It Looks Like Starship Chunks Are Washing Up on Beaches – Futurism

About seven miles away from SpaceX's Starbase launch facility in Boca Chica, Texas, pieces of what appear to be heat shield tiles from the company's latest failed Starship launch appear to have been found washed up on the shore of the Gulf of Mexico.

A Twitter user who goes by the handle "Bubba Gucci" posted a series of photos of what look to be broken pieces of Starship heat shield tile that he said he found when walking along the shore on South Padre Island.

"Starship pieces are extremely [lightweight] and shapable by just the tossing of the waves in some cases," the user posted alongside a photo of him holding one of the alleged pieces. "Many pieces you find are unidentifiable if you dont know what youre looking for, but the foam has its own distinct tint. Maybe it has slightly yellowed in the sun."

While SpaceX hasn't quite confirmed that those pieces or any others found after Starship's explosive 4/20 orbital test and yes, we did ask the company for comment, but given that CEO Elon Musk is known for dissolving PR departments, we're not necessarily expecting an answer prior reporting and the co-signing of University of Texas aerospace scientist Chris Combs leads us to believe that these are likely the real deal.

Just a few days after the intentionally-exploded Starship launch, the CollectSpace blog reported that people had already begun finding similar-looking pieces of debris on the same beach where Bubba Gucci found dozens of alleged tiles and that SpaceX had issued a call for people to call a dedicated recovery hotline or get in contact via email in order to get the debris back to the company.

Building the case, video drone operator and SpaceX enthusiast Joe Tegtmeyer also tweeted about finding heat tile pieces, and in a follow-up post said he'd spoken with the company with information about where and when he'd found it.

To his end, Bubba Gucci says that as of this week, South Padre Island is veritably swimming in the probably Starship debris.

"There is no way to not find these," he tweeted. "Theyre everywhere, up and down the island."

It's a bird! It's a plane! It's... yet another rocket clogging the Florida skies, which according to Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg is not at all bueno.

As Central Florida'sSpectrum News 13 reports, the one-time presidential candidate explained the apparently-growing issue during a recent press conference about airline cancellations.

"In Florida, where the closure of airspace to accommodate commercial space launches now happens often enough to noticeably affect airline schedules, we are engaging the space sector to keep more launch windows clear of peak flight periods," Buttigieg said.

Pilot and Florida Tech visiting professor Capt. Shem Malmquist toldNews 13 thatmore and more commercial launches in the booming private space sector are indeed compounding the general sense of chaos at airports.

"If you take SpaceX, theyre launching satellites to be in a particular orbit, you cant just delay a couple of hours and have those get into a particular position," Malmquist said. "And so, theres only so much the [Federal Aviation Administration] can do towards that."

Though Buttigieg didn't name any names, it's not hard to tell that the former South Bend, Indiana mayor was referencing, at least in part, SpaceX not only because it's the dominant commercial spaceflight company, but also because he and CEO Elon Musk have had pretty extensive beef.

The bad blood between the two appears to have begun back in 2021, when Musk took umbrage to a provision in the White House's Build Back Better Act that would give sizable tax credits to people who bought union-made electric vehicles.

"Honestly," Musk said at theWall Street Journal's CEO Council Summit, "I would just can this whole bill."

Buttigieg, on his end, appeared to reference Musk when promoting union jobs in the electric vehicle sector a pretty transparent jab given that the Tesla CEO has often been a foe of unionization.

Although the transportation secretary later credited Musk with helping make EVs "possible in America," he nevertheless has continued to counter the multi-hyphenateCEO's maneuvers, including his "hyperloop" high-speed rail proposal.

"Sure, try it," he toldGizmodo in 2022, "but well probably not try it on our dime."

Buttigieg again took aim at Tesla in a new interview with the Associated Press, criticizing the company's assisted driving software, which he said shouldn't be called "Autopilot."

Between the Buttigieg-Musk drama and the increasing problem of flight cancelations, things are pretty screwed in Florida and with the commercial spaceflight industry continuing to see massive growth, it probably won't get better before it gets worse.

