise of the gig economy and the decline of North American manufacturing jobs. Its just going to get more disruptive, she notes.

Read: New normal of workplace change affects absence, well-being

For futurists, a key role is to help plot the advantages and challenges of the various scenarios for organizations looking to stay ahead of the curve. In terms of bridging employees to retirement, for example, you can spin out different stories about different possible relationships they could have with the person in the future and what the cost benefit would be to the company, says Katherine Green, a futurist and the president of Futures at Work in Chevy Chase, Md.

For instance, a worker could return as a full-time consultant immediately after they retire, work for a few weeks during the busy season or simply be available to answer questions via email or app as part of a brain trust.

Some Canadian organizations have, in fact, retained the services of a futurist. In 2015, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra hired a futurist on a six-month contract to explore the future of listening and how its audience is changing. While the futurist is no longer working with the organization on a daily basis, permanent employees in the marketing and fundraising departments are adopting some of his principles, says David Postill, vice-president of marketing. For example, after the futurist highlighted the growing interest in the link between music and health care, the orchestra performed a concert benefitting the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and raised $50,000.

Everyones a futurist

Preparing for the future involves not just being aware of likely changes but also managing them as they happen. For Morneau Shepell Ltd.s Paula Allen, thinking like a futurist needs to be more of a core competency for managers. Disruptive technology and new business models will affect company structure, which in turn will have an impact on employee well-being.

You can have the best-laid plans in the world, in terms of what your business objectives are, but if your employees are floundering as a result of the fact that theyre going through the change, you wont achieve what you hoped to, says Allen, vice-president of research and integrative solutions at Morneau Shepell.

Read: Why you should hire a change management specialist

Adopting a futurists mindset can be important for a range of human resource issues. Schlehuber, for example, predicts hiring practices will change radically in the future as theyll increasingly involve using information beyond the resum, such as a candidates tweets. Employers may eventually skip hiring humans for jobs all together. Schlehuber points to McCann Erickson Japan Inc., an advertising agency that appointed a robot as its creative director in March 2016. HR is going to have to figure out, is a human best suited for this role? Is artificial intelligence best suited for this role? she says.

What does succession planning look like for an AI? she adds.

Read: Why you should hire a chief freelance officer

And as businesses face rapid change, one critical business decision has to be how you communicate with your employees, says Allen. She points to studies that link positive culture with improved employee performance and well-being during significant change.

If you dont pay attention to how people adapt to change and how they support employees with resources, with manager training, with attention to their culture, the organizations arent going to be that successful in the change.

Wednesday, 12 April 2017 | Staff Reporter comments

At LPMA 2017, futurist Chris Rolls will present for the first time the results of 12 months of research onthe future of the Australian and global real estate industries.

Mr Rolls says he has spent the last year conducting interviews withleaders in the real estate industry including venture capitalists and keytech disruptors.

Mr Rolls,a managing director of Australias first real estate industry venture capital fund, said many people are not aware that$1.7 billion was invested in real estate technology in 2015 alone.

The sole purpose of which [was] to disrupt real estate industry around the world, he said.

Now, while most of that money has been invested in places like Europe and the US, the first of those low-cost disrupters has already come to Australia.

During his presentation atLPMA 2017 Mr Rolls will discuss issues pertinent to the industry today.

Is tech going to kill the industry like Uber has killed taxis or will artificial intelligence replace property managers? All of those pressing questions.

Mr Rolls will be joined by other speakers, including author and marketing consultant Amanda Stevens, Texan Brad Larson and property management expert Vasili Hadzellis.

Ms Stevens session will focus on helping property managers connect beyond the superficial level, while Mr Larson will be talking about his fast-growing property business Larsen Properties and how property management fits in with its business model. What Does the Launch of a $300 Sneaker Mean for Under Armour … – nwitimes.com

Posted: April 7, 2017 at 8:28 pm

Under Armour(NYSE: UAA) (NYSE: UA) recently launched a limited-edition shoe that represents some important steps for its footwear strategy. The Architech Futurist sneaker features a 3D-printed heal section that's said to provide a better quality of support. It also retails at $300 -- making it the company's most expensive shoe ever.

The footwear and apparel retailer is making a bigger push into premium product offerings, and the Futurist shoe looks to be a testing ground for the company on multiple fronts. It's already been a hit from a marketing perspective and generated plenty of media coverage, and it might signal the emergence of a useful new manufacturing technology, however the broader push into high-end could be complicated by Under Armour's recent signings with discount retailers.

Under Armour made its limited-edition Architech Futurist sneaker available on March 30, and the shoe's initial production run quickly sold out. Exactly how many pairs hit the market is unclear, but investors probably shouldn't count on the new sneaker to have a big impact on the company's sales this year.

The shoe is only available through Under Armour's website and a small number of the company's branded retail outlets for the time being, so sales volume will likely remain small. Rather than being a big revenue driver, the Futurist will probably be more meaningful as a branding tool that reinforces the notion of Under Armour as a premium, high-tech brand.

It could also serve as a testing ground for integrating 3D-printing into larger production runs. The Futurist is the second shoe in the Architech line and the second shoe from the company to feature a 3D-printed heel.Making the 3D-printed section of the shoe reportedly takes a full day, and the application of the technology for footwear and apparel is still in its infancy.

In a move that resembles Nike's (NYSE: NKE) strategy for some of its limited-edition sneaker releases, Under Armour is aiming to create a sense of excitement around its 3D-printed Architech shoes that extends to the rest of the brand. Scarcity drives interest among sneaker enthusiasts, and demand for premium and rare shoes can create a halo effect for other products in the brand line.

Under Armour styles itself as a clothing company with a heavy technology component, and CEO Kevin Plank believes in a "What does it do?" approach to making footwear and apparel. Innovation is a core part of the company's identity and brand appeal, and maintaining a high-tech, cutting-edge product line is important for its performance -- particularly as the company eyes becoming a major player in the unfolding wearable technology space and tries to command higher prices for premium products.

Under Armour Sportswear Draft Day Rowing Blazer, which retails through the company's website at $219; Image source: Under Armour.

In September 2016, the company launched Under Armour Sportswear (UAS) -- an offshoot brand that specializes in high-fashion clothing. Under the UAS brand, the company sells high-end shoes, blazers, pants, shirts, and even a $1,500 trench coat.

Happening concurrently with the push into premium, Under Armour has recently signed deals with discount retailers DSWand Kohls. While pushing into new distribution channels is seemingly a win for the Under Armour, it's possible that these moves could devalue the brand and work against the company's efforts to move upmarket.

Here's Kevin Plank on the importance that succeeding with high-end products has for the company, and how this plays with the company's presence in discount retailers:

We learned that our segmentation strategy could be sharper, that being premium at every price point and having the right product for the right consumer at the right time is the price of admission. And we learned that when we play in a discounted environment, we can drive volume, and win, but the role both we and our retailers expect us to play is as a premium, full-price brand.

Under Armour is under pressure after disappointing sales results have thrown some kinks in the company's growth story. Domestic sales growth lagged in the last quarter, and overall sales growth came in at 12% when previous guidance called for roughly 20% growth. With the company now guiding for sales growth between 11% and 12% for the current fiscal year, there are concerns that its brand appeal could be softening. If momentum is weakening, too much presence in discount retailers could worsen unfavorable trends.

Last year, Nike's LeBron 13 sneakers launched at $200, while Under Armour's Curry 2 shoes hit shelves at $130. With NBA stars LeBron James and Stephen Curry at similar levels of popularity, much of the pricing disparity between their respective sneakers likely comes down to the strength of the underlying brands.

While premium offerings like the Architech Futurist shoes and the Under Armour Sportswear line might become meaningful sales contributors, they could potentially have an even bigger impact by raising the perceived value of the Under Armour brand and allowing the company to command higher prices from its core product releases.

Elon Musk’s revolt against futurist-led A.I. Apocalypse – TRUNEWS

Posted: April 2, 2017 at 7:28 am

March 27, 2017

On Sunday Vanity Fair published a detailed summary of SpaceX CEO Elon Musks reservations against Artificial Intelligence

(VERO BEACH, FLA) In the 7,900 word manifesto titled Elon Musks Billion-Dollar Crusade to Stop the A.I. Apocalypse Vanity Fairs Maureen Dowd interviewed the leading figures of Silicon Valley, including Demis Hassabis, Peter Thiel, and Sam Altman, to decipher why fellow futurist Elon Musk is no fan of his colleagues goal of ubiquitously connected robotic artificial intelligence.

The full manuscript is available here, these are notable nuggets from the piece:

The way to escape human obsolescence, in the end, may be by having some sort of merger of biological intelligence and machine intelligence. Were already cyborgs. Your phone and your computer are extensions of you, but the interface is through finger movements or speech, which are very slow. For a meaningful partial-brain interface, I think were roughly four or five years away.

At the 2017 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, TRUNEWS host Rick Wiles was told by keynote speakers that the integration of computers into human beings is a goal being pursed by the same architects behind the implementation of an Artificially Intelligent (AI) ubiquitously connectedGlobal Brain.

On the March 16th and 17th editions of TRUNEWS, host Rick Wiles described what he was told about the development of a Global Brain and how the Christians today must learn to evangelize in this coming technocracy.

Under Armour upgrades its 3D-printed shoe with ArchiTech Futurist – Digital Trends

Why it matters to you

3D-printed shoes are getting better with each model and the ArchiTech Futurist is part of a technological movement.

Year after year, 3D-printing technology is getting better. There are more products that can be printed andthe machines have been refined to the point that many printed objects dont look printed. Shoes are the latest endeavor across the biggest names in athletics and Under Armour released its latest model.

The ArchiTech Futurist is an updated version of the companys ArchiTech running shoe it released in 2016. This time, the technology is back in a high-top variant. With a 3D-printed midsole made from a lattice network, this shoe offers plenty of stability and cushion.

More:Awesome Tech You Cant Buy Yet: 3D printed violins, biometric wallets, and more

Those intertwined loops are what provide the shoe with its cushioning and support. Overtop that is a flat outsole that features different density foams for a smoother feel. What sets this shoe apart from last years model is how it fits. The Futurist uses a compression lace system with a neoprene shroud and a zipper. Just like a compression sleeve, it conforms to each users foot. This provides lockdown and support witha tailored and seamless fit.

Additionally, the shoe takes advantage of Under Armours SpeedForm. This upper maintains the seamless look and locks the heel into the shoe. Whether the user is lifting, training, or running, the shoe will maintain a seamless fit with the heel. This is a shoedesigned for superior fit and comfort with a modern silhouette.

Due to the complexity of the tendrils, each shoe takes a full day of printing. Just like the ArchiTech before it, the Futurist launched with a very limited release at a retail price of $300. While the shoe is currently sold out, those who are interested are encouraged to sign up for email notifications about availability.
