The Cybertruck Is Now the Cheapest Tesla – Futurism
Posted: October 7, 2021 at 4:03 pm
"I love this simulation."Cheapest Tesla
Tesla recently increased the price of its Model 3 and Model Y, with prices starting at a respective $54,990 and $41,990 before incentives.
Strangely enough, that makes the entry level Cybertruck, a much bigger vehicle starting at $39,990, the cheapest Tesla customers can order today, as Teslarati points out. Even the Model 3 Standard Range Plus variant, which is the second cheapest vehicle in the lineup, starts at $42,000 now.
Cybertruck is officially the cheapest Tesla you can buy, one Twitter user commented. I love this simulation.
Its unclear if Tesla is still planning on revise the pricing for the much-delayed pickup truck. Last month, Tesla CEO Elon Musk confirmed that the rollout was going to be delayed to late 2022, a disappointment for those who preordered it for a $100 deposit almost two years ago.
Tesla has also been struggling to keep up production of its new 4680 battery cells, which will end up powering the Cybertruck, according to a July update.
Musksaid during thecompanys second-quarter earnings call in Julythat each truck could literally cost a million dollars a piece or more. Theres a reason why you do things at volume production, which is to get the economies of scale that get the cost down.
So whether that $39,990 entry-level price will stick once the first Cybertrucks are delivered to customers remains to be seen.

Blue Origin Employees Say They Don’t Think Its Rocket Is Safe, Wouldn’t Ride In It – Futurism
Posted: October 5, 2021 at 4:21 am
"Blue Origin has been lucky that nothing has happened so far."Hard Pass
A small cohort of current and former employees of Blue Origin, Jeff Bezoss spaceflight company, recently penned an article questioning the companys commitment to safety.
We wrote yesterday about the employees claims that Blue Origin harbors a shockingly sexist work culture.Another alarming takeaway from the letter, though, comes from a completely different direction, claiming that the company also has a poor safety culture around its rockets. The problems are so bad that the authors say they wouldnt feel safe riding in a Blue Origin rocket, given the chance.
Many of us have spent our careers dreaming of helping to launch a crewed rocket into space and seeing it safely touch back down on Earth, the employees wrote. But when Jeff Bezos flew to space this July, we did not share his elation. Instead, many of us watched with an overwhelming sense of unease. Some of us couldnt bear to watch at all.
Notably, the authors dont list any single safety issue with Blue Origins New Shepard rocket. Instead, they describe a work culture in which overstretched teams had more and more work piled onto them without reasonable increases in personnel or budget.
That culture, coupled with a lack of overarching safety regulations for the nascent commercial spaceflight industry, they argue, forced the staff to prioritize speed over safety, increasing the chances that safety issues flew under the radar.
Blue Origin has been lucky that nothing has happened so far, one anonymous engineer contributed to the article. Many of this essays authors say they would not fly on a Blue Origin vehicle. And no wonder we have all seen how often teams are stretched beyond reasonable limits.

Company Claims Pill Cuts Risk of Dying of COVID-19 in Half – Futurism
Posted: at 4:21 am
Pharmaceutical company Merck claims its new COVID-19 pill, called molnupiravir, can reduce the risk of hospitalization and even death from the coronavirus by half, according to newly announced Phase III clinical trial results.
The company is now applying for Emergency Use Authorization from the US Food and Drug Administration.
Its a promising development for new treatments against severe cases of COVID-19 but the news should also serve as a reminder that getting vaccinated is by far the best preventative step, regardless of the availability of effective treatments.
COVID remains a highly dangerous disease. A staggering 1 in 500 Americans have now died from it.
In the trials, Merck tested the drug on participants who recently tested positive for COVID and who also had at least one additional risk factor including obesity, diabetes, heart disease or being above the age of 60.
After 29 days, 53 out of 377 participants who received the placebo were hospitalized after contracting the coronavirus. Eight of the placebo group died.
Only 28 out of 385 participants who received the drug, in contrast, were hospitalized. None of them died.
Promisingly, Merck also noted that its drug worked just as well against dangerous new strains of the virus, including the widespread delta variant.
If granted authorization, the pill would be the third antiviral drug approved by the FDA to treat COVID. Remdesivir, an injection, has also proven to be effective at staving off serious cases of COVID-19. Monoclonal antibody therapy has also shown promise.
All those treatments, though, are very expensive. According to The New York Times, a five day course of molnupiravir currently costs about $700 per patient. Two doses of the Pfizer vaccine,in contrast, cost just $39 and are available for free at locations across the United States and in many other countries worldwide.
While theres meaningful progress toward developing effective treatments for COVID, one simple fact remains: those who are unvaccinated are far more likely eleven times to be hospitalized.
Granted, breakthrough infections do happen, albeit quite infrequently. But at the end of the day, the vaccine is a great way to stay safe.

