Brooklyn style: 3 local designers you should know

Posted: September 8, 2014 at 12:41 pm

With New York Fashion Week in full swing, all eyes in the Big Apple are on style.

While most of the action is taking place at Lincoln Center and other venues around Manhattan (It boy Alexander Wang showed at the Brooklyn Navy Yard during Februarys NYFW, but is back in Manhattan this time around), much of the design talent these days is coming out of Brooklyn.

Dont know the names Degen, David Hart and Stanmore yet? Well, you should: Theyre three designers, with very different aesthetics and brands, working out of Kings County and using their borough for inspiration, community and the creation of their collections.

David Harts menswear is truly for the modern gentleman.

My brand is really founded on this idea of nostalgia and modernism and futurism, says the Fort Greene-based designer. I take a lot of references from the past and update them in a new and modern way.

Case in point: His fall/winter 2014/15 collection, which contains a light-blue tuxedo jacket, slim-cut blazers in shades from burgundy to a mottled blue-gray, and a geek-chic cardigan. And, of course, Harts signature ties.

The FIT alum, who cut his teeth working for big names Anna Sui, Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger, began his solo foray with a neckwear line in 2009 (Think cool skinny ties with eye-catching prints made in interesting fabrics not traditional work ties), then expanded to a full menswear range in 2013.

Ive always loved ties, says Hart, 32. They are the one item that men have in their wardrobe that can allow them to express a little bit of their personality.

To create his collection, Hart leans on Brooklyn. He develops and creates his own textiles with small, family-run mills; his ties are all handmade in a Sunset Park factory and many of his vendors are local.

I love Brooklyn, he says. The energy really meshes with my work style and my personality. Before, when I was working in Manhattan, I was always working. Being in Brooklyn, I can separate myself from work because its such a neighborhood here.

SpaceX Successfully Launched The AsiaSat 6 Satellite

Posted: at 2:40 pm

SpaceX Falcon 9 lifts off with the AsiaSat 6 satellite.

Telecommunications company AsiaSat now has a new satellite in orbit, its second in less than two months. Its new satellite, AsiaSat 6, was successfully delivered into orbit by a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket that launched at 1:00am EDT from Cape Canaveral, FL. Contact with the satellite was confirmed about an hour after liftoff.

This launch was originally intended to occur on August 27. However, due to a failure of an experimental SpaceX rocket during a test flight, the launch was delayed. The experimental rocket apparently malfunctioned because of a sensor error. The company stated that the same error wasnt likely to occur in its regular Falcon 9 rocket, but wanted to triple-check its systems to be certain.

AsiaSat 6 is based on the Space Systems/Loral 1300 platform. The communications satellite is equpped with 28 C-band transponders. These will be delivering video and broadband signals to AsiaSats customers throughout the Asia-Pacific region. The anticipated life of the satellite will be about 15 years.

SpaceX has one more launch this month. On September 19, its Dragon capsule will be launched from a Falcon 9 on its way to the International Space Station.

China Has Two New Experimental Satellites In Orbit

Posted: at 2:40 am

The Chinese space agency launched two new satellites into orbit at 8:15am Beijing time on Thursday, August 4. The two satellites were carried by a Long March 2D rocket, which lifted off from theJiuquan Satellite Launch Center.

The two satellites are both used in different experimental capacities. One of them, theLing Qiao, is a communications satellite. According to a report fromXinhua, the Ling Qiao is a smart satellite being used for multimedia telecommunications experiments.

The second satellite is theChuangxin-1-04. This is the fourth a series of satellites built by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the first of which was launched in 2003. Its being used to collect information about natural disasters, weather, and other types of information.

Bill Ostrove, a space industry analyst for Forecast International, noted that this launch marks a ramping up of rocket launches by China this year after a slow start.

Through the first half of the year, only one launch was conducted when a Long March 2C carried the Shijian 11-06 into orbit in March, Ostrove wrote. However, in the second half of the year, China has picked up the pace. Two launches were conducted in August, and now another launch took place in early September. China will likely conduct another few launches before year-end.