The Mt Gox Guy Is Back and He Says He’s Launching a Space Station – Futurism

California-based space startup Vast says it's teaming up with SpaceX to launch the world's first commercial space station, CNN reports.

Of course, other companies have made similar claims before, and so far, nobody has pulled it off. And it's probably not helping Vast's credibility that founder and CEO Jed McCaleb was also involved with the long-defunct bitcoin exchange Mt. Gox,a notorious crypto failure.

That said, at least it sounds like he's got skin in the game. McCaleb, who was also behind crypto protocol Ripple, says he's investing $300 million of his own cash with hopes of both launching the station dubbed Haven-1 and the first crewed mission to the outpost.

McCaleb is the company's only investor, and the company isn't looking for outside bankrolling until it can generate revenue and has its station built, according to CNN. It'll likely cost a lot more than $300 million to get off the ground, something McCaleb acknowledged himself.

Did we mention that the timeline is extraordinarily ambitious? The company is hoping to launch the station as early as August 2025, an eyewatering schedule.

In other words, it's an astronomically ambitious project that's befitting of a crypto tsar.

Things get even more expansive after the planned station gets aloft, too. Vast's long-term vision includes a 328-foot "multi-module spinning artificial gravity space station launched by SpaceXs Starship transportation system," according to the company's announcement.

At the very least, McCaleb, who made his fortune in crypto a field that is wholly unrelated to the private space industry seems to be aware that it's a big ask.

"I dont fault people for being skeptical," McCaleb told TechCrunch in a recent interview. "Ive clearly never done anything in aerospace before, so it is a leap."

Fortunately, Vast won't have to start from square one. The company is hoping to piggyback off of SpaceX's already established technologies to get its venture off the ground and is planning to use a Dragon capsule to get passengers to and from the station.

The company's first portion of the station itself is designed to be built in one piece and fit on top of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket as well.

"The Dragon team and the team and leadership (at SpaceX) really want to build a Falcon 9-based space station," Vast president Max Haot told CNN. "So were very, very aligned."

Haot led space company Launcher, which was acquired by Vast in February.

But whether Vast will be able to turn McCaleb's not-insignificant investment into a fully-functioning orbital outpost remains to be seen. For one, the billionaire has a bit of a history when it comes to the exchange of large sums of money.

Well over a decade ago, McCaleb funded the Bitcoin trading platform Mt. Gox as a way to buy and sell "Magic: The Gathering" cards. After pivoting to bitcoin, in 2011 McCaleb sold the site to French coder Mark Karpels.

Three years later, Mt. Gox fell victim to the greatest Bitcoin hack of all time, losing 750,000 Bitcoin, roughly seven percent of all Bitcoin that existed at the time, according to Coindesk and crypto heavyweights are still struggling with the fallout to this day.

McCaleb's culpability remains hazy. In 2019, he was sued over his handling of the exchange, with plaintiffs arguing that he knew about the safety issues years before the fateful heist.

In 2014, McCaleb founded the non-profit Stellar Development Foundation, which is currently owed $13.2 million by Genesis, a crypto lending firm that filed for bankruptcy back in January.

In short, McCaleb's resume is colorful, to say the least, and casts a bit of a shadow on his new and enormously expensive space ambitions.

To his credit, McCaleb has plenty of capital to back up his new venture. According to Forbes, McCaleb is worth around $2.4 billion.

McCaleb also isn't operating in a vacuum, either, and is one of many CEOs vying to become the first to launch a private space station. It's worth noting that the competition has a considerable headstart. Space startup Axiom Space's plans to construct its Axiom Station, a project that's receiving funding from NASA, are already well underway.

Northrop Grumman and Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin have also announced plans to build private space stations with the help of NASA.

What makes Vast different, however, is that the company is trying to get by without any funding from the public sector.

In the meantime, to raise some funds without calling for outside investment, Vast is selling up to four seats on its inaugural crewed mission, dubbed Vast-1.

The company hasn't announced pricing yet, but given the scale of the operation, it likely won't be cheap.

A Brief Guide to Futurism | Academy of American Poets

Futurism was a twentieth-century Italian and Russian avant-garde movement in literature and arts. It promoted extreme artistic innovation and experimentation, declaring a radical disassociation from the past and a focus on new art, technology, and politics, commonly manifested through primitivism. The Futurists strongly rejected the self-awareness behind the overextended lyricism of Symbolismthe dominant school of the time. In contrast, it showed a preference for the visual arts that discussed conservative social elements and challenged them in order to provoke a violent negative response.

Italian Futurism began with a manifesto by F. T. Marinetti (18761944) titled Fondazione e Manifesto del Futurismo (The Founding and Manifesto of Futurism), which declared that artistic work without an aggressive element could not be considered a masterpiece. He enunciated the principles of Futurism in relation to poetry in Parole in Libert (Words in Freedom), demanding a language free of syntax and logical ordering that allowed the poet to rapidly convey intense emotion. In Immaginazione Senza Fili (Wireless Imagination) and Analogia Disegnata (Pictorialized Analogy), he discussed the maximum freedom of imagery and metaphor, which led to expressive use of typographya varying of font sizes and styles within a word or on the same line and free disposition of words on the printed page. Other important Italian Futurists poets were E. Cavacchioli, L. Folgore, and A. Palazzeschi.

Russian Futurism, like Italian Futurism, began as a revolt against the symbolist movement in Russia. The Russian Futurists split into two sub-schools: Cubo-Futurism and Ego-Futurism. Cubo-Futurism called for a broadening of the language with arbitrary and derived words. Major poets of this movement included David Burliuk (18821967), Aleksej Krucenyx (18861968), Vladimir Mayakovsky (18931930), and Viktor (Velemir) Khlebnikov (18851932).

Khlebnikov was acclaimed as the most profound and inventive poet of the Cubo-Futurism movement. His study ranged from dense and private neologisms to exotic verse forms written in palindromes. His poetry, albeit innovative and inspirational to his contemporaries, was too impenetrable to reach a popular audience. Another widely celebrated poet to come out of Cubo-Futurism was Mayakovsky, whose poetics were a mixture of extravagant exaggerations and self-centered and arduous imagery.

After his death, Mayakovsky was canonized by Joseph Stalin as the best and most talented poet of the Soviet epoch. The second sub-school, Ego-Futurism, gained momentum in 1911 with poet Ivan Ignateev, who lived in Petersburg, Russia. He wrote numerous manifestos and ran the Petersburg Herald. Ego-Futurism, like Cubo-Futuristm, was preoccupied with urban imagery, eccentric words, neologisms, and experimental rhymes. In contrast to Cubo-Futurism, the Ego-Futurists employed a less typographically rigorous method of experimentation and were more interested in the intensive exploration of the self through poetry. Other poets in Ego-Futurism include Vasilisk Gnedov (18901978), Igor-Severjanin (18871941), and V. Sersenevic (18931942).

Futurism became a vast movement in the early 1900s, influencing poets throughout Slavic countries, Spain, and England.

The word futurismhad a startling success, and the new movement spread rapidly through Italy, France, Spain, England, and Russia. The hyperkinetic Marinetti, who christened himself the caffeine of Europe, the self-proclaimed primitive of a new sensibility, was the driving force of futurism. I felt, all of a sudden, that articles, poetries, and polemics no longer sufficed, he said. You had to change methods, go down in the street, seize power in all the theatres, and introduce the fisticuff into the war of art. The manifesto was his weapon, and he used it to praise danger and revolt, aggressive action, the beauty of speed (he famously proclaimed that A racing car . . . is more beautiful than the Victory of Samothrace), the metallization of man, the violent joys of crowds and cities. He also showed appalling innocence about war, which he glorified as the worlds only hygiene.

Scientists Link Male Pattern Balding to Wildly Popular Beverage

Soda drinkers, beware it looks like your favorite sugary drinks may be linked to hair loss.