Doctors Alarmed by Man Who Quit Drinking and Started Swallowing Metal Nails and Screws – Futurism
Posted: at 4:21 am
Doctors in Lithuania recently cut open a patients stomach so that they could safely remove the roughly two-and-a-half pounds of miscellaneous metal objects that he had swallowed over the course of a month.
As the story goes, the man had quit drinking, but for one reason or another replaced it with an even more destructive vice, Agence France-Presse reports. Its a bizarre case, but the doctors say that the man recovered and was resting in stable condition following the procedure.
If youre not feeling too squeamish, feel free to check out the Lithuanian-language publication LRT, which published an image of the surgical tray full of all the nails, screws, nuts, and other metal bits that the man had swallowed.
Weve never seen anything like it, head surgeon Algirdas Slepavicius told AFP.
The doctors told LRT that the surgery itself was fairly straightforward and that patients coming in after swallowing various objects all the time. But this particular surgery took a long time about three hours because of the sheer number of objects the man consumed. The doctors were also slowed down by the fact that they needed to frequently take and retake x-rays to ensure they found all of the small metal bits, which LRT reports ranged in size from two millimeters to an alarming 10 centimeters.
They also had to make sure that the sharp metal hadnt pierced through the wall of his stomach, but that didnt seem to be the case. Apparently the man hasnt said much, according to LRT, but hes currently under psychological care to try and figure out where his metal-eating habit came from and why.

Creators of Amazon’s New Robot Secretly Admitted It’s "Terrible" – Futurism
Posted: at 4:21 am
According to developer documents and video meeting recordings obtained by Vice, the engineers behind Amazons new $999 robot arent thrilled with the finished product.
The e-retailer recently announced the Astro, a stalkerish two-wheeled robot designed to keep track of everything you do, and even spy on anybody unlucky enough to enter your home.
Even if you sign on to that troubling premise, the bots developers apparently werent happy with the final product.
Astro is terrible and will almost certainly throw itself down a flight of stairs if presented the opportunity, an unnamed developer said, as quoted by Vice. The person detection is unreliable at best, making the in-home security proposition laughable.
The device feels fragile for something with an absurd cost, the developer added.
Vices source also criticized the devices marketing as an accessibility device, telling the outlet that its at best, absurdist nonsense and marketing and, at worst, potentially dangerous for anyone whod actually rely on it for accessibility purposes.
A second source who also worked on the project called it a disaster thats not ready for release, noting that they break themselves and will almost certainly fall down stairs in real world users homes.
Senior PR manager Kristy Schmidt called the allegations simply inaccurate, telling Vice that the robot went through rigorous testing on both quality and safety, including tens of thousands of hours of testing with beta participants.
Its almost poetic: a highly invasive robot hellbent on throwing itself down a flight of stairs.
Astro represents the kind of future weve been warning about for all these years: a largely autonomous robot actively spying on strangers, developed by a company that has built its success on collecting every bit of information it can glean from its customers.
Fortunately, it isnt likely to fly off the shelves given its hefty price tag.

