How does the information stored in DNA eventually translate into an organism? How do we go from DNA out to an organism that is capable of describing it? (Let alone cloning it!) How do the 24000 genes in a human expressed to result in you? Most of the functions of metabolism, such as those in photosynthesis and respiration are regulated by proteins that are coded for by genes. This lecture looks at how genes are expressed, how genes are regulated, turned on and off, in certain cells or in response to certain cues. Gene expression in tied to development since some genes must be specifically expressed in certain cells, tissues and organs, but off in others. If you commit a felony in the United states you DNA is entered in a DNA database. Realizing the high rate of recidivism this database has been help of solving additional crimes and cold cases. Extending the database to include all arrested people or even for the entire population has been proposed (and implemented in some countries). The National Debate Public Safety vs The Right to Privacy examines this controversy. On the side of Public Safety: DNA solves crimes; where only criminals should fear DNA testing. On the side of Privacy concerns: DNA is different; there might be significant potential for abuse. DNA evidence is highly definitive for adjudication of sex crimes. The United States has the world #39;s highest rape rate of all countries that publish such data- 13 times higher than England and more than 20 times higher than Japan. On US college campuses, 1 out of every 5 women are raped by the time they graduate, however, 9 out of 10 women raped on campus never tell anyone about the rape. Given the overwhelming evidence in support of evolution as an explanation of the biological diversity on Earth and the origin of new species and the lack of any evidence that this is not the case, why is the concept of evolution still controversial. Certainly one reason are the misconceptions that people have about how it happens and the vast number of observations which support this explanation for biological change from DNA and molecular evidence to individual variation to populations and new species. To some these ideas conflict with ideas of faith and seem inconsistent. The challenge then is not to refute or deny the observable facts but to put them into context with one #39;s faith, much the way that people had to realize that the Earth is not the center of the Universe after Copernicus.