A new study out of Tsinghua University in Beijing has found a new link between sugary drinks and male pattern hair loss, with beverages ranging from soft drinks to artificially-sweetened juices to energy drinks being some of the primary culprits.

In short,it's depressing news:all the stuff that tastes really great may make you lose your hair.

The paper, newly published in thejournal Nutrients, is hardly the first we've heard about the ill health effects of sugary drinks.And doctors have long suspected a link between excess sugar and hair loss.

But the study's wider-lens examination of the connection is intriguing. The researchers at Tsinghua's Vanke School of Public Health anonymously surveyed 1028 men online between the ages of 18 and 45 on the Chinese mainland last year, asking them their sweetened drink intake, any health issues they may be experiencing, whether they smoked or drank, and if they were experiencing hair issues, as well as psychological questions.

The results were striking. Respondents with male pattern baldness, they found, were drinking an average of 4,293 milliliters per week that's more than a gallon, or more than two of those two-liter bottles of Pepsi you can buy at the grocery stores while respondents with full heads of hair drinking just 2,513 milliliters.

More research is needed, but the Tsinghua researchers hypothesized that the root cause could be sugary drinks' propensity to heighten blood sugar. Diabetes studies have shown that heightened blood sugar levels appear to be associated with hair loss, and with sweet drinks being a major risk factor for developing or worsening diabetes, so the logic may hold up.

Given that this research linking sugary drinks and male pattern hair loss is so preliminary, the paper's authors noted that further study is needed.Nonetheless, it's an intriguing and disturbing new reason not to pound down too many sodas or Red Bulls.

"I heard a star goes supernova after it has produced the element iron. Is this true? If so, how?"

Supernovae have produced nearly every element occurring in nature. When a star is born, it is because it has enough mass to create enough heat, gravity and pressure to sustain nuclear fusion. Fusing hydrogen atoms to helium gives off enormous amounts of energy, and the star spends its life quietly fusing away. This process takes four hydrogen atoms to fuse into one helium atom. Hydrogen has only one proton, while helium has two protons along with two neutrons. This means that two protons are missing. Matter cannot be created or destroyedit can only be turned into something else.

In this case, the two missing protons have turned into two neutrons. This energy is what makes the star shine and give off heat. Well.. after a while, the star has built up quite a bit of helium. This helium has found its way to the stars center to create a helium core. Since hydrogen only has one proton, and helium has two protons and two neutrons, its heavier. That means the star has a little more mass in its core, which generates more heat. This heat builds up more and more, until its hot enough and has enough pressure to start fusing helium to carbon. This process generates a little less energy than fusing hydrogen to helium, but it still produces energy.

As a guideline, a star that has about one half the mass of the sun is too small and cool to fuse helium to carbon. So it will end up as a white dwarf made of helium. Stars between one half to four times the mass of the sun are massive and hot enough to fuse carbon to oxygen. Carbon and oxygen are fused more or less at the same time, and youll end up with a white dwarf made out of carbon and oxygen.I want to jump off topic here for a moment and ask a basic chemistry/physics question to all you readers. What happens when you introduce large amounts of heat and pressure to carbon? A girls best friend, diamonds!

The star has died and its a white dwarf made out of carbon: a giant diamond in the sky. Stars with masses greater than four times the mass of the sun are massive and hot enough to fuse oxygen to silicon. No, not the stuff they make implants out of, thats "silicone" (sometimes, one letter can make a big difference).

Stars that have earned the title of "supergiant"are so massive and so hot that they begin fusing silicon to a solid core of iron. Once the star starts fusing iron, thats it-- its doomed. Fusing silicon to iron takes more energy than it gives off. This means that the star is going to die soon; it is causing its own death by using more of its own energy than it is getting back from nuclear fusion.

When a star is fusing iron in its core, it's still giving off insane amounts of energy. The helium, hydrogen, carbon, oxygen, and silicon are still there in the star in different shells. Hydrogen is at the surface, still fusing to helium; a little further down, helium fusing to carbon and oxygen; further down we have silicon until the core, where silicon fuses to iron.This is why the star still exists and doesn't spontaneously explode the moment the first iron atom pops into existence.