New AR Glasses Are for Streaming Video and Ignoring the Real World – Futurism
Posted: at 4:21 am
The Nreal glasses don't have any outward-facing cameras.Picture-in-Picture
The augmented reality developer Nreal just announced a new, cheaper model of its AR glasses, which its calling the Nreal Air.
But unlike previous Nreal models, and just about every other mixed reality headset out there, the new system will focus solely on streaming video or displaying other media. As The Verge notes, the Nreal Air will be missing the components, like outward-facing cameras or hand-tracking tech, that would help a wearer actually interact with the world around them while using AR. Its an interesting move using AR to turn inward and binge shows or go down YouTube rabbit holes that contrasts against other developers moves to build metaverses that blur the line between virtual and tangible realities.
Because hand controls wont work, users will need to control the Nreal Air which a spokesperson told The Verge will cost a fraction of the Nreal Lights $600 pricetag through a smartphone app. Using a phone instead of actually being able to reach out and touch parts of the AR display with your hands may break some of the immersion, but that fits in with the companys goal of building a more compact, stripped-down, and especially more affordable version of AR made for watching videos.
Consumers today are seeking lighter, but longer lasting AR glasses exclusively for streaming media and working from home, Nreal founder Chi Xu said in a statement provided to The Verge.
Plus, theres the added bonus of not creeping out every single person you walk past. Without external cameras on your glasses something Facebook recently unveiled with its creepy new covert surveillance Ray-Bans AR users can go about their days without getting weird looks from strangers wondering if theyre being filmed.

Every Mars Rover Is About To Go Into Safe Mode – Futurism

That pesky Sun is getting in the way of NASA's research.Laying Low
NASA and the China National Space Administration (CNSA), the only two space agencies with robotic rovers currently exploring and studying Mars, are both being forced to put their research on hold for a little while.
The problem? The Sun is literally getting in the way. A period called Mars solar conjunction, in which the Sun passes in between the two planets, is expected to begin next week on October 2, according to a NASA announcement. While its there, the space agencies decided that it would be safest to take a break and not beam any new commands to their various Mars rovers.
NASA engineers are concerned that the Suns ionizing rays could interfere with any instructions that engineers send to their respective Mars rovers, potentially corrupting the signals and prompting unexpected, possibly dangerous behavior from the off-world robots. Therefore, NASA wont send any new instructions to their rovers between October 2 and 16, according to the agencys announcement.
Similarly, the CNSA told the Chinese state-run news outlet Global Times that its Tianwen-1 space probe and Zhurong rover will pause their work and enter safe mode during the transit.
But just because the rovers arent getting any new instructions doesnt mean theyre stopping altogether.
Though our Mars missions wont be as active these next few weeks, theyll still let us know their state of health, the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratorys Mars Relay Network manager, Roy Gladden, said in the NASA announcement. Each mission has been given some homework to do until they hear from us again.
For instance, the Perseverance and Curiosity rovers will continue to record the weather on Mars, though several of their instruments will be shut off. Meanwhile, the InSight lander will continue to detect marsquakes, and NASAs Mars orbiters will continue to act as relay stations between Earth and the rovers whenever possible.

