(CNN) We leave our DNA everywhere on the side of a wine glass or on a strand of hair left in a public restroom. An artist is proving that what you leave behind could be a lot more than you think.

You may want to think twice before you spit out your gum or drop a cigarette butt in public. New York Artist Healther Dewey-Hagborg might pick it up extract the DNA and turn it into a 3D face that could look like you!

A lot of my work begins with a question. In this particular place the question was what can I learn about someone from a single hair? Dewey-Hagborg said.

Once she finds a sample, she takes it to the lab to mine it for DNA, and then analyzes the results.

From a cigarette butt where someones ancestors likely came from, their gender, eye color, hair color, complexion, Dewey-Hagborg said.

That information is then fed into a computer program that generates a 3D model of a face.

The way that Im using code here is a lot like how a sketch artist would use a pencil, Dewey-Hagborg said.

It takes about eight hours to print in 3D at NYUs Advanced Media Studio.

Then, the excess powder is removed to reveal the disembodied face from a strangers DNA but there are limitations the length of a persons nose or the shape of his or her face cannot be determined.

ST. LOUIS A single hair on a blanket helped convict Rodney Lincoln of a 1983 slaying that left two young girls motherless and with lifelong wounds.

While DNA testing now shows the hair was not his, it is not enough to exonerate him, a St. Louis judge has ruled.

Prosecutors have pointed out the hair could have been left by anyone, not necessarily the perpetrator, and Circuit Judge Robin Vannoy agreed.

With no knowledge of where the blanket came from, how long it had been in the residence, who had contact with the blanket outside of the date of the offense, there is no way to argue that the lack of a DNA match exonerates (Lincoln), Vannoy noted in her ruling, which was issued Tuesday and became available in full Thursday.

The judge also disputed that the hair described at trial as a match to Lincoln was the linchpin to his conviction, as attorneys fighting for his freedom argued.

Vannoy said she believed it was the testimony of one of the daughters, who had first identified Lincoln as the perpetrator from a photo array that compared his mugshot to a picture of a cousin.

While the photo spread may have been improper and suggestive, (the victim) had other occasions in which she identified (Lincoln) as the attacker, Vannoy wrote, mentioning a police lineup and courtroom identification.

The childs testimony never wavered and determining what was or was not the linchpin would require the court to read the minds of the jurors, and it cannot be decided after a review of the transcript 30 years later.

Lincoln has spent 30 years in prison for the gruesome slaying on April 27, 1982, of JoAnn Tate, 35, and the sexual assaults of her daughters, Melissa, 7, and Renee, 4. After one jury hung in 1983, another deliberated 11 hours before finding Lincoln guilty of manslaughter and assault the following year. The hair testimony was part of the second trial but not the first.

The Midwest Innocence Project took up Lincolns case in 2005, arguing for his release under a state law that allows for post-conviction DNA testing in certain instances. Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyces office opposed it.

ST. LOUIS New DNA tests don't prove that a St. Louis man is innocent of the 1982 murder of a woman and the sexual assault of her young daughters, a judge has ruled.

Rodney Lincoln, 69, had sought to have his double life sentence overturned based on DNA testing that he claimed shows he did not murderJoAnn Tate, 35, nor assault her daughters, Melissa, 7, and Renee, 4.

St. Louis Circuit Court Judge Robin Vannoy rejected his motion on Tuesday after hearing the case argued in September.

The Midwest Innocence Project, which took up Lincoln's case in 2005, hoped to get him released under a state law that allows for post-conviction DNA testing in certain instances. Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyces officeagreed to new testing after misplaced evidence was found. But prosecutorsopposed his release, saying this is not a case where DNA provides the final word.

The results showed no male DNA on several bloody items from the apartment just that of the victims. Previous testing also showed Lincoln was not the source of hair found on a blanket on one girls bed and from one girls rape kit. The hairs don't match any of the victims, either.

Laura OSullivan, legal director for the Midwest Innocence Project, argued one of the hairs had been the linchpin to Lincolns conviction.

A St. Louis police crime lab technician had described it as a match to Lincoln, using a hair comparison method that has since been debunked. The hair testimony was not introduced in Lincoln's original case, which ended in mistrial, but was presented to the jury in a second trial, which ended in conviction.

But prosecutors said while the hairs don't match Lincoln, they don't prove he's innocent.

Life is not whats on CSI, Assistant Circuit Attorney Ed Postawko said in September. Nothing about this demonstrates Rodney Lincolns innocence. It just shows they werent able to get the perpetrators DNA.

He pointed out one hair from the crime scene was found to belong to an animal, showing that the two hairs in question could have been left by someone other than the attacker.
