Fast food linked to asthma, eczema: Study
Posted: at 8:49 am
Wellington, Jan 23 (IANS) Eating fast food thrice a week or more elevates the risk of asthma and eczema, while eating fruit with the same frequency provides a protective effect, says a study.
The findings of the research led by professor Innes Asher and Philippa Ellwood from the University of Auckland's department of paediatrics could have huge implications for public health.
Data was collected on more than 319,000 teenagers (13-14 years of age) from 107 centres in 51 countries, and more than 181,000 children (6-7 year-olds) from 64 centres in 31 countries, the respiratory journal Thorax reports.
All the participants were involved in the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), a collaborative research project which has been led by Auckland for more than 20 years and now involves more than 100 countries and nearly two million children, making it the largest study of its kind, according to an Auckland statement.
The teenagers and their parents were quizzed about the prevalence of symptoms of asthma (wheeze), rhinoconjunctivitis (runny or blocked nose accompanied by itchy and watery eyes) and eczema, and about their weekly diet.
These included meat, fish, fruits and vegetables, pulses, cereals, bread and pasta, rice, butter, margarine, nuts, potatoes, milk, eggs, and fast food/burgers.
Participants were asked to assign their consumption of each of these foods to one of the following categories: never; occasionally; once or twice a week; three or more times a week.
After taking account of factors likely to influence results, the analysis showed that fast food was the only food type to show the same associations across both age groups, prompting the authors to suggest that "such consistency adds some weight to the possible causality of the relationship".

Eczema in infants linked to gut bacteria
Posted: at 8:49 am
Jan. 21, 2013 Children with eczema have a more diverse set of bacteria in their guts than non affected children, finds a new study in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Microbiology. The types of bacteria present were also more typical of adult gut microbes than for toddlers without eczema.
Eczema is a chronic inflammation of the epidermis. The gut bacteria of children with or without eczema was examined when they were six and 18 months old. At six months all the infants had the same types of bacteria but by 18 months old the children with eczema had more of a type of bacteria normally associated with adults (Clostridium clusters IV and XIVa) while the healthy children had a greater amount of Bacteroidetes.
MSc Lotta Nylund from University of Turku, Finland, who led the project explained, "The composition of bacteria in a child's gut depends on its environment and the food it eats. You would expect that as a child's diet changes so will the bacteria present. The number of bifidobacteria naturally falls with age and in total we found 21 groups of bacteria which changed in this time period. However it is the early change towards adult-type bacteria which seems to be a risk factor for eczema."

The finding came from new research conducted by a team of experts from the University of Turku, Finland, and was published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Microbiology.
The scientists discovered that the types of bacteria existing in the guts of the children with eczema were more typical of adult gut microbes than for infants without eczema.
Eczema is described as a persistent inflammation of the epidermis; it can also be referred to as atopic dermatitis, or atopic eczema (the most common form of eczema). A recent study found that kids are more likely to develop eczema if they eat fast food 3 or more times a week.
People affected by the condition may develop itchy, reddened, cracked, and dry skin. Previous research demonstrated that giving baths of diluted beach regularly to children with chronic, severe eczema helps reduce the severity of the condition in cases with secondary bacterial infection.
For the purpose of the study, the team of researchers observed children with eczema and those without eczema when they were six and 18 months old. The experts wanted to compare their gut bacteria.
Results showed that all the infants had the same types of bacteria at six months. However, at 18 months, the toddlers with eczema had more of a type of bacteria, known as Clostridium clusters IV and XIVa, which is usually linked to adults.

Junk food linked to 40% rise in childhood asthma and eczema, say scientists
Posted: at 12:44 pm
Eating more than three portions of junk food each week could lead to an increased risk of childhood asthma and eczema, say researchers.
The data, from more than 500,000 children in over 50 countries suggests that poor dietary habits may be the cause of increasing levels of allergy-related conditions such as asthma and eczema in children and adolescents.
Writing in the BMJs Thorax journal, the international team of researchers reveal that young teenagers in particular are nearly 40% more likely to have severe asthma if they consume common junk foods that are high in levels of sugars and fats more than three times a week.
For children aged six to seven the risk increased by 27%, said the researchers led by Professor Innes Asher, from the University of Auckland in New Zealand, and Prof Hywel Williams, from the University of Nottingham in the UK.
"If the associations between fast foods and the symptom prevalence of asthma, rhinoconjunctivitis and eczema is causal, then the findings have major public health significance owing to the rising consumption of fast foods globally," they said.
Junk food consumption was also found to be linked with severeeczemaand rhinitis, said Asher and his colleagues.
However, the team added that eating fruit appeared to offer protection for young people with those consuming more than three portions a week reducing the severity of their symptoms by 11% among teenagers and 14% among younger children.
Research details
The study findings are as the result of a large collaborative project called the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC), which involves nearly 2 million children in more than 100 countries, making it the biggest of its kind.