Princess Nokia on "Boys Are From Mars" With Yung Baby Tate – PAPER – Papermag
Posted: at 4:21 am
Princess Nokia knows her worth, and she wants others to know theirs, too. The multi-hyphenate New York City phenom's latest single, "Boys Are From Mars," isn't just a kiss-off to fuckboys who can't keep up it's an audacious ode to self-love and self-esteem.
Featuring a girl-power assist by rising rapper Yung Baby Tate, "Boys Are From Mars" is a cinematic anthem based on the old intergalactic adage that "boys are from Mars, girls are from Venus." Over a bouncy, mid-tempo hip-hop-pop hybrid soundscape, Princess Nokia and Yung Baby Tate take turns tearing down the tragic trappings of toxic masculinity, reminding listeners that "just 'cause his dick good, don't mean good, he will have you stressin'."
But Princess Nokia is more than familiar with the challenges and rewards that come with refusing to compromise, both as a spiritual young woman who exists in a not-so-nurturing patriarchal society and as an unhindered artist who operates in a do-or-die industry.
While many musicians, especially women of color, tend to get pigeonholed into certain genres or labels, Princess Nokia who identifies as an afro-indigenious queer woman has spent the past decade-plus brushing off any pressures to fit into a single category or style. She's experimented with D'n'B and trip-hop (2014's Metallic Butterfly); funk and soul (2015's Honeysuckle); trap and old school hip-hop (2017's 1992 Deluxe); emo and pop-punk (2018's A Girl Cried Red); and the list goes on.
Resisting the make-it-quick-at-all-costs allure of modern hustle culture, she's taken the time to truly discover herself; to evolve with herself, musically and energetically; and to embrace all the beautifully disparate, yet harmonious elements of her identity that make her who she is, including all her interests and passions, from photography to acting. Because Princess Nokia has never been just one thing, and she's certainly not going to compromise any parts of herself for anybody.
Hot on the heels of the release of "Boys Are From Mars," PAPER caught up with Princess Nokia to talk about her current '70s sci-fi influences, her desire to try her hand at "folk indie-rock like Jewel," and landing her biggest hit to date with TikTok's viral smash "I Like Him."
Where did the idea for "Boys Are From Mars" originally spring from?
I wrote the song very quickly one day when I was thinking about an experience of mine where I had a partner, a person in my life, who actively pursued me for a long time. I basically ignored them the whole time, and then when I finally relented to their chase, they switched up on me. They didn't want to be with me any more! And I was like, "Men are from Mars, women are from Venus." So I used that experience the unrequited love, the chase, confusion afterward as inspiration.
On Instagram, you shared a message about the importance of not letting anyone make you guess your worth. The track also speaks to setting boundaries. What do you hope girls will take away from this song?
I wrote the song as a guidebook for young women, and people in general, to actively use discipline, self-empowerment, and boundaries as a way to remove people from their lives who don't serve them or their higher purpose. It's very easy to keep toxic patterns and to actively allow, specifically men, to gaslight you and make you believe your worth is lower than you're accustomed to; to make you believe that your basic needs and desires and wants are too much. I want young women to use this as a reminder that in any instance, if someone is not respecting you or treating you equally or how you should be treated, you should take it very seriously and run in the other direction.
Visually, the lyric video and imagery appear to nod to Barbarella and retro-futurism. What were your visual frames of reference for this track?
My visual frame of reference was actually '70s sci-fi films such as Star Wars by George Lucas, and Barbarella starring Jane Fonda, which I grew up watching on VHS from the rental store. Those movies and film references were very impactful to my life and helped me understand art history and costume design. For this project, you could say [it was inspired by the] '70s, or some people might say, "This looks so futuristic, but it also looks so vintage!" That's exactly what it is. It's Star Wars, it's Barbarella, it's prehistoric futurism. It's from a time when the '70s were recreating futurism, that's why it looks vintage yet futuristic. I love playing with period pieces and doing cosplay and creating a fantasy world that I really know a lot about.
Will there be a music video?
I believe so! Me and Tate both have really wild schedules right now I'm literally in the middle of a tour and several projects. But it would be fantastic, so hopefully there will be a video for the song. We'll just have to wait until we're both free.
You've worked on some really cool collaborations over the years, from Ashnikko to Silverstein. What was the chemistry like with Yung Baby Tate?
I really loved it. She was fantastic, and she's really talented. I'm a fan of hers; she happens to be one of my favorite contemporary female artists out right now, so it was a joy working together. We got along really well.
Musically, you've experimented with so many vibes and genres: emo, D'n'B, trip-hop, soul, hip-hop, pop... Are there any subgenres or musical frames of reference still on your to-do list?
I would love to get into Latin music more. I only ever did one Spanish song, back when I was not a fluent Spanish speaker. And I would love to [do it again] now that I actually have the confidence to do Latin music; now that I am an actual fluent Spanish speaker, because that wasn't the case before. I made "Corazn en Afrika" in 2014 when I was still relatively not a Spanish speaker, and now I'm a new fluent person. I think I could just take it on a lot better. But the thing is, because it's not my natural second language, I speak it grammatically incorrectly sometimes. So when I do make Spanish songs in the studio, I have trouble with writing and grammar and it takes a really long time for me to correct things. But yeah, definitely more Latin music. I also want to do country music because I love country music so much. And I definitely want to try folk indie-rock like Jewel. I just want to sing like Jewel!
Your 2020 single "I Like Him" blew up on TikTok and recently went RIAA-certified Gold, marking one of your biggest hits to date. How did you react when you found out? And why do you think that track has popped off so much?
To be honest with you, my response was very emotional and very vulnerable. I'm an orphan child from the inner cities of New York City. I had a very, very harsh upbringing and experienced a lot of emotional trauma and abuse. I think about my origin story a lot, and I don't mean to bring it up as like, "Oh my God, I come from such a dark place..." It's just that this opportunity for someone with my circumstances, who could be suffering a lot in life because of trauma, it's really miraculous to me. Looking at where I've been and where I've gone, it means so much to me and it makes me emotional because I really think about people like myself who share the same storyline as me, who are still fighting for liberation and still fighting for their survival and still fighting against impoverishment, trauma, and systemic oppression. I think, "Wow, one of us made it, one of us did something." That's really wild.
So that's why I take so much pride in it, because I'm not an industry person. I didn't come into this whole thing trying to make a hit. It just happened so organically, beautifully, naturally. And I think it just sold that many units because it really is a hit song. It came from my head, and I wrote it. I think it's so wild that my imagination has taken me to all these unique places. There was no, "Oh, she started working with this person," or, "It happened when she got signed!" It was a natural progression of my journey and how I've grown up. It's really just so special and funny and unique. I find myself lucky at all times.
Having grown up in New York City, and having that be a huge part of your heart and soul and identity, what do you make of people who claim that "NYC is dead," especially amid the pandemic?
It's ignorant. And also I'm like, they must not be looking in the right places! I can tell you single-handedly that New York is not dead. In the middle of the pandemic, you know where I was? At the rave behind the IKEA in Brooklyn with my friends. New York is very much alive and thriving. The rave scene has never been crazier. The youth culture is vibrant. The kids are in the park drinking 40s, smoking weed, skating, hanging out and pulling looks. They are creating a new subculture for New York City. They're keeping it alive. I go to the art shows. I go to the galleries. I go to the under-the-bridge hangouts. I be busy, but the girls are having fun! So no, New York is not dead. New York is far from dead. My best friend in LA is like, "How do you guys just do it so freely?" I'm like, "Yeah, there's really nothing to it." That's the soulfulness of New York City. It's not premeditated, it's not to look cool. It just is cool. We don't try hard here.
Speaking of New York City, what sparked your youth culture and street fashion photography project, After School Special?
It's how I perceive the storytelling and the beauty around me. I've always had an eye for creative direction and cinematography, and taking pictures is a secondary talent for me. I'm a musician. I'm a music director. I'm a writer. I'm a poet. I'm a songwriter. And I'm a photographer. I have many strengths and photography is one of them, and for the last few years I've been exercising that as a personal hobby, and as an artistic experience with After School Special. It's something I wanted to dedicate to what I believe is so beautiful and unique. I'm trying to capture that.
You recently appeared in Kacey Musgraves' "Simple Times" video alongside Victoria Pedretti and Symone. What was your favorite part of shooting the video?
My favorite part was meeting Symone and Victoria, because I had known Kacey before that. I really enjoyed meeting Kacey's team members and our co-stars. And I loved being on stage with Kacey, who is a very, very sweet artist friend of mine, and who I'm a huge fan of. I'm an actual, serious Kacey Musgraves fan. Her music means a lot to me, so the fact that I have the privilege and opportunity to have a beautiful relationship with someone who I admire so much and is so important to me is very special. We had a lot of fun.
I know you're not one to compromise artistically, and you've been independent for the greater part of your career, but you recently signed to your first major label: Arista Records. How are you navigating that opportunity?
Things have been wonderful for me. I like my team a lot, we get along very well. I have always made sure to set boundaries and create environments and spaces where I feel respected and listened to and understood. Thankfully, that has continued even with my major label experience, so it's been a positive experience for me all around. And I always have the final say.
You're gearing up for a new EP, titled Bloom. What sort of stories can we anticipate to hear on this project?
It's about the evolution of Princess Nokia from this small, underground artist to this crossover pop girl. It's kinda cool. I have literally put out so many projects; have made so many different types of music; have created a huge lane for myself considering my origin and foundations; and have stayed current with the times and have still been able to find myself creating. It tells a coming-of-age story about an underdog who becomes her own fairy tale princess.