At this point, the energy process is just no longer exothermic but endothermic. Iron cannot be fused into anything heavier because of the insane amounts of energy and force required to fuse iron atoms. The atomic structure of iron is very stable, more so than most other elements. I'm not saying all other elements are radioactive or unstable, just that iron is slightly more stable than the previous elements.

Stars this massive can turn into several things; it depends on how heavy it is. They can explode into supernova, collapse into various types of neutron stars, or even form a black hole.The iron in the stars core isnt the reason why the star went supernova, its overall mass made it explode. But, the iron in its core caused it to die.

The rendering aboveillustrates the progression of a supernova blast. A starspends its life fusing hydrogen into helium. It then starts to fuse elements that are a bit heavier, leading up iron. Once iron comes into the equation, things get very bad very quickly. Suddenly, it's no longer able to sustain equilibrium, so its core collapses in on itselfand it castsoff its gaseous envelope in one fell swoop, sparking a supernova. Later on, the remainder of its gas gets energized by the core it leaves behind, either a pulsar or a neutron star (sometimes, if the star is massive enough, it leaves a stellarmass black hole behind instead), and it glows brilliantly for a time. We call theseamazing things supernova remnants.

James Cameron Says He Commissioned a Scientific Study on Whether Jack …

"Only one could survive."Heartbreak at Sea

Twenty five years since its first release, James Cameron's swooning epic "Titanic" is still the third highest grossing movie of all time. Besides its storied legacy, it's also spawned an endless debate among fans on its ending: whether Jack, played by Leonardo DiCaprio, could have survived the freezing ocean if he'd climbed onto the floating door with Rose,played by Kate Winslet.

And now, Cameron renowned for his obsession with minute cinematic details says he's finally put an end to the debate with an actual scientific study.

"We have done a scientific study to put this whole thing to rest and drive a stake through its heart once and for all," Cameron told The Toronto Sun while promoting his latest blockbuster sensation "Avatar: The Way of Water." "We have since done a thorough forensic analysis with a hypothermia expert who reproduced the raft from the movie and we're going to do a little special on it that comes out in February."

"We took two stunt people who were the same body mass of Kate and Leo," the acclaimed director explained, "and we put sensors all over them and inside them and we put them in ice water and we tested to see whether they could have survived through a variety of methods and the answer was, there was no way they both could have survived. Only one could survive."

For now, that's all the details we have on the study, but this isn't the first time Cameron has addressed the perennial, nagging question. In 2017, he debunked a theory posited on the TV show "Mythbusters" that Jack could have survived by tying Rose's life vest to the door for buoyancy.

"You're underwater tying this thing on in 28-degree water, and that's going to take you five to 10 minutes, so by the time you come back up you're already dead," Cameron told The Daily Beast at the time. "So that wouldn't work."

And science aside, Cameron thinks Jack's death was thematically integral to the story so there's no point getting hooked up on something he's not going to change his mind on anyway.

"No, he needed to die," Cameron explained during the recent press tour. "It's like Romeo and Juliet. It's a movie about love and sacrifice and mortality. The love is measured by the sacrifice."

We'll have to wait until the study and/or the special come out, but if there's anyone who'd do whatever it takes to get to the bottom of a thalassic mystery, it'd be Cameron.

Incredible Creatures that Use Photosynthesis For Energy – Futurism

You have probably heard about a trend called breatharianism, a 'diet' claiming that humans can sustain themselves without food and water, surviving on only light and air. This is a potentially lethal practice and several practitioners have, quite obviously, died because of it. Animals and humans are heterotrophic organisms, unable to produce their own food, thus they depend on organic sources to provide it.

Plants, on the other hand, are autotrophic organismsthat are able to produce food out of inorganic matter. With photosynthesis, they convert water, minerals and sunlight into glucose and oxygen. Plants use glucose as their source of energy needed for growth and life. Their role in the life cycle is important, because they serve as a source of food and oxygen for other living organisms.

