Greece mystery girl: Interpol says no DNA match in its database

Posted: October 23, 2013 at 9:44 am

STORY HIGHLIGHTS

Athens (CNN) -- The DNA of a girl authorities think may have been abducted by a Roma couple in Greece doesn't match any profile in Interpol's database, the international law enforcement agency said Tuesday.

In a case that has generated huge interest in Greece, authorities have charged the couple with abducting the child they call Maria.

Interpol said Greek authorities have asked for its help in solving Maria's identity.

"Until now, a comparison of the girl's profile against Interpol's global DNA database has not produced a match," Interpol said in a news release.

Interpol said it would make the database available to authorities in countries where someone who claims to be a possible blood relative to the child has submitted a DNA profile.

Family of missing toddler Ben Needham seek DNA tests on mystery Greek girl

Posted: October 21, 2013 at 11:45 pm

The family of a missing British toddler has called for DNA tests to be carried out on children found at Roma settlements - starting with the allegedly abducted little girl discovered earlier this week in Greece.

The sister of Ben Needham, a 21-month-old toddler who was abducted from his grandparents home on the island of Kos in 1991, said she wanted police to carry out an investigation based on her own DNA beginning at the encampment near Farsala.

The settlement is at the centre of an international appeal to find the parents of a four-year-old girl, known only as Maria, who police believe may have been abducted.

An officer looked into Marias case when he saw the blonde-haired and blue-eyed child living in squalid conditions with a Roma couple and 13 other children whom she looked nothing like.

DNA tests confirmed that she was not related to the 39-year-old man and 40-year-old woman with whom she lived, and the couple have now been arrested on abduction charges.

The case has sparked new hope for the Needhams, who say they were told at the time by police that there was no way their toddler could have been abducted by Roma groups.

Bens mother Kerry told ITV: My family and I are extremely delighted at the news that a four-year-old girl has been found in a gypsy camp in Larissa, Greece.

We have always believed that Ben's abduction was gypsy-related and have had a long ongoing inquiry in Larissa. We hope that the investigation into Ben's disappearance will now be looked at again.

Ben's sister LeighannaNeedham, who at 20 had not been born when he went missing, said the discovery of Maria in the gypsy camp was welcome news and said DNA tests could be used to find Ben or perhaps even his children.

It's given us great hope, she told Sky News yesterday.

Florida Escape Probers Testing Forgeries for DNA

Posted: at 11:45 pm

Scientists are DNA testing the forged documents that allowed two convicted murderers to escape from a Florida prison as the two recaptured men are being questioned about possible accomplices.

Laboratory scientists in Pensacola, Fla., are testing the forged documents for DNA today, using a method called Touch DNA, according to the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

Touch DNA is a method that analyzes skin cells possibly left on evidence.

FLDE Commissioner Gerald Bailey has indicated that more arrests would be made in connection with the jailbreak.

Agents are also back at Bay County Jail questioning Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker.

Jenkins and Walker were apprehended without incident at the Coconut Grove Motor Inn in Panama City Saturday evening, officials said.

Law enforcement officials believe the two men may have paid someone thousands of dollars to create the forged release paper they used to con officials.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Saturday, about 20 members of the task force surrounded the hotel and told Jenkins and Walker to come out. About a minute later, both men came out with their hands in the air and were taken into custody without incident.

When the two convicted killers emerged from room 227, where they had been holed up, they told officials "they were relieved that it was over," U.S. Marshals Service Chief Inspector Frank Chiumento said.

The two convicted murderers who used forged documents to walk out of a Florida prison are not cooperating with investigators trying to find out where they got to phony release letters, police sources said.

Agents have been questioning Joseph Jenkins and Charles Walker at Bay County Jail since they were taken back into custody on Saturday, but neither man has answered any questions about possible accomplices, police said.

FLDE Commissioner Gerald Bailey has indicated that more arrests would be made in connection with the jailbreak.

Agents have pinpointed suspects for possible arrest and are building a case against them, but do not have any arrest warrants at this time, police said this evening.

DNA ‘evidence’ for Himalayan yetis doesn’t bear scrutiny

Posted: October 20, 2013 at 5:44 pm

Enough evidence?

The recent DNA testing of two hairs, purportedly from yeti, has attracted a lot of public interest. Does the evidence show that yetis exist?Well, not just yet. The test looked at mitochondrial DNA sequences, which looks at genetic material that is only inherited from the mother. This is a relatively easy test, because mitochondrial DNA is present in many copies in every cell, so there is more to work with in small or degraded samples.

Critically, the testing was conducted in a lab that works primarily on humans, and it produced sequences that turned out to be bear-likespecifically polar bear-like. We havent seen the data, but we would find this result convincing. If Bryan Sykes, professor of human genetics at Oxford University, had found the DNA to be human, there would be questions about possible contamination, because a tiny fleck of skin can easily contribute spurious DNA.

Assuming that the hair samples came from polar bears, the next question is how they came to be in the Himalayas. Many alternative explanations need to be eliminated before we can take this potential discovery, and its relationship to the yeti legends, seriously.

It is possible, for instance, that the hairs got to the Himalayas by accident.Journalists, explorers and scientists interested in the worlds colder regions may well visit both the Arctic, where polar bears live, and the Himalayas. Could hairs travel between these places either on or even as part of clothing or mementos? Possibly. If someone found a putative yeti footprint and, when crouching over it, a polar bear hair fell onto the snow, we can imagine that the person would forget what they are wearing in the excitement.

If the hairs did not get to the Himalayas by accident, then we must consider the possibility that they were placed there deliberately. History is littered with hoaxes, from Piltdown man to the famous photos of the Loch Ness monster. Writers might be motivated to produce a good story. Locals might like to increase tourism. Rogue scientists might want to take credit for solving a riddle or perhaps even play a joke on colleagues. For a scientific prankster, what better artifact to place in the middle of Asia than polar bear hair?

We know nothing about the circumstances in which these hairs were collected, but to take the bear story at face value, we would need to see a lot of solid evidence that a spoof was out of the question. Such evidence is not easy to come by.

What if the hairs were not placed there deliberately? Then the story gets more interesting, though it would still be somewhat difficult to swallow. A polar bear could do a good imitation of the storybook yeti. Rearing onto its hind legs it would appear huge and frightening. And bears living in perennially snowy conditions, like most other species, would tend to evolve white fur: prey species dont want to be discovered while predators need to be able to sneak up on their prey unseen. However, bears are large, warm-blooded species that need a lot of food.

Polar bears survive by eating seals, which are seasonally abundant and provide large chunks of high-calorie blubber. A similar species of bear living in the Himalayas would probably find life more difficult. These regions are not bursting with energy-rich fruits and berries or mammals to feed on. We struggle to see how a large species like a polar bear could obtain sufficient nutrition. This is even more of a problem if we are to believe there is a viable population numbering at least in the tens, and probably a in the low hundreds. Why are there not more sightings?

To dismiss all stories of this sort would be wrong. New species of mammal are occasionally discovered, even now, and there is the famous case of Homo floriensis, the so-called hobbit, a recently extinct form of human found in Indonesia. However, even these discoveries are open to revision. New research has questioned whether Homo floriensis could be considered different from Homo sapiens.