Futurist Herefordshire home praised by experts fails to impress locals – Hereford Times
Posted: at 4:21 am
A futuristic family home in the Herefordshire countryside whose design has delighted experts has left some locals unimpressed.
The Flow House would have been half-submerged in a south-facing hillside near the village Ullingswick, between Bromyard and Hereford.
This, combined with a heating and power system, described as the first of its kind in the UK, would have enabled it to be largely self-sufficient in power.
A range of measures would have boosted biodiversity in the surrounding landscape, while a new traditional perry pear orchard would have been created.
National planning policy requires new individual homes in the countryside to be of truly outstanding design.
Matt Tomkins, agent for the applicant, a local businessman, said the design had indeed been judged outstanding by an design review panel of independent experts, whose findings were not contested by council officers.
RELATED STORIES:
But summarising local objections, Ocle Pychard group parish council chairman Giles Blackmore said: We are concerned about the impact on the landscape.
Its an intrusive building whose modernist design is not in keeping with our rural location.
Agreeing, local councillor Jonathan Lester said: Its sheer scale means it cannot respect the character of adjoining listed and historic developments.
Noting the many reservations expressed in the expert panels report, Coun Jeremy Milln warned it would be seen as an eyesore forever after.
However planning committee vice-chair Coun Alan Seldon called it an exceptional design which I would love to see built.
The planning committee voted seven to three to refuse the proposal.

