Eczema stunting your growth?

(HealthDay News) -- The skin disease eczema doesn't increase the risk of being short, researchers report.
"Childhood eczema is not associated with short stature overall, although severe disease with prominent sleep disturbance is associated with higher odds of short stature in early adolescence," the Northwestern University researchers wrote.
Previously, there have been conflicting results in studies looking for a possible link between eczema and height, they said.
The current analysis looked at nine past studies. Those studies included almost 265,000 children and teens and more than 80,000 adults, according to the researchers.
Overall, the analysis showed that eczema was not associated with significant differences in height.
However, a very small number of youngsters with severe eczema who did not get enough sleep appeared to be at increased risk for slower growth. These children had three or fewer nights of sufficient sleep a week, according to the study. And the researchers also found that this link was significant only at ages 10 to 11, which suggests that this growth impairment may be reversible.
"Future studies are warranted to better characterize sleep disturbances and other risk factors and mechanisms of growth impairment in eczema and to determine whether such impairment is reversible," the researchers said.
In the United States, about 11 percent of children and nearly 9 percent of adults have eczema, according to the researchers.

Tips on treating eczema

In Utah, winter means skiing, snowboarding, Jazz games and Temple Square lights. For many people, it also means battling eczema a.k.a. atopic dermatitis, which affects about 10 to 20 percent of infants and 3 percent of adults. Itchy flare-ups strike even short-term visitors to the nations second driest state.
A lot of patients will visit or move from other areas of the country and their eczema will flare when theyre out here, said Erika Summers, M.D., a dermatologist with University of Utah Health Care. Well see transplants from California, even India, and they havent had any eczema for years until they come here to Utah.
She recommends migrating to balmy Florida for the winter, but then where would you ski?
Eczema has no cure and its exact cause is unknown, but it can often be controlled through treatment. Rashes commonly appear on the face, neck, eyelids, back of knees, elbows, hands, feet and nipples. Most people with the condition have had it since they were young children, and about 50 percent of kids outgrow eczema by the time theyre teenagers, Summers said.
Itching can be really severe for some people where it really impairs their quality of life, and many patients with severe eczema are embarrassed about their physical appearance, Summers said.
For Utahns with eczema who are intent on living through the dry winters that give the Beehive States slopes their trademark fluffy powder, Summers offers several tips for fending off irritated and inflamed skin.
First and above all else: moisturize. It seems obvious but many people with eczema simply arent moisturizing enough or properly, Summers said. Its important to thoroughly moisturize twice a day.
Avoid lotions, which tend to be more drying in the end, Summers said.
Opt instead for creams such as Eucerin, Cerave and Cetaphil and hypoallergenic ointments such as Aquaphor. Many people dislike the greasiness of ointments, Summers said, so she recommends using it before bed.

Study finds eczema, short stature not associated overall

Eczema, an itchy chronic inflammatory disease of the skin, was not associated overall with short stature in an analysis of data from several studies, although a small group of children and adolescents with severe eczema who do not get enough sleep may have potentially reversible growth impairment, according to a study published online by JAMA Dermatology.
Eczema (atopic dermatitis) affects about 10 percent of children and adults in the United States. The disease results in a number of conditions that could impact growth in children and adolescents, such as sleep impairment, chronic inflammation and treatment with systemic corticosteroids. However, there have been conflicting results in studies about a possible association between eczema and short stature, according to background in the study.
Jonathan I. Silverberg, M.D., Ph.D, and Amy S. Paller, M.D., M.S., of Northwestern University, Chicago, used data from nine population-based studies to examine a possible association between eczema and being short. The data included 264,326 children and adolescents and 83,511 adults.
An analysis of the studies indicates that, overall, eczema was not associated with significant differences of height in any of the studies or in the pooled analyses. The overall U.S. prevalence of eczema in childhood was 11.4 percent and 8.8 percent in adults.
In a small group of patients, short stature was associated with eczema only when there also was an indicator of insufficient sleep (zero to three nights of sufficient sleep per week), with 1.3 percent of children with eczema having short stature and getting only as many as three nights of sufficient sleep per week. However, this association was significant only at 10 to 11 years of age, which suggests the association may be reversible, the authors note.
"Childhood eczema is not associated with short stature overall, although severe disease with prominent sleep disturbance is associated with higher odds of short stature in early adolescence. Future studies are warranted to better characterize sleep disturbances and other risk factors and mechanisms of growth impairment in eczema and to determine whether such impairment is reversible," the authors note.

Whats Going Around Eczema
Posted: at 5:42 am
By Dr. Kyle Scarborough / Whats Going Around
Eczema, from the Greek for boil out is a term that encompasses a wide variety of skin conditions. Causes are equally complex. Skin allergies to food, detergents and even dust mites are suspected. It may be inherited, especially among allergy sufferers. Xerotic eczema flares up in the cold weather we are starting to experience.
Signs and symptoms: As the name implies, these skin conditions usually start as small, blister-like lesions that start to spread over the skin, causing red, dry, scaly patches on any part of the body. Itching and flaking are very common. Left untreated, the affected skin can become infected with staph.
What to do: There is no cure, but symptoms can usually be controlled with moisturizers and steroid creams. Persistent cases may require stronger prescription steroids. Those intolerant of steroids may benefit from other immunosuppressive agents, but side effects are more of an issue. Mild soaps and detergents for sensitive skin are widely available. Avoid wearing cloth that can irritate the skin.
Thought for the day: Dry, flaky, itchy skin could be eczema setting in.