But nature never fails to surprise us, sometimes ''the laws'' can be broken. Scientists have found some animals that can, just like plants, survive on photosynthesis:

Sea Slug(Elysia chlorotica) is an extraordinarily beautiful slug living in the waters of the east coast of the United States and Canada. It's distinctive feature is green colored, leaf-shaped body. The slug eats algae (Vaucheria litorea), but it's not it's only source of energy!

It seems like this slug stole photosynthetic organelles (chloroplasts) and some genes from the algae, which enables them to live without eating! They can spend their days laying out in the sun and, just like plants and green algae, get their energy through photosynthesis. The symbiosis that enables algae's chloroplasts to work for slug is called kleptoplasty.

Pea Aphid (Acyrthospihon pisum) is an insect living worldwide that feeds on plants (legumes). Even though they may look like any other insect, unpleasant or even terrifying to some, they truly are amazing.

Pea Aphids are capable of producing carotenoids, pigments found in chloroplasts (photosynthetic organelles) and chromoplasts, giving them orange-reddish colour and helping chlorophyll with photosynthesis. In aphids, carotenoids are responsible for their colour, some of them don't have it and are white. It also seems like carotenoids serve not only as a beauty compound, but they can also be usedto convert sunlight into energy. However, these correlations are not yet clear and well researched.

Spotted Salamander (Ambystoma maculatum), just like the sea slug, it lives in symbiotic relationship with algae. They were found in embryos of the animal. The salamander's embryos are found in clear colored eggs, laid by the females on the underwater plants, close to the surface, so that the light can reach them.

It seems like green algae help embryos get much-needed energy for growth and development from sunlight, whileproviding anextra source of energy(this, in turn,increases theirchances ofsurvival). Spotted Salamanders are the highest developed animal species and the only ones among all vertebrae, that can directly benefit from photosynthesis. Usually, the immune system of highly developed organisms will prevent such symbiotic behavior.

These special animals just show how complex the living world is, and that the line between plants and animals may not be so well-defined. It makes us wonder where evolution will take us in the next few billions of years (if we last that long) Maybe one day, even humans could benefit from photosynthesis. Former Google CEO Issues Dire Warning About China – futurism.com

A new report warns that China could soon be able to rule over the US economy and military using cutting edge tech a sign that the country is increasingly concerned about China's recent leaps in technological advancements.

The report was compiled,notably, by the think tank Special Competitive Studies Project (SCSP), which is chaired by former Google CEO Eric Schmidt.The report concluded that the US will have to catch up with China's advancements in tech or risk not only falling behind, but becoming subservient to China as well.

The tech titan's warnings are not falling on deaf ears. The White House is clearly taking the report's recommendations seriously.

"I dont need to tell you that advancements in science and technology are poised to define the geopolitical landscape of the 21st century," national security advisor Jake Sullivan said in prepared remarks, responding to the report's release. "They will generate game-changers in health and medicine, food security, and clean energy."

The report identifies three key "technology battlegrounds," including microelectronics, 5G connectivity, and artificial intelligence, which could "represent the next chapter of the industrial revolution."

China is already making major headway in expanding those technologies which could leave the US behind.

And that could have some disastrous consequences. In the worst case scenario, the report notes, China could take control over rare Earth minerals, which means that "Americas military is crippled, and the nation is plunged into a depression," and "Americans are forced to live in a world where China can turn off the technology tap."

As a result, "the United States and other democracies would become economically dependent, losing their engines of prosperity and freedom of action in the world," the report warns.

In short, the think tank argues that "there is ample reason for concern" about China winning the technology race.

But it's not game over for the US. The country can harness existing industries to build out "an advantage in critical technologies," the report concludes, while also investing to "bring technology hardware manufacturing back to the US."

According to the report, the US will have to act by the end of this decade to make sure China doesn't gain the upper hand a dire warning, representative of the emergence of a major power struggle between world powers.

What'll actually happen is anyone's guess. After all, China's already staring down the barrel of a precipitous population bomb that could wreak havoc on its economic ambitions. But the stakes,at least, are as clear as they've ever been.