There’s a Hole in the Ozone Layer Bigger Than Antarctica, Scientists Sigh – Futurism

Its now larger than 75 percent of the previous years holes.Looming Problem
Whelp, the hole in the ozone layer is as big as ever.
Scientists with the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service announced that the hole in the ozone layer over the South Pole is now larger than Antarctica, according to a press release from the organization. Researchers say that the hole has grown considerably in the past two weeks, and is currently larger than 75 percent of holes in the ozone layer since 1979.
[The hole] seems pretty similar to last years, which also wasnt really exceptional until early September, but then turned into one of the largest and longest-lasting ozone holes in our data record later in the season, said Copernicus director Vincent-Henri Peuch in the press release. Now our forecasts show that this years hole has evolved into a rather larger than usual one.
The ozone layer plays a crucial role in protecting the Earth from the Suns UV radiation, which can harm terrestrial crops and animals. Increased UV light has also been linked to skin cancer and cataracts in humans, according to the US Environmental Protection Agency.
However, the layer has been depleted over the years due to chlorine and bromine atoms in the air that destroy ozone molecules. Each year, when temperatures in the South Pole warm during Antarctic spring, these harmful atoms deplete the layer even more causing an annual opening of the ozone layers hole.
While the hole is as big as ever, Copernicus scientists believe that the layer is recovering due to environmental regulations such as the Montreal Protocol, which began regulation of chlorine and bromine chemicals in 1987. However, they estimate the layer wont completely recover until the 2060s or 2070s, reports CNN.
Until then, we imagine that scientists are a mix of on edge and also tired of having to report on the size of the ozone hole. If only our world governments and big corporations that vastly contribute to climate change could do literally anything about it.
