Guests channel Italian futurism at annual Halloween bash

Posted: at 5:43 pm

There was only one party to where you could see silver body-suited, platform-wearing cyborgs dancing to Daft Punk next to Vogues Hamish Bowles in an angular pink Thom Browne jacket, Joan Smalls in full Kill Bill regalia and Bergdorf Goodmans Linda Fargo as a futuristic Cleopatra.

Allison Sarofim and Stuart Parr threw their annual Halloween party Saturday at their West Village townhouse and challenged their fashionable friends to come clad in this years theme of Italian Futurism.

Harry and Peter Brant came as silvery Space Oddity-inspired men, hotelier Andr Balasz donned a white wig, Warners Rob Wiesenthal in black overalls electrified by luminous strip lights, socialite Dori Cooperman channeled Barbarella while society photographer Patrick McMullan snapped away, dressed as an angel in a white suit, feathered wings and halo, while muscled waiters wearing only white underpants passed around potent cocktails.

Guests were wowed by a show of laser-firing futuristic power rangers shooting dry ice, plus fire and art performances put on by Flambeaux Fire and AHz concepts.

Melanie Griffith mingled with actress Samantha Mathis, Angela Janklow, artist Anh Duong, stylist Carlos Mota, Jamie Tisch and Joyce and John Varvatos, who came in a black, rubbery Batman-style outfit and disappeared into the night at 2 a.m. with a flourish of his black cape.

Next Wave #608: FEMME

Posted: at 5:43 pm

FEMMEcan be considered many things: an alluring fatale with pink hair, a nonchalant fashion icon with chandelier earrings, and a burgeoning popstress. But not in the contrived sense her retro futurism aesthetic is authentic. It takes a cerebral mind to hark back to one of the most influential eras in music. Theres a lot of charm in 60s girl-groups thats very inspiring. Theres something very human about it, its very accessible.

Born Laura Bettinson, the singer, songwriter, producer and video director is probably out for world domination from her south London base, and rightfully so. Shes riding high (pun intended) on the coattails of her most recent single, High, which got an exclusive debut on Vogues website, and after closing her European shows shes heading overseas to smash the US by opening for Charli XCX.

The thing that stands out most with Bettinson, though, is that shes not afraid to be pop. Shell indulge her fans with Andy Warhol-like music videos (Fever Boy), and break out into a one-two step both on and off the stage.

The previous shows [in the UK] were full of teenage girls who, I dont know if theyve been to previous shows, or they watched the videos online, but they were doing the dances! Its as though shes adding blocks of bright colour to a rather dark musical climate. Im doing this for a laugh. I wake up every morning and Im amazed that I can do what I love like this. Youve gotta be able to laugh at yourself.

For music purists, to be pop can allude, to some, to selling out, despite the fact that many of the worlds greatest, and most gifted music stalwarts were, in fact, pop: Michael Jackson, Prince, Madonna, Debbie Harry, and Lady Gaga.

Pop doesnt have to be stupid. It is pop music that I make and its not absolutely mundane, stupid clickbait. Id like to think its something that will be around a bit longer than that.

Google Executive Breaks Record With Near-Space Skydive

Posted: October 24, 2014 at 6:46 pm

Two years ago this month, Felix Baumgartner broke a record with his near-space skydive in which he broke the sound barrier.

Alan Eustace, a Vice-President of Knowledge at Google Google, just broke it.

The funny thing is, though, is that in a project nearly three years in the making, it wasnt until the last minute that anyone knew he was going to.

As we were watching him go up today, somebody asked us what the record was, Paragon Space Development CEO Grant Anderson told me. We had to look it up! It was cool to break the record, but frankly it was not in the forefront of our minds at all.

Eustace first approached Paragon, which specializes in developing life support equipment for extreme environments, including space, in December of 2011. The goal apart from the fun of the stunt itself was to develop technologies that could be useful for more human exploration of the stratosphere and beyond.

The day of the flight began with a four-hour stint in an oxygen chamber, where Eustace had the nitrogen in his lung and tissues slowly washed out. Next Next up, he was prepared in the space suit, which is similar in design and material to the spacesuits used by astronauts on the International Space Station. (If it looks funny in the photos, thats because the life support system is on the front instead of the back in order to accommodate the parachute.

The spacesuit itself was absolutely necessary at the altitude Eustace flew to, the atmosphere is so thin that a human cant breathe. Also, the pressure is so low that even at the cool temperatures, the fluids in the body will begin to boil

The balloon that took Eustace to the stratosphere was then inflated with helium, and Eustace was hooked up in place to it. Unlike Felix Baumgartner, Eustace wasnt in a capsule. He was directly attached to a module held by the balloon.

