What is Eczema?

Eczema is a common skin disease characterized by inflammation, itching, and oozing vesicular lesions that become scaly, crushed or hardened. The condition usually occurs symmetrically on both sides of the body and is recurring.

Why do people get Eczema?

The specific cause of eczema is complicated, as it can develop due to both internal and external factors and can even be due to psychosomatic issues such as stress.

Internal factors: Heredity Predisposition for eczema Functional disorders of the secretion glands Digestive system disorders (stomach problems, intestine problems, constipation, diarrhea) Nervous system issues Metabolism problems Stress, exhaustion Varicose veins Excessive sweating Skin dryness

External factors: Chemical imbalance caused by prescription medication Cosmetics such as perfume and make-up Certain spices and condiments Detergents Animal toxins Certain foods such as eggs, seafood, and milk Airborne irritants such as pollen and dust Bacterial and viral infections Sun and wind exposure Cold temperatures Scratching

Eczema is an allergic or auto-immune reaction to any one or combination of the internal and external factors affecting the body. There are many different kinds of eczema, some with unknown causes.

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that itchy skin is caused by wind evil. In TCM, itchiness can move across different places on the body, like the movement of the wind. Inflammation and oozing vesicular lesions are caused by wet evil. In TCM, a negative kind of wetness causes effusion from eczema lesions, so we call it wet evil. In this sense, the main causes of eczema are a combination of both wind and wet evil. To help farmers manage the risk of facial eczema in their herds, Dairy Australia and GippsDairy will again support a pasture spore monitoring service across a series of sentinel farms in Gippsland. Click here for more information.

Remember that early intervention is critical.

When local pasture spore counts trend upward of 20,000 spores/gram and weather conditions look favourable for sporulation, each farm should monitor its own pasture spore counts week to week and implement facial eczema control and prevention strategies.

Spores have already been recorded at low levels in pasture samples in December.

To ensure maximum reliability of pasture spore counts, a consistent approach to collecting pasture samples is required.

The correct method is provided in Appendix A of the Dairy Australia document A Review of Facial Eczema (Pithomycotoxicosis) (updated 2013).

Spore counts on samples collected may be done at a number of veterinary clinics across Gippsland.

Daily feeding of zinc supplements to dairy herds during high risk periods has been shown to protect them from the fungal toxin responsible for facial eczema.

However the stringent regulatory conditions for the control of veterinary medicines in Australia require that treatments used in food producing animals are assessed and approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).

Health Pioneer shares 50 year legacy with new eczema book

More than 40,000 patients have travelled from New Zealand and across the globe to receive an eczema treatment package from Pacific health pioneer Dr Joe Williams. In his first book Eczema - The Neglected Disease of Children, Dr Williams, who turned 80 in October last year, shares his legacy which spans more than 50 years.

Having been at the forefront of Pacific health for many years, Dr Joe Williams has published a book of his lifes work, titled Eczema - The Neglected Disease of Children. It follows more than half a century of working in the field, which has resulted in his own Eczema-Care Therapy package, used by the multitudes that have sought his treatment.

Dr Williams states eczema is a global disease which affects one in five of the worlds children and one in 10 adults and is a growing public health problem.

A paediatrician colleague once told him that eczema is one of the most poorly understood and mismanaged conditions in infants and children in both primary and secondary care.

Eczema is not life-threatening. No one dies from it. Eczema is a silent disease. It does not attract attention in the media and politicians in the same way as the cancers, cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and obesity do. It does not even register on the National Health morbidity and mortality statistics, explains Dr Williams.

Eczema causes unbearable misery, anguish and mental conflict for the sufferer and their family.
