Eczema (cont.) Eczema Home Remedies

Removing exacerbating factors is a good place to start. This may be as simple as changing the laundry detergent or as difficult as moving to a new climate or changing jobs.

Prevent dry skin by taking warm showers or baths. Use a mild soap or body cleanser. Prior to drying off, apply an effective emollient to wet skin. Emollients are substances that inhibit the evaporation of water. Generally, they are available in jars and have a "stiff" consistency. They do not flow and ought to leave a shine with a slightly greasy feel on the skin. Most good emollients contain petroleum jelly although certain solid vegetable shortenings do a more than creditable job.

Avoid wearing tight-fitting, rough, or scratchy clothing.

Avoid scratching the rash. If it's not possible to stop scratching, cover the area with a dressing. Wear gloves at night to minimize skin damage from scratching.

Anything that causes sweating can irritate the rash. Avoid strenuous exercise during a flare.

An anti-inflammatory topical cream may be necessary to control a flare of atopic dermatitis.

Avoid physical and mental stress. Eating right, light activity, and adequate sleep will help someone stay healthy, which can help prevent flares.

Do not expect a quick response. Atopic dermatitis is controllable but consistency in application of treatment products is necessary.

FRIDAY, Oct. 17, 2014 (HealthDay News) -- Daily vitamin D supplements might help children with eczema that gets worse in the winter, a new study suggests.

When eczema, a chronic inflammatory skin disorder, flares up in the winter it's known as winter-related atopic dermatitis.

Researchers found vitamin D significantly reduced the uncomfortable symptoms associated with this disorder.

"While we don't know the exact proportion of patients with atopic dermatitis whose symptoms worsen in the winter, the problem is common," said study leader Dr. Carlos Camargo, of Massachusetts General Hospital's department of emergency medicine.

"In this large group of patients, who probably had low levels of vitamin D, taking daily vitamin D supplements -- which are inexpensive, safe and widely available -- proved to be quite helpful," he said in a hospital news release.

A common treatment for severe atopic dermatitis is the controlled use of ultraviolet light, which stimulates production of vitamin D in the skin, the study's authors said. In conducting their research, they explored the possibility that vitamin D deficiency -- the so-called sunshine vitamin -- could help explain why the condition often gets worse during winter.

The study, conducted with the help of scientists at the Health Sciences University of Mongolia, involved 107 Mongolian children between the ages of 2 and 17 from nine outpatient clinics in the capital city of Ulaanbaatar.

All of the children had atopic dermatitis that flared up in cold weather or during the transition from fall to winter. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: those who received a 1000 IU daily dose of vitamin D and those who received a placebo.

The children's symptoms were evaluated when the study began, and one month later when it ended. The children's parents were also asked whether or not they felt their child's skin condition had improved.

The study, published in the October issue of the Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology, revealed the children who received the vitamin D supplements had an average 29 percent improvement in their symptoms. In contrast, the children who received the placebo had a 16 percent improvement.

Eczema makes me feel left out and sad. Eczema is hard to live with. It hurts when people stare. And, the simple, poignant statement I feel bad.

Unfortunately, the primary reason that most people remain suffering with eczema is because there is an incomplete understanding of the disease and what causes it. In addition, many of the Rx medicines for eczema and other skin issues have side effects, some of which are severe.

A childs skin is more sensitive to pain than an adults skin, and they feel pain more intensely, says Lou Paradise, president and chief of research, Topical BioMedics. Understanding and treating the cause of eczema, not just symptoms, is key.

(RTTNews.com) - Sanofi (SNY, SAN) and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. ( REGN ) Monday announced the start of the phase 3 trial for dupilumab on patients with atopic dermatitis or eczema.

Primary objective of Liberty Ad Chronos, first trial of the phase 3 study, is to demonstrate the efficacy of the drug in adults with moderate to severe AD, when administered concomitantly with topical corticosteroids through 16 weeks, the companies said. The trial will have around 700 patients.

Secondary objective is to gauge the safety and efficacy of dupilumab up to 52 weeks.

"This Phase 3 program will evaluate if blocking IL-4 and IL-13, two key cytokines in the Th2 inflammatory pathway, may provide a potential new approach for this chronic, difficult-to-manage disease," said Donald Leung, a member of the Liberty Ad Clinical Trials Steering Committee.