Google Invests $542 M in Bizarre Florida Man Promising Virtual Reality

Posted: October 22, 2014 at 1:40 am

Recode tried to warn you over and over that Silicon Valley found love in a hopeless place (Florida). Now it's official. Google announced that it led a $542 million round in Magic Leap, an augmented reality startup run by wackadoo supreme Rony Abovitz.

That's Abovitz in the space suit above giving a talk at TEDxSarasotaapparently the trippiest TEDx of them all.

More than a handful of venture capital and private equity firms also participated in the round, including Obvious Ventures (from Twitter cofounder Ev Williams), Andreessen Horowitz, Kleiner Perkins, and David Petraeus' new hangout, KKR.

All 542 of those millions were handed over before Magic Leap launched a product. But Recode says investors are betting big because they think it could have advantages over leading virtual reality companies like Oculus Rift:

But the thrust is that [Magic Leap] is working on hardware and software to deliver "augmented reality" that adds computer-generated images on top of what you're seeing naturally to create convincing optical illusions. The company's website shows off images of a baby elephant that appears to be hovering above someone's hands and a submarine floating above a city street.

Sources say a key part of Magic Leap's plans involves a wearable device that will track users' eyeballs and project images onto them. We're also told the company intends to use an infrared camera similar to the Microsoft Kinect to create a 3-D understanding of the world around the wearer so the virtual objects can appear to go both in front of and behind things.

This is called "object occlusion," and along with the capability for depth perception, it's supposedly a leg up Magic Leap would have over today's virtual reality players like Oculus VR, which Facebook bought for $2 billion earlier this year.

Who's the Florida fella trying to augment your reality? Abovitz previously cofounded a surgical robotics company, then sold it for $1.65 billion. But he's much stranger than that successful sale might imply. Kevin Roose has filled an entire cabinet with the man's eccentricities:

Abovitz was once a semi-prolific blogger, writing at length about topics as varied as wheatgrass, Saddam Hussein, and vegetarianism. Futurism figures heavily in his writings, which sound a bit like those of a college philosophy major who hit the bong a little too hard.

Des Moines Register prepares for a very stressful newsroom restructuring

Posted: October 19, 2014 at 8:43 pm

Editor Amalie Nash speaks on turnover, transformation, and a virtual reality adventure

Amalie Nash became editor of the Des Moines Register earlier this year, at a time of transition for Iowas largest daily. (Photo courtesy Amalie Nash)

Its a time of transition at theDes Moines Register. Along withother Gannett newspapers, Iowas largest daily has begun a process of newsroom reorganization that will bring some pain. New reporting jobs are being added even as other positions go away, but a number of longtime staffers will likely find themselves out of a job at the end of the processand some have reportedly alreadybowed out.

Not all of the changes underway at the Register are difficult, though. The paper has also made news recently with the announcement of anew partnershipwith Bloomberg Politics; a collaboration with papers across the state totrack political ad spending; a multi-tiered offensive in the battle for open records; and, perhaps most surprisingly, a foray into futurism with the Harvest of Change series, in which theRegisterpresented a virtual-reality tour of an Iowa farm designed to be viewed through the Oculus Rift headset.

At the center of all these changes has been Amalie Nash, theRegisters editor and vice president for audience engagement, who is still in her first year at the helm after coming over from theDetroit Free Press. A Michigan native, Nash took the Register job at what she noted was a transformational time for the paper and Gannett as a whole. I spoke to Nash late last week about the restructuring, theRegisters ongoing open-records battles, and the papers venture into the unsettled (and for this interviewer, unsettling) territory of virtual reality. An edited transcript is below.

I understand youve been doing interviews for your restructuring this weekin which every staffer has to reapply for positions in a reorganized newsroom. Whats the reaction been like in the newsroom to this tumultuous process?

Its certainly a difficult process for everyone. Weve had a range of emotions from across the room. You know, its a very stressful time, and were cognizant of that.

One of the takeaways weve seen is just how passionate our employees are about the Registerand about wanting to be part of the newsroom as were moving forward. And so weve heard a lot of really great stories from people about why they got into journalism, why theyre right for their roles; people are excited about some of the new roles that are going to be part of this restructuring. This is a difficult process and one that we think will position us to have future success, to be able to have some new areas of coverage and that sort of thing.

Youve saidthat youre beefing up reporting as part of the process, and yetits been reportedthat your newsrooms in Des Moines and at theIowa City Press-Citizenare going to be losing 18 positions between them. So how can you be both beefing up reporting and shrinking the newsroom?

We dont know exactly how many positions its going to be at this point because obviously theres a lot of financial modeling that goes into this. And so part of its going to depend on what the payroll is going to look like at the end of this. But there will be a loss of positions as a result of that, and thats coming in a couple of different areas.
