DNA matched in Baby Hope case
Posted: October 8, 2013 at 5:42 pm
Published: Oct. 8, 2013 at 7:50 AM
NEW YORK, Oct. 8 (UPI) -- New York police said they matched the DNA of a young girl whose remains were found in a cooler in a city park in 1991 to a person they believe is her mother.
Police reopened the case in July on the 3- to 5-year-old child who became known only as Baby Hope. Her body was buried in St. Raymond's Cemetery in the Bronx in 1993. The medical examiner's office was able to construct Baby Hope's DNA profile in 2011 but no genetic match was found in the databases of convicted felons or missing persons.
Law enforcement officials Monday were able to match her DNA after receiving a tip from a woman who said she thought she knew Baby Hope's sister, the New York Post reported.
After interviewing the possible sister, investigators narrowed down who they believed to the be the mother, whose DNA matched that of the body of the child, The New York Times reported.
The investigation is ongoing and so far no charges have been filed.

DNA leads police to suspect in woman's slaying, rape
Posted: at 7:41 am
SAN ANTONIO DNA led San Antonio police to a 21-year-old man accused in the Jan. 2012 rape and murder of a woman whose nude body was found in a West Side alley.
Daniel Reyes is being held in the Bexar County Jail on one count of capital murder in connection with the death of Elizabeth Bermea. A judge set bail at $500,000.
According to an arrest warrant affidavit, Bermea was 45 when she was attacked in the 900 block of Menchaca Street. A witness saw a man on top of a woman outside of his bathroom window and told police he heard a woman screaming.
After about 40 minutes, the witness reportedly saw the man pick up his pants, put his jacket on and kick the woman. He then dragged her across the street, according to the affidavit, but not before he stopped to sexually assault her again.
The witness told police that during the second assault, He could hear the groans from the woman even though his bathroom window was closed, the affidavit states.
DNA samples were taken from Bermea's body and entered into the Combined DNA Index System, and on Sept. 20, a match was found.
According to public records, Reyes had been arrested several times before: in September, 2012, for prostitution; in May, 2012, for assault of a family member, causing bodily injury; and in February, 2011, for making a terroristic threat to a relative. All three times, he was found guilty, given a fine and sentenced to jail.
Police on Saturday contacted Reyes at his home, in the 100 block of Jeffrey Street, about five blocks from where Bermea's body was found.
He reportedly told police he was involved in a physical confrontation with Bermea, the affidavit states, and he struck her in the face, which knocked her out. He also told police that Bermea was kicking him, so he restrained her legs and dragged her to the alley, where he engaged in sexual intercourse, the affidavit states.
Reyes told police that he hit her hard enough to knock her out so that she would not remember what had happened to her the next morning, and then walked home.

Marchex Launches Groundbreaking Call DNA and Dynamic Tracking Technologies to Transform Mobile Advertising Measurement …
Posted: at 7:41 am
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--
Marchex, Inc. (MCHX), a mobile advertising technology company, today released two new technologies, Call DNA and Dynamic Tracking, designed to significantly lower customer acquisition costs for advertisers by providing insights into which calls convert into sales. These patent-pending technologies provide a new and deeper level of customer conversion data generated by ad campaigns.
Call DNA and Dynamic Tracking also create greater consumer privacy protection and increase time efficiency for advertisers who no longer have to listen to calls to understand customer conversations.
Historically, listening to customer call recordings has been an impossible task at scale for businesses receiving huge volumes of calls, said Warren Kay, Executive in Residence at BIA Kelsey. Technology that removes this massive pain point is a big step forward for the industry because it helps businesses do what they do best serve customers.
Call DNA and Dynamic Tracking are part of the Marchex Call Analytics platform and address long-standing advertiser challenges. For years, advertisers have struggled to understand the quality of inbound phone calls coming from their digital ad campaigns. Because of rapid smartphone adoption, call volumes are increasing, which has intensified the need for a solution. In fact, Google released a study last month showing that 70% of consumers searching on mobile call businesses directly from their phones.
Now, with the launch of Call DNA and Dynamic Tracking, businesses can cost-effectively determine which keywords or impressions in these calls lead to high-quality customer conversations and sales at scale.
Call DNA provides:
Dynamic Tracking provides:
Marchexs technologies also shed new light on flawed metrics which have been traditionally used to measure customer outcomes. For instance, the length of time a customer spends on the phone with a business often has been a standard indicator of a good call. However, data from Call DNA trials reveals that callers often stay on hold for long periods of time without connecting to an agent.
These products are a significant advancement for our customers. As mobile continues to grow, marketers are increasingly unable to close the loop between which online actions drive an actual conversation and, ultimately, a sale, said Pete Christothoulou, President of Marchex. Call DNA and Dynamic Tracking provide actionable insights that can transform advertising performance. Weve seen these products improve ad performance by more than 25% and are excited to see the technologies yield leaner, more efficient advertising budgets for our customers.
