NorCal Lab Analyzing Animal DNA In Murder Investigations

DAVIS (KPIX 5) A Northern California laboratory is providing crucial evidence in murder investigations using DNA extracted from the pets of crime victims.

The Forensics Unit of the Veterinary Genetics lab at the University of California, Davis is the go-to lab for getting results that qualify for convictions in court.

We are the only accredited laboratory in the world doing this type of work, said Beth Davis, a scientist with the UC Davis lab.

The scientists here isolate animal DNA for use in cases ranging from abuse to horse-breeding to cold-blooded killings.

If you own a dog or a cat, you know, youve got fur on your pants. You go to your car, it gets in your car and youre carrying their DNA, their signature with you everywhere you go, said Davis.

In 2008, Steven and Linda Riley were stabbed to death in their home in Sacramento County, their bodies discovered after they failed to show up to their jobs.

The bloody crime scene did not have any blood from any suspect, and the couples family had no idea who could have done it.

Eventually, the suspicion centered on the couples son, Matthew, even though there was no physical evidence pointing to his involvement until prosecutors took a close look at a pair of boots found on the roof of his former apartment building two years after the murders.

The idea was that he most likely killed in his socked feet and put his socked feet back into those boots and drove home, said Sacramento County Deputy District Attorney Chris Ore.

DNA experts testify as Dennis Dechaine seeks new murder trial

Posted: at 4:42 am

Posted: November 8 Updated: Today at 12:09 AM A judge must decide if the Maine man convicted of murdering 12-year-old Sarah Cherry in 1988 gets a new trial.

By Eric Russell erussell@pressherald.com Staff Writer

The legal fate of Dennis Dechaine now rests, as it has for 25 years, in the hands of Superior Court Justice Carl Bradford.

Bradford, 80, retired in 1998 but is still an active judge and is called upon to preside over certain cases, including that of Dechaine, whom Bradford sent to prison for life in 1989.

On Thursday and Friday in a Portland courtroom, Bradford listened to testimony from DNA experts. He now awaits written arguments from the defense and prosecution before he determines whether Dechaine is granted a new trial.

Deputy Attorney General William Stokes will argue that Dechaine does not deserve a new trial. The state believes that he alone is responsible for the 1988 killing of 12-year-old Sarah Cherry and no amount of DNA analysis is going to change that.

Defense attorney Steven Peterson, who has handled Dechaines appeal since 2004, is hoping that the new DNA analysis presented over the last two years, including more this week, is enough to establish the smallest amount of doubt.

DNA casts doubt on knife in Knox case

Posted: at 9:42 pm

AP Expert testimony has again cast doubt on whether a knife was the murder weapon used by Amanda Knox.

A new DNA test on a kitchen knife failed to conclusively prove that it was the murder weapon used by US student Amanda Knox and her boyfriend to kill her British roommate.

An expert witness testified on Wednesday that the minuscule DNA trace on the knife handle near the blade showed "considerable affinity" with Knox's own DNA.

That confirmed what was already known from two previous trials: that Knox's DNA was on the knife handle, identified through another trace.

No DNA belonging to the slain British student, Meredith Kercher, or Knox's boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito was identified. Previous genetic evidence on the blade linked to Kercher had been contested at earlier stages.

Outside the court, Knox defence lawyer Carlo Dalla Vedova said the testimony confirms his contention that the knife was used by Knox solely for preparing food.

"The report confirms that this is a kitchen knife. It is not a murder weapon," Dalla Vedova said.

Luca Maori, a defence lawyer for Sollecito, said the trace's very existence also indicated the knife had not been washed.

"It is something very important," he said. "It is absurd to use it for a murder and put it back in the drawer."

Prosecutors deferred comment for their summations, which are due later this month.

Research and Markets: Global DNA Sequencing Equipment and Services Market to 2016: Roche, Agilent Tech & Illumina …

Posted: at 9:42 pm

DUBLIN--(BUSINESS WIRE)--

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/mcrxcw/global_dna) has announced the addition of the "Global DNA Sequencing Equipment and Services Market to 2016" report to their offering.

The Global DNA Sequencing Equipment and Services market to grow at a CAGR of 20.86 percent over the period 2012-2016.

One of the main factors driving the market is success of HGP. The HGP is an international scientific research project to regulate DNA sequences of the human body and to map the genes. The success of the HGP has led to a better understanding of human evolution. The effect of the HGP can help in the genotyping of specific viruses to direct suitable cure, identification of oncogenes and mutations in cancer, development of forensic applied sciences, and risk valuation.

One of the main trends witnessed in the Global DNA Sequencing Equipment and Services market is increase in number of DNA sequencing projects. The Global DNA Sequencing Equipment and Services market has recently witnessed a significant increase in the number of projects funded by the leading vendors. For instance, Illumina and Partners HealthCare System Inc. announced a strategic alliance in September 2012, in order to offer infrastructure and networking tools for the interpretation and reporting process on genetic sequencing data. Moreover, Hoffmann-La Roche Ltd. and SoftGenetics LLC signed a co-promotion agreement in May 2012 for a new sequencing software tool. Roche and PerkinElmer Inc. announced a new supply agreement in May 2011 for the distribution of the NimbleGen CGX microarray workflow. In addition, Pacific Biosciences announced collaboration in July 2012, with Imec, a Belgium-based nanoelectronics research center focusing on the improvement of innovative microchips for multiplexed single-molecule genetic analysis.

Further, the report states that one of the main challenges is low adoption of genomic technology. Adoption of genomic technology remains low compared to other sequence analysis technologies, especially among large biotechnology companies. Researchers still have doubts over the advantages of genomic technology, mainly because of a few instances of failure during genomic research programs.

The key vendors dominating this space include:
