MARTINEZ -- The last known witness for the prosecution in the Richmond High School gang rape dual jury trial testified Monday that DNA from both defendants was recovered from the crime scene.

Defendant Marcelles Peter's DNA was found on the interior of a discarded, broken used condom, according to DNA expert David Stockwell, who retired from Contra Costa County's crime lab in 2011. Defendant Jose Montano's DNA was found on a condom wrapper, Stockwell said.

Peter, 20, and Montano, 22, are each facing life in prison if they are convicted as charged in connection with the Oct. 24, 2009, assault on a then-16-year-old girl in a dark campus courtyard during a homecoming dance. Questions that their attorneys lobbed at Stockwell on Monday focused on the integrity of the evidence collection and testing processes, and possible scenarios as to how their clients' DNA could get on the objects in an effort to raise doubt with jurors.

Ari Morales, 19, and Manuel Ortega, 22, are already serving long prison sentences after taking plea deals in the case; Elvis Torrentes, 25, and John Crane, 46, are awaiting trial.

The lab spent a year testing all the biological evidence against DNA samples that police collected from the victim, the seven men and boys originally charged in the case, and another six men and boys who were identified as witnesses to the assault.

Stockwell said he could not say whether Peter's genetic material retrieved from inside a sperm fraction sample on the condom came from Peter's sperm. It is possible, he said, that Peter's non-sperm DNA, which was also found on the condom, crossed over into the sperm fraction.

Crane's sperm was recovered from that same condom, as well as on numerous parts of the victim's body, on stains on other suspects' clothes and on various objects found at the crime scene, according to Stockwell.

Montano's DNA on a condom wrapper was of the non-sperm variety, Stockwell said. Both Peter's and Montano's DNA were also found on an alcoholic beverage can.

Experts believe the image is a very accurate representation of the woman's face

The killer who hid a woman's body in a shallow grave on an Edinburgh hill left no DNA at the scene, police have confirmed.

The woman's remains were discovered in a wooded area of Corstorphine Hill on 6 June by a cyclist.

Experts have created a reconstruction of how they think she would have looked, using a CT scan of her skull.

The image, which was released by police on Monday, has prompted more than 30 calls from the public.

Officers said they had received calls from as far away as Israel with suggestions of her possible identity.

Detectives are now following up the calls.

Police also plan to circulate the image locally to homes and businesses around the Corstorphine Hill area.

KOTA KINABALU: The Sessions Court hearing the case of a man charged with raping an underage girl whom he later married, was informed that his DNA was found in the vaginal swab taken from the girl.

The blood samples labeled with Riduan bin Masmud and the victims names matched the profiles of the persons who contributed to the DNA combination, Chemist Rina Md Nawi, 27, of the Kuching Chemist Department, testified on the second day of the trial.

She was responding to the examination-in-chief by deputy public prosecutor Raja Zaizul Faridah Raja Zaharuddin in the trial of Riduan, who is charged with raping the 12-year-old girl inside a parked car at a roadside in Inanam, Sabah about 10am on Feb 18 this year.

Earlier, Rina said traces of semen matching only the accuseds blood sample were also found on another three exhibits.

A seat cover and two handkerchiefs had only Riduan Masmuds DNA, she said while showing the items before Judge Ummu Khatom Abd Samad.

Answering another question, she said if a persons DNA was found at a location, the likelihood of the person having been there was very high.

On May 21, the court was told that Riduan had married the girl which caused an uproar from the public. He faces up to 20 years imprisonment and whipping upon conviction under Section 376 of the Penal Code.

Lawyer Loretto J.Padua represented the accused while Datuk Mariati Robert of the Sabah Law Association and Mary Florence Gomez from Voice of The Children Malaysia were present as observers.
